I adopted Helios - Cupid, and had a veterinarian visit last week with a thumbs up from the Marathon Veterinarian Hospital. Cupid is a loving, and a very happy bearded dragon. She sheds every other day and growing fast. I will need to do some research for a bigger home to order for her. She is in a 40 gallon aquarium at the mean time but, I want her to be happy in a big home. I do appreciated the good and friendly attitude of the SPCA people. I would like to express the disappointment in this shelter and its staff. I went to the shelter with my daughter that use to attend Key West College campus and she would frequently visit the shelter to be around the animals that would need human contact to be adopted at some point. My daughter has moved out of Key West and came for Christmas and wanted to visit the shelter. I went with her and immediately fell for a cat that was in the shelter for adoption. There are so many cats in that shelter that need a home. I called the following Monday excited to adopt this little furry baby. Instead I got Audrey an employee at the shelter giving me the worse attitude. I called around 11:30am they open at 10am. I can only imagine they were in the middle of cleaning up from the night before and was not pleased to assist someone on the phone on a Monday morning. The website my daughter went on to, to process the adoption, was a third party website. The link for application was not provided. I had to call the shelter for better direction on how to find this application. Audrey was upset and told me "Why am I even trying to adopt." I was taken back from that comment. I was only asking questions on how to proceed with adopting this little furry baby, and wanted to provide the proper paperwork. After I could not find this link Audrey was explaining while getting upset with me on the phone, I decided to just let her go and figure it out on my own. Unfortunately I could not find it. After I tried calling back my calls went unanswered until the 5th attempt and another person that already knew it was me calling, gave me the same attitude as her coworker. I then got a call back from Rachel that explained, I needed to go directly to their site Florida Keys SPCA, and i was able to find the document. I kindly told Rachel please let your coworkers know I was just excited to adopt the cat that came up to me and was very loving. I sent her a video of me and the cat at the shelter. After a day passes and I had already made plans to go into the shelter to meet with the cat as I was told, there is a process. Before that day was to come, Rachel calls me to tell me I was denied. What can possibly deny someone that wants to care for a sheltered cat that is amongst so many unadopted cats, just sitting in that facility every day and no real home. This is the worse place to adopt an animal in need. The staff is small town minded and if one person does not like you, only because I was excited about adopting my application got turned away. read more

Wonderful staff and clean facility. Lost our cat on Stock Island. Someone found him and brought him to FKSPCA... Once they scanned his chip, he was identified and we were called. We live 5 hours north yet immediately went to get our Kiddy. I can't thank these people enough, and wish to this day I knew who brought my boy in to express my gratitude. So glad to have this wonderful shelter in one of our favorite vacation sites. read more

Visiting key west and my heart breaks for all the stray cats - some are not in the best shape. I reported 1 that was not doing well. The animal control agent contracted me several times as we were working to locate. While this little guy is not easy to catch, it felt good that there were people out there trying to help. Good luck trying to adopt a pet from here. The woman in change of signing off on the adoption is a joke. She must interview you and she decides if you deserve to adopt the pet. She is not very nice, and she picks and chooses who will or will not get a pet. There is usually a waiting list of about 8 people per pet to get adopted and if you are in the military-forget it. Dogs are almost always adopted and this is a no kill facility. They appreciate donations, and you can go visit and pet the animals as often as you want. I have a love hate relationship with this facility. I love the pets, visiting, and donating, but I hate that it is so difficult to adopt a pet from there. read more

This is the finest adoption facility ever. It is a no-kill SPCA center and houses many types of pets, but mostly cats and dogs of course. I asked timidly if I could bring a dog I already had to see which dog he would get along with, and they said not only is it OK, but it is required! They were very helpful. The first dog was too timid, then they brought one out that was too aggressive, and as we were walking out a dog I thought too old we saw "Buster". I got him then at 1year3months, and have had him for ten years now. He taught himself frisbee catching and even entered into a disc dog event where he beat out some world champions! I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that the SPCA goes to great links to make sure the dog is a great fit. So many people get dogs as gifts, or on vacations, or travel too much etc and can't or won't take care of the little friends. I think of how many dogs they save by turning away poor adoption candidates in favor of really good dog parents. Thank goodness, and my dog really says thank goodness! If you see poor reviews from others, read deeper and you will see the truth. I will never "buy" a dog, I will only adopt them. Go get yourself a friend now! read more

4/18/2012 My dog recently was picked up by the Key West SPCA, lucky for me she was Micro chipped. (A dog identification method I highly recommend). My Dog doesn't wear a coll er so she had no other means of identification. After phoning the SPCA ,I was told I had to bring proof of shots and licenseure in order to get her. It was late in the day so unfortunately I had to leave her over night. The following day I went to pick up my little Shi-zu. My dog had acquired a $104 vet bill over night because she was taken to a local Vet for a bulging eye. My dog has glaucoma a chronic condition for which she is under Veterinary care. My dog was held "hostage " until I paid for Veterinary care she didn't need ,in addition to the $10 over night fee the $25 SPCA fee and license. I was told by the staff that I should be happy that they had my dog and took such good care of her! In the office I was belittled by staff for complaining about the Vet bill. Many dogs have chronic health conditions, my dog had no visible signs of Trauma and I was billed for unnecessary medical treatment. read more

We just adopted a pet, amazing staff and great service. Thats the upside. We came home with our puppy infested with Ticks. Idk about that place but I can only imagine how infested the dogs are that have been there for years, which is sad. It sucks that I have to write this kinda review since we love our new puppy etc but I love animals and I want them to be healthy and happy. Now we are turning our house upside down searching for ticks and we had to pull off at least 50 ticks off this poor puppy so far... :'(... But like I said, great staff and animals.... read more

Over the last 12 years I have lived in KW, i have adopted 2 dogs from this facility. Yes the lady who is in charge of adoptions is tough but she has a legitimate reason for this. Since this is a NO KILL FACILITY, and a very small city, you can imagine just how many animals come into this place. If you take the time to read up on how so many of the animals got here, you will find out that most of them ARE OWNER SURRENDER, usually because of the family/person being in the military or just people who live here for awhile and then have to leave because they cant afford it. If you aren't planning to live with the animal for a long time, or you're not sure what your living situation will be for the next few years, THEN YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS ADOPTING A PET IN THE FIRST PLACE. Try giving TWICE as much thought to having a pet as you do having children and I bet you will reconsider adopting a pet at all. I give this shelter 5 stars because they have always been there when I have needed them and they take the time to match the right pet with the right person. They also have FREE SPAY AND NEUTER CLINICS regularly. Thank You! read more

I fell in love with my little dog as soon as i saw him listed for adoption. I was interviewed and that was the first step. Next I had to being in my husband and two other small dog to they could see if everyone got along. We were approved that day and allowed to bring him home. He is the sweetest little dog. We were told to be careful because he had a history of running away. At first I only let him out on a leash, then I sat and watched the three of them play, He was so busy playing that he didn't even think about running away. The three of them sleep together with us in our bed. I am glad that the staff and volunteers took the time to see if we were all comparable. The staff there care about the pets in their care. You can tell by the way the pets react to the staff members. I was impressed with the building and the staff, And the time they take to see if the dog would be happy in his new home. I am so glad they allowed us to adopt. read more

Sad story... We are moving to Key West FL soon but we can not have our 2 BIG dogs with us. Thank god this shelter is so picky. In miami dade, anyone can walk out with a dog or cat....the people who work at this shelter are careful who they adopt out to. Military oftentimes are transferred, and cannot take a pet with them. That is a very good reason they do not want to adopt out to military families, the pets often times get returned or are abandoned. I adopted my first dog from this facility over three years ago, upon losing my two dogs within three weeks of each other to cancer. The people at this shelter allowed me to foster my first pup for the weekend to make sure it got along with my cat. That was a wonderful and heartwarming success story. We recently adopted another dog from the shelter, and because we are responsible pet owners, we had another successful adoption. These folks go out of their way to make certain the animal gets a good, stabile home environment and the staff is incredible. There should be this type of screening and interviews with pet adoptions. It could possibly prevent another abandoned or abused animal. read more
