Wow they finished the remodeling for the lockers, shower and added a sauna. This feels very luxurious now, and it's also clean... For now. Now they need to remodel the actual gym or at least improve the layout to make it more logical to move from one area to another so it doesn't feel like you're walking through a maze. My trainer Nelson is FIVE STARS and the staff here are great. However: Equipment goes unrepaired for a long time. They hike prices every year faster than inflation, and the gym is now overcrowded all the time. Parking is completely inadequate. Showers break constantly and sinks are so low-flow that they are unusable. Trainer prices are high, and there are no meaningful discounts to year long commitments with them. Throw in an expensive new dry sauna nobody wanted - and that nobody wants to use because it might as well be facing the sidewalk. read more

I've really enjoyed my experience training with Dianne at this gym. I have a pretty active lifestyle already but wanted to add strength training to round out my routine, get more toned, and improve my fitness. It's only been a month meeting twice a week and I'm very happy with the results; I've lost a couple pounds and gotten a lot stronger, and have a whole new repertoire of exercises Dianne taught me. I like that the gym has free usage of InBody machines to check progress and massage chairs for recovery. They are adding a women's sauna as well. read more

This has been my favorite workout spot since moving to SF nearly half a year ago. I workout at 5 am so it's nice to have the gym empty around that time; also, working out with the other morning regulars has been neat. I'm gonna try to summarize my 2 year experience as a member: - gym crowd is meh.. gym etiquette is significantly lacking! But! - gym is well stocked! Especially for bench press and squat racks! - they constantly update their machines, meaning get rid of old ones and replacing them with new ones - very clean! They don't understaff their maintenance and cleaning teams, they are constantly cleaning, vacuuming, etc - free parking! - very nice, welcoming front desk staff and personal trainers! It is a very well equipped and maintained faculty with friendly caring team! read more

The gym has decided to raise their dues in the middle of an economic downturn, while doing very little to improve. Realistically the main reason I choose this gym is convenience to my apartment, but it offers nothing special and is very cramped inside. I paid $29.99 when I first signed up for this gym 15 years ago. Now it's $129.99. I'm No mathematician, but minimum wage and rents have not even doubled in that time period, so why have your dues more than quadrupled? The showers have been closed for 3 months now for a much needed renovation, and look nowhere near completed. I'm happy they're being redone because they were gross, but it's been at least 15 years since any improvements were made. As part of that renovation, many of the parking spaces are also blocked off every day which makes it that much more difficult to park. Speaking of parking, there's a 2 hour limit while working out. Very often I see people pull in, park and then walk off to restaurants etc in non-gym clothes and not even pretend like they're going to work out. Or return to their car in street clothes with shopping bags etc. The staff don't ever enforce parking rules or times. It's like you don't actually care about your actual clients. Rules inside are not enforced either. People do not put weights back. People take equipment for extended periods of time while sitting on work meetings on laptops, or setting up tripods to pose for social media. People have loud phone conversations on speakerphone. People claim 3 pieces of equipment at once and don't allow other members to work in. When you notify a staff member about any of this, they sigh and really do not want to have to be involved. If you want to charge a premium for a gym, then make it a premium gym with enforced rules and cleanliness so your clients know they can come in and work out efficiently and not wait for people on laptops to finish work meetings in the squat racks. It's not our job to enforce the rules or call people out for bad behavior. The staff should be regularly making rounds and doing this. Staff always say they'll address this but nothing changes. Nothing is enforced. And I know it's a fetish; but personal hygiene has gotten out of control at this gym. Members need to be considerate of other people and recognize that their BO fetish shouldn't be forced on everyone. And the management should be monitoring this. I have a right to workout without choking on pepper-spray like funk from other members. I've commented on this before and management said they'd address it. They haven't. On a positive note, I haven't seen the awful rude older front desk clerk in months. He was always so mean and cold. At least everyone working at the desk now is friendly and nice to members as they come and go. That's been a refreshing change. Overall I do enjoy the convenience of this location. And I'm glad they're making some improvements on showers etc. but I'm constantly disappointed in the selfishness and lack of consideration from other members and that the staff do not enforce their own rules EVER. It's just gotten worse with more people working from home: the gym is not a place to have your conference calls. read more

I would highly recommend working with Nelson Otero as a personal trainer, whether you are a novice or a fitness buff. I signed up with Fitness SF at Castro gym and used that gym and SOMA, Brennan St gym. I spoke with front desk attendant in December, letting him know that i was moving and that I would not be using SF Fitness anymore. He did not tell me I needed to do anything else to end my membership and have been sent notices to pay for January, after I have moved. I left a message at Castro gym for a call back and didn't receive one. I call again and spoke with Mike who informed me that I needed to send an ema to a special address to cancel my membership and question the bill. I received an email back saying I needed to pay for January despite having canceled it previously with an SF Fitness employe. This person provided no number to call and discuss this and there is no information online to contact corporate SF Fitness about their billing error. read more

They only lubricate the equipment biannually when the machines are at death's door. This creates a hazardous condition for users. No amount of complaining, asking or pleading will help to hasten this vital much needed gym machine maintenance. Been a member for over 6 months. There's an ample amount of equipment (which is rarely out of order like at other gyms), lots of room for stretching, situps and doing other free moving exercises. There's a nice view of market st where the cardio machines are.... and overall there's positive vibes all around. Super gay forward since it's in the castro which is a huge bonus for me as a gay man. Lots of cuties walking around. The men's shower is a big square room with the faucets on the wall... which means that everyone can see everyone's business. This might be a con for some, but for me it's a definite bonus and reward for finishing a tough workout haha. read more

The Castro location is busy- it is a smaller location, and I still give such a high rating for the quality and variety of equipment, the frequency by which they replace old/worn out equipment, and the overall vibe. They have such a great variety of strength training equipment, several squat racks, benches, and the plates are all new (no rusty metal). The folks here are welcoming! The space is safe, no really creepy people staring/taking pics of you. The trainers seem fantastic- I got a fitness assessment to learn more and they give solid advice to build great health/lifestyle. You need to bring your own lock for the locker room, there's showers. There's a lot to like about this gym and I've been going off and on since the pandemic. First, the positive: equipment is pretty well maintained and things don't stay out of order very long. They also have pretty much every thing you could need for weights and generally there's not much of a wait for equipment. I also love that there are a ton of windows and they open them which is awesome as gyms and germs often go together. This would be a 4 star review if it weren't for the locker rooms. The showers are a huge negative. They're set up as a big open area, which is what it is, but they took the door off so it's cold and open to everyone at the sinks. In addition, there's crime scene tape on the sauna, which is definitely not a great look in SF. I tend to opt for the Salesforce location whenever I can, since that gym feels like a whole other level. read more

It is a pretty well appointed gym for its size (e.g., types and quantities of equipment) and is reasonably priced for the location and some amenities. Access to an add-on of personal training sessions with Nelson Otero is the highlight. Even over 50, I've made measurable gains in the past few months. I appreciate Nelson's variety of workouts, and especially his excellent assessment and instruction regarding correct form for precise impact. I just want to put in a good word for Ruben, a personal trainer at Fitness SF in Castro. I am in my 50s and felt like my general health was not great after COVID: running out of breath walking up the hill, fatigued, gaining wait, low spirits. Having an intense office career did not help either. I started working with Ruben approximately 3 years ago and it has been a very positive and productive experience: my spirits are up, my exercise tolerance and strength have improved, and I feel so much better overall.
