After the sudden retirement of my barber, my quest has been to find a traditional barber. One who through apprenticeship or attending barber school has mastered the art of cutting men's hair so that it looks great long after leaving the shop, instead of a hair stylist who cuts your hair so it looks good leaving the shop, but by the end of the day needs continual combing to appear acceptable. Additional bonus points for working in a shop with a TV in the corner and lots of well read magazines next to the chairs in the waiting area. (yes, I'm nostalgic for shops like "Floyds Barber Shop" in Mayberry, although with a modern update) This place comes close. I stopped here yesterday with no appointment. Just walked in. I was very happy to get seated right away. Scott (I think that's his name) got started on my hair and in a very short time had succeeded in reducing my overgrown mop to a short tight well groomed head of hair. So far so good. In fact after I was pleasantly surprised this morning that while I was getting ready for work today I noticed that I didnt even have to comb my hair. It fell into place. No comb needed. Based on that alone I will most likely go back. Did it feel like a traditional barber shop? For the most part yes. Scott felt a little new, but everyone's gotta start sometime, and with Mikael right next to him the traditional ways are passed on. I did miss the constant sound and feel of scissors as most of the cut was done with clippers. That's just picky, I know, but the results were unmistakably great. The one thing I did miss though was smelling like witch-hazel when I left. but then again, I'm old and that's not something most customers would miss. final judgement: Great cut, 2 thumbs way up! read more

I visited the barbershop for the first time yesterday. I had made an appointment in advance. I was pleasantly surprised to be seated right on time. The barbershop is open, roomy, and comfortable. Mikhail provided white glove service. He spent a full hour with me~ he was in no rush. He trimmed my beard perfectly. I am bald and like my head shaved ultra close. Mikhail shaved my head with hot lather, not once, not twice, but three times. Each time he steamed my scalp with hot towels in between. He finished me with an invigorating, cooling aftershave. I was looking for a new barber so I called this shop last week. Mikhail had one slot open that day due to a cancellation. The timing didn't work for me so Mikhail texted me a link to his appointment calendar on appointfix.com. I selected an open slot on this date. Mikhail had to push my appointment back twenty minutes but it was worth the brief wait. Easily the best haircut I've had in a year. Mikhail works quickly and methodically with minimal instruction. Just not the experience I was expecting. I was looking for a nice men's salon or classic barber shop experience. The shop is very nice, clean, liked the old school wood, the guys were very friendly. But I just was not a fan of the hair cut. I was not a fan of the "Flow-Bee" cutting system and after I explained that I did NOT want a fade I wanted the sides blended into the top, I ended up with something just short of a shave on the sides. read more

I moved into town this past week and was in desperate need of a haircut. So, as all millennials do, I took to Yelp to find myself a new barber. Michael's attentional to detail is second to none and yet his technique is extremely efficient. I was lucky enough for him to have an open slot just an hour after I called. I was delighted to receive a text message reminding me that I have a haircut appointment with a number to call just in case I decide to cancel (which I'm glad I did not do). Not only is Michael good at haircuts, he's also very sociable (which, I think, is a very important trait for a barber). Knowing I was new to town, he recommended a bunch of restaurants that I might like to take my family to and also told me about some must-go places. $16 for a QUICK, CLEAN cut and some good conversation - can't ask for a better value! Moved from Orlando and was really skeptical about finding a trustworthy barber to do my hair but as faith would have it. Came across this barber shop while getting food for my wife at five guys one day. Went on yelp and looked at the review and it looked promising. Made an appointment the same day and they were able to accommodate. Carson was my barber and he did an impressive job with my hair. The owner which I believe he was was super friendly. Don't go on a Saturday, unless you have an appointment with the owner. I drove 35 minutes, waited 2 hours as a walk-in, received a poor haircut, and left unsatisfied. I was impressed with all the positive reviews this place had received, so I decided to give the place a shot. It wasn't the owner that cut my hair, but an assistant that helped out on the weekend. I told him I wanted a high skin fade and to clean up the top, and showed him a picture as a reference. The fade was fine but the top was horrible. He gelled the top and told me I was done before I even got a chance to look at how he cut the top. When I tried to tell him how I wanted the top, he was adamant in telling me it wasn't going to work, and that he couldn't do anything else since it was already gelled. Why didn't you ask me before you gelled my hair if it was good? When the barber adds product to your hair, that is the signal your cut is finished, but it is common practice to ask if the customer is satisfied with the cut beforehand and what product they'd like to finish it off. I just felt like he rushed the cut since it was nearly closing time and there were still some customers waiting. Which is ironic since I was speaking to him about the shop and how quality over quantity was everything. I had already waited 2 hours, yet I received a cut and service equivalent to Greatclips/Supercuts, which is the exact opposite of what I wanted, and why I wanted to give Fiver Star Barbers my business. Many reviews pointed out how great the shop was at giving attention to detail, but I did not receive that today. I didn't mind waiting two hours as I was a walk-in, and it was rather busy, But it sucks to wait two hours, receive a 15 minute rushed cut, and leave with a crappy cut. I still gave the barber a $5 tip. I don't blame the owner for my unsatisfactory experience as he did not cut my hair, but I expect to receive the same quality of service from his employees. I may give the place another chance, but I'll make sure to make an appointment with the owner beforehand. read more
