Five Acres gets five stars for the food and service, but zero for location and ambiance. You feel like you are eating in the lobby coffee shop of a hotel. The restaurant is completely open to the concourse and people around you. Although you are on the ice skating rink level of Rockefeller Center there is no view of the skating. Simply the worst possible spot. But the food! The food is amazing. It is truly outstanding. Extraordinarily creative. The dishes are as complex as they are unique. While vegetable forward, there are plenty of meat and seafood options. The only slight fail was the bread and butter board, although the toasted bread was outstanding. The cocktails and desserts were also very good. We will be back, but if Five Acres were in a different location we would be back there all the time. A very creative and surprising new dining experience, but the service was not as good - the service was not bad but just very basic. The foods are very creative - for lots of dishes - they use a very well-known name but make a completely different thing (in a good way) - which is the part that I liked the most, such as the lamb "Gyro", Oysters Rockefeller etc. My favorite dish was the gilled guinea hen - it made a perfect combination with the financier cake. My least favorite one was the surf and turf crab cake. By mentioning the "turf" I thought there would be some beef portion but it was literally "turf" - the salad. And the crab cake itself wasn't good at all either. The fried batter outside was way too thick, which ruined the whole experience. We had to peel all crust and only ate the inside meat. Last but not least, the cocktails are the most surprising part! They are the best cocktails I had in a while. Anyway, my overall comment is - this is a place that is worth trying if you happen to be near around, but not worth to make it here only for this restaurant. They define themselves as "fine dining" in google map, but to me it's more like a casual dining. Went for lunch while waiting for a taping of the Tonight Show. The menu is small, but most dishes looked amazing. I ordered the butter board, since I was going out for dinner later. Would have loved to give more stars. The problem was the flies. So. Many. Flies. One landed right on my bread, another on the little pot of herbs. Worst restaurant experience I've had in a very long time. From the beginning, the service wasn't welcoming, nevertheless, when a kid spots pizza on the menu plus it's a holiday in a typical office work environment, you go for it. (Tip: Ace pizza nearby would have been a go if it was open). We knew what we were getting and quickly ordered; received the food not long after. The chicken with mash were pretty tasty, but the fries were very salty and the pizza we came for was an instant reject for a kid who had basic pizza expectations. Worst of all, the pizza wasn't cut into slices so imagine the mess. I'm not sure the last time I've been served an uncut pie (this is personal size). Not once did someone check in on us and we had to ask for napkins to receive a very dry response. To add, there were 2-3 other tables max occupied at this time. There's many places in NYC with shabby food and service, but not many that make you feel soo unwelcome AND serve 1/3 decent tasting plates on top of the automatic 20% gratuity add. The tip was upfront and wasn't an initial turnoff given the lack of options at Rock center on this specific day, but the service definitely does not call for it. Never again. read more

First the food was good. It's the service and their system I did not like. I went to lunch last week with a friend, we ordered our food and coffee. During our lunch I ran out of coffee and no one approached us to refill. I also asked for mustard , the first person did not bring it, I had to ask again and finally got it. Our server was pleasant. She took our order and did not see her again to ask if everything was ok. Actually I had to track her down for the bill. Also this restaurant puts an automatic 20% tip on and there was just two of us. Very unfair for them to assume. Made a lunch reservation last minute for a birthday with the bf. This was my second time visiting Five Acres. Last time the menu was different: if I remember correctly I had lobster 3 ways which I didn't enjoy, oysters smoked and with gelatin ...was interesting and a dessert with pear which wasn't memorable. The good part was the bar, the drinks were well balanced and super tasty. This time I loved the menu and really enjoyed my meal and my cocktail (the cherry old fashioned) . Today I had the seafood plateau, calamari and mushroom risotto. All were delicious! The bf had pork schnitzel... also delicious! We both enjoyed the affogato for dessert. Since it was a bday they surprised us with a small ice cream cookie sandwich with a candle. Super cute! So yes, the service is top tier also. I would definitely return. 5 star! read more

It was a standard pour for $22 which is fine for location and also the uniqueness of the Whiskey which was delish. The service at the bar was spot on with Ashley behind the bar being very conscious of refilling water and being an all around good bartender. It was described as rinkside so I thought we would be able to see the ice skaters but there is no visibility the rink, just random people walking by looking at you looking at them knowing you are overpaying for a meal. The location deep in the bowels of Rockefeller Center (Rink Level) was one of the only places we felt would meet our needs and was open after a late Sunday afternoon theater performance. Open air-no walls-dining area pretty much in the middle of the arcade shopping area. Seated promptly and offered beverages. It felt like the staff was short a body or two as waits for attention were long for there being only a few patrons. And it dwindled during our visit. It is hard to honestly say the service was worth the gratuity. This lack of value continued into our meal. I am well aware that things cost more all around and the restaurant business is difficult and good labor is hard to attract and keep, etc. But if you have to charge $20+ for a glorified French Dip ($21) and a basic cheeseburger ($23) even if they come with fries, then maybe they should be replaced by other dishes. The French Dip is actually menu listed as a Chicago Beef Sandwich-the added house made Giardiniera being the only difference. We settled on these and after our wait, were disappointed to find dry sliced beef on one and a deeply well-done patty on the other. The au jus provided some solace on the sandwich, though it was quite salty to our taste, and more tomato condiment helped the burger. Servers asking the question on preferred doneness or a menu note would help with the burger situation. Fries were quite tasty. The meal filled us up and didn't make us sick. The restaurant is located a little away from the rink, so no view, and is not closed off from the rest of the hallway, so it has a bit of a mall food court feel. However, the food, drinks, and service are excellent. We had a tuna tartare which was almost too beautiful to eat, a fresh and delicious shave fennel Caesar salad, an original take on lamb "gyros". and finished with a great lemon dessert. Prices are comparable to other similar restaurants in that neighborhood. Overall, a great option, if you are in the area anyway, but will get similar quality food @ Olmsted in a better setting. read more
