Unfortunately, my recent experience was very disappointing. I currently do not have dental insurance and am a student, so I am paying out of pocket. I wanted to schedule a basic cleaning because I strongly believe in preventative care. However, I was told I would be required to enroll in an in-office plan that includes X-rays, in addition to paying for the cleaning itself. I explained that I cannot afford additional diagnostic costs right now and requested to decline new X-rays. The office already has X-rays from one year ago. I was told that due to "liability," they would not provide a cleaning without taking new X-rays and that there were no exceptions. As a result, I was refused care. It's discouraging that preventative care that helps patients avoid more serious and expensive problems is inaccessible without agreeing to additional services. For students and uninsured patients trying to stay proactive about their health, policies like this create unnecessary barriers. Unfortunately, I will either have to go without care until I can get insurance again or find somewhere else that actually provides accessible healthcare.

The Dr. was great, but receptionists that lie instead of just checking; are not good at their job and there should be a repercussion as CLEARLY no one would pay insurance to then go to some facility that does not accept it when there are so many other options in Flagstaff that do. I found Dr. Darlington's bedside manner to be a bit lacking. I've had several fillings and crowns…read morehere, and he never let the lidocaine set in for long enough before starting, despite my request for a longer wait after numbing. The general theme of my care there was a significant amount of discomfort and pain. General cleanings consisted of him inquiring of any pain or discomfort, doing a quick exam and exiting to let the hygienists take over. Disclaimer: I don't have perfect dental hygiene but I try to take care of my teeth and like most people forget to floss. In December '15 I had a crown placed by this office due to sensitivity when biting down which he diagnosed as a crack. The procedure was awful and I wasn't given enough time to get numb. The sensitivity never really did go away and I switched to a new dentist in March '16. In July 2016, I woke up to 10/10 pain in the tooth. I spent the week in a narcotic coma and taking lots of antibiotics and steroids. I work in healthcare on nights and I cannot miss work, as there is simply no one to cover for nights if you get sick. I had to call out 1 shift due to all this, thankfully a coworker covered for me or I would have had to go to work with all that pain. A second set of x-rays showed a large area of infection around and in the tooth. It needed a root canal and when the old crown came off, half the tooth had rotted away and the cavity was a hair away from the tooth pulp. It was pretty gruesome looking. Apparently this all could have been avoided by properly diagnosing the problem in the first place. There was never a crack. Dr. Darlington's front office staff was very nice and I will be getting a refund for the co-pay for the first crown. I hate to make disparaging comments against anyone, but I feel my experience was poor enough that I should caution anyone with sensitive or problem ridden teeth. Sorry Dr. D. I found the work and bedside manner to be slapdash. Not good when dental care is already a dread for most people.
