Firstly, I HATE the decor, ambiance and look and feel of Five Guys. I see kinda what they're tying to do with it, it's got a super homogenised, clean and generic 1950's US diner vibe... which grates with me so much (with the exception of the articles on the wall which describes their success to date across America) - because actually, the product they're selling is AMAZING. Best burger I've ever had? It's up there let me tell you (though that honour remains with Patty & Bun)! What I really liked about Five Guys was the way that burgers could be customised, and how while it looks like fast food (but isn't priced like fast food), each burger is made specifically for the person ordering it. And that burger comprises a truly succulent, tasty patty, an amazing bun, fantastic bacon (should you want bacon) and, grilled onions? Yes please again if you want them. Anyway, it all came together into a burger that honestly, WOW. The list of items you can add to your burger was probably 15 or 16 long, the combinations must be immense! And that was accompanied by fries that I would say are the best fries I've ever had. And the nice touch on the wall where they tell you where the potatoes come from was not lost on me. Five Guys. In some cases you should definitely read the Yelp reviews before going into a restaurant. This was one of those situations. Had I read Tristan's review, I would've ordered a Little burger. Not the regular one I got... with cheese... and mushrooms. So my initial impressions of this place are that I hate the branding. I hate the red and white faux diner style. It's tacky and not in any way authentic. And then the prices. Holy shit. I paid 13.75 for a fast food burger, small fries and a soda. WTF?! Not cool. We went down to the basement to grab some seats. Lovely or not. It felt like a tarted-up McDonald's, except with no cheap prices and fun toys. I was already thinking I hated the place but the burger converted me a little. It was the first time I've ever got to pick the condiments I wanted and mushrooms. At Byron, you can pick the cheese you want but it still doesn't feel as customizable. Jesus, though, the burger was huge*. I finished it but it was a struggle and the stomach ache after was unwelcome. The fries were downright awful. The fun 'choose your own adventure' soda machine was a nice touch. I am not sure I would go back, I think I would but only for the burger. Tried 5 guys in the US. Wasnt impressed there, except for the price - lower than others. Here in London, it tested better - might be the uk meat quality. In any case - Byron remains the best. Better taste for the meat and te bun. Here at 5 guys u get more the north american taste and feel obvously - the buger is big and fullfilling, good, but i could taste the aluminium wrap when having the burger. Totally unnecesary waste, aluminium wrap even if u are eating inside. Puts me. Same goes for all other containers, forks, knives, all disposavel plastic. Fries were good. The place is clean, bright, the staff are friendly and the music is good. Daaaaamn daaaaamn DAAAAAYUUUUM! What can you say about Five Guys? The burgers. Oh the burgers! Fresh, cooked and seasoned to perfection. As many toppings and sauces as you like. Yes, they are on the dear side but not unreasonably so. A standard (two patty) cheeseburger is around £8 and my god you will be satisfied. I usually go for a little bacon cheeseburger because...... The fries! NEVER order a large, unless you are feeding the whole family. Seriously, regular is more than enough, these Five Guys guys are very generous with the portions. They scoop the fries into a cup, put it in a bag then throw even more fries in. Cajun fries are the best but the normal ones are fine too. Save room for soda! Five Guys has Coca Cola Freestyle machines - serving a huge range of different flavours of Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Dr Pepper etc. It's a great novelty and you can refill as many times as you want (or can manage before bursting). I loved the Cherry Vanilla Coke. The restaurant itself is clean, bright and functional. No frills, no table service but perfect for what it needs to be. A place to grab a quick, tasty bite perhaps before the cinema or a night out. Usually has great classic rock n roll music on too which is a big plus for me. I love history, don't you? Five Guys has a rather interesting place in food history - it's a family run endeavour by five members of the the Rothschild family in the years following on from The Great Incident. Not only that, in its first two years of business, they enacted a "Five Guys Only" policy in that social scientists at the time believed that putting more than 5 men into a small space had a 65 % chance of breaking out into bloody combat. However, in 1963 this policy was repealed as the restaurant was losing business to the fast-growing Mack & Donald's Ham-Burger Co. which, of course, is better known today as the ubiquitous franchise Burger King. Fast forward to 2013, and Five Guys set out to conquer the UK with its famous burgers, fried potatoes, and fluoridated water. I hope I've taught you all something today. My overall impression is that if Five Guys had opened here 4 years ago, this'd be a very different review. For me, the place sits in a weird twilight zone of burger places - it's not particularly cheap (I'll come to this in a bit) even if it does look like a slightly cleaner McDs, the burger quality is ok, but nowhere near the Honests and Pattys of this world, and, unlike Tommi's, there's no bearnaise sauce. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long for my burger in Angel, but the Covent Garden one fills up pretty comprehensively. Sidling up to the counter, I discovered that burgers don't come with chips. Ok. Then...little or normal sized? Assuming little was a slider I went for a normal bacon cheeseburger. The burger topping choices induced a pretty substantial option paralysis for me, so I blurted out a few items that came to mind and was done with it. I figured I should not carb overload as I am wont to do so ended up with a little cajun chips. £11.50? What? But it looks like McDonald's! Ok. And I don't even get a hugely sugary beverage with that. I mean, £2.50 will get you a 512 oz kid's sized soda in Pawnee. Anyway, turns out I could've ordered little everything (the minimum for a burger and chips here is £7.50 in case you're wondering). The burger (+ grilled onions and green peppers and jalapenos and ketchup, yes, I was flustered) was pretty substantial and I had chips overflowing from the tiny bear-fez-sized paper cup. When you serve a well done burger, it's always going to set the ceiling at decent. I mean, it's not a bad burger. It's better than any of the fast food chains, but...as it's well done, it's not a juicy mess and it's not designed to be a total slopfest (I'm looking at you Lucky Chip). The flavours are ok - nothing world beating. Again, in this price range I much prefer Tommi's. The cajun chips treated me well, decent flavour although a quarter of them sogged out a bit (not horribly so, but enough to notice). They're good and plentiful although they fall short of the 'like crack' label. I mean, I wouldn't veto going back, but I'd much sooner go to any of the aforementioned places than here. I have to say there are a lot of positives and a lot of negatives about this fast food place. The burgers are very tasty, and the soda machines are fun, having lots of different flavours of your favourite beverages. The fries come from fresh GB potatoes which made a difference in flavour, as did the peanut oil they are fried in. And that can also be a negative as if you are allergic, you can forget ever eating at this place. Also, the seats were narrow, with an addition of basement seating which was not at all comfortable, making this place suitable only for takeout. I don't know if i agree with the limited options menu (no milkshakes, no salads) but that is up to you. Overall it has good portions and great taste. read more

I tend to not write many reviews on chains, but my recent experience at Five Guys was good enough to warrant some praise. After spending the morning at a work event nearby, I decided I should grab some lunch before I headed back to the office. My initial plan was to treat myself to a burrito, but when I saw Five Guys, I got a sudden hankering for a burger. What the heck..it was a Friday. When I walked in, there was a short line, but it moved pretty quickly. When I got to the front, the guy behind the cash register was super friendly, answered the couple questions I had with a smile, and didn't rush me. After ordering, I noticed that no one else was eating from the peanut bucket...it almost seemed like it was just decoration. I, however, dug right in...and sat down to eat my peanuts and wait for my number to be called. After a short wait, I got my Little Cheesburger(definitely big enough!), fries and my 2nd cup of Diet Dr Pepper( I know, I know..what's the point of Diet when I'm stuffing my face with a burger and fries...but it's habit). I had loaded the burger up with toppings, so it was pretty messy...but it was also pretty tasty! The fries were great too..even though I forgot to order the cajun fries..and free refills on the soda was a definite treat. To top it off, there was an empty table outside in the sunshine to sit at. Although slightly pricey, luckily I like lots of toppings which made me feel like I was getting better deal. And If I'd gone with a friend, there were more than enough fries in the regular portion to have shared(I ended up throwing half away as I was so full!). I've been wanting to go here since my mate Frankie. W noticed the coming soon signs and was reminiscing over his experience of them in USA. Well what can I say I was not let down the burgers are lovely and juicy freshly pressed together in front of your eyes. The burgers come in the size 'small burger' and 'burger' the first being a single patty the normal is two patties. I obviously opted for the double with bacon and cheese. Then you choose your toppings inside at no extra cost. What I would say it the burger would feel a lot more expensive if you had a plain one. I loaded mine with salad, onions, tomato, jalapeños, pickles and two sauces and it was delicious. The chips are a bit expensive £4 for regular, but they are huge. Me and my friend shared a regular so not as bad as first thought. They are very nice fried in peanut oil which is a nice edition, they also rotate what potatoes they use regularly to give a little change. The drinks are refillable and there is a machine that gives you over 100+ drink choices, with all varieties of coke, Fanta, spite you will have heard of apart from my favourite cherry Dr pepper, (just my luck)! Overall the burger is not the best I've ever had, that is currently held by patty & bun. But it is up there with the best and has the advantage of quantity which is an important factor when you want to get a big munch on :-) read more

Decided to try out this second branch in Angel as there are no queues Have to say, it was great!! Great value for money, the small burger (one burger Patty,,) was a good deal at £5.50p. They have a range of toppings and you can have as many or as little as you like on your burger at no extra cost! The Cajun fries were great! real potato chips - good spice kick to them too! one portion is enough for 2 people, unless you are extremely starving! The soft drink (coke in every flavour imaginable) is a bit pricey at £2:50 but worth it if you are able to drink lots as it's a free refill. The normal burger has 2 meat patties and the small has one. They also have hot dogs and beer on the menu. If you are peckish, there are boxes of shelled peanuts that you can help yourself to - complementary too! Overall, I reckon it's good value for money. I reckon it's much better value than Shake Shack Tasty freshly made burgers, great fries and a good atmosphere. I will defo return soon! read more

The minute I cycled up the upper street way and saw that Five Guys sign, " I must have it now" it was calling me, I did check out Bryon across the road but I was called back to Five Guys based on something I've heard. I didn't know the process, and was expecting to see meal deals etc...but know I was surprised to see that you had to pay for everything individually. So obviously I picked the most expensive burger which was the Bacon cheeseburger at £8:75 with the choice of fee toppings and regular chips at £4:00 which you can have Cajun or non, which I went for the Cajun fries which on that day was from Holland. I like the fact that the drinks selection is wide and I chose Grapefruit Fanta still which is rare. I do like the fact the kitchen is open, while you wait you see what is going on,unlike other fast food chains. My order was up, and literally saw the guy add more chips to my regular...Wow at that price I should think so too. I sat downstair and found it very clean, red and white décor with all their rave reviews posted on the walls. Mann was I impressed, the burger was fresh, juicy and loaded and I had to take it in slowly, the fries well spiced and you could taste real potato. The last burger I had was in a pub, plus a popular food chain so I don't have many comparison right now, but for me it was super duper fly!! read more

Super fast service, just as I remembered it back in Maryland. Knowing full well how the ordering protocol works, ordering was a breeze. And unlike the Covent Garden branch in the first opening weeks, hot dogs here are actually available. We were very excited to go to Five Guys at Angel. I believe they've only been open for a few weeks. First impressions were strong. Though slightly cheesy 1908s American Hamburger chain. The decor was rather cheap tables, plastic chairs, sort of took me back to being a kid in McDonalds. The menu was just hamburg and fries, which is what we ordered. The burgers were great and amazing!! Full points!! The chips are a bit of a let down. I had a cheese burger which was £8.00. An average price for a burger in the area. I was there tonight (Sunday) and there would have been about 12 staff, all not very friendly. They weren't terrible or had bad customer services, they just seemed so caught-up in their part of the process of making the burger, or cleaning the tables or placing your meal on the table, I think they've forgotten the most important part....the customer. None of the staff seemed to be happy or were having a great time...if you go across the road to Bryon Hamburgs, the staff there are jumping about, joking around with the customers & would even do a little tap dance if you asked nicely (true story!). Overall Five Guys would be a great place to go with your group of mates after the pub or before a rock concert. After hearing so much about it, we finally managed to get to 5 Guys a while ago. It was busy and hard to find a seat for the three of us, but that's the standard in London by now. I very much enjoyed the quality of the meat. Really juicy, tasty and done well. You can also see them make the patties fresh in front of you so you're sure they don't come right out of a freezer. But the fact you can "have so many toppings" and "different combinations" is a bit of an overstatement and over-promise. It's just basic toppings such as a few different sauces, onions and veggies. Where is the uniqueness if that's your selling point of your burgers? Anyway, the burger was really good and big so I can't really complain. That's the reason I do like this place and give this 4 stars: great big juicy burgers. I wasn't a die-hard fan of their chips, but that has more to do with the fact that I'm a barbarian who prefers thin beef-cooked fries. I do appreciate their focus on fresh and local potatoes. And I know lots of people who go to 5 Guys just for their chips. I didn't mind the all-American interior of the place, only one thing: Please get rid off those review-quotes on the wall, it really feels like you're trying to sell a crappy movie to me by quoting journalists out of their context. read more

Five Guys is my favorite burger ever! So far I never tasted a burger than can beat Five Guys. In central London I prefer to go to Five Guys in Islington as its less crowded than Five Guys in Covent Garden and I found the food quality even better. It's a bit pricey compared with fast food burgers but its really worth it. You should always order small fries since they fill the bag with extra fries which makes the small fries at Five Guys like a large fries at other restaurants. read more

Wow, I never saw so many reviews disagreeing one with each other. That's why I want to enter the fray! So... first of all: I like the place, yes it's fake, yes it's bright and it has that nice hospital cantine flavor.... and who cares!? I still like it! I loved the fact that you can put whatever you want in the burger, it just seems "yours", even if they don't have that much choice... I mean, it's ok as you have more than 15 combinations and that make the total of possible burgers growing up to millions, but still.. I don't count as a combination "lettuce and mayo"! I want more things, different cheeses, more vegetables, just give me anything! Fries are really good (go for the cajun, not that spicy and TRULY good!) and free refill (yeah!)! Yes I'm sorry, but if I find free refill I don't go for one cup, I go for three at least! They are gonna pay the trust they put in me!! (Yes I know... My mom got me tested don't worry) It's a pity the burger is not what I actually call a burger: I mean, I like the high, juicy, pink/red inside burger, while this is very thin and large... Somebody like it, somebody don't, you choose! I hadn't heard the most favourable tidings from some friends regarding Five Guys - surely London's millionth burger restaurant - and after my own sojourn I can more or less see their grievances. "3 times the cost of McDonalds and not much better" is one I've heard a couple of times, this is a little harsh as the quality is certainly higher than Maccy D's but they were right about the cost/product ratio. It doesn't add up. £8 for their cheeseburger is a bit steep even if the patties are doubled up (singles are available too) the circumference was less than what I had hoped for. Having said that, the burger was actually nice. Another pro amongst these cons is that all the toppings (fillings) are free, these consist of numerous vegetables and sauces. The drinks cost £2.50 and you have to serve yourself but at least you can have free refills. Also, the chips aren't bad. Mostly quite fluffy in the middle and many still have the skin on the outside for a bit of extra flavour. The décor is a tad tacky, very American diner kitsch which was to be expected but that doesn't make it any easier on the eye. Also, the queueing system may require some tweaking. When an order is placed you are given an order number and directed to a waiting area for you meal to be prepared and handed over to you - much like an Argos. But with this comes some confusion as while I was standing around among wanting diners numbers were being called and unanswered and besides this we all just looked a touch scattered and unorganised. All things considered my visit to Five Guys was better than I had expected but I certainly wasn't wowed. For me there is a disparity between the food received and the price it comes at. This aside I could certainly go back although Five Guys wouldn't be my first choice when selecting a place to feed and probably not even my preferred fast food, burger restaurant. I'll keep this brief. Went there after a few beers and was with friends down Upper St. It's no Bleecker Burger. It's no Patty & Bun. It's not even Shakeshack. It's ok. I mean it's really messy. The unlimited toppings just make it insanely over the top. Maybe too much. The Coke machine is the best thing about this place. Great flavour combo's though the venue on Upper St is not my favourite. If you read the reviews they feel tr need to paste in every available wall, you'll notice that it's their fries that they're recently lauded for. £8.75 for two anaemic thin burger patties with god-knows-when-it-was-cooked bacon bits and onions that had only a brief encounter with the grill.... Byron is right across the road and better in EVERY way. £30 for a quick family lunch? I don't know if Americans actually like this crap or the reviews from reputable publications are from former glory days but I'd recommend you go to one of London's dozens of far better burger joints read more

It was a Friday night and myself and my girls were planning to drink and party the night away but first.....had to line those stomachs!!! It was 11pm and all the restaurants had closed so we had to find an alternative. I had previously walked into this Five Guys then swiftly walked out again when I saw the prices. £8 for a burger? No thanks! However we didn't have a choice this time. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with most of the choice of toppings that were available (pickles, mayo, grilled onions, tomatoes) and small fries. Sounds simple right? I was then pleasantly surprised. The burgers were big and juicy and far from a simple cheeseburger. The two beef patties they used (yes TWO) were juicy and cooked perfectly. The bun was fresh and soft and made the joy of every bite sooooo much better. Small fries? The portion size was EPIC to say the least. Oh maaaahhh gawd! I shared them with my friend and we both still barely finished them. The whole meal was absolutely worth what I paid. The staff were pleasant enough considering it was nearly midnight on a busy Friday and seating was not a problem. Must try the hotdog and cajun spiced fries next time.
