I am an in and out person but decided to try fives with the kids the other day. It seemed pretty clean and the guy taking our order was nice and helpful since it was our first time. I think the only good thing about them is the free unlimited tops ( which I love) ! We got 3 of the classic combo for $13.99 which came out to $47 , if they didn't have this deal I would not come at all but definitely a lot of fries and the burger was good. The kids got a kick of being able to get the peanuts for free ! I haven't physically gone into Five Guys in over 10yrs and thought it was okay, at that time felt their burgers were under-seasoned and dry so I just never took the time to return. Fast forward to spring break weekend we took our kids to Kids Empire and decided to have lunch here. Looking at the menu didn't realize it was al a carte. They did offer a classic combo (little cheeseburger, little fry and classic drink) which we ordered for our 3 yo, honestly such a good deal! My husband and I both got a cheeseburger and regular Cajun fries with an Oreo crème milk shake. Mariah was the one who took our order and she was so patient, since we haven't be there in a long while she took the time to explain and answered our questions because we had no clue that a cheeseburger came with 2 patties. Toppings (All the way) free of charge but certain ones were extra. Our food came out quick, hot and fresh. The burgers were so delicious the beef patty had so much flavor and it was juicy. The fries were fresh and they dropped extra in the bag. The Oreo crème shake tasted like a regular vanilla no Oreo flavor. Self serve drinking station and condiments. The resturant is clean. Apparently, when it's 105 out, that's a GOOD time to hit this location. The parking lot wasn't full with prime spots in the shade sitting empty. Since I hate crowds, SCORE! I am on this lame but effective 'once a month' self-imposed eating plan and it's working. I threw the gauntlet down on crappie things I was eating that I know we're not good for me (can't control). Instead of telling myself I could never have them (ridiculous and undercutting myself), I told myself I could have them once a month, but no more. When that time came, whatever that thing was, it would become unrestricted. And so I rolled... And it's worked amazingly well. In fact, I was surprised to discover that I cared about those things less than less. And that was true of this visit. So, I wanted to mix it up and a large fry here was on the rotation. I hit this place a few times a year but not more. The restaurant was virtually empty. The temperature was very nice with a constant strong blast of cold air coming from every vent. Almost excessive. There was nobody in front of me and nobody behind me. Not one person was in the restaurant other than myself. There was no way I was going to eat a burger with this large fry. The large fry here alone is 1400 cal! Can you imagine what throwing a burger on top of that would be (kinda the overall problem with fast food)? Sure you could do a small burger and a small fry, but I was sticking to my program and it was Fry-day!! I thought it was rather silly that the girl who took my order and expedited it kept calling out 'number 31' when I was the only one in the restaurant. Instead of just looking over at me and saying my order was ready, she stood behind the counter looking straight ahead repeatedly calling the number. Seemed a bit rigid...robotic.. The fries themselves were just exactly what you would expect and I'm glad I scratched the itch. The ketchup tasted repulsive, too sweet and too salty. Other than fruit, I am not used to things that are sweetened and I've reduced sodium out of my diet which makes everything more sensitive. Good, 'cause I don't really want to eat this stuff more often! It was kind of harsh hits. lol The degree of a offense lessened after a few bites (like other poisons seemed to).. And so with the loud disco music playing, I began the well worn hand to mouth coordination dance ensuring that each thing before me would make it into my mouth. Having mastered this skill early on, It did. Having fries is not an issue, it's the frequency, how often do I was having them. I've used this orginal system with other things (crap things with no nutrition value/fiber) and it's working the exact same way. I'm caring less and less about the things I used to value. Just because I can, doesn't mean I should... And so this cycle is over, reaffirming that most often 'the joy in the wanting and less in the getting.' More than enough, always there but only once a month IF I want them.... When I swing back for one of their $15 burgers someday, I will skip the fries. He wasn't certain when I asked for hot sauce, but the manger was great and took over helping. Hot sauce will be on the side. Very nice inside. All the red and white square decor. Music playing inside. Paid for the order and wished a good day! Waited a bit. Got some peanuts. It gets better! The manager said toppings are free and I could add jalapeños. What? Seriously? Already had my order ready and complete, but was happy to give jalapeños on the side. Yes! Received along with a thank you! Lunchtime! It was REALLY DELICIOUS. Management is penny-pinching based on the way the employee was measuring out the fries; the cup the regular came in was the same as a small at any other I've been to. It seems there is a line to be drawn, those who prefer Five Guys and those who prefer In and Out. I have to side with In and Out. However, Five Guys does offer better food than your run of the mill fast food joint. For around $5 you are going to get a big ole burger that comes with not one but two patties. Size wise I think you are getting a deal. One thing to note though, there are no combos at this place, so order wisely. Once you decide whether you want a regular burger (which means two patties) or a small burger (which means one patty), you have to decide the toppings and cheese. I decided to have "everything" which meant = mustard, ketchup, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms but I left the cheese off. Now say you don't like all those items...well, be rest assured there are additional items like jalapenos, chili's and other items that you can pick and choose from. Next thing to decide..how do you want your fries? You can get a small cup or a large cup. I highly recommend the small cup because I swear to god, that it came with enough fries to feed 4 people! Yes, the small is indeed large and I can only image that the large could feed an army! In addition to size you can choose whether you want your fries regular or spicy. We went with regular. The Five Guys fries are thick. No shoe string here. They are also made direct from the potato hence the thickness. Of course, I tried the fries first which were good but not super fabulous in my book. Need a bit more seasoning to make the super fabulous rating. The burger came wrapped in aluminum foil and upon unwrapping I saw a burger that looked like it could be in one of those TV commercials. It looked plump, bright and beautiful. I was very excited to bite into it. I was hoping the thing would knock my socks off after all, you couldn't help but miss all the awards and adulation's and not to mention, the Zagat rated sign, on the walls of the restaurant. But despite the sign that said "The burger stops here," I would have to disagree in this burger beating the In and Out burger. The thing lacking in my opinion, is the cravable factor. See, I crave In and Out burgers. There is some kind of unique crack in them that makes me think about their burger and which keeps me coming back for more. While this was a good burger it missed that certain quality that would keep me thinking about that burger in the middle of the night. In fact, thinking about a burger in the middle of the night belongs to my favorite burger of all time (the Juicy Burger in Hollywood). Burger and fries aside, the coolest thing about Five Guys was the 4 flavor ice tea machine. I had never seen on of those machines before. Basically you push the button of the flavor of the kind you want and walla you get your tea squirted out to you in your glass. I guess I was amazed because a) I love ice tea and b) I hardly ever get 4 choices of tea. Anyhow, Five Guys, it was fun to visit you but you are not in my top tier of burgers. I tried this place when they first opened. I was definitely not impressed. This is my second time back since then. Definitely some improvement on their burgers. They taste just like home made burgers. They don't taste frozen and the seasoning and all the stuff I added to the burger was very good. I got the little bacon cheeseburger. Which was a bit small since I got it lettuce wrapped. So I was still hungry. It was kind of hard to eat as a lettuce wrap. I had to use a knife and fork. So, I don't recommend it getting lettuce wrapped. Everything fell out as soon I held it up to eat. It's a bit pricey. My burger was a little more than $8.00. For about 2 dollars more I could have gotten 2 patties instead of one. I was snacking on peanuts while waiting for my family to finish their food. Which I'm not sure I should have. I don't know how clean their box of peanuts were. Well, I don't feel sick so I think I'm ok. Andrew was the one that greeted us and took our order. Titanic is playing at the Edwards Theater for its 25th anniversary. While I'm not in the mood to rewatch James Cameron's 1997 classic, I might as well to pass the time waiting for my milkshake. I'm nearing the one hour mark... I can't blame the workers. They are all so kind and they're working their asses off. What can you really expect when an order of fries and a shake costs 16 dollars when they're hiring at a measly 15 dollars an hour. This country has gone to shit, but the workers are not to blame. Picture this, You walk into an unknown burger joint, not knowing what the hell to expect. You navigate the menu and then try ordering, completely unaware of how their ordering process works... The overly chipper lady hands you a menu, allowing you to choose from all the unlimited gimmicky fixin's you want (free of charge). You say to yourself, "Yeah! Now I'm justifying the high price I'm paying for this thing!" You're there waiting, the anticipation starts to build as you smell those fresh aromas coming from the burgers on the grill, and you begin to salivate just thinking about how good that beef will taste in your mouth.... And then.... You take your first bite. You find yourself in fatty heaven. The burger is juicy, charbroiled, and well seasoned. The lettuce is crisp, and the bun is toasted. Keeping that shit all together. Sounds good right? Well that won't happen here. Not by a LONG shot. This is one of the shittiest things I've tasted in quite a while. I think the last horrible thing I ordered was from Tower Dogs, and we all know how that ended. Now let's examine everything that is wrong with this sad little burger. First of all, I ordered the regular cheeseburger...expecting it to be, well.....regular. What I got was a huge double cheeseburger that looked like a complete unappetizing mess! I don't know if that's how it comes with two patties, or if they just got my order wrong, but I ended up scraping off the extra layer of meat and tossing it in the trash. This was of course, after having had to excavate my burger...out of the bag to free it from the mountain of Cajun fries it was under. The meat was totally bland and a bit undercooked. The bun however, is what gave me the most hassle. Each time I gripped my burger, there'd be pieces of the bun stuck on my fingertips GROSS. By the time I ate half of it, my cheeseburger looked totally unrecognizable, as if a two year old went ape shit on it. I threw the rest of it away, as well as the bucket of fries that they give you. Now I don't know how the regular fries taste, since I'll never be back here to try them. All I know is, the Cajun fries were absolutely disgusting, and smelled of urine. It tasted like someone deep fried some cardboard and threw gobs of spices on it to cover it up. The burger was not worth the $6 price tag alone, and is beyond overpriced for the piece of inedible crap that they give you. Their gimmick is 100% real beef, no fillers, all the toppings you want and have some peanuts yada yada, but that doesn't automatically equate to the food being BETTER! The people that gave this place 5 stars are probably the same people who think Subway has the best sandwiches in town. It's pretty cool that you can get some free peanuts while you wait for your order. Must be a southern thing. Fries are hot and tasty. They are cut here fresh and have the skins on them. The burgers are huge, juicy and messy. The regular burger is a double. If you want a single get the small. Toppings are over the top and they are all free. Mushrooms grilled onions etc. There is also a second topping menu that has peppers, hot sauce, BBQ sauce etc. Again all free. Comparisons will be made all the time against In & Out and the Habit. Looking from the outside, I was not terribly impressed with the look of this Burger Joint. The lettering made me feel like I was walking into a Payless Shoe Store. The smell is what enticed me to give it a try. If they have great food, then heck, they can be serving out of a truck for all I care! ...okay, maybe not out of a truck. This Obama-made-famous burger joint is a fun place to go with a good, upbeat atmosphere. I ordered the little bacon cheeseburger and Five Guys style fries while my husband had a bacon cheeseburger (two patties) with the Cajun Fries. Toppings are free which include traditional and non-traditional options such as grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, barbecue sauce, hot sauce and jalapenos. Overall the burger was really good, in my opinion the taste was better than In-N-Out. Makes sense why it just won Zagat's 2010 Best Burger for fast food. The bun was surprisingly one of my favorite parts, very soft and yummy- much better than In-N-Out's dry, airy bun. The cheese was also really good, even though it was just American. As far as fries, I liked the original better than the Cajun. The seasoning tasted a bit off. My husband was happy to see "Mellow Yellow" in the fountain drink lineup. Overall, I would recommend trying the place. The one drawback is the prices- you can't compete with In-N-Out's prices. Five Guy's burgers alone range from about $4 - 6.50. Probably the best Burger joint in Fresno, since we don't have Ruby Tuesday. The thick patty is easily the best tasting meat of the fast food joints we have out here. They also give you the option to add jalapenos, Grill onions or whatever toppings to your preference. Their Cajun fries is the best and easily blows away In and Out, while the Dog house grill skinny fries being a close tie. When it comes to hamburgers everyone in Fresno pretty much makes them similar, with only the meat making them distinct from one another.
