Anecdote/Example time: My partner has had many teeth degrade due to depression/fear of dentists, so much so that another dentist told her she'd lose all her teeth. However, when my partner was in incredible tooth pain, we went to Downtown Dental Care as it was recommended by One Iowa. We explained that she had dental anxiety, and when we arrived, everyone (from Joni at the front desk to Dr. Riley himself) was kind, understanding, and patient with my partner. No guilt or blame were given for the state of her teeth. There was only a focus on "get you better" and looking to the future-- no shame or chiding! Prodecures were explained to us step-by-step, all matter of fact without judgement. All tooth care has been presented with options and explanations of each option for us, like the cost physically vs financially for a root canal vs a tooth pulling. Not only have we been given options for treatment, but when Dr. Riley cannot do something himself (either due to his practice (like pulling teeth) or due to cost (root canal), he recommends the best place to go- a surgeon who also understands dental anxiety, or Iowa City Dentistry School for cost. One additional thing to add: My partner has Delta Dental, and the staff, hygienists, and Dr. Riley, have all helped her navigate her insurance and pointed out the next steps she needs to do when they cannot do something for her. It is incredible, personal care. Needless to say, despite my partner's dentist anxiety, she loves the team at Downtown Dental Care!

Just from a phone call, I would NEVER go here. The receptionist was rude, condescending and…read moreunprofessional. It was simple. My insurance won't cover my deep cleaning with numbing with my regular dentist. My regular dentist told me to give this clinic a call because they do. The receptionist kept saying "We don't have a periodontist." I asked her "Do you have a dentist for a deep cleaning with numbing?" She said "Well, yes, but we (and she sighed) don't have a periodontist." I don't need a periodontist. I don't need an implant, my gums and jaw are not weak. I called my regular dentist office back and was referred to a different office. I called the new office with no issue. They knew exactly what I needed. No muss no fuss. I really don't know what this lady's problem was, but she must really hate her job.

It was a herculean task to get him to communicate with the other professionals he referred me to. He delayed my treatment and wouldn't even say hello, whenever he had to interact with me (which were rare occasions). I assumed that he didn't realize the difficulty of the case, and knew he was probably not capable of doing the job. He could have just said so, instead of treating me in such an unethical, inhumane and humiliating fashion at the most vulnerable time in my life. His assistant probably noticed and attempted to make up for his rude and unprofessional behavior, and that was very appreciated (she is a sweetheart.) His hygienists are amazing and I am so thankful for them. Do us all a favor and retire, Dr. Margeas! You ARE NOT God's gift to dentistry, as you think you are. I went to God's gift to dentistry, and he is humble, kind, ethical, humane and probably one of the most competent REAL cosmetic dentists in the US ( Dr. Sam Sadati.) I have had a dental bridge for over 35 years, which that is relatively unheard of! I go there twice a year religiously and today I was there for a filling repair. Dr. Economos was great to work with and if I needed more work done I would definitely use him again! Thanks for being the BEST in town! The doctor took impressions of my mouth yesterday for both upper and lower partials. He used those…read moreold-fashioned metal trays with goop on them. When took the top mold, it did not hurt my mouth at all. However, when he took the bottom mold, he pressed down hard on the metal tray, and it hurt my gums badly on the right side of my mouth toward the front. As he was pressing down, it felt like my lower gums were being jabbed with a sharp knife. I was moaning badly, and he still kept pressing down hard. He might have used a tray too small for my lower jaw. They do not use the more modern and pain free method of taking digital impressions with a scanner (mouth camera) so don't ever have dental impressions done here. I called the woman at this office this morning and she acted stupid when I tried to explain how having this impression done on the lower part of mouth hurt me. She got snippy and called me a "smart alec". I suspect they might be running a butcher shop here with quacks who enjoy inflicting pain upon patients. I have to go back on the 20th of this mouth to have my new partials fitted and out in. I told the woman over the telephone that I hope that experience will be less unpleasant for me than the impression taking was. She claimed that patients normally don't feel pain when fitted for dentures. The woman over the telephone didn't even know what "digital impressions" were.
