I generally only do Yelp reviews for outlets that are amazing or woeful. In my opinion Baldwin's is woeful, perhaps the worst retailer I have ever encountered. So here's the deal: he somehow got Best of Philly a couple of years ago. I like nice stuff, so I took a couple of suits to him for tailoring. Then the chaos started. So I bought two new suits and took them to him for tailoring. I called the shop, talked to Larnell, and he set up an appointment for the next day with a promise of delivery one week later. So far, not so bad. Then the rest happened... I showed up for that appointment... and the shop was closed, door locked, lights off, no tailor. I called him on his cell phone given to me by an associate of his, and he said he'd be there in an hour or two, so I went back and got fitted a couple of hours later. Frustrating, but okay. He promised delivery on the two suits 7 days later. So I showed up 7 days later to pick up. Store was closed. Called him on his cell phone again to emphasize that I needed my suits (one of them was for my wedding!), and he told me he was on vacation several states away. When I emphasized he promised delivery on that day he had one of his employees come open the shop several hours later so I could pick up the suit. And guess what??? No work had been done on the suits. Nothing at all. So then he promised it would be done the day he got back from vacation, which was a Tuesday. But guess what, it wasn't! I managed to get one suit back, and he promised the other suit would be ready the next day, Wednesday. So I showed up more than two weeks later and... yes... the suit still wasn't done. So I told him, that's it, give me my suit and we're done. And then the most shocking part... he refused to give me the suit back, literally yelling at me. He missed the fitting appointment, missed the pickup appointment, failed to do the work on time and failed again to do the work on the secondary schedule, and then refused to give me my suit back. That sounds a little crazy, and is also 100% true. So that's my review. I wanted to love the place. It didn't work out that way. What a disaster. read more

Great service fair price. Went in to drop off a leather jacket for a zipper repair the day after Christmas. Told me it would probably be about three weeks. He called me up later that day to say he had a zipper in stock and the repair was done. You can't even tell it was ever broken. Looks like new, in fact it's probably better than new! Excellent, excellent, and honest. Did a wonderful job of replacing a zipper on a Jones of NY jacket at a more than reasonable price. Also, I brought a second jacket for zipper repair and the proprietor showed me that the zipper was not the main issue and did not need repair. As a super bonus, the staff is very nice and courteous. I had some work done on a leather jacket here and it looked like it was done by someone who must have had their eyes closed while laying the stitches. In addition, it was completed about a week later than quoted.. I've attached two pictures. Problem is.. this can't be undone. Once you put holes in leather, it's permanent. $300 jacket that I've had for 10 years is now ruined. Baldwin and crew are nice people but the work is not good. Since no one else in the city is willing to alter leather, I'd look online for places to send your leather garments. read more

Friendly and knowledgable employees. Horrible attention to detail. I took in a calfskin Schott jacket to get the sleeves slimmed and shortened. A bit later, there was a miscommunication, and I was told the jacket was ready when it wasn't. The staff were apologetic and friendly, even fixing up a hole in my backpack for free while I waited. It went downhill from there. When I got my jacket, the lining was poking out, the cuffs were unfinished, and there were loose seams on one arm. They apologized, saying those were all careless mistakes. They went back to fix it. This time, my jacket had multiple puncture holes (from failed attempts), a misshapen sleeve opening, and an unfinished cuff. Apparently their machines can't handle thicker leathers. This wasn't, of course, mentioned to me before they left lines of holes in my jacket. I tried to be diplomatic, acknowledging that they'd tried, and that it was indeed thick leather. But the on top of the holes and questionable alterations, one sleeve was still unfinished. I was accused of "looking for reasons to complain." They then referred me to a shoe repair shop. I'm legitimately bummed to leave a bad review. Everyone was nice -- at first. And it's great that Baldwin seems to be a loved local institution. Others' experiences have obviously varied. But the whole point of finding good leather workers is that you're paying more for quality work on an unforgiving material. The mistakes on my jacket can't be repaired. Nobody wants holes or crooked, uneven stitching -- especially on leather. But when you spending over $100 for work on a $700+ item, and the business shrugs it off? Unacceptable. Take your leathers elsewhere. read more

I have been a this customer of your stores for the past 15 years, this is the 3rd time and again received poor service at your store which is one of the main reasons I only buy fabric and not get things altered at your store. But to my surprise, on the date of 10Th. January, 2017, I was at the receiving end of some very poor service at your store. I have discovered the following problem with the work you have done for me: Alterations is a week over due I brought in my vest on the 2nd you told me it would be done on the 6th, here it is the 10th and it's still being worked on. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says that reasonable care and skill must be used while working. In my opinion, you did not use reasonable care and skill when you carried out this work and you have broken your contract with me. Much respect to Mr. Baldwin. He got me out of a sartorial jam. I was looking all over for different materials and he had exactly what I needed here. And not only THAT, I showed up at a good time and got my tailoring done right then and there. After a slight mishap in an otherwise stellar job, I had to return another day for my pick-up. I appreciate that old school professionalism. As far as selection goes Baldwin has a wide variety. Gabardine, gingham, pique cotton, tweed, seersucker, leather, suede, vinyl, corduroy, mudcloth, cashmere, skins, and the list goes on. There's no doubt that I'll be back. I brought in my leather jacket that needed the zipper replaced, charged me $35 paid in advance. First it was not done by the time they promised. When it was finished I went to pick it up, tried the zipper and realized they had not replaced the zipper! They had tried to pull a fast one on me. They were embarrassed that they got caught, said they would take care of it, come back in an hour. Took 1 1/2 hours but it was done, but the jacket was covered in scratches! Most they were able to buff out but one of the scratches was a cut! They tried to hide it but it is still there right in front! They offer to give me a discount on another alteration! BEWARE. I needed alterations on a vinyl fabric bodysuit. I called Baldwin's and they told me to bring it in on a Saturday, which I did. The gentleman who assisted me with very knowledgeable and helped determine the best way to make the piece fit me better. He was very attentive and personable. I asked if it could be done by the following Thursday and was told it could be. I received a call on Monday that it was completed. I could only come after work and Baldwin's stayed open late so that I could pick-up my suit. The alteration was flawless and need a bit more adjustment, which they did within 5 minutes while I was still in the store. You can find leather if you need it same day and can' wait for a shipment to reach you. but their pricing is ridiculous. everything they offer, i have found elsewhere for half the price they charge at Baldwin's or even less. they do have a variety of colors, but not much stock of each. they tried to sell me damaged leather at full price. This is THE place to go. The lining of my leather coat was badly frayed. Several places refused to fix it. Mr. Baldwin immediately took it on without hesitation. He replaced the frayed silk with attractive, heavier-duty material with a cool pattern. He went to the trouble to remove the designer's label from the old silk and reattach it to the new one. Not only was the price right, but he did it that very afternoon! To top it off, the store is full of friendly staff and customers. My coat looks great. I'll go back for sure. Wandered into this shop looking for fabric to line a fancy dress. Although they seem to specialize in fabric for men's suits, they had a small but good quality selection of silks. This place is worth the drive to Phila and the guy who does the repair work, Larnell, is a true gentleman, so nice and so reasonable- He repaired a ripped heavy leather and fur coat for me and I can't even tell it was damaged. I recently had leather cushions fabricated at Baldwin leather. Mr. Baldwin assured me that it would only take a few weeks for the order to be completed. This included ordering the leather and fabrication. I thought that to be too quick a turn-around time but he is the professional. After the third week I called for an update. He stated that the leather skins had to be sent back because the coloring was not quite right. The truth is he ordered the wrong amount. I personally brought the cushions in so he would measure correctly and order the correct amount I believe he was 20 sq. Feet shorti (a he is the professional). The cushions were finally done approximately 6 weeks later. The cushions were nicely done but if I hadn't have been persist I would probably still be waiting (phone communication is lacking by him). Because he miscalculated the amount of leather to be used he charged an additional $200.00 + and ordered the leather without getting my approval!!!! He would not adhere to his original contracted price leaving me to pay the additional money or no cushions!!! Now I will have to sue him for the breech of contract! What a nightmare!!! read more
