I've gotten to know some of his students over the years as some hang out after class is over. The martial arts and fitness center is a great size and has 2 different rooms. Staff has always been very hospitable. The center is very clean and well lit. It is located next to a pet store, chinese restaurant and movie theater which are great to go to afterwards. Ryan also hosts birthday events and other special events to help out his clients such as having big group all day/night events so parents can enjoy Valentines Day or go Christmas shopping and similar events. (I am writing this as an adult who wants to learn martial arts...) I wanted to take some…read moreself-defense class, and left messages with several places. This is the only place that called me back immediately, which was a good sign. I said I never did martial arts before and would like to learn with other adults. They asked me to come in for a trial class. When I got there, there were 3 teenagers and 2 other adults, 1 man and 1 woman. The woman only just started, so I thought this was a good start. The opening exercises were good, 100 jumping jacks and some very tough moves, but since I work out frequently, I actually liked the intensity. We then learned some defense moves that I liked also. But then we had to practice these moves with each other. When it was I against the woman, it was fine b/c we both were learning. Then it was the man sparring with the other woman, and it seemed like he's been there for a while, so he did it slowly and showed her the moves. I was thinking, this wasn't too bad. Then it was my turn to spar with him, and I was shocked when he went into attack mode! I kid you not. He pulled and twisted my wrists and pretended to hit me. Unfortunately, we had to do this a dozen times. My wrists and arms started to hurt because he was pulling so hard. Then we were told to add a move where we pretended to push the other person away, and he really pushed me to the point that I had to take several steps back to avoid falling. I had previously boxed before, but that was years ago, and usually against boxing bags or sparring with instructors with pads. So the next time we sparred, I came close to giving him full-blown upper cuts but stopped short, and decided to just block him instead. (I was taught to respect my elderlies, and he was probably 15 years older.) He said with a smirk, "Oh, are you afraid of me?" I said, "No, but I didn't expect to have to fight someone for real in my first class." (In my mind, I was like bring it on, a55h01e!) I may have gotten injured if I was a true beginner. Needless to say, I am never going back. I think they really should separate the beginners from overzealous and overeager showoffs.

Master Zohar has created an amazing program. He life lessons along with the Tae Kwon Do trainings into each class not to mention a lot of fun and humor. We have noticed a drastic difference in his confidence since he has started the Master Zohar. He has used the lesson on dealing with bullies at school to easily defuse situations. In this period of home quarantine Master Zohar created Classes for the students to do through video conference so everyone could train at home. He could have just closed up shop but he wanted to make sure everyone kept up with their training. Master Zohar really seems to care about each and every student and gives them what they need when they need it. Not to mention that he knows every students name with out even thinking. I would suggest Personal Power to anyone who was interested in Tae Kwon Do training. We look forward to hopefully seeing our son receive a black belt from Master Zohar some day.

I spoke with Kyle the day before we arrived and we arranged for my 12 yr old to drop in tonight. He had a lot of fun and it was great for him to experience a different environment. The atmosphere was great- welcoming. We enjoyed watching a bit of the warm up games and sparring that went on. Adequate gear available in multiple sizes (unlike our experience at home). Coach and students were very friendly. If we lived in this area we would definitely go back. Highly recommended!

Marshal Davis and the other coaches have managed to create the kind of club where you can quickly feel you are part of a community of truly diverse ages and experience levels, from kids to adults, and Marshal's (successful but friendly) students from Swarthmore College will sometimes come by too. If I were looking for a place to start to learn fencing, this is where I would go--the folks at Liberty train their fencers to learn fast and hit the ground running, though you'll receive all the appropriate guidance along the way. Liberty also hosts tournaments every week, and I highly recommend trying one out. I've found the atmosphere to be low-pressure and collegial, while still working hard to fence well. When possible, they like to run a 45-touch relay after the regular event, with both fencing and social benefits. TL;DR: Solid fencing, diverse group, welcoming and fun.
