Patent Pending in Flatiron is such a fun speakeasy experience. I love this place. Expect a wait during peak hours, but it is worth it once you get inside. The whole vibe is creative and a little quirky in the best way. The menu is one of the coolest parts. They include diagrams showing what each drink looks like, which makes it easy to explore and try something new. I especially loved their takes on the Old Fashioned. I ended up ordering both versions (one was on the seasonal menu) and did not regret it. Definitely a spot I would come back to.

Cozy speakeasy bar with a great theme. The cocktails and service - amazing. The menu was so creative a fun to flip through!

Shake me Down

We did a speed visit before we had to hop back on the train. The decor was dope, but it was dark as hell in there lol. All good, we have phones. The menu itself was beautifully done and included good descriptions of each drink. The bartender got our orders quickly and got our drinks out to us. The shake me down is served warm with this raspberry foam that they torch and turns into kind of a marshmallow situation. My wife had an Odd Love, which drank similar to a old fashioned. All-in-all, we will definitely be back the next time we're in town for a show.

A memorable experience The entrance through a (closed) coffee shop sets the speakeasy tone of the room. The location in a building that Tesla once used is the inspiration for the Telsa-themed cocktail names. We made a reservation and included 3 cocktails each and a small charcuterie plate. Every cocktail was outstanding! Unusual ingredients, many made at the bar, and precise construction was the rule for each drink. The staff were clearly focused on making our experience as enjoyable as possible.

Ordered: Strange Magic Cocktail (~$21): vodka, strawberry, madeira, grapefruit, lemon, prosecco, seltzer Marconi's 2nd Miracle Cocktail (~$32): Genever, Reposado tequila, lillet blanc, aperol, kaffir lime, jasmine tea, tangerine peel, clarified milk Bespoke Cocktail similar to Pisco Sour (~$23): with vodka, egg white, cardamom, saffron, cinnamon Aya's take: Patent Pending is a speakeasy located in the cellar of the Radio Wave building. Enter through Patent Coffee and wait there for someone to take you to the back bar area. Apparently, this is the building where Nikola Tesla lived and performed many experiments. Kudos to whoever designed the menu; it's informative, artistic, and unique! I like that it's split by Energy, Frequency, Vibration, Descent, and Legacy. The Strange Magic Cocktail is on the Energy menu which is meant to be clean, bright, and a crisp welcome to the night. I would say that's a solid description as the drink is super light (almost too light, in my opinion), fruity, and refreshing. I would've liked if the flavors were more prominent personally and the amount of ice made this super watered down. The Marconi's 2nd Miracle Cocktail is on the Legacy menu which is meant to be luxurious, rich, and made with intricate preparation. Another very accurate description. Every sip was true elegance. It's silky, floral, and citrusy. This one had so much depth and the more I sipped, the more I could taste the various flavors. Since we were sitting at the bar, we saw that this was just poured from a large batch. Apparently it's a 4-day process to make this and I trust it was fresh but I would've loved to see the mixology process. Lastly, we got a Bespoke Cocktail similar to Pisco Sour which was a true highlight! It was also a great reminder for me to not be afraid to ask the bartender for suggestions especially if they are expert mixologists like they were here! This drink was earthy, aromatic, and balanced. Every sip unfolded into something more and the airy texture of the egg white was remarkable. If any of the staff read this review, please tell me what was in this drink so I know how to order it again lol! Intimate, unpretentious, inventive - highly recommend!

Patent Pending is one of those speakeasies that instantly reminds you why New York stays undefeated. The ambience is incredible, intimate lighting, rich textures, that subtle hum of energy you only get in a well-run cocktail den. It feels like stepping into a secret you actually want to keep. The craft mixologists here are the real deal. Precise, creative, and clearly proud of what they do, they turn classic cocktails into something that hits a little deeper. The local bourbon they use shines in both the whiskey sour and the old-fashioned, smooth, balanced, and exactly what you want from a bar that takes its drinks seriously. The service? Phenomenal. So good that I ended up coming back a second time during the same trip because the first visit just wasn't enough. Everything from the pacing to the hospitality was on point. If you want a true New York speakeasy experience that delivers every time, Patent Pending is absolutely worth the repeat visit.

Light Me Up, Currents & Coils, etc.

A few girl friends and I came by on a Friday night for some post-dinner drinks. It's a cool speakeasy hidden behind a coffee shop where the AC is blasting --perfect on a hot summer night. The speakeasy is inspired from Nikola Tesla (as he actually once lived in this building) with light bulbs adorning the ceiling. It's got a chill vibe and some drinks with ingredients that sound great, although none really stood out to me that much. I had the Light Me Up ($21), which was good. I'd come here for the speakeasy-vibes, but drink didn't quite hit the spot for me. Hopefully would try something better next time, but cool spot overall.

One of my favorite bars in the city! The inside is just so cool- it's tucked behind Patent Coffee and has two rooms (the back one is cooler IMO). Very dark with good vibes- perfect for date night. The menu is my favorite, I love the inventor notebook-esque drawings for each drink. They also have seasonal drinks. I've tried a lot of drinks here and I'd say the Electric Messiah lives up to the hype. I also loved my most recent one- a refreshing seasonal one with limoncello and yogurt. The Impossible Idea with a side of torched banana is strong but delicious. Light me Up is the classic one that comes smoked with a whole presentation- another great drink. Honestly the entire menu is worth trying haha. Service is always super helpful and friendly. The bartenders and servers are both really knowledgeable- definitely ask them for recs. Overall- fantastic bar and definitely worth a visit!

One of my favorite bars in the city. I mean, we're talking about a speakeasy with great drinks, vibey decor and the nicest bartenders/ servers. I don't think I've had one bad drink and the presentation is amazing.

Amazing place! I went last minute with some friends and luckily we were able to get seated right away. At first we couldn't find it, which made it much more rewarding to have found it and seated easily. The drinks were all amazing and crafted with a lot of care. I got the Hit By a Taxi and AC DC? which were both fantastic! One of my friends ordered the Radio Waves and claims it was one of the best drinks he's ever had. It was one of those nights where you are having such a good time you forget to snap a picture. Luckily, I was able to get one of the AC DC. The service was good even though there was only one person running around managing a ton of tables. I forget her name but she was blonde. Regardless, she did it well and with a smile which always helps. I will 1000% be returning here when I am back in New York.

Great speakeasy and a great location too We tried going last time but was too crowded but we were able to walk in at 5 pm on a weekend and they had lots of seating! I thought the cheese plate was super worth it and they give you a lot for the price as well The vibe in there is great and is a great bar to go to. Lots of options for cocktails as well

Strange Magic

I actually stumbled upon this speakeasy. I was scheduled to have dinner with my friend at Oscar Wilde right next door. She was running late so I wandered into this place. It's a coffee shop but in the back, behind the shelf, there's a speakeasy. It's located in the same building that Nicola Tesla lived in while he lived in New York, Radio Wave Building. So the menu is designed to look like schematic drawings - it's quite creative. When I first went there, it was not busy at all. You do have to wait at the front and wait to be seated. I got Strange Magic the first time which is a cool, strawberry refresher, so to speak. After dinner, i took my friend there and the host guy recognized me and was like "you again?". We did have to wait a bit for a table. There's a section in the back behind the initial bar and booths. There's another bar in the back. This time around, I got An Eastern Americano, which is a coffee based drink. It really does taste like an Americano with a twist. I don't remember what my friend got but she really enjoyed the ambiance. It's quite dark inside, very dim. So I had a hard time reading the menu but you eventually make out what's on it. And of course, it's busy inside so it's quite loud as well. But it's a great place to hang out with your friends and I definitely recommend it. Get there early to snag a table!

Recommend: the "Impossible Idea", a sweet and smooth variation of a mezcal with rum, served with blackened bananas on the side to enjoy while sipping. Overview: This speakeasy is hidden behind the coffee shop. I went by myself on a Friday night and got a seat for myself rather quickly, but if you go with more people, you'll likely have to wait unless you reserve. I liked the electricity theme, seen through the drinks, menu and decor. The bar area was a bit louder than most other speakeasies I've been to. Service is attentive, and the bartenders are friendly with good recs. First, I tried one of the seasonal drinks, the "Static Storm", which was a blend of rums with an interesting flavors from sichuan peppers and tobacco. Fun combination with a summer vibe. Next I had my favorite drink of the night, the "Impossible Idea". Finished with their version of a whiskey sour, the "Light Me Up". This one has an "amplified" version that I ordered, which is the same drink but with a stronger whiskey (120 proof). Not for the faint of heart, but I enjoyed it.

What are the chances I can get in before they close if I get there at midnight? I have a late flight coming in so curious if they'll still take walk ins since they close at 2am

I filled out the form online but no one is picking up on either the phone number they gave after the form was filled out or the number listed online. How do I get my credit card number for the pre-fix drinks? Are they still open right now?

No answer, but I'm having the same issue, fairly frustrating.

I understand that we won't be seated until we are both present, but if I get there early can I put my name down so that my date doesn't have to wait so long when she arrives?

Yes you can. Only problem would come up if your name is called and she's still not there. Then they may push you down the list again.

If I'm meeting soneone there...do I have to wait for them to be seated?

Yes. All party members must be present to be seated.

Are there stairs to get to the speakeasy or is it on the main level?

Yes, there are a few stairs to get into the coffee shop then it's straight through to the speak easy!

How is this place on a Thursday night? Is there usually a long wait as some of the reviews explained? How's the dress code?

Hey Carolina thanks for reaching out! Since all of us New Yorkers work too hard during the week, Thursday nights are pretty popular as you can imagine :/ If you come before 6pm you're pretty much guaranteed no wait - and later in the night probably… Read more

You need a password (easy to find online), and you go through a hidden door down a staircase. But it feels more like a novelty than anything else. NYC has way more iconic speakeasies, so this isn't somewhere I'd go out of my way for more than once. Nothing wrong with the vibe--it's Times Square, so you already know what you're getting--but it's definitely a one-and-done kind of spot. The drinks are good and super fun, but they're very extra (smoke, presentation, all that), so between that and how packed it gets, it can take a while just to get one cocktail. Didn't try the food. Overall, go for the pics and TikToks--it's perfect for that. I'd recommend checking it out once, but I don't really see it being a repeat spot.

I also got the foreign forage, "a bourbon smash with a mint zing." It was also a delicious take on a classic. They have several types of cocktails, all broken down by spirit and flavor profile. They also offer a lot of spirits made in New York State. They have cocktails with earthy notes, fruity notes, fancy martinis, and a section boasting limited edition and special spirits, if you're "feeling fancy" and wanna cough up 35 bucks instead of 20 or 25! They have a bar snacks menu (sliders, nuts, and the like). I had their thick cut fries and they were light, seasoned, and tasty. I couldn't stop eating them. Midtown or not, I highly recommend this spot, which also has a couple other locations, including Gramercy.

It IS a small bar, but there were only about 4-5 folks here already, engrossed in a conversation at the bar that anyone could join. I quietly took a seat at one of the 3 tables on the plush high-top bench and the lone, friendly bartendress was immediately attentive (I was greeted the moment I stepped through the door!). Now, there's no ACTUAL liquor here, ONLY the beer and wine on the small menu, so don't try asking her to whip you up something not on the menu. Luckily for me, there was a fruity sangria special, so I opted for that, served with a decorative shark adornment and a metal straw, and was immediately given a little bucket of popcorn to accompany it. Now, this is part of the reason why I wanted to check this place out. Fresh popcorn is my weakness. Bars that give free snacks with drinks are top tier in my book. You could probably lure me into the back of a white van with a signature red and white filled popcorn bucket. So I sat, and I sipped, and I munched, and I listened to the conversation from the others, and the bartendress, god bless her, would check on my bucket and refill it any time it got low. Now I'm really a mixed drink girly, but the vibes were SO cool here that I would most definitely come back. :D Also note, there's cool little padded seating by the window that I noticed that would be great for people-watching outside.
