Looking for a great burger in Durham Region? Don't waste your time reading those arrogant snobs on certain other websites (whose moderators would probably delete this review), just go directly to Five Guys in Oshawa (it's near the Lowe's). Until this New Jersey import came along, the selection in Durham was weak at best. Lots of "meatloaf" style burgers (yuck), the over-rated New York Fries-owned called South St. Burger, etc (and don't get me started on Lick's...) Time for the Americans to take the local yokels to school. If you've never been, note that a regular hamburger or cheeseburger is a DOUBLE, while the little hamburger/cheeseburger is a SINGLE. Unlike a lot of other places out there, toppings are free at Five Guys (other than cheese or bacon). Grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers... too many places charge for these. Not here! Personally I like to order a cheeseburger and have it "all the way" plus jalapeno peppers. Perfect combination, but even with all those extras, the freshness and the flavour of the beef still comes through. Fries are amazing - they're cut in-house, never frozen, fried in peanut oil* and they always dump in more than you order. We ordered "regular" fries, there was a box with the fries in it, and as many fries that were in the box, scattered on the bottom of the bag. There's even a sign that tells you which farm the potatoes come from. * peanut allergy sufferers, don't bother. The food is great, but no doubt it's pricy. The toppings selection is fantastic and the fries are great. I usually get the cajun fries. Sometimes they're a little too cajun-y, but it's nothing a little ketchup won't fix! I enjoy the bright atmosphere with peanuts to munch on while you wait. It's hit or miss with the staff. Some of them know the menu well and are personable, some go deer-in-headlights on you when you ask a question. There are a lot of burger joints around to choose from that are equally as good(or better) with reasonable prices. read more

Made a second trip and still liked the burger although I can understand why some people didnt as it was "too messy" and too expensive. I also asked where their beef was from and was assured it was Canadian "Alberta Beef". (hope so) When I asked why they are using Potatoes from the USA I was told it was because they grow in a colder climate...ROFLMFAO..Are you kidding me? I think Canada has enough cold potato climate to grow spuds for fries. I imagine its because its part of their franchise agreement and they cant bring US beef into Canada. Burgers are cooked to order, and are nice, but not worth the price they charge. I wasn't impressed with the fries, they were too greasy for my liking. Staff were prompt in serving, but not friendly. Nor did they seem willing to do anything to help a customer. There are a lot of additional toppings you can add to your burger, but the server just assumed you knew the menu off by heart, and wouldn't advise as to what they had or what you could put on your burger. As far as taste and awesomeness go, Five Guys is right up there with In N Out and Shake Shack for my money. Really juicy burgers, great toppings, cheese that pops. Lovely fast food burger. Five guys, I went there with my mom and my siblings. I would say for it price, you get what you paid for, I wouldn't choose five guys if your like starving and you need something delicious and filling. I would choose this, if all your places you wanted to go we're closed and this was the only restaurant opened. The food was alright it wasn't the best, the patty was kinda flat, it wasn't a juicy burger you would get at the keg but it isn't like a McDonald's burger either. It's right in between McDonald's and the keg. What I had that day was a bacon cheese burger with fries. The bacon was very dry and was too crunchy. It didn't flow with the rest of the burger. The fries however was surprisingly good, pretty nice with Ketchup. I would say five guys would be your last option for burgers. read more

Disappointed. I had heard a lot about Five Guys and was looking forward to their arriving in Oshawa. Overall the experience was just ok. The burger was bland and although the fries were fresh cut and plenty, they were just average in taste. Five Guys is also expensive, which is ok if the food is worth it. Was not the case here. There is something to be said for keeping a menu focused on what you do well. And the Five Guys have done this. The food is fresh and extremely tasty. The place was very clean and the staff was great. When placing my order, they walked me through the menu to ensure that the food I ordered was what I wanted. Sad to say, something that is not always available at every fast food joint. The price while higher then most burger joints, the quality of the product and the lack of preservatives and fillers is worth the extra coin. Being someone who loves to load a burger up with lots of toppings and enjoying a sloppy burger I was pleasantly surprised that ALL toppings were included in the price including grilled onions and mushrooms. The fries are deceiving, and next time I will opt for a "little" as I could not finish the order. I will be back and encourage you to try Five Guys. read more

I made a second trip to Five Guys because my wife & I had a rare day off together without the kids, & she wanted to try it. Once again, I had the regular hamburger (no bacon or cheese), my wife had a small cheeseburger, & we split a regular fries & a regular drink with free refills. Our order came to over $20 with taxes, so I still maintain that the food IS good, but that it IS overpriced. Value counts, & when you're paying $20 for what is essentially a combo & a junior cheeseburger, you're not getting a lot of value. The burgers were very hot, juicy & had a nice browning from the flat top, the toppings were very fresh & crisp, & the fries were better than some chip trucks. The only thing stopping me from giving it more stars is the price. I'll go back, but not until I find a coupon. read more

This is our default burger place as it's the closest one to our home. They give you free salted peanuts here! Love their burgers although a bit on the pricey side. Expect to pay double the amount of your regular burger joint. However the taste just makes up for it. The customer service here is good, nothing to write home about though. For my first time eating at Five Guys here in Oshawa, I was very impressed overall. The Little Cheeseburger (single patty) was very good. I really liked how fresh the toppings were. And the patty itself was good and very well cooked. Therefore making the cheeseburger taste so good. Since it was also my first time ever at a Five Guys, I was curious to try out both the normal fries and cajin fries. To my caution, I ordered for both fries in the little size (in case my stomach was to explode. Because you do get a TON of bonus fries (results may vary however)). And to my surprise, both the normal and cajin fries tasted and were salted enough that I never need to have ketchup with them. However, I think I would prefer the cajin fries next time I come to any Five Guys. :) After seeing some internet videos about Five Guys, I really wanted to give it a try, and so far, I'm really impressed. What I didn't see coming was that this location (not sure if the other Canadian ones apply) didn't have the custom pop fountain for you to customize your own drinks like the American Five Guys does. That kinda made me a bit disappointed, however, it wasn't too bad in the end anyway. As you could already tell by how many dollar signs are listed for any Five Guys, this Burger Chain is pricey, yet it is worth it in the end when you get your order. Though I would not recommend visiting an expensive burger joint like this too often, unless you can afford to do so. So occasional visits is just fine whenever you really want to try something new or if you are very hungry after a very long day. Overall, I give this burger joint, 4 stars out of 5. read more

They do hamburgers and fries, not much else in terms of menu selection. But they have lots of ingredients to put on your burger; you build it the way you want it. Their staff is causal and friendly. They're people and they treat you like a person. I like that. I dont' like being served by robots. I like seeing smiles on their faces and them chatting with each other. That makes me feel good being there. These are not fast food prices. It's hard to get our of there cheap, but you get a lot for the money. The burgers are thick and they fill your bag of fries with more than you can eat (split a bag with another person). The fries are noticeably high quality, and the burgers are thick, greasy, sloppy, and delicious in all the best ways. If you're trying to lose weight let Five Guys be the thing that breaks your diet. read more

The burgers are amazing, but I'd rather cheaper prices. Not because I am a cheapskate, but because I NEVER buy a drink from there or fries because I just can't justify spending over $10 for a combo. I was quite impressed with the burger I got. Unfortunately that's all I got. A decent size burger for me, and a regular burger for my wife came to 16 dollars. That's not a combo price, that don't have combos. 2 sides of fries and 2 drinks would have set us back another 11 dollars. This would have brought our meal to 30 dollars. We ordered there from our office last Wednesday. When we got back to the office, they didn't put the right ingredients on! Come on!! If someone orders a bacon and cheese burger, REMEMBER TO PUT THE BACON AND CHEESE ON!!! Two of the burgers were that and they screwed them up. On top of not putting the right condiments!! So, they gave us our order free for the next time, which was great, except they tasted like shit!! My mini was HALF the size of the bun and cheese!! We could order a burger from Wendy's for less and it would taste better. Better yet, let's just BBQ our own, sell it for cheaper than them!! The price is WAY too expensive!! Simply put: Disappointing, and overpriced. Burgers were decent, I can't really say anything bad about them. They were thick, decent sized patties, seemed fresh and were not overcooked; but I don't have anything great to say about them either. Definitely NOT worth the price paid ($25 range for one burger, one cheeseburger, and an order of fries...no drinks!) As for the fries...those were biggest disappointment of all. I was looking forward to trying them as they seemed to make a big deal out of them. They had bags of potatoes and jugs of peanut oil sitting in the dining area, and they had a sign indicating where 'Today's potatoes are from'. Very disappointing. Besides the cost, which is more than I'm willing to pay for a burger and fries combo at a fast food style chain, the food just isn't that good. I do love a greasy burger, but this was ridiculous. The cheese was just processed cheese food slices, not real cheese, and it melted into a horrible, gloopy mess on the burger. I, too, was curious as to where they get their beef, and their website is a little vague about it - "While our beef is neither organic nor are the cattle free range, our distributor purchases raw materials from the major meat suppliers in the US who are required to treat the cattle humanely and follow all the procedures set forth by the USDA." So...not necessarily Canadian beef. If they're using Canadian beef at the Canadian franchises, maybe the could update their site and not just mirror the American website for the business (yes, the above is from http://fiveguys.ca/en/about-us/faq.aspx and not the US web address http://www.fiveguys.com/about-us/faq.aspx). Oh, did I mention the way undercooked burger? No offense, but again, if I'm paying that much for a fast food burger the least you could do is cook it all the way through from me. I love a medium rare burger as much as the next person, but only when I know the meat source and that it's ground on site - yes, I know it doesn't eliminate all chances of illness, but it goes a long way towards evening the odds in my favour. My only regret was not complaining, but they were so busy I didn't want to wait another 15-20 minutes to get a replacement. The fries were surprisingly decent, but I can get fries just as good, if not better, at the chip truck on the corner of Bloor and Ritson. Oh, and those cost less for more as well. Overall I feel ripped off not just because of the food experience but because some of my friends had so many good things to say about Five Guys in their hometowns in the US.
