Professor/Instructor Andrew talked with me on the phone, and I tried out for Filipino Martial Arts and Savate / Jeet Kune Do / Muay Thai. Though I was not attracted to Filipino Martial Arts, I wanted to know more about Savate as I could not recall this form of martial arts. Professor / Instructor Andrew is not only an indescribable instructor / educator / teacher / professor, but his historical background on Savate is so profound. Even after training he ceases to not amaze me with his arsenal of knowledge of how Savate originated from as I had no clue, but only knowing about Jeet Kune Do & Muay Thai from training in the military. I have now been training with him about to go on 2 years as my love for the martial arts known as Savate has grown tremendously. I do recommend anyone to train here as well as knowing he also has his older brother, Mr. Jason training students as well. Most gyms that have overly spaced out equipment are places like "curves" etc. Once they fill the gym in more and put more equipment in such a large space this will be the best gym around bar none. The teachers are kind, truly gentle people who guide your practice with encouragement to push to your edge or take a nap in the room - whatever your body asks of you! There are no judgements. You'll find all ages and sizes in the classes. Everyone is in a different season or walk in life. Again, listening to your body is key! One of my favorite quotes you'll often hear in class is "There is no better teacher than your body" and "No one is doing this practice as perfect as you because it is YOUR practice". Basically, eff what your neighbor is doing! You are excelling at what your body is asking of you in your practice! LOVE THIS. Such great encouragement for someone (like me) who is always wondering if I should be as strong/flexible/still (follow me here: am I doing enough?) as my neighbor. If you're scared about hot yoga: Just do it! I'm a Florida girl who moved to Northern Virginia to get away from the heat. I thought hot yoga would be hell but my body CRAVES a hot yoga practice now. I don't feel like I accomplished anything anymore unless I leave the studio soaked. You'll become addicted! Invest in a yoga mat towel, a hand towel, and a yeti/swell water bottle.
