The staff here are absolutely amazing. I was attempting a DIY upholstery project and I came here to get the materials I needed and the staff went above and beyond what I expected of them to. I had a piece of plywood that I needed to be cut into a circle. I asked the staff at Katz's where I could get that done, despite not being a workshop and not offering that service, they cut it for me - at no charge. Also, the foam I purchased was so well priced, great value for money. The staff were so helpful and kind to my novice self, which I really appreciated. I cannot recommend Katz's highly enough. I have an IKEA couch that is no longer sold and after 13 years it was in dire need of a refresh. The style and convenience of this couch is hard to match and I don't want to give up washable covers since I have littles. Enter: Katz! I have passed by this unassuming storefront for years and am SO glad I walked in to ask about cushion replacements. In less than 5 minutes I was given options for refreshing my cushions and a super reasonable and affordable price. I opted for new foam cushions and then received a call 48hrs later that they were ready. Picked them up, paid (in cash, FYI) and had them on my couch in 20mins. I have been recently initiated into the world of upholstering via a night school class. This is becoming my new way to relax. Nothing like pulling out fifteen million staples and tacks to rid oneself of stress. Also, my right arm is beginning to look like post-spinach Popyele's. After an invigorating trip to Fabric Row, I found myself in need of supplies. Yes, I could order online. Two reasons not to: First, I am a fervent supporter of small businesses. Second, I wanted to see what I was buying as I'm new at all this. Thanks to the Fabric Row merchants and my dear South Philly Italian Aunt I learned Katz's is THE PLACE in Philly to go for the 'nuts and bolts' supplies (i.e. everything but the fabric). Anyone who's a native or near native of Philly understands with some bemusement how neighborhoods' 'naming' changes over the years. It's 'rebranding' and it's not a bad thing, just, well, confusing sometimes. For instance, newcomers would say that Katz's is in Northern Liberties. To the old timers - i.e., all the merchants on the Row and the South Philly Aunt, this place is in North Philly. Understand, to old South Philadelphians, anything above Spring Garden is North Philly. Katz's definitely in the rehabilitated area of NoLibs, with many new developments happening all along 5th street. Being a business that has been there, well, almost forever, it's beginning to stick out a bit as a reminder of what the neighborhood used to be, before the Invasion of the Redevelopers. The storefront is nondescript, with an aging sign and not much else to announce there was a business and it was open. You might be fooled even to think the business had closed, leaving the sign behind. Coming inside, the place is a jumble of fabrics and foam and workers bustling about chattering in English and Spanish. They are quite pleasant to work with, if direct and to the point, and have a variety of qualities of product available. Don't expect Mr. Customer Service here. They are not salesmen, they are trade professionals. What I've found is that you get back what you give. I was kind. They were kind. Karma, people. Bonus: they do deals on end runs. Need just a yard of high quality medium density foam? No problem. I happily worked with one of the guys to acquire all I needed, and he very kindly helped carry it out to my car for me. FYI They also do re-foaming - you bring in your tired old cushions, they will put in new foam for you. Great way to bring new life into your couch! Cash or check only, folks. They do not take credit or debit. This is another stalwart of Philadelphia's working past I am pleased to see surviving and thriving. They deliver an essential part of our history as a fabric center and are a great resource for our city. May they be there for a very, very long time. read more

They had exactly what I needed (1/4 inch foam) and it was reasonably priced. I would give it 4 stars if I didn't have to wait about 5 minutes to be acknowledged while the staff person looked through the caller ID on their business phone. It ended up being something to laugh at afterward, and he was friendly when he was finished with his task. A simple "hello, I'll be right with you"- goes a long way. The 2 guys who seemed to be working there did there best to avoid eye contact with me, made no attempt to greet me or let me know that they even knew I was there waiting. Update -- I used Katz Foam again last week (18April) and the did another great job. Santos and his team are life savers. This time, I had the cushions replaced. If you have a sofa that isn't old, but looks droopy because the manufacturer cushions are shot, go to Katz Foam! It's like getting a new sofa for a fraction of the cost. Awesome small business... !! This place saved my sofa! My little pup tore the Dacron off my cushions while the covers were in the wash.. Katz Foam did a great job of replacing the Dacron and resetting the cushion covers for me. Their prices are reasonable and the customer service is really great. If you have a cushion related problem, check these guys out. This is the best place to get foam for chairs, beds, bench cushions etc. Pricing is good. Staff is awesome!!! I own a fabric/upholstery workroom. I had several pieces of foam to get for a bed, chair and bench cushions. They gave me advice on quality, thickness and density that really helped my projects turn out great! They measured and cut the pieces to exact measurements and even glued some of the pieces together for me. Have shopped other places for foam. They have much higher prices and not nearly as helpful! I live close enough to pick up in store but I know they do ship. read more

It gave me a chance to look around. Purchased a couple spools of upholstery thread and a 25 yd roll of cording. The price was good. I went there with a friend to buy foam for two projects. We wanted to buy foam for a dog bed project. We showed him what we were looking to do and he advised us against moving forward with the project because the fabric wasn't right for it. His suggestion was the right one. He could have just sold us the foam knowing it wouldn't work out how we wanted it to. I value that kind of honesty. The second project was to make a window seat pad. He cut the foam for us with the measurements we brought. He was funny, helpful, fast AND the cost was very reasonable. All in all - great service. I'd highly recommend Katz'. read more

We got great service from Katz right before xmas my boyfriend took the cushion for our couch in to get the foam replaced. It must have been work down to about 1 inch thick. They replaced it on the spot! added a piece of foam that is about 5 inches thick and my couch has never been more comfortable. The place was dirty. I bought some good quality foam that had grimy edges. I let it go because I knew it would get cut off..but, really? The staff was very nice but didn't instill confidence. I wouldn't buy fabric there - that's for sure. Unless you live in that neighborhood, go to fabric row. You won't spend that much more and it's cleaner. read more

I am so glad I found this place! It was busy when I came in with no appointment but they found a way to take time and help me out! I have never reupholstered chairs like this or anything like this and Santos was awesome dealing with me! He could have easily just sold me foam but he took the time to listen to what I was trying to do, look at the pictures and materials I brought in and get all the materials I needed and explained step by step what I needed to do! This place is a jewel that more people should be aware of. The store is located in Northern Liberties. They have so many different items in the store I could have used. I wish I knew about it a long time ago. I went there to have some cushions replace. I also bought a mattress for my spare bedroom. They replaced it quickly, while I waited. The service was excellent, the prices were unbelievably reasonable, and the end result was amazing. It feels like I have a brand new couch. The mattress is great. It's more comfortable than a futon and less expensive than going to a mattress store. I'd recommend this place highly. read more

A work of art by true craftsmen. I have an imported leather sofa and loveseat from Italy that's about 15 years old. The seat and arm cushions are sagging. They have curves and angles that most upolstery shop machines cannot navigate. Two Saturdays ago I take my cushions to get the opposite of liposuction. Lol. My first stop in Pennsauken was extremely educational as they we very helpful in demonstrating why they couldn't cut new foam for my angled cushions. They recommended a boat seat fabricator. I went there but they said they're machine only cuts straight too. But they were nice enough to direct me to Katz on N. 5th in Philly. I hit the jackpot! The new foam for my cushions and arm rests are nothing short of perfect.Thank you to the staff and I will see you next week with my matching sofa cushions. read more

Fair prices and knowledgable staff.
