This park was very unique! There is a giant ledge to sit, lay out, tan, hang out, etc. Or you can hang out in the water; it is shallow enough so you are able to stand in it safely. Beware! There are little minnows that like to nibble at you. It doesn't hurt, just scared me at first. This is a great place to bring your dog. I saw many other people here with their dogs as well. I had my dog off leash the whole time with no problem. Aside from the large 5 mile dam, there are smaller bodies of water for kids or dogs to splash around in. Be careful of the slippery rocks if you choose to walk in this water! This park has a large sports complex next to it with a few ongoing soccer games. Parking is fine; there is a designated spot if you are headed to the dam. I would definitely return to this park, maybe next time more prepared (swim suit, towel, drinks, etc.). It was a one-of-a-kind place to visit.

    Lazy days of summer.

Five Mile Dam aka Dudley Johnson Park, My favorite Blanco river hangout in Hays County between San Marcos and Kyle. This old hippy hangout is a long beautiful stretch of the Blanco squeezed in between grassy lawns and tall limestone bluffs. The river is backed up into a deep cold pool at Five Mile Dam. Up stream from the dam there is a boat launch down in the deep end and fishing holes but no motor boats allowed. A few rope tree swings line the banks and entertain the fearless for hours. Down stream from the dam is a rocky riverbed great for exploring, lounging, or fighting the current. This park is very popular and crowded on warm holidays so go very early if you want a picnic table. The whole park area includes a couple adjacent parks, soccer fields, playgrounds, and it all covers about 60 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country. We river rats love and will protect this area so don't even think about littering. Don't Mess With Texas.

Absolutely beautiful park. They have a large stretch of the river where you can swim, lay out and tan, tube, or any other river activities. It is a great place to take your dog as well. The place is big enough so that you can pretty much have your own section of the river to hang out at. There are plenty of areas where the river isn't very deep so little kids can enjoy and the current isn't very strong. Although if you do go venture off to the deep areas the current does get really strong. BE AWARE OF THAT. There are plenty of places to park that are close to the river. Next to the river park area there is a HUGE sports complex area that looks great for soccer (they have plenty of goals with nets), ultimate frisbee, football, but I didn't see a basketball or volleyball court. It has a pretty big playground area for the kids. Go check it out! It's really not that far from the campus, and it's beautiful. Ohh and FREE.

A nice place to walk at, although, I would do five stars, but due to recent droughts, five mile dam doesn't have much water, sadly.

Great place to hang out, bring your dog or kids swimming. Very remote and clean. They have done a lot of work to it and cleaned the place up!

My kids love exploring behind the dam, whether with snorkels when water is high, or looking for cool rocks when water is low.

It has well established walking trails, some have pretty good shade because of the surrounding trees another area is more of an open park with more of the feel of a school track. Both are nice. There were a few people when we arrived early and as the morning drew on more people arrived. But the area is so expansive it never felt crowded. It was a very pleasant morning on this trail. I'm hoping to come back on a consistent basis to walk here as an addition to my normal workouts.

There is basically one moderate-length loop with a few branching paths to shorten or make it longer; I'd guess only about a mile. My husband and I have gone there to run a couple times. The paths are a fine gravel/dirt. There's a shallow pond in the center, not for swimming or fishing, just a water feature, along with a windmill. Sometimes the train rattles by and that's fun to hear. There's a play structure for kids as well, though it is mostly monkey bars plus a slide. Bathrooms with running water nearby. Pretty good sized parking lot, well-maintained asphalt. This park gets transformed during the Christmas season into a walkthrough where many small/local businesses get a small plot to decorate and advertise, and they typically have a few concessions like hot cocoa or kettle corn, and a Santa Claus for kids to visit. That sort of thing.

Also, there are sand volleyball courts. The kids can play on the recycled parts made playground or splash around on the splash pad in the summer. The bathrooms are clean, and drinking water is available On this recent trip up to Buda we were audience to the a free summer show. The Central Texas Theater Academy put on a fantastic rendition of Grease in the amphitheater of the park's Great Lawn. Now I will remind you that it's still hot during the Texas summer, but as the sun broke and sunsetted, a breeze passes through, the park grounds become better than bearable and all sorts of life and activity congregate. The city park in Buda is a wonderful place to enjoy your end of day with family and friends. Recommend.

They had a great cookie vendor as well. There were three different cook offs- chicken , ribs, and brisket. We were bussed from Cabella's. The buses came really often so we didn't wait long. This was a fantastic weekend. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make it run smoothly. I will be back next year to watch!

However it's developed a bit of an off leash dog program. There's poop left everywhere, and dogs running loose despite the numerous environmental issues caused by off leash dogs, the citywide leash las, and the rule stated on the front sign. I even saw someone who let their cats run loose the other day who asked me to avoid a large section of the park with my (leashed) dogs. I would have been happy to, provided they were also leashed. And of course the people who let their dogs off leash aren't concerned about other people in the park so they'll yell and curse at you if you ask them to call their dog or try to defend yourself from a strange dog barreling at you across the field. It's happened several times. I bring my dogs on a long line and they get to run around and explore to their hearts content without increasing erosion, lowering biodiversity, or being rude to other park goers. The city really needs to take some responsibility for enforcing responsible pet ownership laws.
