By then, I had spent enough time in training spaces to recognize the difference between a stylish room and a genuinely well-run gym. The Great Jones Street location was exceptional, the space was immaculate, and the soundtrack was always on point. Its equipment was thoughtfully chosen, providing serious trainers with everything they needed in a compact, highly functional room. Clive was the main reason the gym became so meaningful to me. He was my personal trainer, one of my closest friends, and someone who could make a demanding session feel like the best part of the day. Rob and Steve (the owners of GJF) brought the same depth of experience, along with the authority that comes from decades spent shaping the neighborhood's fitness culture. The 3 of them were downtown fitness royalty in the most credible sense: deeply knowledgeable, widely respected, and still completely cool and approachable. Looking back, I feel as though we carried that chapter of New York life almost to its final moment before COVID changed the city. Great Jones Fitness holds memories of hard training, close friendship, and a version of downtown life that now feels especially vivid. I can still picture the music playing, Clive putting me through a workout, and Lafayette St post-workout, on our way to get a smoothie at Juice Generation. This private training studio in the East Village (Owners Rob Morea and Steve Lischin don't believe…read morein "NoHo") is a top-notch and well-planned place with amazingly personal attention. Both Rob and Steve know their stuff - they aren't "failed" athletes who thought it would be cool to be lifelong gym rats; these are people who are committed to being on top of what's happening in the fitness world, and sharing that with you. I've just started seeing Steve (he and Rob train here primarily, with occasional visiting trainers), and find the sessions to be great challenges, incredibly motivating, and kicking my sorry ass. Whether its TRX, kettlebells, biking, cross-fit craziness, or a million other techniques, Rob and Steve are going to work with you to learn about what you want to achieve, and then set out to help you achieve it. And gleefully help you suffer along the way. In other words, be prepared to work - and work hard. Sessions run more than what you pay with a training program at NYSC or other larger-scale membership gyms, but they're worth every penny, in my opinion, and my body seems to think so, too.

I've worked out with most of them and while they have different styles, they all have great, positive attitudes and work you very hard. All the instructors check in at the beginning of the session to make sure your body is feeling ok, and are always willing to let you pick a few exercises you really want to do. They continuously change up the workouts so you don't get bored or feel like you aren't being challenged. I never fail to learn something new at each session. Michele is selective about her clientele which is important when working out in such a small space. You never get stuck working out with anyone who is whiny or negative, and most of the clients I've met have been working with her for years.The studio is always spotless and while small, has a good selection of equipment.

I keep returning here for the great workouts and warm community feel. Rather than some gyms that can feel competitive or obsessed with the aesthetics, BSF is a gym where everyone is welcome. I'm someone who goes to the gym regularly with a coach who programs my workouts 4-5 times a week. Occasionally, I love to take classes like these to challenge my conditioning and endurance since cardio is something all of us strive to do more (as someone who primarily lifts). It's not only challenging but fun to see myself progress through the sweat each class I consistently go to. I recommend checking out their various classes and programs as it's friendly to all levels while also being a short walk away from all major train stations. Took the Monday 730pm legs and butt LTHYPE with Milan and it kicked my butt. You used 15-50lb…read moreweights, resistance bands and straps on a mat and on bench. You can adjust your weight and do it without weights. Lots of repetition and adjustment depending on your level. Great weight and resistance class, only negative is there's just lockers, spray deodorant, tissues, earplugs and bathrooms. There's not much of an entrance waiting area and the amenities are not really there. Took this class with class pass credits.
