They were prepared with a short instructional experience to teach us how to fish, with lots of good guidance for the new fisherman. But best of all, they were very accommodating when we had had enough, and brought us back to shore when our tummies were a bit seasick. Michael prepared and catch so that we could take it to a local restaurant for dinner, and both taught us a great deal about the local fishing and islands experience. Thanks to them, we had a great fishing day, and next time we come to visit we will certainly try them again. I highly recommend them especially if you would like a more intimate and private experience.

Our party of 5 did a Tortugas trip the 1st week of April. Friday night and Saturda were pretty…read morerough seas with 2 of our party getting seasick. First stop was around 9pm after a 6 hour ride. Fishing was slow. Captain Bryson headed south for mutton snapper grounds. Around daybreak we had fishing chaos for a couple of hours. Big muttons, big porgy, some mangroves and vermilion. Bite stopped and captain moved multiple times looking for fish. We found plenty of American Reds which were out of season and forced some of the moves. Picked up a few keepers (mostly vermilion) at most of the spots but nothing significant until a late afternoon move to a ledge. More fishing chaos with huge porgy, red grouper, mutton snapper, big mangoes, with some yellowtail and vermilion mixed in. It was incredible well into the late evening. Fish stopped biting. Many ate a late dinner. The tide changed and fishing chaos resumed until early morning and we headed for Marco. We filled 3 coolers with big fish. Wish I could post pictures! It was my 5th trip on the Hunter. I live on Marco and can deal with the inconvenience of weather cancellations. The other 4 in my party had to deal with an inconvenient weather cancellation last fall wasting PTO and vacation. This is a bucket list opportunity for a lot of quality fish which are hard to come by inside of 80 miles from Marco Island. The captain and mates worked hard and were accommodating and energetic. Food was excellent. Never a reason to be hungry (unless you were seasick). I have noticed on my trips that hot afternoons produce little action. Sunrise, sunset and night fishing produced the most action and mitigated shark and barracuda pilfering which would be abundant on daytime wrecks. I used the boat rods which are designed to rest on the rail when you are fighting big fish. Snapped my favorite grouper rod on a prior trip. But you must bring your own terminal tackle (sinkers, swivels, hooks, etc,). Bring 4-10 ounce sinkers because of huge tide fluctuations. Plenty of different circle hooks depending on what the action requires eg. Yellowtail and vermilion vs big mutton, porgy, mangrove and grouper capable of straightening weaker hooks. I think the Tortugas trips are more predictable to produce fish than the Pulley Ridge trips. It's anchored over structure vs drifting. Fast current is hard to fish in 200 feet of water when anchored. It can be a nightmare in 800 feet of rough water while drifting and trying to maintain contact with the bottom. The Hunter is smaller than the Patriot with fewer amenities. The trade off is more space to fish with fewer fishermen resulting in fewer tangles. Tangles are truly frustrating when the bite is on and you are missing out on fishing chaos!

The captain (Jack) was great. The guide Kristen did know a lot about marine life, I'll give her that. Her customer service skills were terribly lacking however. She def had an attitude about many things; one of them being when I asked for two life jackets for my little kids as we teach them when we're in a boat we wear like jackets supports. She acted like this was insane and out of the question and annoyingly grabbed them for us as said "you can have them but I don't want to invoke fear of the rest of the guests" I actually was so pissed she said that in front of my kids. At the end we got a bill and I was confused because when I booked, I was charged over $400 so I said simply I think we already paid, can I find my receipt and email? I showed her it said on my receipt "total paid" and showed her the charge on my credit card. She said in twenty some or thirty some years it's always the same and it's like a hotel and made me feel like an idiot. Again, I feel like i just asked a question and was spoken to like I was an absolute idiot. I then a little agitated calmly said, it's a little infuriating we are spending $400 and you are talking to me like this. I found your comment earlier about the invoking fear to be out of line and compared it to wearing a seatbelt in a car and I don't appreciate feeling judged by wanting to wear safety equipment in a boat. She gave zero apology and doubled down with both things and honestly I was so annoyed, I topped nothing and got off the boat. Kristen may be a marine expert, but having her with your business is honestly a liability. I am SOOOOO pissed we spent $400 on this ride. I hope you're other employees are better. We loved driving the Craig Cats, seeing dolphins playing from 1 foot above the waterline, learning about the ecosystem here and the Calusa Indians who once lived here.
