TL;DR: Predatory pricing + double penalty policy. Avoid…read more I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was bad enough that others should know before spending money here. This studio runs on a subscription model: you pay monthly and receive 4 class tokens (valued at $50 each). You must use a token (or pay $50) to book a class--and once you book, that money is gone whether you attend or not, unless you cancel within their 12-hr cancel policy. If you don't use all 4 of your token within the month, you also lose them. However, they will charge an $25 "no-show" fee on top of the lost $50, if you miss the cancel window, and life happens, and you can't attend. That's $75 for a class you didn't attend. The owner justifies this by saying it ensures spots are available for other students. That argument doesn't hold up: 1. The class I attended were never full, in the 2 month i had this membership, at max, there's 3 people in my class, so demand isn't the issue for the classes/time-slots I go to. 2. If demand were high, a booking system already solves that--people who want spots book ahead. 3. If the goal is accessibility, the solution is to add more classes, not punish customers. When there's a no-show because life happens, the customer lose the token. The studio already gets paid for doing nothing. Charging extra on top of that isn't about fairness--it's about squeezing more money out of customers. When I questioned this, instead of acknowledging how excessive this is, the owner tried to justify it as "fair," which honestly felt like gaslighting. It got worse when I tried to cancel my membership. Despite having all 4 unused tokens for the month, I was only offered a partial refund. At this point, this business disgust me. I have all good will to support small local businesses, but not for a business model that penalizes customers twice and then deflects responsibility. I won't support a business that operates like this, and I strongly recommend others think twice before signing up.

Pretty much meathead on benches with talkative attitude and leans Guys/gals on squat for 30mins. I'm glad there are no deadlift or maybe I haven't seen one doing it. Seriously 250lbs dude bench 275lbs are not impressive or guys took 5mins on rest and bench some 245lbs with arch back bench press for 1-2reps was a joke. Or 140lbs dude bench 135lbs & took 5mins each rest. This was all happened at same time maybe faith bought them together. Skip this gym for your own gain. I gave two stars because of the easy sign up trial I'm glad it didn't cost me anything but make me missed out to bench with my friend for my 275lbs bench.

Back then, they stupidly had a huge men's locker room on one floor, and a similarly huge boys' locker room on another floor---and I'm assuming, ditto for a women's and a girls' LR. In other words, huge waste of space, since all the actual workout space was crammed into a claustrophobic cellar space with low 8ft ceilings, and the equipment was pretty old and fairly rickety. NOW, however, they've combined the locker rooms and have a palatial high ceilinged 2nd floor workout space with excellent and all new equipment including something I had never seen in a Y before: Concept ski ergs! (Google it if you have no idea what I'm talking about.) Said equipment is not all that intelligently laid out, though---but compared to how it used to be, no complaints here! Locker room looks pretty much the same but the showers and restroom are nicely redone. Not so crazy about their cardio equipment, though. All their stationary bikes are the geriatric recumbent ones, with only one ancient Keiser on the floor. They have Precor treadmills and ellipticals that have nice big screens with the wonderful "interactive terrains" similar to Life Fitness's current models found at other Ys---but unlike the LF machines, these Precor machines' video screens are buggy as hell, constantly freezing up and having to be reset within 15 minutes of starting your workout! Also, the one and only (coed) sauna they have, while being brand new and beautiful, sitting right next to the pool, BUT---is uselessly weak. Even on the highest settings, it feels like it only gets to maybe 160F tops. Nothing like the Cambridge Y's sauna which is around a divine 200F, or the Malden Y and Waltham Y's saunas which are closer to a still-passable 180F. I suppose it's meant more for people who just want to dry out after swimming, not for anyone who wants to really SWEAT, which is the whole purpose of a sauna. A good thing about this Y is that it's one of the all too few that stays open until 9pm on Fridays. Sadly, on Saturdays and Sundays they close at a lousy 4pm, just like the Cambridge Y.

I can't imagine Melrose without the Melrose YMCA! As an aside to other yelp reviewers of this YMCA, I would encourage you to voice any misgivings you might have directly to the personnel. My experience at this YMCA is that the staff are receptive to any concerns and will work with their members to find an amicable solution.
