    Fantastic!

I had not heard of Pasteis de Nata until the day before Easter when a friend told me her family always had them for Easter, I said they sounded good and she said she would bring some home (she is also my neighbor) if any were left over. When she told me her cousin had stopped at a bakery in Brookline for some, I remembered reading about Flake online and was instantly intrigued and in her kitchen in no time. She handed me a plate of 3 and said her favorite way to eat them was after a few minutes in the toaster oven to warm up. Since there were 3, I decided to try them at room temp, warmed and cold from the refrigerator. Warm was lovely, I tasted the butter in the flaky crust and I love butter (who doesn't?), cold was nice and room temp may have been my favorite. For more of my scientific testing, I may need at least 3 more!

The Pasteis de Nata (Portugese custard tarts) here are the best that i've found in the Greater Boston area. The tarts have a nice buttery flaky crust and a silky smooth rich custard. I found that the tarts have a short shelf life though, so unless you are able to get them fresh out of the oven, it will not be as flaky. Also, the tarts can be inconsistent (e.g one tart from the same exact batch can be much more flaky and cooked than the other).

These are the best Portuguese egg tarts served in a bakery or coffee shop in Boston. The crust is buttery and flaky, but not too oily when eating or holding it. It's a Simple place that only sells Portuguese egg tarts, and the beautiful box provides directions for heating them up if they're not eating right away.

Flake is a newer bakery just outside Coolidge Corner that specializes in Portuguese egg tarts, and it definitely draws a crowd. When we visited, the shop was fairly busy, but the staff handled orders quickly and smoothly. We picked up four egg tarts to try. The crust was flaky and had a satisfying crisp texture, which really stood out. The custard filling, though, wasn't quite what we were expecting--it was creamier and softer than other versions we've had, with a noticeable hint of cinnamon. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the custard's texture or flavor, but the people I shared them with enjoyed it and thought it was well done. Overall, it was a solid experience. Not something I'd get again, but I can see why others would be into it.

Love the idea of getting a pastel de nata to go, in a bag, to eat as soon as you walk out. So conveniently located by the green line too. I go to the weekly protest and eat a little treat

A small and modern Portuguese Pastel De Nata shop located on the corner of Beacon street. I love how open and inviting the bakery feels. I can see the bakers creating the tarts in front of my eyes and the smells illuminating the air. Not only do they look delicious, they also taste delicious!! The fresh, buttery, and flakey layered crust holds a sweet, delicate, and warm custard. After eating just one, I wish I had another to eat on my way home. It transported me back to the time I had a Portuguese Pastel De Nata in Macau. The tarts seem to be in high demand. They have a pre order system by the hour. I was able to place my order and pick up 30 minutes later. Well worth the experience!

Very simple place, come here for the pastel de nata and thats it! Does what it does SO well, very tasty and so fresh. I enjoy how you can get one singular one to try and aren't forced into multiples like most places

Tried their pastel de nata. I like the crust. It's not too thick and it's crispy. The custard filling is creamy, but it's a bit too sweet for me.

Cute little pastry shop in Coolidge corner with Pastel de Nata fresh every few hours. Delicious food and fast when there is no line... ambiance is a cafe style with only 2 tables fitting 2-3 people comfortably

Flake had a sign outside their door to indicate that they were only accepting walk in orders at 4pm and asked to limit people's orders to only two pieces. It seems like they are still working on a system to meet the demands as their supplies are inadequate. We walked in right on the dot, and they sold out for the day within minutes. The pastries were not that warm but super flakey and delicious after reheating at home. They were on the smaller side for the price, but if you just want to enjoy some for a quick bite, it is great. I feel like it is on the sweeter side, but still enjoyable. The store itself is on the smaller side with only limited seating, so this is better to grab on the go and enjoy at home. Service could be better but maybe they were just overwhelmed for the day. Overall, I will come back if I am craving Pastel de Nata and want to treat myself.

Little bakery that specializes in pasteis de nata, no other food options available here. Prices per pastry decrease with increasing pastries so worth it to buy more (once you taste one, there wont be such a thing as too many). They have some pastries that they keep warm and others which are not that they seem to reserve for customers who are planning to take them home rather than eating right away. If you do plan to split a dozen among friends or households, you can buy extra boxes (prices vary per box size, generally less than a dollar). Packaging is nice with a large paper bag that allows even the dozen size tray to lie flat (and decorated with cute illustration of the pastries) and reheating instructions. The price point is a little higher than the egg tarts and Portuguese egg tarts that they sell in Chinese bakeries, which are usually more on the range of $1.5-$1.75 compared to $2.75 to $3.5 each.

I've been wanting to try these Portuguese egg tarts since they opened! I'm so glad Boston now has a bakery that specializes in Portuguese egg tarts! I came here on a weekday afternoon so there was no line and plenty of egg tarts available. You can also preorder online for pick up. The crust is so buttery and flakey like it should be and the custard was creamy and eggy! It was a little bit too sweet for me. They also have powdered sugar and cinnamon powder if you wanted to put that on top. They are a little bit pricey for the size of the tarts! It's a nice little treat if you're in the area!

Stumbled upon the store front and grabbed the IG. Looked really good so had to come by when they are not sold out. The tarts are pricey for their size but taste good. The crust is flakey and the custard is totally different from other fillings in the area. They are constantly baking more, so the next batch is quick. They do let them cool before giving them to you (honestly for a good reason). Even cooled they are HOT in the middle and I would have burned my mouth if I got them fresh outta the oven. The coffee is just OK.

Their menu is full of authentic bakery staples at reasonable prices. Also, the service is fantastic. Everyone is friendly and efficient despite the long line. I tried their pretzel croissant which was one of the best croissants I've had in a long time. The flakiness was impressive while it retained the strong taste of a traditional pretzel. I'm simply amazed. Also, their iced latte was pretty good! I got their seasonal Lavender Latte which was refreshing and strong. It didn't have that perfume-y aftertaste that often comes with floral flavors. Overall, I'm incredibly impressed and only wish I lived closer to be able to come more often.

The lines fortunately moved quickly and we were out of there in 20 min! The pastries are sooooo incredible you absolutely need to try. Our favorites were the Gruyère monkey pull apart bread (similar to the Gruyère croissant but a bit bigger) and we loved it so much we literally dug every piece out from the little cardboard bowl it comes in. A close second was their weekly special the Muhaamura feta croissant which was delectable-- I had never thought of putting Muhaamura in a croissant but damn does it work! It also went so well with the Gruyère it was truly a combo made in heaven. Both are also super light and won't make you feel super heavy after! We also got some sweet options including the chocolate chunk cookie and walnut morning bun which were super solid, but out of the sweet items the olive oil cake was our favorite. It is SUPER dense but truly the perfect dessert to have with tea in the afternoon-- I will definitely think about bringing this next time I'm visiting someone's house! It's not too sweet but flavored so well. Overall this place is soooo worth the wait--- definitely check it out!
