Send a bouquet of twenty white tulips that are as pure as fresh-fallen snow, accented with just a touch of fragrant white pine. It's the essence of the season, captured in a vase. 15 white tulips - accented with white pine. I got a very Spring arrangement of bright yellow tulips and pine. First yellow is hardly a winter color. Second when I called I was told my husband checked a box to allow for substitutions, however there is no check the box on the online form. I called and she scent "alternatives" to replace the ones I had. These looked like they were put together by a 5 year old. buyer beware you will not get what you order. I have ordered flowers from this shop via phone multiple times in the past several years, as it is near my parents house and is an "easy" delivery. Overall, I have been moderately happy with the flowers, although I have felt they are a bit pricey for the type of flowers they put in the arrangements. I typically ask for them to create something beautiful with specific colors and style in th $100 range. The arrangements usually look closer to a $50/$60 purchase, but it usually makes my mom happy, with only a few deliveries that were a bit off, so I continued using them. I placed a last minute order with them, online, the day before Mother's Day. I chose the Teleflora Make Her Day arrangement and selected Premium to ensure I was getting a full, lush arrangement. I specifically selected this one, as my mom adores pink and green and this one was full of green blooms and piles and piles of flowers. the size stated it would be 12.5 x 12.5" in size. And it showed a classy, emerald green vase. I understand it was Mothers Day weekend, so it is busy and I know that substitutions can be made that would maintain the overall colors, theme, style and size. The photo showed at least 15 roses. I plunked down 82 bucks and went about my day. OMG. Mom texted me a pic of her delivery and thanked me for my "unique selection". Mom-speak for horrific. She received some vile, rinky dink, thrown together, tiny, cheap arrangement complete with an ugly hot pink day Lilly looking thing, some weak shriveled crap sticking out and not 15, but 3 roses and some 7-11 style grab and go carnations, shoved into a dollar store type turquoise vase. I was ticked and embarrassed. I put on my patience and called the shop when they were open the following Monday. The woman was pleasant and offered to send a new arrangement that would display the quality I had purchased. Mom sent a pic of the "quality" arrangement that arrived later in the day, with a text stating " It's the thought that counts! At least they put a couple more roses in this time - I got 8!" While this arrangement is a it fuller and not so sloppy, it is nowhere near what I ordered and not sure how it would qualify as $82 worth of effort and flowers. I had mom measure it and it clocked in at almost 9" tall by 7" wide. Not even close to the advertised 12.5x12.5. Mom does not like purple and this one had purple stuff all over it. Anyway. End of rant. I highly recommend skipping this florist. They had the chance to correct their mistake and were still unable to make the mark. read more

The hours online state they are open until 5:30 pm. I arrive just before 5:00pm and the doors are locked with a paper on the door with hours stating Monday through Friday they close at 5:00 pm and only Friday they are open until 5:30om. Multiple people arrived directly after me bringing in items. Apparently they are having some sort of function or class. I told the gentleman who answered the door that they need to update their web hours if they are closing at 5:00pm instead of 5:30pm and he said he "would let them know". Ridiculous. The arrangement looked nothing like that I ordered and when I called the woman was very understanding and offered a full refund since the viewing and service were only one day and the plant could not be replaced at that point. Every arrangement I've see have been gorgeous, fresh, and arranged beautifully. My parents sent me one of the arrangements will all yellow flowers that comes in a smiley face mug, and the flowers were fresh and lasted for a while! Same with Valentine's day flower from my hubby. A wonderful variety of flowers, fresh and fragrant. I also took in an order someone had delivered to the church I work for, for a funeral. It was a small order however the customer service over the phone was little to none. They told me they were out of roses for boutonnieres for my daughter. They sold me a peace Lily instead which later on I was told is normally for funerals. I went to Kroger and Kroger sold me a eight dollar boutonniere white rose with baby breath. The first time I used Flowers Make Scents was in 2002 for my wedding. I wasn't sure what I wanted, and the owner was so helpful. She spent lots of time with me, and I never felt rushed or like I was inconveniencing her. I've only needed to send flowers a few other times over the years since then. They made a few gorgeous arrangements for my daughter's first birthday party. Once was "just because" for my Mom earlier this year. Again, they somehow figured out exactly what I wanted. I called Flowers Make Scents last week for a last minute hospital delivery for a coworker. Not only did they wait for me to drive 30 minutes to their shop to drop off the card (they were about to leave for the days delivery when I phoned) but they Nailed the floral arrangement. I ordered flowers for my grandmothers funeral from a pictured arrangement on their website. I personally went in to order. I was told the flowers in that particular arrangement were out of season and she assured me they would stick to the same colors, purples and pinks. What a joke, it was no where near the size it should have been with cheap flowers that were old and the few pink carnations that were in it had started to wilt on the edges. I would caution any bride that uses this company. We have had two experiences with them, one great and the other not so good. My sisters flowers turned out beautiful and they truly did a great job for her wedding- minus the fact that her bouquet was significantly smaller than the bridesmaids. Fast forward to three years later and I had the complete opposite experience. We ended up cancelling our wedding 6 months before the date and I went back to the company to see if they could work with me on refunding part of what I had paid and they wouldn't refund a dime. Considering there was no contract, I would have been happy if they refunded all but the deposit, but they wouldn't even do that. So now I am out a significant amount of money and they didn't even purchase anything for my wedding. read more

I had requested a bridal bouquet with purple and blue flowers and a head dress as well. When I saw the bouquet there were only 1 stem of blue flowers and 1 of purple. Hardly any color at all! The flowers barely made it down the aisle before they started falling out of the holder. My husbands bountinerre fell apart during our first dance. Really terrible craftsmanship. The head piece had barely any flowers on it and only in the front. I paid almost $300 for flowers that didn't even last through the first 2 hours of the wedding. The lilies were wilting, the roses fell out. I wasn't throwing the bouquet around. I just held it in my hands for the walk down the aisle and photos. It was a cool day so the flowers weren't wilting from the heat. I will never order flowers from this company again! High price tag for less than professional quality! Shari saw the weather forecast and brought the flowers to the venue on Friday- just to play it safe. The temperature in the venue's freezer caused many of the flowers to turn brown and die. The centerpieces looked like bowls of cornflakes Saturday morning. Shari returned to her store, picked up an assortment of flowers (not what we had ordered) and created new centerpieces. She knew what our vision was and created beautiful arrangements- different from the original ones but just as beautiful. I called to order my daughter's prom flowers, a corsage and a boutonniere a month before prom. I was told to call back in and order two weeks before the event. Two weeks before the event I called and spoke to Taylor I advised her that I needed a corsage and a boutonniere for prom I was told I would receive Deep red roses a burgundy ribbon white flower accents and greenery for accent on a wristlet. This is my first time ordering from the florist. When I arrived the day before prom to pick up my order I was shocked to say the least. The corsage was so tiny it was barely a corsage it was on a piece of metal as if they got it from the scrap metal shop the flowers were purple and looked like they came out of somebody's backyard there was no white flower accents there was no ribbon and no roses. I immediately told her my concerns and told her it wasn't what I ordered she told me that she was willing to fix it if I gave her a few hours I was willing to allow her to try to remedy the situation. She advised me she didn't have any red roses and there was barely any flowers in the store to choose from she said the only white flowers she has were spring roses. And she said she could take the corsage off of the metal and put it on a piece of ribbon she said she no longer makes corsages out of ribbon or adds baby's breath because it's outdated which I was not informed of prior to ordering a corsage. I left the store and gave her a few hours. When I arrived back to the store it was the same flowers on the corsage the flowers were now glued to a piece of ribbon and she added A few white spring roses to the corsage and one spring white rose to the boutonniere the white Spring roses she added were brown on the tips which were not fresh I did buy it and I did leave the store only because there was no other option on short notice and I needed something for my daughter for prom if it was for any other occasion I would have never purchased it and would've left the store immediately. It was definitely not worth the money. To say I was dissatisfied unhappy and extremely upset would say the least. This was supposed to be a special occasion and this florist did not make it that! When the corsage was put around the wrist there was not enough ribbon to tie it so needless to say the corsage was useless and we were unable to use it I was also told the corsage was $30 and the boutonniere was $10 when I purchased the corsage and boutonniere the boutonniere ended up being five dollars more to equal $15 I normally wouldn't have minded the extra five dollars however it looks like nothing I ordered and I was unsatisfied with the end result. We put the boutonniere and the corsage in the refrigerator as instructed. The next day the flowers wilted within a few hours and it was only 60° outside. The flowers didn't even last the entire prom. Needless to say I do not recommend this florist and I will never purchase from them again! Believe me when I say I will let others know about my experience with this florist. read more

I ordered a funeral spray called 'Sentiments of Serenity." White roses, carnations and lilies from flower delivery express (an online FTD florist) for $161.64 - $40 discount. Unfortunately, Flowers Make Scents filled the order. What I received was a cheap looking spray of mostly daises and baby's breath (See attached picture). They stated that the order said that substitutions were okay. I believe the reason that the substitution was made by Flowers Make Scents was because it was too costly to fill the order as requested. They said that their sprays start at $125. They received $106 for this order from the FTD company. Do they give cheap substitutions on all of their online orders?? Probably thought I would never see the flowers. Well, I did. Up close and personal. I was very sad to see my name on these crappy flowers. I had a great experience with flowers make sense for my wedding. I had very specific request with a succulent bouquet and hanging curtains of marigolds and carnations for Indian inspired touches for my wedding. The staff worked with me extensively in hand selecting the perfect flowers for my wedding and delivering beautiful unique arrangements that awed my guests. My wedding bouquet was STUNNING! To this day I receive compliments about the flowers at my wedding and if the number if pins on pinterest is any indication my flowers are still inspiring brides to be! Horrible customer service! My sister used them for her wedding. She was paying for the wedding herself, and told the florist in their very first meeting she didn't have a huge budget for flowers. The florist said she was still happy to work with my sister and could do her wedding, and the florist herself suggested several cost-cutting ideas for the flowers. My sister said that sounded great, but when the florist sent her the contract a few weeks later, it contained a lot more flowers than they had agreed on and all of the expensive options my sister had already told them she didn't want. My sister went back into the shop to bring the money and the contract and to make the changes to the contract. She went to the store to do all this several weeks before they had told her the money was due. When she asked the florist to make the changes to the contract, the OWNER flipped out and started yelling at her in front of several other customers. These were her exact words: "This is ridiculous. If I had known you'd be spending this much, I never would have agreed to do your wedding. I could have done another wedding. This one is a waste of my time. I have a business to think of. I never would have suggested those arrangements to you, you must have made those up yourself." She told my sister to her face she was a liar...in front of other people. She embarrased my sister. The owner stormed into the back without another word to my sister, who stood there speechless. The woman's daughter then came out, and never bothered to apologize. In normal circumstances, my sister would have just found another florist, but at this point it was too late to get another florist in time for a busy season June wedding. So they were stuck using them. For the next several weeks leading up to the wedding, my sister was worrying about whether her flowers would even look nice or if the florist was too mad at them and would bring crappy flowers. The flowers did end up looking nice and were what we ordered, but my sister was worrying about it on her wedding day. No bride should have to worry about that on her wedding day - it just added unneeded stress to an already stressful day. Especially when my sister did nothing wrong - if the lady thought she was losing money on the wedding, she never should have agreed to take it in the first place after my sister was very honest in telling them she didn't have much money to spend. So, get your flowers elsewhere, especially for a wedding - unless you plan to spend a ton of money there...I bet then they'd be really nice to you. read more

I had a bad experience with Flowers Make Scents and would recommend going elsewhere for your flower needs if you are considering them. I didn't know a lot about flowers, so I was mainly concerned about the colors of the bouquets and arrangements and thought I could leave the specific flower selections up to the experts. We went over everything and the owner showed me pictures of the flowers she suggested. I wasn't really worried about anything leading up to the wedding day. It was what we received that I was upset about. Here's a list of all the things that were wrong: 1. We ordered a flower arrangement for our cheese and fruit table and showed them a picture of an arrangement they had done before for another wedding we had been to. My mother went in to the shop the day before the wedding and happened to see it in the cooler. She told them it was way too small for what we needed and she was assured it would be changed. When it arrived on the day of the wedding, no changes had been made and the venue staff had to modify it so it didn't look disproportionate on the table. 2. We had 2 arrangements in vases that were set up on pedestals for our makeshift altar in our outdoor ceremony. We were assured that these arrangements would be weighted, however they came in round based vases with no weight. Just before the ceremony, it fell and the vase shattered. Luckily our venue found another that we used and attempted to weight it with what they had. During the ceremony it almost fell again, but luckily one of the groomsmen saw it staggering and stepped over to save it before it crashed again. 3. We had a very specific contract outlined that included the colors and specific flower types that should go into the bride bouquet and the bridesmaid bouquets. My bride bouquet was supposed to be ivory and pale yellow roses, rannunculous, and freesias, etc. The bridesmaid bouquets were supposed to be bright yellows so they stood out against mine. Instead mine was some ivory and some bright yellow and bridesmaids had the pale yellow that was supposed to me in mine along with bright yellow. There was not enough contrast. The main complaint about the bouquets, though, was that I ended up with yellow tulips in my bouquet. By the end of the ceremony, the tulips were wilting and drooping down out of the bouquet. I didn't realize it at the time, but in all of my photos after the ceremony, the bouquet looks terrible. The flowers drooping out of the bouquet is very messy looking and I've spent unreasonable amounts of time trying to photoshop the photos so that I don't fixate on the flowers instead of the event the photo is supposed to be capturing. The bride bouquet was also barely bigger than the bridesmaid bouquets. I truly had a wonderful wedding and was very happy with the other vendors I used, so it really was a shame that this florist was so disappointing. read more

I used Flowers Make Scents for my wedding on 9/7/13. I wanted the wedding to have sort of an old, art-deco feel to it, and I knew that the flowers would be important in reflecting that theme while working in the confines of my budget. So I met with the owner, Ellen, and I showed her pictures and described which colors and flowers I liked while she took notes. The co-owner Shari sent me a contract describing exactly what flowers they would use, what vases, etc. I am a perfectionist, so I sent the contract back with a few changes, and they told me no problem. A few months later, I asked to come back for a preview of what my centerpieces would look like (the preview is an awesome thing they do to make SURE their brides are happy IN ADVANCE of wedding day), and I wasn't completely thrilled with what they had come up with... so I sent over a few more pictures and revised my original description of the flowers, because, hey, a girl is allowed to change her mind, right? Went in again to preview my flowers before the wedding, and they were PERFECT! I was so impressed with how they took my vision and made it better than the pictures I had showed them, not to mention how patient they were with me and all my little tweaks and revisions. I would absolutely recommend Flowers Make Scents to another Richmond-area bride! I just wish I could post a picture here to show off my lovely bouquet and centerpiece! read more
