Another pet rescue, but I had gone to just before showing up to the abandoned told me to drive over here and check it out that they have three rooms full of cats and they're very nice..... upon chilling up with both of my toddlers in tow, the woman at the front desk was not very friendly. Told me that I needed to have an appointment to see the cats didn't understand why I was there without an appointment. She told me I had to wait to speak to the person in charge of the cats for the day..... then two minutes later told me to go ahead and sign in and go into the room with all the cats.... As I made my way through the crowded messy hallway, a random girl stops me to tell me to make sure my kids don't pull ears or tails (OBVIOUSLY)- no hey I'm so and so blah blah..., then I put my hands on the door to walk in with both of my kids who are very excited and I'm told that I can't have my bag..... it's a DIAPER bag people for the toddlers that are in Tow with me..... I asked if she could hold it for the 10 minutes while we would be in the room and she looked at me like I had asked her in Chinese....at which point I said forget it, this is becoming a mission just to see a couple cats when I could just adopt one off the side of the road. Some of these rescues really have a stick up their ass and do not make the adoption process very excited for families. We won't be back and we'll spread the word. read more

What a wonderful place with truly dedicated people. The personnel consists of both part-time employees and volunteers who truly care for the well- being of the animals. They value each and every one as if it were their own. In this is a no kill center! They keep the animal until s/he is either fostered or adopted out. Honestly this place only wants to keep the cats for themselves. I have applied a couple of times and it looks like they do NOT want the cats adopted. They make it super difficult to adopt a cat and a lot of them have been here for years; there is one literally has been there for 11 years and make the process impossible. I hate that they are in charge of giving homes to these animals when all they do is reject everyone and anyone. 100% this place needs to go under inspection. This is animal neglect. read more

Extremely questionable practices here. It appears as if they have no intention of getting these animals adopted out or the intention is to make it as difficult as possible. I went there after looking on the website at their dogs and seeing how long many of these dogs have been at APR. When I walked in on 5/8/26 around opening time at noon and expressed I was interested in adopting a dog and asked if I could see the dogs I was immediately met with a nasty attitude by the woman in the office. She said we are way too busy here for you to walk or play with the dogs and went on with a list of how they can't be bothered with me. First of all, I never asked to walk or play with the dogs - I simply asked if I could see the dogs to understand if I was interested in one that you currently have to know if it made sense to go thru the application process. I'm a professional that works from home and would love to rescue a dog that needs a good home and I was spoken to like a child being scolded. This woman was disrespectful, condescending, and down right rude. The stench and filth in this office matched with the nasty difficult attitude immediately made sense as to why these dogs are not getting adopted out. I hope the board for this establishment understands they need major reform. I would be concerned as a donor to this establishment thinking my money was going to get these animals homes only to find out the difficulties the community faces when trying to adopt here. I walked in with hopes of adopting a dog but was automatically stereotyped, I tried to give a dog a forever home instead of a metal box for a home! We were told that we had to make an appointment with the foster family for one dog and that living in an apartment would not suitable for the dog. I refuse to jump through hoops and hurdles for an abandoned dog in a shelter. I understand why people choose dog breeders instead of adopting. The smell of the establishment is bad enough to make a maggot gag, the staff was very rude and snobby. I was ok with the fee for adopting but you can't adopt a dog from someone who has no interest in letting you adopt it. Ohh well I found a pure bred fur baby that hasn't been abused and through the system and who doesn't have abandonment issues. I have been volunteering walking small dogs at Abandoned Pet Rescue for about a year now. I love this place! I'm always treated respectfully, gratefully, and appreciatively. They have a veterinarian clinic on site. If you're interested in volunteering they have an orientation you can sign up for. Volunteering here is therapeutic. After writing an incredibly in depth application, I was contacted. In the phone call, they criticized my lack of employment. I am a student with two degrees, one being a Masters of Philosophy, and I am clearly able to care for any animal in terms of funding, vets, as well as deep love and intense affection and care. Today, I called them and asked when I might come see the cats. The woman who answered was abrupt and unkind. She said that it is very rare they allow animals to be adopted if someone is unemployed, and it varies. I thanked her for her time politely, but this is frankly ridiculous. While I realize that they have the best interest of the pets in mind, I offered many different ways to prove my finances and wrote an application that clearly stated how important animals are to me and how much I wished to dote upon the cat. It is an unjust decision and I am not pleased at all. I feel deeply saddened for these poor animals. Every animal deserves a loving, safe home, and the face that they didn't even ask me any positive questions, only insinuated that I would be unable to care for the cat, was unseemly and condescending. It is a disgrace, simply put. If you desire to adopt a pet, I implore you to look elsewhere. This organization clearly does not want their pets to be adopted, as I have seen in other reviews and can confirm myself. I hope that this place is shut down and these animals are allowed to go to other shelters where they will have a better chance of being adopted. read more

I hate to say this about any animal shelter and in fact I never have but I honestly truly feel this organization for whatever reason does not want to get their animals adopted. I will not share the details of my recent attempt to adopt a dog that has been sitting in a box here for nearly 6 months and still to this day. Whomever is charge "judging" the fate of these poor animals needs to be removed and retired from that position. I have already started an investigation, with the state and county of this facility. I have been checking the website for months and these dogs have not been homed and some are being exploited and put on display on instagram instead. Do not give your personal information to this company on their application as they will likely not release an animal to you. Hopefully this non-profit will be shut down and these animals will go to the county so they can be adopted in a timely manner to nice families who want to welcome a pet into their life and save than from a tiny caged prison sentence like abandoned pet rescue. read more

so i am currently searching for a cat or two to adopt / rescue. i visited the humane society and animal shelters but couldn't seem to find the right fit. i came across Abandoned Pet Rescue and decided to give it a shot. I was amazed by how sweet the cats were. we went into the cat room where there was an indoor and outdoor area filled with atleast 30-40 cats. i literally spent 3 hours here. just petting and playing with all the cats and actually finding 3 cats that i really liked. i made an appointment to come the next day to re visit and really try to narrow down my pick to one cat. next day, a sunday, i spent about 2 hours. i visited the other cat rooms but i didn't really connect with any of the cats, they were still sweet though. i went back to the original room that i was in from the day before and spent time with the 3 that i picked from the day before. easily, the 3 narrowed down to one cat, that cat being Murphy. i knew he was the one and i was so ready to take him home. Sheryl? Cheryl? idk how to spell her name. she came in and sat down with a clipboard and asked me questions. these questions were deep, i was honestly shocked. but what i started to notice was that she continued to ask me negative questions. there was no positive ones. it was like she was testing me and trying to get me to crack or break and answer something incorrectly. i was honest and straight up with her. i've had cats before, hell i've even had horses, dogs, goats, sheep, pigs, you name it. i have even participated in a 4 year veterinary program. i'm not an animal doctor by all means but i do know a good amount about animals especially cats. she kept asking if i was responsible and if i'd ever give up the cat. gave me scenarios that would make me give up the cat. my hunch is that she believes i'm too young, because i honestly felt disrespected. i am 22 years old, not a toddler. she left the room and i still continued to play with the cats. Murphy was by my side the entire time and i really wanted to take him home. so, i told Cheryl, sheryl, whatever. i told her my favorites and i was honestly stunned by her answers. she kept telling me all these bad things about the cats. like no positives was whatsoever. it was like she wanted me to yet again break or crack. she was testing me. she told me Murphy has diarrhea problems, like ok, i'll take care of it. she told me Wonder Woman was an escape artist. like ok, i'll make sure she's looked after and won't escape. also told me Huck wasn't friendly when he was actually enjoying being pet and sat by me for a while. i asked her how the adopting process would go, you know, that i'd like to adopt... considering there's adoptable animals here. she told me it was a big responsibility yet again. told me "people usually volunteer first". got it. i told her i'd be willing to come another time just to make sure. and she told me i'd need to come a "bunch more times". i told her i honestly would if i could. i told her i work until 5:30 and they close at 5. i would come every other day if i could. i was considering coming again on the weekend but that would just be to confirm the cat i wanted to adopt. but no, she wanted me to come merely every weekend. do i not have a life? i work every day, am i going to volunteer at an adoption center every single weekend just to be able to adopt a cat? you're kidding right? i feel extremely disrespected and honestly it was a big waste of time. i really enjoyed spending time with the cats but i came there to adopt, not volunteer. maybe if i was respected i'd volunteer but i was treated like a toddler. i appreciate that they are picky and want the cats to go to good homes but let me tell ya, they lost a good home from me. i guess that is why there is so many cats at the facility, Cheryl does not let them go. read more

Like every shelter they are full and cannot accommodate everyone who wants to give up a pet, and they DO make a difference in the lives of the pets that they do rescue. This is a "NO KILL" shelter for dogs and cats... strays, drop-offs or abandoned are all welcomed here and cared for without prejudice. I came here by searching online with intentions of rescuing/adopting a feline friend for life. Initially I thought it would be easy to decide but the moment I stepped into the room my heart dropped. Having been a previous owner of a feline I knew what it was to care for one but nothing prepared me for this. All eyes were on me and ears alert as if to say..."pick me"..."take me home". Well, it's been about 2 mos. with almost daily visits and coming to know many of them by their name and I still haven't decided. Many people are telling me to let them pick you but I can't take a dozen of them! I'm open to suggestions but meantime I'll keep visiting and helping this animal shelter. What an amazing rescue! I have 3 pets (all rescues), and this is the best rescue I have adopted from. I applied and went through a very thorough interview process with Cheryl. Once being approved I was able to go by to meet some of the adoptable pets. I wanted a kitten but to be sure we were prepared, we met with some of the adult cats as well. They make sure you are fully prepared for life as a pet parent. Having 2 other pets, I was definitely prepared and am used to just about everything that comes with being a pet mom :) Cheryl ended up matching us with the perfect kitten. She was very shy but playful. She is the perfect match for our crazy family. Almost 7 months with her being home with us, and I love her more and more every day. I'm forever grateful for this rescue and all they did for us. read more

I called this place to find a no kill shelter for a pregnant cat that was hanging around my yard. I was told they have over 200 cats..they can't take her in...I should then wait till she had the babies and then pay to have each one fixed. Then....the very nice lady that answered the phone hung up the phone on me after I told her I just spent 300.00 to have a stray baby fixed. I don't appreciate being hung up on. I would highly recommend this place for anyone interested in adopting a dog or a cat. The facility is kept clean and all of the animals such as cats are in rooms where they're always in contact with each other, so if you're interested in adopting more than one, you'll know that they've definitely gotten on well with each other. This place is also close to a brewery so if you'd like, after a long day of deciding which pet to get, you can go for a drink! Anyways, the adoption process went smoothly and they always make sure that your pet is in good hands and has been seen by a doctor before taking them home. I'm really happy with Windy and I hope with time she'll adapt to her new home. I highly encourage anyone who is serious about adopting an animal to come here. Taking home one cat is $60 and taking home two is $75. Fortunately this shelter is a no kill one so all of the animals here are in good hands. If you're also interested in volunteering, come here. This is a wonderful rescue. I adopted my cat here and spent a lot of time in the facility beforehand to make sure I found the perfect cat. Every time I visited, it was clear the cats were well cared for and happy. The cats were able to roam around and socialize, and some even had access to screened in outdoor patio space. Everyone who worked there was wonderful, especially Cheryl, who took a lot of her time to make sure I found the perfect forever friend. I volunteer & have a problem with the lady who gave 1 star. As soon as you walk in they greet you. Of course you can look at all the animals before deciding & it is a no kill shelter. You mostly smell disinfectant because they clean daily. I've never seen flies there unless one gets in the door when opened, same as in your home. read more

Came to drop off a kitten who's been in an abusive home before and was very aggressive and bit and attacked my friend. I thought since this is a no kill shelter they would help him with his behavior and could find a better home who has the patience for him. Instead the manager told my friend to keep the kitten and pretty much deal with it and when my friend refused she asked me if I could keep it and I told her my mom has cancer and allergies to cats and she said " she can take Benadryl" that was so rude and inconsiderate. We were really trying to find a good place for this poor animal and we were turned away and disrespected. Will never ever recommend this place and the manager was beyond rude with her dumb comments. read more

They are great!!! I rescued two sisters/kittens and didn't know what to do. They helped me with shots and teaching me what do to. They were full so could not take them (which I surely understand) but I will be happy to foster the as long as it takes. Wish I could remember everyone's names but they were ALL wonderful. This situation was out of my comfort zone and they came to my rescue with info. and the some of the things I needed for these two. Seemed clean and they were loaded with animals. Volunteering here is one of the best theraputic experiences in my time living in Fort Lauderdale. Marine (I know I spelled/said it wrong on purpose as an inside joke among friends) and her crew are connected with these beautiful abandoned souls that were given another chance to gain control. 2-300 cats in 3 varieties of rooms, and big/little dog rooms on the north and south corridors within the facility. This was a year ago and shame on me for not posting earlier. I had a wonderful experience there, I got to visit numerous cats, and decided between 2 of them, I visited a few more times just to spend time with them both. I choose Itsy Bitsy Spider (that's what they called her) I call her Bitzy Ann Cenci, she was a runt and had a 1/2 tail that was all crooked and bent, but so loveable, the other cat I didn't think would have a problem getting adopted because it was also lovable but with no noticeable flaws as you know sometimes people choose looks over personality (how dare they) so I went with the one I thought would have trouble getting a home. The staff was nothing but gracious to me and I was thrilled with the place so much I send donations to them as often as I can as I thought this underfunded place was simply fabulous! Yea for them! Honestly I wouldn't even give this place 1 star . So today I walked in and was interested in adopting a cat. I was in there for around 15 -20 minutes and was completely looked over multiple times. And not to mention it's smelled like dead animals in there bugs everywhere and flies just terrible!!!!! But I proceeded to over look all of that when the lady finally decided to look up from her phone she ask "do you need something?" I then replied with yes I was interested in seeing some cats I want to adopt one I just wanna see a few and decide. Then she looks me up and down and just says "we don't do that" so I responded saying so I have to adopt a cat without seeing it? And she says no your too young to adopt. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!! she never even asked me my age never asked for an ID Nothing she just looked me up and down and assumed for herself. Now I'm not a person to complain but this was a terrible experience I would 100 percent not recommend this place the manager is extremely rude and doesn't care why your there she can't even keep the place clean like right when u walk in there animal feces everywhere !!!!!! read more

My mom adopted three cats from here (at different time). Sadly, one was returned as the cat loved her life at the shelter, free to roam inside and out, and had a fear of petting. I haven't been here in years but have attended a few fundraisers. Each animal has a name, not a number or "hey you". The cats are free to roam indoors and outside in a screened area. They have all sorts of animals, or used to, such as iguanas, rabbits, cats and dogs. I appreciate that the animals are taken care of and are not punished. read more

There is a stray chihuahua in the neighborhood. We felt bad and searched and searched for a safe place for him. Finally , we found this place online. Upon arriving, my husband politely explained the situation. The man at the desk started to SCREAM " Get the hell out of here!!!!". There were people there filling out paperwork. I can understand if we "misunderstood" this for being a safe haven for dogs, but at least be professional and cordial. Stay FAR away from this place people!!!!! read more

My daughter picked this place to make a short film for her Bat Mitzvah as to how we should treat the creatures in our care. The Theatre behind them frequently trys to donate and sometimes if we can, I will donate. They truly care for all these animals and desperately need more volunteers. I have volunteered here off and on for a couple of years as a companion. I love the cat rooms, and so do the cats. There's always plenty of food and water. This place takes great care of their animals, and they're generally pretty nice to the people that come, but they do seem to get annoyed when people did not follow their guidelines. Visiting and adoption hours begin at 12 noon which honestly is not rocket science. They really do not have time to focus on potential adopters because they are busy conducting their business, which involves many facets in order to take care of the animals. I understand being pissed when you think that you're doing someone a favor and they're rude to you, but I think the person who left a one star review needs to get over themselves a little bit. And I would never do business with pet supermarket because they sell small animals that are bred in horrid conditions they don't completely deal with abandoned pets. If you give them or anyone that participates in this practice your money it will continue. So, go to abandon pet rescue, but don't show up an hour early and expect a red carpet to be rolled out to you! ;-) read more
