Recent Order 10/11/24. They were coming through my area the next day so included my order in their trip. I ordered a cord. The quality was very good. Turn around time was excellent. There was maybe one ugly log worth in the lot and a few splits that were weird shape because of knots. Very few pieces with remaining bark. I originally contacted them for a cord (we have a big fireplace, and can easily burn through 4-5 "bundles" from the grocery store in a single night) in early November, after researching who could provide me kiln dried wood vs. seasoned. So here's why they didn't get 5 stars on this review: Communications were a bit poor, and issues cropped up. My delivery was scheduled for early December, which wasn't unexpected, given that I placed my order at the peak of the season. But that day I still hadn't heard from anyone, so I called in and was told, "Of course there's no delivery; it's pouring down rain." Understood, and I get that, but would have appreciated a call or e-mail in advance offering to re-schedule. Which, they ultimately did. But then, re-delivery day came and still no info, so I checked in. I was told that they had had mechanical issues with the truck, and they were behind on deliveries because of this that and the other, and people were complaining about the wood not burning. So Daniel, with whom I've corresponded via e-mail apologized again, and offered a split deal, the cord price split with 1/2 cord now and 1/2 cord in January. I could easily accept that, as some kiln-dried firewood is better than none, and the grocery store crap is a rip off (burns bright and cheery, but fast and $$). The delivery guys were top notch. I wanted them to dump on the one side of the driveway because I thought it was a dump truck and there are two trees canopying the other side, but the guy said, "No, no worries, we'll unload using some large bins." Which they proceeded to do, and in 20 minutes had 1/2 a cord dumped right in front of the wood racks in which I would stack it. The wood was all dry and in great shape, with lots of bits of kindling and such part of the mix, and stacked out to just a bit more than 1/2 cord, and smelled great. Bug free, rot free. Mostly oak. Burns hot and slow. May not be as "bright" as the grocery store stuff, but it HEATS. I look forward to the second 1/2 cord in January. read more

Buyer Beware! We requested an order of 2 cords of 'kiln-dried' wood to be delivered and stacked via their web site in late November/early December. We followed up via phone and text several more times. I received a vm from the owner the day before Christmas to call him as soon as possible. We had already gone ahead and ordered a cord of wood from another company at this time so were not in a rush to call him back during the holidays and were not really interested in doing business with them again since they have such poor communication. On January 4th, the owner left me 2 vms within an hour to let me know that our 2 cords of wood was on its way to be delivered to our home. Wow! While I was ready to call him back and tell him to turn his truck around, my husband decided to go home to meet them and accept the delivery. They did show up and stacked the wood. The wood is awful! It doesn't burn and is smoky...we bought a moisture meter just to check. Kiln-dried wood is supposed to be 6-8% moisture. We tested a large portion of the wood. Maybe 1 in 5 logs is kiln dried. We had many that read as high as 30% on the meter. Additionally, it's not 90% oak. There are lots of pine and maple logs as well. Maybe 70% oak. So, a week after the delivery we called the owner and told him about the wet wood, etc. He said he'd have to talk to his son, who was out of town for the weekend, and that they'd call us back the following week. No call the following week. We called again, a week later, and had to leave a vm reiterating the same message about our recent order not being kiln dried as well as the fact that we never received the return call that the owner said we would receive. We're not expecting to hear anything at this point. And so, here we are. My first yelp review and it's a doozy. Again, buyer beware! read more

He asked questions to help him determine exactly what I needed. I ended up buying a Cord of Kiln Dried fire wood. Within a week the wood was delivered and stacked, exactly where I wanted. I ordered firewood from Five Star Firewood for the first time this season. I ordered half a cord and got more than that. I have two racks, each holds about 1/4 cord, and had to pile a bunch of wood on a deck next to one of the racks. The wood feels dry and certainly burns well. Kiln dried, I think not, kiln heated maybe. I received an order in Oct 2013, decided I needed to split some of the bigger logs, and steam came out. I though to myself, well its probably just the really big logs needed more time. Unfortunately, this turend out to be the story with pretty much all of the wood. Bought my first half cord from Five Start this month and I will continue to be a customer. Everything was how they promised. On time delivery, all hard wood, and cut to the size I wanted. I just finished stacking the last of it. There were absolutely no bugs at all in it, and no bug holes in the wood either. The kiln dried wood made it all worth it. If you care at all about your firewood, you'll want to order from these guys. It may be a bit more expensive then some others, but you are getting a product that is worth it. Unfortunately I believe I got my delivery from the same pile of wood as Andrew P who reviewed on 1/6/14. I received my delivery last week just before the major cold came in and was looking forward to having a nice fire going. I paid a higher price to get the kiln dried firewood so I would be sure it would burn well. When stacking the wood I noticed it felt a little wet but figured that was from the rain on the previous weekend. I also noticed some of the wood was extremely dirty; it looked like it had spent a bit laying on the ground. Upon starting the fire (or attempting to) I had to use multiple fire starters and tons of kindling just to keep the fire going. The wood hissed and sizzled like nothing I have heard before. It sounds like something I would have chopped down and split just before throwing in to burn. I have to tend the fire constantly just to keep it going, adding small pieces and kindling just to keep the a hot bed of coals. I have had better luck with those bundles of wood you buy outside the 7-11 or grocery store. I looked here on yelp and also on angies list and it looks like sometime in 2013 the reviews started heading south for five star. I also noticed nobody was able to resolve their issues with the company. I have not tried to contact the company because I do not feel it is worth my time and frustration. I will simply keep the wood and have a cord of seasoned wood next year. If I can figure out how I will upload a picture as well to show the quality wood that was delivered. Edit: 7/9/2014: With winter long gone and burning of wood at a halt (with exceptions for campfires, I suppose), I ended up burning about a quarter to a half of the wood that was delivered. I took delivery of a half-cord myself about two years ago now, and it's lasted me into this season. I intend to order again later this fall. They offer the best wood I've ever had the pleasure of setting alight. From the first log to the last, no paper or kindling has ever been necessary, a simple paraffin starter and one match is all it takes. Pricing was at a slight premium over other options, but you get what you pay for, and this was well worth it. I received a 1/2 cord of wood this past winter (not a euphemism). Well, if you recall, it has been warm most of the winter so I only very recently in late Feb tried to use it. They tout it as "kiln dried" but it really is full of moisture and would need another 8 monts to even a year to dry! I called them They were very nice and told me to just put kindling under it. Uh, this is the upper northwest section of DC--we don't have kindling just laying around. So I had to buy wood from the hardware store (another $80). Called him back--he agreed to bring kindling at no extra cost. Bottom line owner seems like a nice enough fellow on the phone--but should stop trying to sell people obviously WET wood (at a pretty premium price, btw!) and then give you a long song and dance about how the wood only burns when there's a hot fire under it. We're not all dumb city folks here in DC, y'know! Don't insult people's intelligence by explaining the science of how wood burns! In other news: water is still wet...buy your firewood with less hassle elsewhere. read more

The ordering and delivery process was easy and worked well. The wood itself is NOT kiln dried or not dried long enough or they have no idea what they are doing. Or they know exactly what they are doing- charging a bunch of suckers (like myself) for "kiln dried" firewood when in fact it is heavy and full of the water. The two fires I've had with this wood were very smokey and popped like crazy. Don't be a sucker like me. You are better off with seasoned wood with another vendor. My first negative yelp review of a business. This company not only missed their stated delivery date but more importantly the wood that five-star firewood delivered to my house has not been fully seasoned and is still wet. There is absolutely no way my delivered wood had been kiln dried. During the coldest week of the Winter, today being the coldest my family and I cannot warm our home with the current wood. High quality, uniform pieces about 16-18" long, all oak, lots of small kindling in the mix. Burns great. Only complaint is way too much tiny scrap pieces, probably almost a cubic yard of pieces too small to be kindling, almost like mulch. Don't know what to do with it all. Hence only 4 stars. read more

This is an update to my previous 2 star review, which basically covered delivery, and how the wood looked. I have now had several fires and have added one star. I ordered the kiln dried, and it was still warm from the kiln when it arrived. I put a bunch right into the house. I can't decide if I like this wood or not. There are many large pieces that could stand to be split again. I bought split wood because I currently can't split wood due to back problems. As some other reviewers have said, this wood doesn't burn well. Very little flame. I suppose if I had a wood stove this would be good wood because it does burn/smolder, it's just not pretty. It does seem to give off a decent amount of heat, though, and I am using less pieces of wood per hour than I have with wood from other places. read more

This firewood wood is amazing... Stop searching Yelp for the best firewood in the area, this is probably your best bet. Bought a half cord, left it in the garage for a few weeks before we lit the first fire and this stuff lit up so quick you would've thought it was laced with gas. The best thing was how clean and cut it was. No bugs, no extra crap, and every piece was 12-16 inches. Literally none that I have to split with my axe like I usually do. Ordered 1/4 cord of "kiln dried" firewood. Was not even close to what I got from Merrifield Garden Center last year. I was too busy to go pick it up and stack it myself, so I ordered from Two Star Firewood. They neatly stacked 1/4 cord of firewood. Except that many pieces were cut short. And many pieces were not dry. Spit and sizzled in the fireplace. Did not burn as nice as the real kiln dried firewood I got from Merrifield. Sorry guys, but you had one job. read more

This company was very professional and reliable. They were recommended to me by my neighbor and, indeed, they provided great quality wood at a good price. I paid less last year from someone who came by my house, but they shorted the amount and then the wood was not seasoned. These guys contacted me ahead of time to let me know what time they would arrive. They showed up on time. Very professional. Most importantly, great wood with low moisture content. Five star is right! Just moved into an old house with wood fireplace and pit in the backyard. Searched around and most said their seasoned wood was depleted by the demand created by the cold weather lately. Ran across Five Star and opted to give their kiln dried wood a try. Very smooth transaction. They came out a couple days after. Very friendly! They stacked the wood in back yard and gave helpful hints on where to place and protect. As I'm a novice at firewood, I decided to invest in a humidity checker and the wood rested less than 5%. Will use these guys again! read more

Just used 5 STAR FIREWOOD. I live in Annapolis, MD and I wanted KILN DRIED firewood and no body has it- except 5 STAR FIREWOOD. Kiln dried - no bugs and I can store it in my garage. I live out of the standard delivery area and so we agreed on a delivery price (buying a lot- saves $ - I bought 4 cords) and it was delivered -clean -dry- and smells really really nice in my garage. The guys stacked the additional amount in rack (which I cover) outside. The guys were professional - courteous and worked very hard. Rick the owner- is great to deal with. A true businessman. This review is for wood I purchased in the fall of 2014. The delivery was postponed by over a month. When the new delivery date came around, they missed it. I got all kinds of apologies about their truck breaking down, they finally made to my house on the third try. The wood was not good. I've had kiln dried wood before, but I was trying to save some money, so I went with Five Star. Cheaper is not always better. I had trouble with my cord of wood all winter, it was not dry and did not burn easily. I will not be purchasing from them again. read more

If I could give zero stars I would! I paid a premium for kiln-dried wood, but the wood doesn't burn. It is clearly not kiln dried so I have a cord of wood that is essentially useless. The owner (Rick) said that I am apparenlty too hard to please (because I expect the wood to actually burn?). It is clear that they delivered wood that hadn't been through the kiln-drying process, but he said that was not possible, even though he wasn't the one that personally loaded the truck. He said he would replace it, but of course he didn't and and didn't return any of my phone calls after that. Terrible way to run a business. . .would not recommend. read more

This company claims it does everything to comply with USDA regulations on their website. The opposite seems to be the case, they were certified years ago to get the USDA seal, however they have never been re-certified since. If you deal with them tell them to show you a current certificate. read more

I can't say that I would recommend Five Star. Last year I bought a load of wood that allegedly had been "seasoned" for 18-24 months, but it would not burn unless I split it. So this year I decided to pay for the much higher priced kiln dried wood. Alas, it's the same story with Fivestar --- the wood will not burn unless it's split. And some of it, after I split it, is soaking wet inside, like it was just cut and never pit into a kiln. SO either Fivestar has kiln problems, or their operation is a scam. read more
