We recently hosted a birthday party at Flipper McCoy's in Virginia Beach and overall had a really fun and positive experience. The biggest downside was the heat, especially upstairs in the laser tag area. It was uncomfortably hot and could definitely use better ventilation. The party room itself is on the smaller side and felt very cramped (only accommodates 12 bodies comfortably) and was warm too. The arcade noise carries in even with the door closed as the walls don't go up to the ceiling, but noise is expected in an arcade setting. That said, there were a lot of thoughtful touches that really stood out. The party room was decorated well, with detailed under the sea murals on the wall, and the place settings were surprisingly nice with sturdy glowing plastic plates, cups, and neatly arranged silverware that matched the neon and black-light theme. It made it feel more put-together than typical party setups. (Even though I decorated with my own decorations and partyware, as the birthday girl had a particular theme she wanted.)Our party attendant made it a point to check in to empty trash and make sure everything was going smoothly. One of the most appreciated features was that parents could watch the laser tag games from downstairs on the screens, and a few were even allowed to jump in and play with their kids at no extra charge, which was awesome. The kids absolutely loved the variety of arcade games and had a blast. Party pricing and packages were comparable to other venues, with three options to choose from, and we really liked being able to bring our own food and drinks. They were also very accommodating, since there wasn't a party before ours, they let us in early to decorate at no extra cost, and they didn't rush us out at the end, only asking for 30 minutes to reset the room for the next group. That flexibility made a huge difference, especially since we had the largest party package with multiple laser tag rounds plus arcade time, cake, and food. Parking was a bit tricky, but that was expected at the oceanfront (and we were glad it was the off-season). Most importantly, the kids had an amazing time and the birthday girl is already asking to have another party there, which says it all. A FUN venue with great staff and party flexibility, just be prepared for the heat, especially upstairs, the typical arcade noise (even in the party room) and the frustration of VB Oceanfront parking, as there isn't dedicated parking for the venue. read more

Pretty decent arcade on the boardwalk in terms of games and cleanliness. But pretty pricey. Games averaged $1.25, and you have to buy a card to add money to and they charge $1.25 or 1.50 for the card. So needless to say it didn't take long to spend our $20. Maybe that is the reason we were the only folks in the arcade. We ended up with enough tickets to get 6 pieces of "penny candy". So I'd say skip the arcade and take your kiddo to the dollar store and let them come out with 5 or 10 dollars worth of stuff. Also we paid $12 to park in the lot behind the arcade. So a costly 15 minute experience. read more

This arcade switched to a card system some years ago and sadly can't be trusted. Games were both over charging and under charging. This is something that may be either an intentional or nonintentional system of skimming money from distracted and over stimulated parents. Several dollar games were over charging, and some other games were under charging. When I brought it to the attention of the owners I was told about how many tickets I had, this was not what I was asking about. I was asking about what was going on with their system to where the price advertised and the priced charged where not aligned. My suggestion if this is not intentional would be for the business to reconsider using the third-party card service. Sadly, the majority of parents that go here load a card and give it to a child, and let's face no kid no matter how smart is going to be able to do math in an arcade like Flippers. I'm not sure if this is just a weak spot in business management or a completely intentional action to exploit the American tourist. I had photos of the games over charging me and the man I spoke with was not addressing the issue. The American Arcade is a fading experience that many kids today won't get the luxury of experiencing it in all its glory. Encouraging those in the arcade business to consider protecting the traditional aesthetic of arcades through the of physical tickets and actual money. read more

A very good experience at Flipper McCoy's. There is a wide variety of games for young and older kids. Unlike some arcades, this one has a good mix of old school redemption arcade games like skeeball, rifle shooting, and air hockey, and newer, interactive video games like first-shooter games and arcade racing games. They do have laser tag, pop-a-shot, and your typical arcade games where you play to redeem tickets or instant prizes from toy stations. The restroom is located in the center of the main arcade room which strategically seems like a safe place to situate restrooms in a public place for kids. Like most modern arcades, this one has a prize station where you can redeem earned tickets for prizes. In typical arcade fashion, prizes range from the standard "participation" prizes such as penny candies and small toys to the seemingly unattainable prizes which seem only are achievable by playing games for hours and even days on end. Really fun. Arcade has two halves. The VR rides are very neat, but the headsets need to be updated. Some of us have large heads and need bigger straps or more secure fittings that don't take 45 minutes to put on. Only one pool table, but at least it's the kind where the balls roll on through and don't just hang in a leather sac for the next player to remove. Game cards are used for rewards and payment. So always keep an eye on the amount, using the handy card checking machines throughout the facility. There are lots of moving lights, blacklight effects, and loud noises, so if you have any sensory issues, please use discretion and consider these elements before you decide to pay a visit. The prizes are typical arcade fare. Nothing too exciting, but at least you can get some silly toys or a quick bite of candy! Overall, it is a pretty cool place to check out every now and then. But the selection would get tiresome if one were to stop by frequently. read more

Don't waste your money or time. The website doesn't work - the staff is rude, unhelpful and downright nasty. Due to their faulty website the birthday party option doesn't work. When I called to speak with someone I got the stankest attitude from a female who showed no interest in helping us learn about the party packages. I guess calling about the party inconveniences her at work. IDK. I still can't believe after her running thru the options and then asking her to repeat and slow down a bit I was hung up on while asking a question. Called back and the male that picked up didn't acknowledge or apologize for the horrible service. It always starts from the top. Don't waste your time. Only a good business deserves my hard earned money. I would be embarrassed to bring my daughter and her friends to place that handles children but can't speak professionally to adults over the phone. read more

If you or your loved ones are in VA Beach and are looking to spend a little time in an arcade, you should definitely opt for Flipper McCoy's. My boyfriend and I first went to another, smaller arcade on the oceanfront, where we had a good time. However, we then went up the street a few blocks to Flipper McCoy's and--with its better ticketing system and larger game selection--simply had a better time. Though both arcades (like all...) are pricy, we told ourselves "we're on vacation!" and decided to go for it. And, we're glad we did! Here, games don't show as costing credits but, rather, and average $1.25 from on your game card. You first have to buy ($1) and load (any amount) a game card with as much or as little money as you want before you can play. Then, as you go around, you swipe your card until it's empty / time to reload. This arcade had many games to choose from, spread out in two different rooms and extending to the back of the building. I was especially happy about Doodle Jump, skeeball, and coin pusher; my boyfriend was excited about Guitar Hero, basketball, and ball drop. There was something for everyone, any age. There were kids, parents, adolescents, 20-somethings--you name it. We were all enjoying ourselves. When it came time "cash out," we were met with a very friendly man at the prize counter. They have a great system here, where the attendants total up your tickets, you point to what you want, they scan a barcode, and your remaining points are automatically shown on a TV screen above. No old-school calculator! They had everything from candy to electronics. We opted for candy, a bouncy ball, a slinky, etc. A bunch of small stuff that totaled up to our ticket earnings. In an hour or so, we spent a little more than $50 together (two people). It would certainly have been (too) easy to spend more money, though--so be careful! :-) read more

Great beach arcade! This was a return visit, because we had a good time last trip. It's a large arcade with electronic cards and tickets, like most modern arcades. I loaded $20 each for my girls and they played for over an hour. They have a great assortment of games. Lots of modern family friendly games like D&B (e.g., card pushers, Monopoly, shark game, knock the clowns), skee ball, mostly $1 each. They also have a bunch of retro games, like pac man, galaga, Donkey Kong for like $.50 and ~5 or 6 pinball machines. The have two pool tables ($2/game). They have a play to win candy crane with real candy (Kit Kat, Hershey) for $.50, so we may have had a candy appetizer before dinner. The prize selection is pretty good, although of course little kid focused. Lots of cute stuffed animals and candy. We earned a bunch of tickets (my girls can game) and left with a fairly big ball blaster. I'll take one good item any day over a bunch of plastic junk. The staff was friendly and the place was well maintained. We encountered zero broken games and one employee even cleaned pool balls while we were there, impressive. Nice to see some of the classic arcade games that still play for only a quarter. I used to be pretty good at Galaga and Ms. Pac Man and even Donkey Kong. I guess my reflexes aren't what they used to be, since a decade *cough* or two *cough* has passed since I played them with my allowance. Shoot 'em up games, joystick games, even the riding driving motorcycle games are here. Not everything's a quarter, but they do run on quarters instead of silly tokens. Hooray for that. Flipper McCoy's is decently lit and has the usual Skeeball to get tickets and then turn in the tickets for some piece of cheap trinket. But that's the fun, right? read more

I got my "Geek" on and checked out Flipper McCoy's on a cool weekday Virginia Beach morning. With the tourist departing the beach Atlantic Ave. was dead city. It was quite a strange sight to see for the most part senior citizens meandering the sidewalks. This was my first visit to Flippers, I had no idea what to expect. Located around 20th and Atlantic it's a pretty easy business to identify with it's large sign. The walks for the most part were clear of debris with minor cigarette butts. The exterior windows needed cleaned. The area is about as safe as any other place on the beach. The doors were ajar welcoming customers to come on in... which I did. I was greeted by a bank of Skee Ball games which I love. They had around six of them which is pretty good. I only see these in Chuckie Cheese which I try to avoid at all cost. What was not impressive was the carpeting which was in poor condition. There was also a slight funky odor that I could not put my nose on. I made my was around on the right side of the business and saw three pool tables there were in very good condition. Most impressive was the vintage 80's arcade games such as Pac Man, Mrs. Pac Man, Centipede and easily a dozen more. The prices for the games that I saw were $1, a little pricey. I then began to move in the center and saw a full wall of driving machines of all kinds. Everyone appeared to be in service. There is also an air hockey room with two tables. The service counter is located here and a woman was manning the area and able to answer questions. A couple of change machines are in the middle of the joint. There were a few customers, but for the most part the place was empty. I then made it to the very rear and thought this place is really expansive. There I found the shooting gallery which was down for maintenance, a man said it would be back up later today. This is also where you will find the half dozen vintage pin ball machines which were all in working order. I had my hopes on find my favorite all time machine that I played in 1980 "Time Warp". I have yet to find that machine any where since this time. Overall I would say Flippers is a pretty cool place and an awesome fit for the beach and families. I am not really sure how they sustain themselves well during the off season, but maybe the weekend crowds are big enough to bring in enough dough to keep the humming away. read more

On a burning hot night, the cold A/C immediately brought us in... But they have a lot of fun arcade games with relatively low prices (highest we saw was $1.00 per play). It was a week night so there were not many wait times for us. In the end, we won 1500 tickets and got a decent size stuffed animal for our dog to tear apart. read more

We love Flipper McCoys and recommend it to everyone who comes to visit the area! It's a super fun arcade spot by the Oceanfront. Great for a quick stop to cool off on a hot beach day which leads me to my favorite aspect of this place...the AC! The air conditioning is always on full blast when we come in and is extremely refreshing. There are lots of fun classic arcade games and they frequently change out games for new ones as well. Skeeball is our favorite. There is a fun collection of Pinball games in the right-hand room in the back. Plenty of prizes to choose from when you've collected some tickets. It's hard to find a good classic arcade these days. I really enjoyed my time here with my wife. We only spent $20 in coins and had a GREAT time!! The prices for the machines are a little high, but I can understand for the locale of Flipper McCoys. I do feel it would draw more people in if game prices weren't all mostly $1. Our $20 took us about an hour and half to spend. I thought the Dance Dance Revolution game was very well priced at $1 and they gave you three songs! That was pretty fair. I really liked the variety of the games there. The saloon shootout was pretty cool, I'd highly recommend giving that a shot! Well worth the dollar. My favorites so far were the Kung Fu Panda karate challenge "Dojo Mojo" and the game where you throw balls at standing clowns (pretty challenging). You'll spend less here and have more of a classic arcade atmosphere then you would at D&B. My only gripe here is that the Men's bathroom had a toilet in there, but no lock on the door to the outside world. read more

Thankfully my thoughts became a reality as I stumbled upon Flipper McCoys! I can sum up FMcC's with one word - nostalgia. When I was a kid there was nothing I loved more than a good arcade. Galaga, Pac-Man, and a cheesy shooting-gallery always put a smile on my face and a dent in my quarter collection. This establishment serves up all your old favorites and some newer games to appease your inner (and outer) child. Or course you can strive to build a mountain of tickets to exchange for prizes ranging from candy to MP3 players. There's also a range of non-ticket producing favorites like air-hockey, pinball, and classic arcade favorites. I have to stop in every time I walk by this little gem. It's one of the very few arcades at the oceanfront but it packs a punch. It's rather small & dated but that doesn't matter, it's an arcade... it's a place for fun stuff to be had by all! It offers a variety of things to do, to keep the young and old(ish) at heart entertained. Pool, air hockey, old school arcade games like pac-man & ninja turtles. Modern race car & bike racing games, hoops, ski ball and lots of the "clawing-grabby things" games, and little of everything in between. Lest I forget my main reason for occasioning this loud spot... The Shootout Saloon! Practice your marksmanship safely (relax, it's fake, no bullets) while being entertained by the movements & sounds of the targets one's shooting at! It has an old western saloon theme complete with an old dude on a rocking chair, a bar, a bunch of bottles & spit cans, lights, chests and a bunch of other silly things to shoot at! And in doing so, if you hit the targets each item displays a quirky reaction to your fantastic aim! I just love! It reminds me of the Shootouts that I used to visit as a youngster on the boardwalks of Wildwood, NJ. This is a much smaller version of those but non-the-less, still a hoot! No idea what spurred it on, but the kid was in arcade mood this morning. A quick Google search directed us here. I've lived in the area for about six years, been up and down the Atlantic Ave tourist strip from hell a good half a zillion times, but somehow never saw this place (or if I did, I never realized what I was missing). According to the nice lady at the counter, her father opened the place in 1973. Really, how am I the first to review? I don't get it. For anybody who grew up in the age of Tron, this place is a gem. They have a huge variety of old school video games (Dig Dug, 1943, Pole Position, Time Pilot, Ms PacMan, the aforementioned Tron and the like) as well as newer stuff. Lots of shooting games, including a huge saloon style laser target shooting gallery in the back that plays for tickets. One of the things I liked best was that you still use quarters, not tokens. And the majority of the games are still only a quarter. There are some that are 50 cents to a dollar. We had a great time killing an hour (and a few bucks) today, and are looking forward to a return visit. Great to know places like this are still around! read more

I came her with my boyfriend and we had a blast here. We were looking for a mini golf place and were over done by the heat, and walked in to avoid the heat. It was like heaven for both of us. We then proceeded to spend about 4 hours in total (two trips) in the arcade, playing Galaga, Ms.Pac-Man, Punch Out, The Simpsons, Tekken, Tron, Centipede on the arcade machines. All these were 25 cents to 50 cents per game. We also played the saloon styled shooting game together, I thought it was pretty neat and it was also 25 cents per round I think. They also have about 4 or 5 pinball machines lined up to play. They have an amazing DDR machine. It's only one machine with up to two players, but it has the song selections from about 4 different DDR machines compact into one. This was the most expensive game we played for $1 for one game (4 songs) and you could pick from any one of the games. We did a few SuperNova, SuperNova2, and Extreme. They also had a section for pool tables, a few games to win tickets for prizes, a selection of more recent shooting games, a boxing game (with pretty heavy gloves), and a few other things I can't remember. There were so many games, 4 hours wasn't enough for us to enjoy everything. Sadly we live in Maryland and only came down for a 2 day vacation. It will be some time before we can come back. read more

Some of the best arcade games from the 80s (Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Galaga) & 90s (TMNT, Simpsons, House of the Dead) all rolled into one package. Some machines only run you a quarter too....can't beat that. Easily the best arcade I've been to on the East Coast. Lots of racing games, skeeball, air hockey, and so much more for the kiddies who want to get tickets. it was raining the second day of our short long weekend trip and we couldn't go to the beach so we needed something to do. my fiance loves old video games and so the minute i stumbled upon flipper mccoys on a list of "rainy day" activities i knew it was the right choice. upon entering i was even more confident - they have a great mix of old time nostalgia with new exciting games and everything is nicely spaced and despite the rain it didn't get overly crowded. also, everything seemed to work! which i think is always half the struggle in small privately owned arcades like this. tbh the only complaint/comment i have is that it could have used a bar. we would have stayed twice as long and spent 3x as much if there was a bar. but i get it! good clean fun is important too and i'd definitely suggest anyone in the area visit. rain or shine. read more
