I was initially hesitant to send it back thinking I could eat it but the more I cut into it the more rare it was. I decided to have it sent back. Our server stopped by after picking dirty plates up on a tray from another table & stuck my steak to be re-heated on the same tray. The server also forgot a peach drink that my fiancé ordered. Overall not a great experience. Even less impressed that the manager whom I talked to on the way out didn't really do much. Just had some of the BEST food and service we have ever had here. My husband, 2 year old and I were seated right away. We ordered my son's meal with our drinks. It showed up within 3 minutes of us placing the order. We only had to wait about 5 minutes between placing our meals and receiving my salad! Wife and I got some free entree coupons on Veterans Day and decided to utilize those. We got bread and drinks right away, then got a cactus blossom for an app. I don't know if they've gotten bigger or I've started eating less than I did in my 20s but good lord we were getting full after eating like a quarter of that thing. My wife got the 6oz sirloin with corn and a side salad. She a freak and cuts her sirloin and dumps her corn and steak into her salad...no dressing. I (normal) got the chicken fried steak with cream gravy and I added mushrooms and onions. I got to remember that the mushrooms are canned and not worth adding, but they ask me and I say yes every time. I got mashed potatoes and gravy and a Caesar salad for my sides. Pretty good there. Service was solid and very attentive for as busy as the bar was and where we were sitting. It ended up being about $16 with tip after our coupons and we took most of our food home. Can we give 0 stars? Overall, it was a very bad experience that even the Manager on duty didn't fix it right. My husband and I regret not taking pictures for proof. The service was mediocre at best. We asked about the 2-person Valentine's Day Special that was good through today. She didn't know if they still had that special or what it was, and we stated we didn't know what it was because there was no description or pictures. All we saw was they had a Special from February 9-18 for $48.95 give/take. She said she'd speak with her manager to see if they still had it. She eventually returned with our drinks and asked if we were ready to order. We reminded her we inquired about the Special. She told us we would have to choose from 1 of the 2 items on the list. We again stated we didn't see a list, so we did not know what the Special was. She appeared flustered and again said she'd have to go talk to her manager. She finally returned an official menu insert. Finally, we got to place our orders! My husband's steak was just okay. The side of chili was barely warm and didn't taste right, very blah. (Yes, we've both eaten at other locations in the past, so this shouldn't be extremely different than other franchise locations.) I ordered a 6 oz New York Strip to be cooked medium with sautéed onions and mushrooms. Sides of loaded steak fries and loaded mashed potatoes. The first thing I noticed was a large portion of the mushrooms were far beyond sautéed. They were as black as a black olive; no way was I going to eat those! The cheese on the fries had obviously been sitting under a lamp for 5-10 minutes before being served. It was hard and crusty looking - not appetizing AT ALL. My loaded mashed potatoes were also kind of meh looking. We notified our server, Jade J., who brought out a cup of different mushrooms, yet they also looked pretty dark, close to black on 1 side of many of these in the cup. So my husband quietly found a manager who agreed the original mushrooms were not correct. He offered to get different mushrooms and fresh fries but no resolution for my potatoes. The fries that eventually came out were an improvement but were EXTREMELY salty in taste, I eventually just couldn't eat anymore of them. The steak I ate while I was waiting for my other food had obviously been on a grill that was too hit because it was crispy charred on the outside and more medium rare than medium on the inside. I did eat the potatoes, though they were barely warm partly due to time wasted to try to get resolutions. In the meantime, Jade J. kept letting my drink go empty, and this continued until we left. The manager returned about the mushrooms and told us he spoke with the chef, who agreed the first mushrooms were wrong, but the cup of mushrooms were how they are always served. We did not and do not agree with this. However, he did offer to have the price removed from our ticket for the mushrooms. We do not believe his story because, as a manager, he should 1st know what looks correct without even discussing it with his chef. I've also searched pictures online of other sautéed mushrooms from other Texas Roadhouse locations, and they looked nothing like these blackened and charred pieces of destroyed fungi. We both feel the Manager failed in his duty to try to make or fix things right. We should've had an honest and sincere apology asking to remake our meals correctly because now things that were supposed to go with stuff is just piece fed...not a way you want to impress us to return. He could've also offered to comp us 25 or 50% for today and/or given a gift card to return... Stating I am so very sorry for these errors today, I will be working with my staff to fix them for the benefit of our future customers and I'd also like to give you a $20 gift card to return and try us again. Texas Roadhouse is not a cheap restaurant to go to, and customers should be valued better than what we were today. It has now been 5.5 hrs since finishing my meal and I still feel things were not dealt with professionally. read more

I search Yelp just to see if a TRH is near by my hotel and luck had it in the cards for me, 20 miles from hotel, 10 miles from my work site location, a TRH was found! Guess where dinner plans got moved real quick!? Got 1 of my 2 usual orders, double chop or the 16 oz sirloin steak, topped with mushroom and onions with a plain sweet tater and baked tater. This time it was the prior and as always is the case, delivered on all levels! I got this one for take out so I could get to hotel after a long day at work site. Upon arrival I was going to sit and get a drink while I had a 5 min break from my kids and an excuse to be gone. I didn't have my ID only had Iowa mobile ID very nicely asked just to have the manager come out and go out of her way TO BE A SNOB! Telling me I didn't look of age and I still just said ok do you know if they plan on getting it in the future and she went on this rant saying I was making the app up and it was to easy for me to edit and hack as if that's what I did THEN FORGOT HALF MY ORDER BECAUSE INSTEAD OF PAYING ATTENTION TO HER EMPLOYEES SHE WAS SO FOCUSED ON BEING A SNOB TO ME I FELT SO DISRESPECTED!!!!!! Some co-workers and I came over after we got done working yesterday for some supper. We work pretty close to the restaurant and always smell it while we are leaving work! I have never once had a bad experience until last night! I do realize you were busy but we also checked in on line. The parking is awful..... we had to park at another business. Not really a big deal. As we got our appetizer we had asked for some more rolls, then come our salads and not long after our meals. I order the same thing every time I am there 8oz Sirloin with the grilled shrimp loaded baked potato and salad. We asked for butter and more sour cream as our baked potatoes were very dry. I asked for my steak to be done with no pink, not burnt just done. It was pink! It got sent back. Still no sour cream, butter or rolls. By this time I was pretty much full, never got more butter or sour cream had to ask for the rolls again ask she never brought them. I took to bites of my steak and we asked for boxes as we were done. I have never once had to send my steak back there, they have always been how I like them. I also noticed that the waiters do a line dance and ones bringing out food have to stand and wait while they do the line dance. Texas Roadhouse salads and ribeyes are consistently good. We had a 16oz ribeye we split with two salads. Good as usual. We added the grilled shrimp which were over cooked, dry and cold. Upsetting. Service by Emma was atrocious. We sat at the bar and yet could never get the waitress to look our way. She spent her time focused on one gentleman that may have been a regular. We asked a passing waitress about our salads. We asked the runner who was delivering our food for our rolls that we never got. Waited forever to get her attention so we could get our check. I am not a big fan of chain restaurants like this but it was my sons girlfriends birthday so she picked going here. Overall I wasn't impressed with the food. My son's girlfriend got pulled pork and it looked like roast beef because it was a tad over cooked. I got the catfish fillets and for some reason roadhouse does not carry any hot sauce besides Tabasco and I know most places that serve fish have either Louisiana hot sauce or something similar to that so it really did mess up the meal. I had it for lunch the following day with my Louisiana hot sauce and it was much better. Y'all know the best part of the meal is the rolls anyway. They have the softest dinner rolls I've ever had. It's never ending. They seat you w the bread and butter, then they keep refilling it. Their waiting area has barrels of peanuts. And they hand you a bucket of it at the table. This is all before you order appetizers. It's insane the amount of unlimited food they give you before you even order anything. But when you do start ordering, I recommend their rattlesnake bites for your appetizer. There isn't any rattlesnake bits but a whole lotta melted cheese and jalapeño bits. I've tried a few things on the menu, like their herb chicken, steak kabobs, ribs, etc. And they've all tasted decent, definitely large portions plus sides. I think my favorite would be their pulled pork. Whenever I think about Texas Roadhouse, I think about the massive amount of food you can get and their amazing customer service. The staff at the Ames location has always been super friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend this place if you're with a group who can get hangry before the entrees arrive. For being packed out the door, we only had to wait for 25 mins to get a table of 3 seated. The waitresses were super nice and got us bread and drinks very quickly! Food also came out relatively quickly, probably 15-20 mins. I had the sirloin steak with mashed potatoes and also had the potato skin sliders and everything was superbly bussing! The hostess stand was horrible the two young ladies were rude and condescending. They have a difficult job and that is understood. The evening was looking like a horrible experience until we had Emily as our server. She was amazing and did a great job. She was attentive and customer focused. It was my first time in a Texas Roadhouse and it was about what I expected. Its got all the expected western decor and both kinds of music ( Country and Western). There are a big bucket of peanuts in the shell on the table and some hot rolls that were given to us almost immediately. The shells were obviously all over the floor which was kinda expected so no big deal. The menu is gigantic and full of burgers, steaks, ribs, just about everything you can imagine. I'm always suspicious of menus that have too many things on them, my theory being that they can't do ALL of that stuff well. I immediately looked for a chicken fried steak as its one of my all time favorite things and they had a chicken fried sirloin on the menu with the required cream gravy. I had to have it. They were really busy and it was about 6pm on a Friday evening, yet the food came out quickly. The chicken fried sirloin was actually really good. The meat was tender (there was a little piece of gristle) and the potatoes were good. For $10.99 it was a good value. The only downside for me other than the noise was the peanut shell all over the place. Yeah, I know that happens, but they were everywhere else as well including on my plate. I'd give it another try as I actually like the food. The ambience is a thing I'm going to need to be in the mood for. read more

Lots of noise here. Be aware if you're looking for a nice quiet dinner this is not it. The country music cranked and it being a Friday eve the place was hopping. Lots of families- babies- birthday shout outs by staff, etc.! One thing I knew they do well is get the food out fairly quickly-- starting with warm rolls the second you sit down they are melt in your mouth and served with a cinnamon butter. Also peanuts! Yum! Yup! If you have allergies- again not the place for you! I ordered a salmon dinner (small portion) with onions and a choice of 2 sides, salad and baked potato. Our service was average, I had to remind her of our beers and was trying to be patient except when the people who came in 10 minutes after us and got their drinks before us. I didn't like the crowded feel and maybe we were just at a table in a high traffic area but we had servers hovering behind us. My parents like coming here and when I'm in town, you may find me here. Otherwise, this popular chain is not on my radar, either at home or on the road. I've been here 3 or 4 times with Mom and Dad, who usually have some sort of coupon deal. The place has always been busy (but not Hickory Park crazy) and filled with lots of happy people and heaping plates of food. It's the perfect Midwest combination - lots of food for a reasonable price. We always get a booth, which allows us some privacy. Service has always been prompt and friendly, and I appreciated the extra attention my elderly folks receive. As for food, I pick something on the healthy side, avoiding anything that is deep fried, breaded, or otherwise could be identified as a calorie bomb. The menu is extensive, so it does take awhile to sort things out. The beer selection tends towards mainstream, so if you want a unique craft brew you won't find it here. read more

Native Texan that moved to Iowa almost 5 years ago. My wife received a birthday coupon for a free appetizer, so we decided to finally try them out. Corporate needs to change the name. This is nowhere close to Texas food. It was so bad, we couldn't even finish it. We ordered the Cactus Blossom, a blooming onion and it was actually done really well, we loved it. We ordered a sidekick rib and it came covered in bbq sauce - that's a bad sign. Bbq doesn't need sauce. It was bland, so plain. No seasoning on it at all. The chain's steak sauce on the table was nothing to write home either. We also ordered the 6oz sirloin dinner and oh my god, how do you screw up meat and potatoes? They did. The side of fresh vegetables was fair, just steamed vegetables, but the sirloin was well done even though we asked for medium well, there was gristle, and it wasn't seasoned well. The side of steak potatoes was not evenly seasoned - some were oversalted and others weren't. As someone who worked in the restaurant industry, I didn't have the heart to be honest with the manager when he checked on us. The decor was cheesy, not remotely Texan. Fake cacti literally everywhere? Metal buckets for ice and beer filled with napkins? Hot fresh dinner rolls nonstop were nice. Not a fan of the sweet butter that came with them, but love that they have staff just for the rolls. And to top it all off, the server was mediocre at best. read more

We have been patrons of Texas Roadhouse for years. Today was a 3rd attempt to try again for better service. Drove 40 mins & they were challenged to seat us at 3:40 in the afternoon. They had plenty of open tables, wanted the few eating there all jammed in one corner. I came to have dinner with my husband, not everyone else. Rolls were over baked, and we decided it wasn't worth staying. Previous visit the kitchen lost our order. Service manager gal finally brought our food, no sorry, no coupon, no dessert, nothing. Another visit the 2 of us were sat way back in a corner, so hot & uncomfortable, we had to shimmy & remove a chair out of the way & excuse ourselves in front of another booth of four. I'm done. The manager at this location, Jordan Kim, provided us with the worst manager/customer interaction I've ever had. Today (5/27/2024) our party of 8 went for dinner and unfortunately a piece of chicken came out that was inedible, so we sent it back. The new piece took the entire rest of the meal to show up and everyone was done with their meals. When Jordan (the manager) dropped the food back off and asked what was wrong with the last piece, we were met with arguing over the food that was sent back and an undertone of accusation we were wrong. When the bill came, we were surprised to see the chicken that took forever to be remade on the bill. The manager was brought back over and again argued. She stated that "everything that leaves the kitchen needs to be paid for or it is theft of goods!" And mentioned some BS about "company policy". I'm sorry but no goods happened here. After she fought with my grandmother, she offered a discount and we were met with the most anger inducing grin I've ever seen, acting like she pulled one over and "won". The "updated" bill came back and the discount was $5!! How insulting! Needless to say, we won't be back and Jordan Kim needs to be forced into a new career, hopefully not one in customer service because clearly she doesn't know how to do that. After 40 minutes we checked with the lady calling people back. She lost our reservation and told us we would have to wait longer. I told them no and they need to get us in. I was definitely satisfied with the fall off the bone ribs I ordered; they truly did fall off the bone. It impressed me that they didn't overload the ribs with sauce to overcompensate for the flavor of the meat; anyways, the meat had pretty decent flavor for a franchise restaurant: tender and smoky. I also have to say that I received pretty outstanding service, despite most of the other comments I've read. Rolls were promptly delivered when requested, and our waitress was very personable. I would recommend this place and will probably be back sometime. read more

I've been to this place many times in Ames and never been disappointed. Eaten everything from steaks to salads, and it's darn good every time. They always start out with rolls and we ALWAYS ask to take a box home- thats a pro tip. This time I ordered the steak tips and gravy- served with onions and mushrooms- it was quite good. This was the first time I've had their brown gravy and it is better than the white gravy. I am going to order that again. We really enjoy their drinks too- margarita with sangria in it is an excellent choice and we recommend that. All n all, I'd come back and eat here again 1000 times over. read more

It's an okay place. The parking lot has been beyond filled almost every night since the place was built, so I figured it was about time to figure out what the big deal was. I went with a friend. The place definitely has "atmosphere" down, and they definitely have "big spaces" down. This place was built with the expectation that it would be packed every night. It's HUGE - much bigger than most of the restaurants in town. I've never been inside Hickory Park, but that's the only restaurant that can rival the size of this one, I think. The atmosphere is very "redneck". There are peanut shells all over the floor and it's decorated in a very cowboy/redneck type of decor. Totally up to you if that's your thing. We went around 9:30 expecting that most of the dinner rush would be gone. Nope. We WERE seated instantly, which was nice, but the place was insanely loud. As-in, we couldn't hear each other when seated across the table. Would be a great place if you didn't want to actually hear what your date was saying, but in this case, I did. No complaints about the music loudness (as other people have complained). I couldn't even hear the music over all of the people. When we left around 10:30-ish, the noise had died down quite a bit. It was still loud, but at least we could hear one another. The food was okay. It's not something I would go back and eat again. It reminded me of home-style cooking, so that's definitely a positive. The steak he ordered wasn't cooked as he ordered it, but he still said it was good. My burger and fries was okay, but it wasn't anything that blew me away. Price was okay for all of it. Overall, I really wouldn't go back unless my friends were begging me AND it was nowhere near peak hours. The food was okay, but the loudness made it completely unenjoyable to me. If you're a social butterfly who loves the loudness and "being packed" feeling of full restaurants, though, you might end up liking this one. I'd rather have a pretty quiet night with a very attentive waitress at some of the other places in town. read more

This place is awesome. I recommend going there early if you do not want to wait. If you plan on having a late meal, I recommend taking part in the call ahead seating "there way of taking reservations, but it is not a true reservation." I always get the sirloin steak. I recommend ordering it medium rare or rare and with sautéed onions. Recently I had that with buttered corn and mashed potatoes with creamed gravy. The meal was absolutely delicious. Their drink menu is fairly extensive. For awhile they were the only place in town that served Batch 19 beer(pre-prohibition era beer). I highly recommend this beer. Their margaritas are one of the best in town. I recommend the Patron or 1800 kicker! This place can get fairly loud during their peak hours, but I don't mind. This is the ONLY place I have ever had a manager every single time we come, ask us how our food and experience is. I have never had a problem with any of the waitresses! read more
