The colorful tiles added warmth to the space; the marble bar top was beautiful; the chandeliers harken back to the hotel's 1905 beginnings. I opted for a pastel sour while my companion asked for a drink called The Last Word - it was no longer on the menu but they obligingly made it for us anyway. The menu consists of mostly small plates and is seafood forward, but we shared a petite dish of steak frites, tender and cooked perfectly medium rare. Our server was very sweet but service was slow on the night, and by the time we received our utensils the food was cold. However we were not rushed and were able to linger a bit to finish our conversation. We started with half a dozen oysters, which were fresh, briny, and exactly what you want with serious cocktails. Crisp, clean, gone in about three minutes. For drinks, we ordered the Smoke Show and the King Tusk. The Smoke Show was beautifully balanced. The Grey Goose vodka and Dolin Dry gave it that classic martini backbone, but the fino sherry and brine added depth. The smoked olive oil and blue cheese olive brought just enough savory drama without overpowering the glass. It was complex but not fussy. The King Tusk leaned more aromatic and layered. The vermouths gave it richness, while the Buddha's Hand and osmanthus flower added subtle citrus and floral notes that lingered in a really elegant way. My friends and I went here on Saturday night and had managed to snag a same day reservation for the bar. The bar and restaurant are inside of the Evelyn hotel and are lovely dimly lit, sexy spaces. We were seated right away in very comfortable plush seats and our waitress walked us through the menu. The bar menu is quite extensive with innovative cocktails, wines and spirits. They also have a smaller food menu, but have a lot of variety which is nice. For drinks we ordered the ruby slipper, the second arrival and unfortunately a drink that I can't find on the online menu. We all loved our drinks though, as they were delicious and crafted with perfection. As for food, we were all hungry, so we ordered a number of things off the menu. We ordered the snapper tartare, the house foccacia, the cheese plate, the tomato salad, the grilled mushroom tartine, the fried stuffed olives and the chickpea fritters. We all loved the dishes, with our favorites being the salad, the bread and the chickpea fritters. The atmosphere is elegant and upscale without feeling pretentious, but it's the service that truly sets this place apart. TLDR: posh space with solid drinks, and attentive service. Came in on a Friday night. Loved the warm, lower lighting, high ceilines, and the intimate vibe. One of the first things I noticed was the ostrich on the wall LOL We were supposed to be a group of three, but we unexpectedly grew to a group of six and they were super accommodating! As a large group, we got to try several of the drinks on the current menu. These were my favorites: Community Garden - Gin and chartreuse drink with watermelon, aloe, and preserved lemon. It was refreshing and easy to drink. I hope they keep this on the menu for a while. Upon Arrival - Gin and St. German highball with shiso and yuzu that my friends got multiple times because it was super crushable. Ruby slipper - A yogurt washed gin, grapefruit, cucumber (and other things I'm forgetting) drink that I found quite nice as well. For food, we just got olives to pick at while we were drinking. They were obviously of quality, but I'll have to return and try more items. From the looks on other people's faces while they were eating around us, food seemed pretty good! Overall: I'm gonna return to try more drinks and food to update my review, but for now, I can easily see myself frequent this place. Tusk Bar had long been on my list but I rarely find myself in this neighborhood so I had forgotten about it for some time. I made a dinner reservation in the area and wanted to have a bar on standby in case we wanted a nightcap (or two) afterwards, and there was Tusk Bar, where it always had been. When we showed up they had just finished taking food orders (it was probably around 10:45) but thankfully on this trip we were only here for the cocktails. What we got was a magical experience, for me full of truly masterful martinis and for my partner a parade of flavors both curious and satisfying. An ideal spot for a date or to take some out of town guests to majorly impress them with all that the NYC restaurant and bar scene has to offer. We came here on a Saturday night and opted to sit at the bar, as we like to do at any cocktail bar if space is available. Given that it was on the later side we had no issues. The space itself is absolutely stunning: tastefully designed, swanky and classy, with a sprawling, subtly lit bar. Even before we ordered the drinks I had a good feeling about the place, just exudes the energy of being upscale and refined yet not pretentious. The drinks were exactly that. Though every single drink on the menu looked absolutely outstanding to me, I'm a martini girl through and through so I had to take advantage of the martini menu. To start, I got the King Tusk (Bombay Sapphire 1er cru gin, house vermouth blend, lemongrass, buddha hand, barley), which was one of the most complex martini variations I've ever ordered yet it was still crisp and clean, with vegetal/earthy and citrus notes. Completely blew me away. For the second drink I was torn. I really do not like vodka and you will never see me go out of my way to order a vodka martini. I said this to the bartender, alongside my intrigue about the Smoke Show (Grey Goose vodka, Noilly Prat, fino sherry, blue cheese brine, savory bitters, smoked olive oil), which looked almost too good to pass up. The bartender told me that he too does not go for vodka martinis, but that the other elements of this drink really carry the flavor profile such that the vodka-ness somehow fades into the background. And, well, he was right. Again, blown away. If you're a dirty martini person and you like blue cheese brine, this is a no-brainer. This is mixology excellence. While I can't remember what my partner's first drink was, his second was the Long Vacation (Suntory Toki, SG shochu, mizunara, banana, toasted rice, coconut water, CO2), which we both loved. Unique with a hint of molecular gastronomy, a great nightcap for folks who aren't into a super spiritous drink. read more

Pavlova! Age and I both like Pavlova so when I saw that The Tusk Bar had it on their dessert menu it was providence that we should celebrate Age's birthday there.
