Overall, this was the worst Five Guys experience I've ever had, which is disappointing because it's usually a solid spot. We were charged for two items we didn't order (to their credit, they did refund them), but the food was the real issue. The first burger literally slid out of the wrapper and into a mess as soon as I picked it up. The bottom buns were completely soggy, and the burgers just fell apart. Music and barriers made it impossible to hear the soft spoken gentleman taking our order. Mens restroom had no paper towels. Water running across floor from soft drink machines. No ketchup in dispenser or packets. Asked and received fast. First experience started rocky. Bacon cheeseburgers for us and a cheese bacon hot dog. Medium fries were too many! One order for both and we didn't get half eaten. Burgers and dog were 4 star. The rest drug the rating down. Maybe an off night. read more

Can you smell what they are cooking? Yep, the sizzle grabs your nose all the way in the parking lot. Speaking of parking lot, it was jammed with loads of cars from all around Ames. The cooks were hard at work and the background music was jamming. The fries were the winners of the evening, because each slice was sizzling hot and highly seasoned. But watch out when you get your bill --oh yea-- $$ pricey burgers--it's not Mickey D's where you can get fries, drink and a burger for $10.00. My bacon burger specialty was $10.15 -- must have been the bacon that drove up the price--but what's a burger without mouth watering bacon--and I got it all the way with everything on it but grilled onions. I heard a lot about the Five Guy Milk Shake--it was smooth, creamy with a burst of strawberries deliciousness almost as good as Dairy Queen. The whole lot (my tab) was over $21 plus tax...yikes...pricey! But if you want fresh meat, not dry condiments, (and real potatoes from farm to table), done the old fashion way-- (not from a frozen bag)-- supporting other potato farmers--its a sign on the wall close to the grilling station of the potato pick of the week--as you chop down on each morsel-- you will forget the cost because your stomach will be well satisfied. You know, it is very expensive here, but the gentleman that waited on us upon arrival did a phenomenal job. We've been met with some edgy people this holiday season as people are scurrying to get things wrapped up, but Matthew L was absolutely the most pleasant person we've spoken with in months. He was thorough teaching us about the menu as we have never been here before, and accommodating with my "on the side" requests. Costly, but customer service is over the top! read more

This is an update to an update. Back in the pre-Covid days I wrote a complimentary review of the 5 Guys in Ames but then when the quarantine started and I had to rely on takeout and delivery, I had a terrible experience with delivery and wrote a one-star update (below). Recently, however, I heard from some people that their experiences with delivery were satisfactory, so about two or three weeks ago, after several months of boycotting the restaurant and almost against my better judgment, I gave 5 Guys another chance. I'm glad I did. My order came about 10 minutes late, which I thought was within normal parameters, so today I tried delivery again and this time the order came about 8 minutes early. So it does seem that my bad experience may have been an aberration rather than the norm, and I consider 5G to have redeemed themselves as far as delivery is concerned. The fries aren't real hot when they arrive, but five minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven cure that problem. The prices remain a bit steep, but the quality of the burgers and fries is excellent. And the delivery is free, which is an attractive feature, although of course the decent thing to do is to leave a tip. read more

Wow! just got 5 Guys for the first time ever. four burgers, one French fry, one soda and one shake was over $70.00!! for four people! The fries were soggy with grease and the Coke was completely flat. the burgers were good, but for $70!? nope! read more

Ate here tonight and was very disappointed!!! My hotdog was so smothered with ketchup and mustard that the bun was completely soaked and inedible. The fries were to salty to eat. But most of all two hotdogs, one fry and one small drink was $20! Ridiculous. read more

I must've went when all the responsible people were on break. Besides the music being so loud I couldn't hear the cashier without leaning in, I only saw 3 people actually working. One grill tender, one at the dressing station, and the big guy in back doing prep. The rest of them were leaning and talking behind the counter. First time going in Iowa, loved the ones I've went to in Texas and along the coast. I'll give it another shot eventually but you ruined a first impression. read more

This place is terribly overrated. Everyone I talked to said that Five Guys was great. They all recommended it. I'm not sure if I went on a bad night or if they ate at a different location, but I didn't find much that I liked about it. I'm sorry, but how in the world can a place like this justify selling a basic burger, fries and a soft drink for $18+? Seriously, it's not a lot better than a burger I'd get from a place like B-Bop's and I can get two of their burgers for $12 and they're worth it. Selling items "a-la carte" here does not work. A basic burger is at least $12 then if you want anything at all added they charge you more. If I were getting a really good burger and fries here I could see paying that amount, but this wasn't even that good. Burger was undercooked. This place was filled with college students the day we were there (it was in February)... I'm curious to know how many college kids can afford to pay those prices for a basic burger and fries? Crazy. Overall, not happy with my visit and I won't recommend this place to anyone. Very overpriced and the burger was made incorrectly. Won't be back. read more

We ordered on line on our way home from Des Moines, Selected a pick up time, order went through on my CC. We got to the restaurant our order was not there. A very nice manager looked at my order # and immediately tried to find the order. He offered us a free shake while he figured it out! We got our order and he could not have been nicer! I ordered the Grilled Cheese just to see what a $5.00 plus grilled sandwich looked like. I was disappointed it was smaller than a 13 years olds hand and I'm 60. The shake was another joke on top of sandwich. I will never go back. It is over priced and in my opinion very over rated. I don't antipate it being in Ames to long. read more
