Dear Irving is what you imagine a New York speakeasy to be. It's a beautiful cocktail parlor in a few locations but we go to the Gramercy location. It's quaint, elegant, kitschy, and all things you want in a special cocktail experience. There are several rooms to choose from including the JFK room that looks like you're on the set of Mad Men. The Gatsby room is perfectly over the top in design and our favorite, the Marie Antoinette room with chandeliers, gilded stools and sofas. The cocktails are some of the best we had in the city. The menu is extensive with custom creations and classics, but their off-menu execution is exceptional. We've been to a lot of great places that encourage off menu, but it can be spotty if they get your request right. The bartenders are true pros and everything we ordered was delicious and represented exactly what we asked for. We think they're some kind of wizards. The service is as attentive as anywhere we've been. It's the right rhythm to always be there when you need them without being annoying. They have their model down cold which is why we go back almost every time we're back in NYC. The first cocktail we asked for was an old fashioned variation made with scotch and some holiday flavors like allspice, a rich Amaro, cinnamon, or whatever they were feeling. It ended up to be a nice balance of highland scotch, Montenegro (Amaro), banana liqueur, cinnamon syrup and Barspoon of Islay scotch. It was delicious (photo 2). The second was a whiskey flip. They mixed both rye whiskey and cognac for the base with Lucano Amaro, allspice, simple syrup and winter bitters. It was the perfect nightcap (photo 7). I can't recommend Dear Irving enough if you're looking for a memorable cocktail experience. Grab some friends and enjoy a special place. Salute @thejohnnycocktail #newyork #cocktails #cocktailphotography

Perfect, intimate date night spot. Really cool option to have a button you can press when you need to call your waiter. Good drinks and nice menu selection.

Very nice ambiance and interesting menu. The server was super nice but he brought me the wrong drink. He really was super nice and seemed like he was trying and maybe he was new? So I didn't want to say anything. I ended up with this blueberry whiskey drink and I thought it left a bitter and strange aftertaste that wasn't so pleasant. Would definitely say for the taste the bar is overpriced.

Absolutely loved the vibes at Dear Irving. The lounge seating paired with the beaded curtains adds a classy touch while still giving you a sense of privacy. Need to order? No problem, just press the button right next to your seat. Our party of five had an excellent time from start to finish. Perfect setting for a date or cocktails with friends!

Met up with a friend in New York to have a few drinks and Dear Irving was the place we ended up going. This bar is super cute and they have an adorable drink menu. I already forgot what I ordered but it was nice and delicious. I do know that it was a whiskey-based drink similar to an old-fashioned. The bar tenders are also super nice. Had a fun night and that is all that matters!

Very cool experience, we had a larger party (6 people) and had a reservation - all our drinks were incredible. The building has such an amazing blend of old school, New York with 10 press ceilings and a splash of art deco.

Came to this super cute cocktail bar with my friends. I loved the atmosphere, it was perfect for sitting and chatting comfortably. The drinks were also good! Would come back!

We didn't make a reservation but we're sat down within 15 minutes. Great decor and great service, plus great drinks. Super cute date spot.

Still a fan of Dear Irving. Feeling adventurous? Tell your server or bartender what you like and see what they come up with. I've not been disappointed once. When I'm not going for a dealer's choice, my current fave drink is the Gibson.

Pretty comfy fun bar. Theres many different areas with different vibes. The back room is really great.

My fiancé made reservations here to celebrate right after she proposed, and let me tell you, it was absolutely perfect. Honestly, the ambiance is the star of the show--imagine cozy, plush couches and this dreamy Victorian-inspired vibe (I think that's what you'd call it, though I might be wrong, haha). It's just so warm and inviting, making it feel like you're in a special little hideaway. As if that wasn't sweet enough, they greeted us with complimentary champagne and a beautiful "congratulations" card, which is still proudly displayed on our fridge! The staff was so lovely, and everything about our visit just made it feel like a place we'll always hold near and dear :)

Ask the Community - Dear Irving Gramercy

Is this place opened during covid?

    Yes, they were/are

Do you need to make a reservation if you're just planning on having drinks?

It's very small so if you have time to possibly wait then no resy is needed but if you have plans following drinks then I would highly suggest a resy.

Does this place play music? And if so what kind of music?

No music. Martinis, conversation, and other ambiance. Enjoy.

Is there a happy hour special?

What do people wear when going here?

I'd say a bit nicer than other bars. A nice blouse or coat is a good idea. Definitely not a sweatshirt and tennis shoes kind of place.

Do we need to make a reservation?

I would advise it yes, just in case. The wait isn't bad though since you can go right downstairs to a neighboring bar for a pre-drink :)

Is this place good for dancing?

No... the place is very small and there is certainly no dance floor.

Our friends raved about this place and we of course were excited (and a bit skeptical at first) to try it. The concept: no menu + no lights + a few questions = the ultimate cocktail experience. The speakeasy vibe and the dark ambiance really makes this place feel even more exclusive. With just a few tables and the bar setting, you're in for an experience you won't forget (unless you answer the wrong questions and really end up with a drink you don't like HA). This wasn't my case. Of course I described my two favorite things: Negroni + mezcal. The obvious answer would be a mezcal Negroni, but that's not why one comes to a place like Attaboy. Our amazing curator came by to ask us all a few questions, write down a few words in the napkins, and mix up the perfect drink that our master bartender crafts, curates and creates. My drink came as I couldn't possibly imagine. It looked like a Negroni smelled like Oaxaca, with all the smoke simmering up and preparing my sensory experience, leading to the best first sip. Ladies and gentleman, I introduce you to The Devil's Backbone. A perfectly balanced drink I'll never forget, one that is sipped slowly and enjoyed thoroughly. It's sexy, it's smoky it's sipped. Attaboy gave the best mixology experience and we can't wait to be back. Pro tip: be sure to be as vocal as possible, even with ice, so you don't end up with a tiki drink if that's not your vibe.

He called us to let us know our table was ready but we missed the call (our fault). We returned the call immediately and got there within a couple minutes anyway. We were ready to patiently wait for the next availability but were met with some attitude and unnecessary comments from him during the waiting experience. It adds a layer of character to the place, but what really keeps people coming back is the atmosphere and the drinks. The space is split into two levels: a two lively, sawdust-floored Taprooms downstairs and a more refined Parlor upstairs if you're in the mood for a quieter, cocktail-focused experience.
