So I talked my friend into a little reconnaissance mission. After yelp returned only this place when searching for 'soccer' in Eugene, we drove a little out of our way to find it. It's in the back of a strip mall, on the side, so keep an eye out for it on your way through. It's not directly on the road. It turns out they didn't have one, nor did they have much in the way of MLS stuff at all; it's not that kind of store. What they did have, however was a wide array of youth-team appropriate jerseys, shorts, socks and gear. Need 15 purple uniforms for The Soccers, the U-8 team in Eugene? DKS is the place for you. Need a German national team jersey with the popular Michael Ballack on it? They've got you covered. Need a David Beckham LA Galaxy jersey? Sorry, American soccer just isn't quite there yet. The owner was certainly nice enough in explaining why they didn't have what I was looking for, and there's nothing inherently bad about catering to the casual soccer fan, so don't think I'm slagging off on them. They're a good store that does what they do and anything that helps soccer grow in the US is ok by me. * - I have a thing about memorabilia. Sure, I could order one online, but things representing cities (or any sort of local institution -- colleges, teams, etc.) don't mean nearly as much if it's not purchased fairly close to the physical location of the institution. Not only was he kind, respectful and on a mission to satisfy my footwear needs, but he had encyclopedic knowledge about soccer cleats. He espoused minute factoids about what I could expect from a range of different brands and styles. He even recommended that I buy a dual purpose cleat for turf and grass because the men's city league would switch to turf in the rainy season. I was treated like a fucking king, and I felt awesome.

Loren seemed to take offense that I questioned why so much more money for the same set of wheels. I asked about Black Friday and was told that they rarely discount because of the diminished sense of value. I was (educated by Loren) in a condensing way about not seeing the real value of their wheels. Three months later they have Black Friday on all their wheels. Think they could have extended the black Friday to a repeat customer. Apparently not. Their customer service sucks. I bought a set of wheels from a competitor, and they are better, lighter, faster wheels and the company was willing to work with me.

I came in to check out one alt handlebar (Jones H Bar) and they had it in stock along with the other bar I was considering (Surley Moloko) so I got a good feel for both of them. They had a good price on both too. In a world of mega shops and online retailers, this is the kind of place really stands out, allowing the customer to check out equipment hands on and make better informed decisions. Edit to add: a couple things that this shop didn't have that made it a great place to shop; no high pressure, and no "hyper-masculine" attitude. I was able to look and check out items without someone peering over my shoulder, and a number of different folks came in and I noticed the staff was helpful to all of them. As to the lack of a hyper-masculine culture- well anyone who bikes a lot knows that biking, and bike shops tend to suffer from a certain culture- lots of talking of pace lines or peloton, shredding and scar comparison. They can also be dismissive of overweight and older people (such as myself) who might need, um... more robust equipment.... The staff treated this middle aged ultra Clyde as a serious rider which I really appreciated. This shop was very oriented to bikes as fun an and transportation, with gear that is useful to most people who want to get out and enjoy riding and commuting. They may have more specialized equipment as well but I wasn't looking for that and so can't speak to it. But if you are an avid rider looking for more comfortable handlebars or that perfect rack bag, they definitely are worth checking out. Got the bars and tape and very happy with my purchase!
