Deschutes River State Recreation Area - Deschutes River State Rec Area

    Deschutes River State Recreation Area

Lovely setting...but way too loud to stay overnight…read more Decided to stay at the campground while exploring the area. The setting of the campground is really pretty, and felt quite peaceful until dark. I'd noticed the sign on the info board warning of noise. But honestly I assumed it would be the normal passing train noise we always experience when staying along the gorge. But this location was something different...train whistles were sounded throughout the entire night. No sleep was to be had for me here. Regardless, we prepped to roam the trails that morning. While I didn't have big expectations when we started off along the river we really ended up enjoying the trails. The hillsides around the Deschutes provide a simply stunning landscape. There are multiple, parallel levels of trails from which to choose. We opted to take about 5 miles round trip, starting on the lowest trail and looping back via the next level up. The trails are narrow & winding, with uneven surfaces. On that sunny day it was very serene, with only the sounds of the river and birds. I wouldn't consider using the campground again, simply due to the train whistles. The sites weren't at all private, some level/some not...but all with nice river views. I would definitely recommend use of the trail system, however.

However, being the Gorge it can get windy. Sometimes very windy. I don't camp but if I did it wouldn't be here. It's right on the rail line and five mile long freight rains pass by a few hundred feet away every five minutes..... literally. Other than that, it's a good State park with all the amenities. Easy to get to so if you are on the Interstate and need a break you'll find this area more refreshing than a highway rest area.

I then tried to fish for trout out in nature but due to my track record and queasiness of what to do after I catch, I just end up continuing to come here!! The staff has ALWAYS been extremely helpful for me when I have issues removing a hook, or any questions I may have. They even give advice and show you how to do XYZ. You can bring your own gear, or use theirs for free! No license required since it is a farm. You will pay based on inches of the fish, and they will gut it and cut it and you will be on your way to a delicious dinner!!

We were told that if the roots of the fish became tangled, they would not replace them, and we were advised to bring our own equipment in a way that felt unnecessarily aggressive. The interaction was uncomfortable, even for the children with us. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this place. "We've visited this fish farm many times, but this visit was extremely upsetting. The staff refused to give us the equipment we needed and spoke to us in a harsh, unprofessional way. When the owner came over, he was aggressive, told me not to speak, and asked our whole group to leave -- including our two kids (9 and 11) who were checking in with us, and even my daughter's Girl Scout group who had not spoken to him at all. He raised his voice at the children, leaving them very upset. Based on this experience, we cannot recommend this place.

A friend and I were fishing the Klickitat River on Friday, 9/4. It had been a long day on the river, and we'd picked up a few fish but it was by no means "white-hot". Towards the end of the drift, near town, we saw a driftboat anchored up against the shore. We figured this meant that the fishermen were going after Chinook, and fished on through with our floating lines. Long story short, we hooked a strong steelhead in the whitewater just above the hole, and had to pull over just in front of the boat. We asked the guide -if we could borrow his net, as we'd lost ours the previous day. He not only did that, but hopped out and netted the fish for us. The guide (Ricky) could have been angry with us for fishing through his water (even on accident). Instead he was a consummate professional and very friendly, cheering us on. My friend and I were very impressed at his riverside manners and think it deserves a very strong kudos. I will definitely keep the Evening Hatch in mind on my future trips to the river. Keep it up guys!

The Columbia River cuts through the mountains and the resulting views are spectacular from both the Washington and Oregon side. Lush and green in the spring, golden brown in the hot summer - beautiful any time of the year. While driving on the Lewis & Clark highway on the Washington side, you will encounter expansive views of the majestic Columbia River all along the way. It's breathtaking! There are several places where you can safely pull over and get out of your car and take in the stunning scenery. If you are driving on S14 from Vancouver, stop at the Cape Horn Look-out Point for the first expansive view of this incredibly beautiful area. It is often super windy here but it's worth getting out of your car and taking in the view, snapping some pics. Follow along the Columbia River going through and stopping in the charming town of Stevenson with shops and quant restaurants (worth a stop) and continue to White Salmon, another charming town worth visiting. Grab a cardamom bun at The White Salmon Bakery and a sandwich, you will thank me! Continue on the Lewis and Clark Highway to Lyle where there are several areas to hike. Catherine Creek is popular especially in the spring when the fields are filled with wildflowers. The symphony starts with yellow balsam root turning the fields a sea of golden yellow. Then comes the blue lupine, orange California poppy followed by the dainty blue and purple bachelor buttons. As the flowers fade and the sun beats down on the hills, the fields turn a golden brown which has it's own beauty. For experienced hikers, the Catherine Arch Loop and the Dalles Mountain Ranch Loop are very popular hikes. For those like me who required paved trails, Catherine Creek is perfect. The wide path winds p up and down small hills as the two mile loop makes it's way down towards the river and then back up with plenty of benches along the way to rest or simply chill and enjoy the beauty. Continue east past Lyle to Maryhill, the ride through the basalt cliffs and views over to Oregon are so pretty. Visit the orchards and vineyards (Cascade Cliffs, my fave; Jacob Williams, Maryhill Winery) and definitely stop at the replica of Stonehenge, built to resemble the original Stonehenge in England, to the exact measurements. Even though this is technically the "end" of The Columbia Gorge, continue on to Goldendale and pass incredible views of the hundreds of ginormous windmills dotting the hills. When you reach Goldendale, if it's a clear day, you can see 5, yes, 5, mountains from one vantage point at the aptly named Five Mountain Ranch Viewpoint. When friends come to Portland for a visit, they always want to see the coast and spend time in Willamette Valley Wine country, both gorgeous and fun places in their own right. Of course I take them there but I always insist on a ride through the Gorge, either the Oregon or Washington side, sometimes both! Leaving Portland I drive along the WA side and return via I-84 in Oregon so that the river is always on the right side for best views. They immediately fall in love with the area and are so grateful for the opportunity to experience so much natural beauty.
