REVIEW #FLORIDA VETERINARY REFERRAL CENTER in ESTERO BEWARE OF THIS BUSINESS! Following is the story of our visit to the Florida Veterinary Referral Center in Estero! At 4:00 am Saturday, January 18th our dog vomited pieces of the plush toy he must have swallowed while playing tug of war with another dog at a friend's home. At 4:30 am Sunday, January 19th our pup ate grass and vomited several times. We immediately took him to a respected Emergency Vet close to our home in Naples Florida. The Naples emergency vet immediately suspected an intestinal obstruction and told us our dog may require emergency surgery that should be performed by a "Board Certified" Veterinary Surgeon. Since the Naples Vet did not have a "board-certified surgeon" available they recommended that we go to another emergency veterinarian. NO CHARGE. We then rushed our dog to the FLORIDA VETERINARIAN REFERRAL CENTER in Estero. As soon as we arrived at the FLORIDA VETERINARY REFERRAL CENTER (FVRC) we told the receptionist we were referred by another vet who said our dog may require emergency surgery and that we should request a "Board Certified Surgeon" if this potentially complicated operation was necessary. We reiterated the same information during FLORIDA VETERINARY REFERRAL CENTER'S triage. A FVRC veterinarian recommended an ultrasound prior to possible exploratory surgery. FLORIDA VETERINARY REFERRAL CENTER told both my wife and I the ultrasound result was "shadowy" therefore inconclusive and they said exploratory surgery was necessary! It was only after nearly $1000.00 of testing that Florida Veterinary Referral Center revealed they did not have a "Board Certified Surgeon" available! In fact, they said they would not have a Board Certified Surgeon available until two days later! Why did Florida Veterinary Referral Center waste valuable time and run expensive tests when they knew they did not have a surgeon with the qualifications we requested when we first arrived!? After Florida Veterinary Referral Center finally admitted they could not provide a surgeon with the qualifications we requested - we went to a third vet - in Fort Myers. The Fort Myers Vet suggested a CT scan or exploratory surgery. We opted for the CT scan first which revealed a small foreign object that they said should pass naturally. Which it did! Took my elderly 14 year old very arthritic dog here as a referral from my normal vet in an emergency situation. He wasnt eating and constantly throwing up. After 5 hours of testing still no answers. My pup had mobility issues and was pushed and pulled and handled roughly, at one point he was brought back into the room with his nose bleeding. I witnessed the vet tech not only get rude with me but yank the leash around my dogs neck so hard he slid on the floor, who knows what happens behind closed doors. After racking up my bill to $1400. And forcing us to take home prescription dog food and medication that was not needed or diagnosed properly. The vet never came back in the room with any answers as to what was going on with my dog and we recieved no after care instructions. The vet tech rushed us at the end and said several times she was tired and this was the end of her shift. Not my problem and obviously took her exhaustion out on my dog by manhandling him to the point where he couldn't walk for 2 days after, he never ate again , and as a result of whatever they did at this clinic I had to put him down on Tuesday because he never recovered from the pain he was put through at this vet. I had even called 2 times for after care and questions about his current condition only to recieve another vet tech reading me his test results off the computer and telling me there is no vet available to see him again. Any stars at all are just for the procedure because my dog has, as far as I know, successfully treated. Dr. Baez is apparently a credible pet physician but IMO sounds like one of the most unintelligible health professionals I've ever met. Aside from a sheer lack of affection for my dog, his attempt to clarify what my dogs operation entailed was the first of many red flags. All while speaking in generalizations and using acronyms that he assumes you're already familiar with, it took almost half an hour of his 'complimentary time' to explain what could have been said in 5 minutes. When you speak or have a question, he's very quick to fire back with a bunch of disingenuous "I understands" meanwhile interrupting you. I felt like I had to decipher the meaningful aspects of what he said about the procedure between a slew of eh's & uhh's. And it made his presentation even more distracting because he repeated himself a few times and spoke with his hands increasingly more after every question I asked. I'm sure that the best doctors/ veterinarians in the world aren't the best with people but our interaction happens to be part of the overall service and it was fundamentally, a very poor one. Forgive me if I'm wrong when I expect a DOCTOR to be able to be articulate in order to make at the very least, the total cost of EVERYTHING, comprehensible. Not to mention, victim of the old bait and switch with pricing. FVRC saved my dog's life. The knowledge of the staff quickly helped my dog to recover after he had been getting treated by his primary vet who was unable to provide adequate care. The supportive care was high quality, the staff was caring and the communication was excellent. Had I brought my dog here immediately after his incident, I would have avoided a week's worth of pain and further damage from which he had to recover. I was referred here by my vet at vca coral hospital due to a blood test that showed the red blood cells were dangerously low. We arrived and got placed in a room ,dr. Parra came in (the dr my vet consulted ) and he explained in very clear language what was going on and advised us what we should do . We followed his advice and admitted her for more tests and powerful drugs and a possible blood transfusion . She survived her transfusion and ended up needing another one. We have to go in frequently for a blood test and everyone we have dealt with has been great with us and our dog (xena). They explained how she reacted to them (she had to stay there 3 days) they learned how to deal with her that made us feel very comfortable . Unfortunately I had to bring my 13 WEEK-OLD puppy in when she appeared to be in pain without obvious cause. I was given apologies for the wait ( which wasn't a problem), as "they are very busy and have many sick animals in the back", which is understandable. This, in turn, led to a hurried, half-assedexamination of my pup who was diagnosed with a "sore neck". She passed just four days later from a brain tumor and congenital hydrocephalus. Our Chihuahua had stopped eating, was throwing up, and would not drink anything for over two days. He was weak to the point of being unable to walk. We called to set an appointment and they said bring him right in. In 15 minutes we were there and they were seeing him. Two shots in a quick injection of fluids put him back on track to be healthy again. If we did not bring him in that night there was the possibility he would make it another day. Our experience with this practice was the most horrific we could ever have imagined. We took our beloved dog in for a procedure to repair a bowel stricture and after examination of our pet, and our numerous questions as to expected outcome were addressed, we were told he was a good candidate for the procedure. After completing the surgery Dr Amy Lang called us with the good news of how successful she felt the operation had gone and that our dog should certainly have relief and function. The next afternoon (and $2400 later) we received a call from a "nurse" asking about the condition of our dog. I told her how he was in severe pain and that there had been no "relief" as we were told. I asked her to have the Dr. call. After no response and continuous calls and emails for over 5 days we finally took my poor dog in through emergency as it was clearly the only way we could get anyone's attention. We were seen by a different Dr. who took him back for exam and said that she and Dr. Lang had examined him and that the strictures had completely closed back up. Clearly this happened immediately after the procedure. Dr.Lang made no attempt to come to speak with us after her abhorrent lack of response to our many calls and the unspeakable suffering our poor dog had just endured. We were told our only option was euthanasia. We left the office after the procedure feeling so guilty for our dog's unnecessary suffering and in disbelief of how uncaring this practice had been during our ordeal. We later received an invoice for the euthanasia. I composed a lengthy letter stating the facts that led up to this charge and told them I thought the right thing for them to do would be to waive this charge given the circumstances. We never even received the dignity of a response, until months later when we received a letter threatening collection. In all of our years of owning pets and having experienced numerous veterinary "professionals" we cannot understand how these people sleep at night. read more

This office told me a doctor would call me back that she was on the other line and someone would get back to me in a few moments 24 hours later I had to call them back. This office is rude they do not call back like they say and after having pets for over 40 years I have never experienced this from a Vets office, it was almost like they did not care if they saw our pet. They were not helpful and I would not ever recommend this center to anyone that I know that has a pet. We have a German Shepard that has Thyroid Cancer and all they could tell me after waiting for a call back from them is that they do not have an oncologist on staff. We have spent thousands of dollars on our little dog, and have encountered rude vet techs, endured numerous multi-hour waits in our car, have been shoved from one veterinarian to another (4 total), have left unanswered messages, and still don't have a coordinated care plan for our dog. It seems to me that this is a money oriented business first, and a pet care facility second. Within a period of two months our dog has had 3 chest X-rays and a recommendation for yet another echocardiogram. I brought my precious little dog Lucy to FLVRC over several months because she had labored breathing, significant mucus in her throat and nose, and vomiting. Doctor Riordan was her physician. Lucy was given several expensive tests (Tests had to be paid before the tests were performed) and I was told she had IBD. However I was never given a diagnosis for the breathing and mucus problem. Lucy was placed on regiment of Prednisolone, and several other medications. She would show temporary improvement and then digress. At one appointment Dr. Riordan told me I quote "I only take care of very sick dogs". Well I considered my little Lucy a very sick dog! I asked Dr. Riordan if Lucy was dying and she said she didn't think so. Well after spending several thousand dollars at FLVRC my precious little Lucy gave me a kiss and died immediately in my arms. I was devastated and still grieving for Lucy. The supporting staff were very caring but I feel let down by Dr. Riordan. Take caution with this Vet. read more
