I spent time in the former Soviet Union and while there could speak Russian and read Cyrillic. Besides being a boy genius, languages came easily to me and I spoke them with glee. Then I got older and my head no longer had room for all the things I learned, so some things had to be kicked to the side. My aptitude for language was one of those things. This was a problem as I wanted to travel to the Caribbean and South America, enjoyed eating latin food and had a metric ton of Latino friends who were pretty tired of translating for me when we went out to clubs, etc. Plus, it's always good to know when someone is talking isht about you. The time had come: I was moving to Miami and I was going to learn Spanish. As with most (all) things, I turned to Yelp to find out where to go. Not finding a bunch of information, I made a short list and reached out to the various schools. Most never bothered to reply to me. One did but was fairly condescending (not a good look for a school/teacher). Then Peggy C reached out to me. Peggy is the founder and head instructor at Mind Fuel. She reached out by email and encouraged me to call her. Not only was she engaging and friendly over the phone, she seemed to have a genuine interest in why I wanted to learn Spanish and a determination in helping me to get there. I decided to come to the school and see what was up. When I arrived to the City Center building, I was impressed to find several small classrooms and many students speaking French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Italian, and other languages. With as many nationalities that make up Miami, it makes sense that a language school should be a modern-day Tower of Babel. I signed up for my intro course and Peggy was my teacher. She led me through basic vocab, verbs, sentences, writing exercises, speaking drills, and other means by which to instruct me. Despite my lack of any Spanish ability, I began to pick up on things and before too long, I was having conversations, (slowly) understanding conversations and reading and writing in this new tongue. Like most skills, learning a new language is only going to be as helpful as the time one puts in to it. At the beginning, I relished my new school and studied as though I wanted extra credit. Things came quickly and easily. As class has progressed and the subject has become more arduous (how many iterations of last tense does one language REALLY need), so too have the requirements on my time. The breakthroughs aren't coming as quickly or easily right now but I take full responsibility for this. Peggy's instruction remains as clear and dedicated as it was on Day 1. I need to put the time in to make sure her instruction does not go in vain. My greatest compliment to Peggy (and the school) is that she's never once made me to feel stupid. It's quite a vulnerable thing to put yourself out there to learn a new language. You're going to make mistakes. You're going to mispronounce things. You're going to be completely dumbfounded as to how to say things. You're going to be all these things. But learning how to overcome these challenges in a safe and nurturing environment is the difference between continued success and a past hobby. Thanks to Peggy and Mind Fuel, I plan on being a continued success story.

The appearance of the fence shifts based on point of view--up close, the fence allows a full view into and out from the DASH courtyard. The Design & Architecture Senior High, or DASH as its commonly known, not to be confused with the store on the beach is a Magnet school for Industrial, Fashion and Graphic Design, Filmaking and of course, Architecture. Located in Miami's Design District, it is for those kids who are creative and free thinkers. If I could give this school ten stars it would deserve every one, but I am limited to five. DASH creates an environment where young minds are not only encouraged but expected to grow, think and create. Art and design surround you every step you take throughout the school, even in the languages and science classrooms, each and every one of these educators understand the importance of developing the mind through creativity. To encourage problem solving, freethinking and art through uncommon ways. The question posed to these kids commonly is "why?" They must think and are encouraged to find the reasoning behind things instead of it getting spoon fed to them. Most of these children not only are artistic in a visual way but their creative side will expand to music as well, its an everyday event to hear music during breaks throughout the school as they play the piano in the cafeteria or bring their guitars. It is a school full of educators that understand the importance of individuality and expression, and they have the freedom to use instead of being boxed into one type of educational zombie march. I mean, where else during a fire alarm testing as the irritating flashing light interferes with the class (knowing its NOT a real alarm of course) would a teacher turn the lights off and put on disco music and lets the kids enjoy those 5 minutes? Before anyone goes thinking this school is all about having fun and games, know this: Dash is ranked by US News & World Report as the #15 school in the nation. As a Magnet it is number TWO in the country, it is the number one Magnet school in Florida. Over all other Magnet Schools in the city. So think about that for a second. This is based on academics, so know that the education couldn't be better. What DASH understands which the educational system in Florida and the USA is sadly missing the point on is that creativity does help critical thinking, art does help children learn by forcing their minds to expand and therefore see problems differently and teaches them to think for themselves. The historic marker was erected by the Class of 1964 in cooperation with the Historical Association of Southern Florida. Dr. Laura Cushman moved from Iowa to Miami in the early 1900s. After becoming an accomplished teacher in the county school system, she decided to open The Cushman School on the front porch of her home in 1924 with just 12 students. In 1926 the school moved into the Mediterranean Revival building designed by Russell Skipton that is still used today. The classrooms were arranged to ger the breeze from Biscayne Bay. Windows were added to the school that came from the Royal Palm Hotel in downtown Miami. The school bell on the roof of the main building is the same plantation bell that was used to call the construction workers to Villa Vizcaya. Today the campus is a mixture of the historic buildings and new ones and the high school building is a few blocks south on Biscayne Boulevard. Dr. Cushman served as principal of the school for 52 years. She wanted the children who attended the school to not only be good scholars but also good citizens with the character traits of industry, responsibility, reliability, courtesy, honesty and integrity. In 1992 the United States Department of Education named The Cushman School as a National School of Excellence. Today, the school consists of a mix of historic and new buildings spread across a beautifully landscaped campus in a historic pocket of Miami. The high school building is a few blocks south on Biscayne Boulevard. As a fellow educator I loved learning about Dr. Cushman's educational philosophy which positively influences the development of the child but with all of the data input and test taking that goes on in schools today, is not emphasized enough in the public school system. How refreshing to see that there is a school developing tools and educational programs that help children reach their highest potential while still promoting social responsibility. All of that comes at a steep price however as tuition ranges from $33,000 to $43,000 a year at The Cushman School.

My daughter was in gifted classes and excelled tremondously. The classes were small and the teachers were very attentive and we're eager to teach. Now 2015, I enrolled my son here since I didn't want him going to Allapattah Middle (even though, I went there in the early 90's.) My son loves his school , very strict uniform policy which I like. New principal, some old and new teachers. They offer free transportation from certain stop areas, if not you gave the option of paying $40 a month for door to door pick-up and drop off which extremely reasonable. My son decided to join the after school program which only cost was $40 registration fee for the whole year. The after school program offers homework assistance, free tutoring and their options of a favorite sport or other activities. Aspira also changed their name to Aspira DE/CO. The school is also moving across the street in a couple of months to a new building can't wait for the grand opening. I do not have any complaints as of yet neither does my son. Happy camper.
