I had not heard of Pasteis de Nata until the day before Easter when a friend told me her family always had them for Easter, I said they sounded good and she said she would bring some home (she is also my neighbor) if any were left over. When she told me her cousin had stopped at a bakery in Brookline for some, I remembered reading about Flake online and was instantly intrigued and in her kitchen in no time. She handed me a plate of 3 and said her favorite way to eat them was after a few minutes in the toaster oven to warm up. Since there were 3, I decided to try them at room temp, warmed and cold from the refrigerator. Warm was lovely, I tasted the butter in the flaky crust and I love butter (who doesn't?), cold was nice and room temp may have been my favorite. They seem to either sell or be known for only one item--the egg tart. They're cute and could easily become something worth paying a high price for, don't get me wrong... it seems quite unique and trendy. What troubles me, however, is the notion that there's this luxurious looking instructions postcard provided -- making it look like something so elegant and of high importance that must be followed. So, here's my question. Should such instructions be followed? Don't have one of those elegant instructions card with me at this moment, but I remember it being something along the line of: - place the tarts onto a plate without covering (note: this means the provided box is not good enough for us to store the tarts--we need to remove these tarts and place them on a plate (too much hassle, IMHO); - the tarts are good for 24 hours at RT (room temperature); - some more details on the reheat instructions; Like, that's a whole lots of protocols to follow and really doesn't appear to be made for someone that just want to have an easy life and just eat it simply for leisure without going though the hassle of following all those rules and procedures, IMHO. What about this? When you happened to purchase a box here, that happened to not be right out of the oven, does this mean you should not eat it right away? And wait till you get home with some chance to follow the elegant instructions card before being able to indulge in this luxurious but time consuming piece of what probably should've been some quick eat? I don't know. And the answers to my questions are either unknown and/or not so obvious to us laymen/laywomen unfamiliar to the bakerology of egg tarts. Maybe this business could do a better job of explaining. Or, if not, do get rid of the elegant instructions card (which might be the only gimmick making each tart so ridiculously but might be persuasive for someone to pay such high price for it...) I can see the bakers creating the tarts in front of my eyes and the smells illuminating the air. Not only do they look delicious, they also taste delicious!! The fresh, buttery, and flakey layered crust holds a sweet, delicate, and warm custard. After eating just one, I wish I had another to eat on my way home. It transported me back to the time I had a Portuguese Pastel De Nata in Macau. The tarts seem to be in high demand. They have a pre order system by the hour. A small little bakery that opened up on Beacon Street right by Coolidge Corner that sells one amazing pastry. I came here on a weekend afternoon after lunch and had to wait about 10 minutes for the next batch to be completed. They don't take orders until the batch is done, so you have to hang around until it's ready. This gave me enough time to decide how many to order since there's a choice of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 12. The more you buy the cheaper each one is. I decided on the 6 pack which makes each tart $3 each. Since they were fresh out of the oven, the server told us to keep our boxes open to let the tarts cool off. There are 2 small tables to sit and enjoy a tart and a coffee while you watch them continue to make these Portuguese tarts. The crust is superb! Flakey, but not overly buttery, and the custard has layers of flavor to it. You'll get a nice soft consistency of custard that pairs perfectly with the crust.
