While this is not a big store, it is perfect for the items they focus on. Organic and more natural products. Dropped in to pick up some pre packed noodles, seaweed, pasta salads and vegetables. Ugh didn't take pictures, but all was delicious and made with better ingredients. However! Upon walking in, there was a whole display of pumpkin items. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love pumpkin season. Bought 8 out of the 10 pumpkin items on display haha This place is always well stocked and clean. Staff is Always pleasant. I really want to like this co-op, I truly do! The produce is solid, I appreciate that it stays open late, and the prices seem competitive. I've previously worked at a food cooperative as a GM and have been a member of various co-ops in California, Utah, Massachusetts, and upstate New York. I love co-ops. Over the past 10 years, I've visited more than 50 of them, and this is the only one where I've genuinely felt unwelcome. Since moving to the area, I've stopped by this location about 10 times. 3/4ths of the time, the checkout experience has been...weird. The clerks rarely greet me or even acknowledge me when I'm checking out. I usually have to initiate a "Hi" or ask, "Are you open?" One time, I stood there for a full minute while the cashier continued chatting with a coworker. It was awkward, and honestly, a little uncomfortable. Another time, a cashier whose line I was in told me another line was open and directed me there, only for that second cashier to tell me she wasn't actually open, and pointed me to a third one. I felt like I was stuck in a weird game of musical chairs, just without the music (or the chairs). If I'm in your line and you're open, just please check out my groceries lol. Of course, no one owes anyone a "hi" or conversation, but I shop at co-ops because, in my experience, there's usually an implicit interest in fostering connection/community among staff. That's always been part of what makes co-ops special to me, and I just haven't felt that here. Maybe I'm just going at the wrong times. I'm all for supporting local and cooperative models, but I'm hoping for a warmer experience elsewhere. I'll be trying out Park Slope next! read more

what in god's name happened to this food co-op? all the foods my family used to eat they no longer carry and instead have replaced them with "inferior brands" that i will not purchase. the other brands did very well and were always scooped up when offered. the inferior brands even da ys later are still on the shelves. they buyers of food for this store have changed and whether they are getting "kickbacks" to bring in inferior food brands, i don't know, but over the past year or so it has gotten progressively worse. when i ask the manager he said some of the products have gotten too expensive and the warehouses are not carrying them! i don't buy it! something else is going on with this place and i am shopping there a lot less! people were still buying the products that were best sellers so it has nothing to do with the prices...it is just an excuse for "something else very fishy going on"!!!! go somewhere else and put them out of business! read more

Take the 1 star reviews with a grain of salt because this is THE best organic grocery store in Brooklyn. If you have a passion and great understanding of quality, healthy produce, this will be your treasure. So much better selection than any of those park slope groceries with brands that have more ethical practices. The best part is the wide selection of pasture-raised, grass-fed, grass-finished meats which is hard to come by in NYC!! Many of the farms are right next door in Connecticut or Jersey. Also they sell a lot of smaller brand names that are harder to find, which I appreciate. Always a win to support a local community-owned co op (you don't have to be a member either though the perks are great). read more

There seems to be a lot of hate on here, but I had a great experience, albeit only been here once. My friend lives close by and frequently shops here, so I decided to joined her. Great selection of produce. Organic purple sweet potatoes can be hard to find, but they've got it here and reasonably priced. Good bulk food and nuts selections. The staff I interacted with was very nice. Checkout was also quick despite what looked like a long line; they have a fair number of registers and move quickly. Sure, some items are expensive (the norm for a natural food shop), but I'm the type of person that has my go to's and then will buy things that are on sale and incorporate those in my diet. If I lived closer, I'd def be a member. Side note: This is a cute semi-hidden gem of a neighborhood. Worth checking out before doing your shopping. These prices really incentivize you to become a coop member. $3.50 for a pint of milk and $6.50 for a dozen eggs is a lot by any measure. They do carry a lot of nicer brands for most products, be it for chocolate, soap, or veggie burgers, but brand selection is quite slim and I genuinely can't get over the prices. They are implementing all covid precautions including limiting the number of people in store and have installed plexiglass partitions between cashier and customer, so at the very least I do feel safe shopping here, which counts for something. I'd have to be looking for something specific that only they carry for me to make this the place I shop for groceries though. read more

Ok this my reviews of Flatbush Food coop it's alright. I have been here numerous times when I am in the hood to get a few items. Today I purchased the tofu turkey salad ( veggie no meat), organic tomatoes soup and there was fab sale on can dice tomatoes organic. The point of the shopping for me here is to purchase items I can not find else where or get sale things. The pricing is high that why I only rate this establishment three stars ostore. Plus the place was not organized well displace etc. if you want to be a high end place have a great presentation, that's rule one is sales. read more

This just about the only business I know of in NYC that still enforces a mask to be worn inside which fair enough, it's their right. I think we got bigger things to worry about in society nowadays than being tailed 10 seconds within walking in because I wasn't wearing a mask. It was my first time entering, and my last. Dear management, get over it. Seriously. It's summer of 2022 and NYC is in full swing with concerts and social events back on with zero restrictions. Go outside the majority of New Yorkers are not wearing masks. Every business I've entered has not required one so far this past Spring and this Summer so stop expecting everyone who wants to check out your supermarket to be carrying one with them. I've lived in this neighborhood for 16 years and have been shopping at the Flatbush Food Coop since it was a smaller store across the street. Everyone has always been professional and friendly. It's a good alternative to going to Whole Foods with a large selection of organic and natural products. It seems most of these negative reviews have been during the pandemic. I don't think there is a more challenging job than working retail during the worst pandemic in American history. I've worked retail and restaurants before there was a pandemic and it was brutal. So, maybe keep that in mind and treat the people who are providing the food you need with a little more care. It's a very stressful job. Every time I go in I get treated horribly. This time the cashier scolded me "I am with a customer." I said ok I just put my stuff down and she continued to argue with me. The manager stepped in but she glared at me and then told me to meet her at midnight. Never going back there. What a shame they have such low class people working there. Also, the carrot ginger turmeric juice was labeled as on sale for $2.99 and they rang it up at full price. It's tough to check your receipt when you're being threatened by the staff. read more

I used to shop here when I first moved to the neighborhood, but you really have to be on the lookout for expired products. I bought a piece of cheese once and when I got home I realized it had gone bad, there was non-cheesy mold growing on the bottom and between the folds of the wrapper. To top it off, the people who work here are mostly rude and unhelpful. I remember ONE cashier actually smiling at me and making me feel welcome. If this is really a community store, there should be more of a sense of community. Just go down the road. It's not fancy but the people are kind and the products are always good. read more

Produce didn't look fresh, albeit expensive; I had to dig for a bit to find anything that looked remotely good. Bought a 3/4 lbs. filet piece of King Salmon @ 27 dollars a pound (enough about for 2/3 people), only to find that it hadn't be descaled OR deboned. The whole purpose of buying a filet are those two requirements... Good beer selection I suppose, but head over to C-Town @ 16th and Newkirk for similar, fairly priced options. Or just go to the breweries (most are Brookyn based). Threes, Grimm and Evil Twin have gorgeous taprooms right here. And growlers are much more friendly!!! I'm not a member, but this was my first and last time shopping here. Better to visit local greenmarkets and stores that uphold the values that they hail. read more

Our family loves this store. Everything they have is high quality and they have an abundance of healthy grocery items. You get what you pay for! The cashiers and staff are so helpful. I was looking for something and couldn't find it and kind of lost interest, however, there was this super nice cashier who found it for me. It's become a tradition that I come to this store, fill up my cart with the 3-4 items they sell that aren't appallingly overpriced, and then leave the cart on the floor and walk out, due to lack of time to wait on line stretching around the store. I don't know who redesigned the layout of this place but must have been high. Anyway, the organic milk is decently priced. Cheese is basically the same as any higher end store. Sometimes I buy one of the organic beef brands they sell. They put out frozen bread and sell it as fresh. Produce INSANELY expensive and not that fresh. True, the other groceries in the hood are terrible, much worse in quality...but my choice is generally to take the train to Wegman's. I'm giving them 2 stars for staying in business, which is impressive. read more

It's a testament to how poor the supermarkets in this area are that the lines in this place are so long. Actually, it's a testament to how poorly this place is run that the lines are so long. You'll see two cashiers at peak hours and people waiting (patiently, this is a co-op) for half an hour for their meager items. The prices--even with a yearly membership--are on par with farmer's markets, meaning you're paying a lot for stuff that can be had much fresher elsewhere. And you're not guaranteed of the quality. (My chicken generally goes bad well before the sell-by date, suggesting imperfect handling.) The selection of coffee is dire, btw. Left over from Covid is the policy of not touching your bag to help you load your groceries. Early in the pandemic we learned that the virus was unlikely to be transmitted via surfaces, but the co-op took the opportunity to withhold a portion of the service because -- I don't know why. I know it makes those lines even longer. And there's not a lot of room by the register to negotiate. Three stars is still a pretty good rating. I like the hours and... you know... there's nothing else comparable in the area. read more

It's great that it's a cooperative store, ostensibly owned by its neighbors. However, it doesn't feel particularly 'cooperative' in its essence. The prices are quite high. I often go in thinking I'll buy something regardless if it's a little marked up, because hey it's a cooperative and that's great. But then see the price and get sticker shock. Actually, lately the problem has been that the produce is not labeled with the price per pound. Which, seems uncaring toward those of us (the many of us) being cautious of how much money we spend at the grocery store. Unfortunately, the Key Food down the street has pretty bad produce even if the prices are certainly lower. read more

Yeesh. Okay, first of all, I come here at least once a week. It's a block away from my apartment. I like the vibes. It's a relaxing shopping experience, and the staff have been nice to me. The security staff at the entrance are kind and wonderful. It's very expensive, though. Everything is expensive. I wish they could carry some more affordable stuff... What upsets me is how often the produce is bad. I spent a lot on raspberries this morning. They seemed fine when I looked at them, but I came home to see that half were rotten. This has happened to me before with onions, garlic, etc. Normally, I can brush this kind of thing off. But the food is SO expensive that this kind of thing really shouldn't be happening! I have been coming here for 3 years and today I am feeling pissed. Please throw out the rotten produce! Don't try to sell it to us. I do recommend the coop. But be *very* careful with the fruits and veggies you buy and stay mindful of the price of everything else. read more

The store has racist staff and racist policies. They have random credit card policies (that are inherently racist themselves) and choose who to to enforce them upon. I have been here with a white person and wasn't asked for ID then came alone and all of a sudden was asked for ID for a $10 purchase when I'm a member and treated with utter disrespect by the cashier and the manager. We have sinced stopped shopping here and urge others to do the same. Their policies can lead to the death of black lives and they need to change it asap. read more

My first time shopping in this store and I'm completely disgusted. On my way out after I paid, I quickly jammed the food in my 2 bags to get out of the way of the next customer. Then because I had 1 1/2 miles to walk with my groceries and it was wet and sleeting outside, I moved to the shelf by the front windows and tried to even out the weight in my grocery bags so I could make it home. Immediately the security guard roughly screams at me "you can't do that here!" and when I asked for a few seconds to organize my load, he screamed at me again. Unfortunately, that is what I will take home with me and I will not shop in this store again. Disgraceful. read more

I'm shocked by some of the negative reviews I see here. I have lived in PPS since July, and joined the Coop almost immediately. I love that they have long hours (6am - midnight daily), and a great selection of organic produce and high quality meats, which makes up the majority of my purchases. The prices for these items, in my experience, are better than/on par with Whole Foods and other area stores. "Center aisle" items, like almond butter or tomato sauce, are more hit-or-miss, price wise. Crowds can be an issue, especially during the hours that the farmers market down the street is open, but I take advantage of their later evening hours for that reason. They recently remodeled the store so the layout is more intuitive. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this store and shop here often. read more

I have a love/ hate relationship with the Brooklyn Co-op... What I love: I love that it's close to my home and offers a good selection of organic ingredients you won't normally find at a regular supermarket. They offer a wide variety of organic seasonal veggies and fruits (eat them quickly as they will go bad sooner because they are organic) the price point is pretty good and they usually offer sales on most items. Something here are grossly over priced such as fish! I would never spend 20+ dollars on a fillet of Salmon... Whole foods doesn't even charge that much! What I hate: The people who work here really shouldn't! I mean it just brings down the entire idea of the co-op... I was in the beauty section where they also have essential oils and vitamins looking for a few different items that would best help me. There were two employees there and in the entire 20 minutes that I spent circling looking for products to purchase they carried on a conversation and not ONCE did any of them bother to ask if I needed help! Don't believe me??? I recorded them and they had no idea because they were too busy into their conversation. I posted the video. I am sorry this is just absolutely unacceptable. For the reasons that I love this place I will keep shopping here... But for the reason that I hate it I will make my trips shorter and farther apart... read more

Been shopping here for years, but the customer service has me rethinking that. I read the return policy thoroughly, and nowhere does it state that the item to be returned must be unopened. I had exactly one scoop of a house-brand protein powder, out of a container I spent $24.99 on, and it was disgusting. Undrinkable. So... I read the receipt and was relieved when it said I could return items within 14 days with a receipt. They told me no because it was open, and I told them they need to have that part printed on the receipt. I was denied the return. I told them to throw the product away because it's gross, and now I'm $25 poorer. Thought about becoming a member, and now I won't. read more

I cancelled my membership at this store because on multiple occasions I received an unacceptable level of customer service. There were several instances that led to me resigning my membership. The first of which is an incident where I was told I would not be able to receive my membership benefits on my next trip without my card despite having ID. I explained that my child had emptied my wallet and that I had not lost the card - it was just temporarily misplaced. The supervisor was unwavering in his position and had an extremely unfriendly disposition. The final incident was one in which they had an incorrect sign on lettuce. The difference in price was two dollars. The cashier, her supervisor, and the manager all gave me a hard time about a sign that they all agreed was in front of the lettuce that a young man in produce handed to me as the sale item. He even confirmed this. This entire ordeal went on for over 30 minutes about two dollars. At this point, I did the majority of my shopping in this overpriced store and that was the last time. I went there once and showed them corn that was rotting so they pulled it off the shelf. I went back the next day and it was back on the shelf with the tops cut off. Their produce sucks. I once asked for an empty deli container so that I could give my child a portion of whatever it was that I purchased and the deli clerk refused. Are they rationing out deli containers? There is no logical explaination as to why she could not have granted that simple request other than the fact that it is apparent that this store is extremely lacking in customer service training. This is a great place to shop. You don't have to be a member. It's also a good place to visit. Make a day of it. It's on a bustling road with a library branch down the street. There are bagel shops, sushi joints, Mexican restaurants, and diners to eat in near by. I came to the coop to get a particular plant based permanent hair color in red. Red is hard to find. And in the commercial reds...very debilitating and my hair was thinning. I found an exquisite red here. I also got wonderful natural soaps I gave as a Christmas gift. Naturally, you can shop for food too. You can also browse. I did. I walked around the store looking at spices, and flours (many kinds) and rice, as well as a canned good aisle that could equal any grocery store. read more

Open till Midnight. What? What????? I don't live close enough to ever justify coming her all the time, especially since I live near so many other grocery stores, but it's great to know when I'm in a bind I can traipse on over because they're open till midnight!!! Oh, you work till midnight? Well go before work because they open at six!!!! So they are like, literally open 18 hours out of the day. It's nice because even though I'm near several 24 hour green markets I'm not near a store that has healthy packaged alternatives...at least not open until midnight. Funny thing is I never come for the produce, just packaged items and some of the beauty products. Some of the sections are lacking and I've come several times and either been ignored or passed up for another customer who just walked in front of me while I was asking an employee a question. Meh. Let me say that they sell rotten vegetables and leave the good once at the basement. You have to almost beg them to get you something from down stairs. I stopped coming since I had food poisoning from the rotten vegetables. Be very careful . They say they care about the Community yet no body cares to take a look at the moldy and old stuff they sell. Unfortunately there aren't many solid grocery options in the neighborhood and I often find myself stopping in for last minute ingredients. As many other reviewers have mentioned this place has its ups and downs. Pros: Their selection of vegetarian/vegan meat substitutes is pretty robust and for the most part reasonably priced. They offer locally baked pita bread as well which are delicious and fresh. I've stopped by their juice stand once before and it was solid. The pricing is on par with standard NYC smoothie joints and they offer a variety of pressed vegetable drinks if you want to feel really healthy. Cons: The veggie pricing. While I understand paying a premium for organic goods, some of their pricing is outright ridiculous. I've paid $8 for a small eggplant (the price wasn't listed) only to find out the veggie stand a half mile away sold the same sized eggplant for $2. Steer clear of the jarred peanut/almond butter selection as well. They'll charge ya upwards of $11 for a jar that you can find elsewhere for half the price. As other reviewers have mentioned the staff could desperately use some basic customer service training. But as someone who typically pops in and out for small things here and there, the hospitality isn't a top concern of mine. read more
