Honestly cannot believe it was my first time here! What an amazing establishment in Philadelphia…read more The Resource Exchange is located inside of a large warehouse with maker spaces and other establishments. You can't miss the HUGE colorful mural on the outside in the parking lot, but the RE itself is on the right side. Conveniently located by a 3 bus stop as well. I was in the market for some postcards and other papercraft supplies and brought some scrapbook paper I knew I wouldn't use with me to donate as well. The staff was very nice and organized. After seeing the true breadth of all of the various materials sold at the RE, I will definitely bring more miscellaneous craft stuff with me to donate next time. Have to make room for new stuff! I was able to purchase some postcards (they were 50 cents each or 3 for $1), a container to hold some of my other materials, and a set of Dublin stickers, all for $15 flat. Cannot stress enough how AFFORDABLE stuff is. In general I would say go in to look around and not want anything too specific, especially on a busy day like a Saturday, because it was a bit crowded. But they had materials truly for all typees of crafts: fabric, knitting, sewing, painting, papercrafts, jewelry, woodworking... as well as larger materials. Really affordable and hope to get the word out about this place! There are two gender-neutral restrooms located in the lobby of the building as well as part of the shared space.

I've taken two classes there now, sewing 101 and quilting. Taught by different instructors, both so excellent at de-coding patterns and supporting you each step of the way! Extra shout out to Emily reaching quilting 101, who goes above and beyond to make sure that 6-9pm is still a productive learning time, assigning easy homework we can do independently, and literally offering to lend me a sewing machine for home because I'm so behind. I look forward to taking more of their classes! From bras to jackets, they have weeks-long series as well as one days.

I decided this was the year I was going to learn how to use it and I signed up for sewing 101. I take a Saturday morning class with Lara and I cannot say enough good things. They make it so easy to follow along, answer every question (even when you ask the same thing 3 different times) are so patient! I was even able to bring in my Grandmother's machine and Lara helped me get it set up and recommended a few pieces and tweaks. I can't wait to continue my sowing journey at Butcher's Sew Shop and am excited for what I make nex!

Ah, Maxie's Daughter. What a fun jumble of a place…read more This is another of the venerable fabric merchants on Philadelphia's storied Fabric Row, although originally they were over on 9th, part of that lovable jumble called the Italian Market, known then as Max Wilk Fabrics. Max Wilk was where my grandmother got the fabric used to make my christening gown. In the early 90s they moved over to 4th Street and renamed themselves "Maxie's Daughter" as the 4th generation - indeed, Max's daughter and family - took over. Maxie's, like many fabric merchants on the row, has tons of end-run bolts as well as stock fabric. The right half of the store is dedicated to upholstery and drapery fabric, while the left side is clothing everything from linen to lace to silk. It's a jumble, but not as cramped feeling as some others, just as long as you don't mind scooting sideways down the aisles. The ladies clearly run the show here, and boy to they know their stuff. They also are not afraid to cut deals even on end-run bolts. "I'll give it to you for $10 a yard if you take the whole bolt". Really? This is $75 a yard stuff. You got it! They are fun and knowledgable and kind in the gruff way of South Philly. No, they're not polished or sophisticated. You want that? There are places for you. This is not one of them. It's for the fabric lover who doesn't mind the jumble and the phones and the little dogs and the calls of "Irving! Where are the scissors?!" "Irving! Can you get that bolt from the basement?" "Irving, come help lift this!". Irving, by the way, gets a gold star for life being the sole gentleman amongst these very bossy ladies. :)
