I sent an email May 28 then again June 11 then again June 28th and never got a single response. Not a "sorry unfortunately deposit is final" or we will review and get back to you. We did a tour and liked a school,and we were pretty satisfied with a year our two year old completed here. We decided to continue,but this year is a different story. Actually a friend of mine whose kid was in different class,pulled her kid before this school year,pointing out that school has some issues. I don't know if that's because the director changed or the school run out of money,but activities became so limited.Most of the days kids just doing coloring and painting,not much of diverse materials are used even though you pay for it.Last year was much better regarding this.Curriculum missing some creativity. This year there have been zero field trips even though they were promised. Instead of taking kids to a museum tour as a field trip,they invite you(it's optional activity)to bring your kids on the weekend for a museum tour and charge you like 60$ per ticket.Ridiculous. Christmas party that was planned for a while was basically a bounce house. Other important thing,they are short on staff. The pictures of daily kids activities are posted on the app not very often.For that I don't blame the teacher(my kid teacher is great by the way,knowledgeable,passionate and caring and we really like her),but she is by herself most of the times so obviously can't do everything. On the good note,the school is very clean,super safe,everyone is friendly,the atmosphere is great,front desk ladies are amazing,very communicative and always there for any questions,ready to help you out with a smile. My kid's teacher is amazing as well,she pours all of her heart in care for the children. He made great friends and in a short period of time (5 months) he's learned so much, it's unbelievable to me! Unfortunately we are moving to another city and honestly, the saddest part for me has been withdrawing my son from BIA. I love how involved parents can be (I sure was!) and the learning environment is fantastic. My son and I have nothing but great memories to take with us from BIA and can only hope that his next preschool is remotely close to how awesome BIA is. As a fan of history and 1920's architecture I had to stop when I saw this historical marker on the…read morecorner in front of the The Cushman School located in the historic MIMO Miami district on Biscayne Blvd. It is the oldest, continuously-operating, co-ed pre-kindergarten through grade 12, college preparatory, private school in Miami. The historic marker was erected by the Class of 1964 in cooperation with the Historical Association of Southern Florida. Dr. Laura Cushman moved from Iowa to Miami in the early 1900s. After becoming an accomplished teacher in the county school system, she decided to open The Cushman School on the front porch of her home in 1924 with just 12 students. In 1926 the school moved into the Mediterranean Revival building designed by Russell Skipton that is still used today. The classrooms were arranged to ger the breeze from Biscayne Bay. Windows were added to the school that came from the Royal Palm Hotel in downtown Miami. The school bell on the roof of the main building is the same plantation bell that was used to call the construction workers to Villa Vizcaya. Today the campus is a mixture of the historic buildings and new ones and the high school building is a few blocks south on Biscayne Boulevard. Dr. Cushman served as principal of the school for 52 years. She wanted the children who attended the school to not only be good scholars but also good citizens with the character traits of industry, responsibility, reliability, courtesy, honesty and integrity. In 1992 the United States Department of Education named The Cushman School as a National School of Excellence. Today, the school consists of a mix of historic and new buildings spread across a beautifully landscaped campus in a historic pocket of Miami. The high school building is a few blocks south on Biscayne Boulevard. As a fellow educator I loved learning about Dr. Cushman's educational philosophy which positively influences the development of the child but with all of the data input and test taking that goes on in schools today, is not emphasized enough in the public school system. How refreshing to see that there is a school developing tools and educational programs that help children reach their highest potential while still promoting social responsibility. All of that comes at a steep price however as tuition ranges from $33,000 to $43,000 a year at The Cushman School.

Another review had it spot on when it said it is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I hope other parents take heed of the warnings and the parents that do take their children there currently dig for more information. Never is secrecy and lack of information a good thing especially when it comes to children. And as previously stated, this is an insidious institution. Please please please do not take your children to this place. No child deserves to be harmed emotionally and physically.

There are several other reputable schools in the area that are healthier, happier, and offer a much better education than this one. Looks ARE deceiving here. Papillon is gorgeous. It's the main selling point of the school. Sadly, it's all smoke and mirrors and the pretty exterior masks a VERY ugly interior world for kids, teachers and parents alike. Yelling/Aggressive/Hostile Environment. This is one of the biggest problems at Papillon. Ms. Damarys will YELL at a young child, bring them to tears, and then yell at them again to 'STOP CRYING!'. She bullies students, and also regularly bullies her staff. Ms. Damarys has been known to be aggressive and hostile towards teachers and parents, but this behavior is even extending to the kids. And the environment is very secretive/controlling. There is no access for parents to see what's really happening inside the school, or even communicate with the child's teacher: every call, message, reminder, concern must go through her. Dangerously Understaffed (and extremely high turnover). If you like your child's teacher, don't get too attached because they probably won't last the year, and they will spend the year with a receptionist (or similar) as their 'teacher'. Because Ms. Damarys treats her staff (and people in general) so badly, they leave.. as they should, because no one should be subjected to her regular aggression and shaming. The children are often times left without a teacher, and new 'teachers' with ZERO credentials are used to fill those spaces. NONE of the 'teachers' there are certified for montessori (the shelves are covered in montessori lessons and tools, but they are not being taught at all!) and I doubt many of them have teaching licenses of any kind. Kids in grades 3 or 4+ don't have a teacher at all, and work independently from workbooks all day. Inconsistent. Because there are no checks and balances, no administration, no systems and no consistent rules, whatever rules Ms. Damarys creates today can become invalid the next day, and there is no warning or reasoning. This creates an unstable, anxious environment. The inconsistency of the school matches exactly the inconsistency of Ms. Damarys's own personality and moods. The environment is unstable because the person running it is unstable. The kids are the ones that suffer. Disappointing. There is always a lot of overpromising and under-delivering at Papillon. Everything seems wonderful at first, and there are many promises of what's to come. You come in filled with hope. But for sure, a small percentage of the promises will ever happen. For sure, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. It's not if?, it's when? Strong education. Apparently it was, years ago. But parents agree that even that has been on a sharp and steady decline. Math and reading are the only subjects being taught, and even then, kids are taught to regurgitate an answer onto a worksheet, not truly understand or discuss the concepts (you could probably do this at home for free.) Papillion is in serious decline, and there are other schools cropping up that offer a much better education, without all the stress and fear. Fear. The main sense among the students is fear, the opposite of what school should feel like. Deceptive. Ms. Damarys is a master of deception or duplicity. You'll come to tour the school and meet someone and something amazing.. smart, creative, visionary, competent, caring (maybe even a temporary 'staff') but be warned that there is an extreme other side and you will for sure experience it sooner than later... but only AFTER you've already paid the non-refundable tuition for the following year!!
