    Seafood Pasta

Started off with the nikumaki & the California tower (basically a deconstructed California roll) which I highly recommend. Both pretty simple and emphasized the quality of the ingredients. Keeping with the theme of my apps, I wanted something simple for my main and the seafood pasta delivered. Again, emphasized the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Light, but still flavorful. I really enjoyed how the sake added depth to the butter sauce and paired especially well with the squid, clams & mussels. It was one of the best Japanese-Western fusion dishes I've had in a minute. I also loved the vibe, it's very homey and low to the ground which I enjoy. It's like an old Japanese restaurant, with lots of wood details which gives you a warm feeling. Servers are also very attentive, always making sure you have water and enjoyed your food -- even if it's busy!

Our ninth visit to the Flying Fish was a delightful experience. To be honest, we both absolutely adore this place. It's non-pretentious, not touristy, intimate, and the staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. The food is consistently top-notch and surprising, and this trip was no exception. My wife had the Cod, while I opted for the Ahi, which I must say, surpassed all the other dishes I've had so far. However, this time, I didn't give them full marks. It was my wife's birthday, and they were aware of this in advance. I was a bit disappointed that no one even bothered to wish her a happy birthday. I understand that it was a busy night, but we had chosen to spend a special evening at the Flying Fish. I wasn't looking for a sing-song or anything like that; I just wanted a little thoughtfulness to make the occasion even more memorable. Despite this minor setback, we'll definitely be returning to the Flying Fish. However, this incident did take the shine off what has been a perfect run. *** I just received a phone call from the owner of the restaurant. He read the review, found my cell and wanted to speak with my wife to apologize. This gesture went a long way so I put another star back. Hopefully on our return I can get back to 5 stars ... Everyone makes mistakes, it's the recovery that matters and this outreach is another example as to why the flying fish is such a fantastic resturants to recommend !

Almond Seabass and Grilled Salmon Fillet

First- make a reservation (it's a small place). We made one and did not regret it. We came here in 2021 and never forgot about the Almond Crusted Sea Bass, so we booked our trip to Carmel for our anniversary we both agreed, we must eat at Flying Fish. We had AMAZING service! Our server was sweet, great positive energy, and had a great connection with the server who assisted her. We felt like we were guests in their home. Now the food: we had the chips and salsa, it was sweet and good. My favorite Almond Sea Bass which comes with massed potatoes, veggies and an amazing gravy-ish liquid with shrimp. OMG still to die for! My husband got the grilled salmon with veggies and rice. We enjoyed every moment of our dinner. The staff even surprised us with an ice cream sundae to celebrate. We left incredibly well fed, happy, and discussing this needs to be an every year anniversary dinner. Let's be honest, we will be back sooner. Thank you Flying Fish for the amazing experience and food.

I came in shivering from the cold. I'm from Phoenix lol. So they got me hot tea, hot soup, water, soda-because I was drinking everything haha- and I had the chips and salsa. Omg! So good! I was also along because I'm taking a solo trip to get some clarity. Anyways, I met everyone from the hostess, waitress, and even people in the back. Everyone came to check on me, got to k ow me, told me about their families, etc. I felt so cared for! I can't wait to come back and try some of their other dishes. The service was the best I ever had and it felt genuine. Highly recommended! Cute and cozy place too, by the way. I was between two tables. One table was speaking in French and the other in either Norwegian/Swedish. Very cool!

This place is super unique - with hubby that is Japanese and Wife Chinese, they bring their flavors to the dishes - calling it Asian Fusion cuisine. The dishes were quite unique and hard to describe. When I asked for a spicy sauce, then won my heart. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived - the host was very polite and kept us entertained by guessing what part of the world he grew up in :) The place is few steps below ground level - has a Japanese theme to it - very cozy booths. Loved this place - will be back to try more dishes!

Almond crusted seabass with Chinese cabbage!! Excellent !!

I took my wife out to celebrate her birthday and we got a gift certificate to the Flying Fish Grill in Carmel. Excellent little restaurant with great food. It's a Japanese/American fusion restaurant and had a real homey and welcoming vibe. We started with their version of chips and salsa which was fried egg roll wrappers along with a sweet dipping sauce. We had their California Tower which was sushi rice , with sesame seeds on top topped off with Dungeness crab, and nori. It was a real treat. They have a great selection of food and my wife had the ying/yang salmon and I had the almond crusted seabass on top of mashed potatoes. Food was great. Our service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. For dessert I splurged and had the tempura friend banana , with home made caramel sauce with almonds , vanilla ice cream, strawberries and fudge sauce. Needless to say it was delicious. The only downside is that the restaurant is tucked away in a corner at the Carmel Plaza , and parking is extremely difficult but that's par for downtown Carmel. Overall will definitely come back!!!

We were looking for a restaurant with good sea food and definitely found the spot. We were warmly greeted and checked on the entirety of our dinner. Everything was really good, and the abalone was delicious. Only real complaint is that the tuna got a bit more cooked than we tend to like, but still delicious flavors.

My husband and I had a phenomenal dinner at Flying Fish Grill and can't wait to come back! The service was fantastic, food was delicious, and we loved the ambiance. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection. I wish we had know about this restaurant sooner!

Every time we visit Carmel, we make sure to visit Flying Fish. We are never disappointed. I tell everyone I know to eat here during their visit.

Send me home hungry and bill me $$$ for 2, at least i get to stay in my PJs. I'm glad I stuck through with the original plan and was blown away by the endless mindfuck of plates that permanently altered my brain chemistry. In all seriousness, the menu itself doesnt seem too special: crabcakes, ceasar salad, creme brulee. Very unassuming and no real twists to it. BUT -- everything was executed to PER-FECT-SHUN and I found myself just shy of licking every. frikkin'. plate clean. No stone left unturned - in this case, not a single kernel of corn or garnish was left uneaten. I'll jump right to the food: - Half dozen raw oysters: honestly might be the more underwhelming dish of the meal only because the oysters didn't have much flavor. No brine. No sweet. The mignonette was so great though! it gave the oysters what it needed. Add a flake of salt and we're cookin'. - Caesar salad: Good all around. The assembly is what made it so over-the-top. The classic caesar but with ribbons of parm, light and fresh anchovies, whole thinly sliced loaf of crouton that held that salad up like a house of cards but crumbles to touch. I was picking up every crumb that tumbled off to the table and was audibly slurping the ribbons of parmesan. - Crabcakes: Not just another crabcake. The batter was crunchy but didn't make the dish heavy. a cooling and smooth avo creme. but OH MY GOD the grilled corn on the plate really made the dish shine! It added a nice sweet pop and smokiness that made the dish more complex. Not even assembled in a cute pile, just scattered little kernels on a plate got me out here picking them up one-by-one like a mere peasant dusting the sidewalk for nickels. yes, humble me chef. I had to apologize to the waitress who cleared my plate for how embarrassingly clean my plate was. - Thai mussels: A cliche of a mussel dish on every modern menu. I've had a lot of versions of this dish and this plate wowed me in that the mussels were simply cooked perfectly. the sauce was not thin, not too pulpy nor salty. The sauce actually penetrated the mussels. The mussels were fresh, and no empty shells, which is a low bar but so common to see these days. There might even be a couple straggling that i was able to fish from the bottom. Just a clean dish overall. The fries were the perfect accompaniment. The walls of the extra starchy and crispy fries grabbed alot of the sauce for dipping. So smart. - Beef cheeks: Perfect textures all around. It feels wrong to complain at this point but I wanted more unctuousness from the protein. The beef was actually a backdrop to the polenta and mushrooms. i wanted more fat, more melty gelatinous tendon bites. what it produced though was a perfect fancy gravy for the polenta - so creamy and perfectly seasoned. A leafy green here and there. The maitaki mushrooms were cooked perfectly, not greasy. I was really just scraping the plate for the polenta and grabbing a bite of beef cheeks as sauce. Not a bad way to live by any means. - Acai sorbet: I almost never order dessert at a restaurant. It tends to disspoint and overpriced but i have never trusted a chef so much with a full meal so of course i got TWO desserts. The acai was accompanied with raspberries and granola. Super fresh and light. The acai broke apart upon touch, didnt slide around eventhough it's on a plate, but the plate choice was nicely textured to grip the icy sorbet (WHY AM I THINKING ABOUT THEIR PLATE CHOICE??) Gronola was not clunky and added a (rice) crispiness rarely found in granola. Such great care and attention to detail. - Orange and Tarragon Creme Brulee: I looked at the creme brulee with distain. Why did we order a 2nd dessert when the acai sorbet was already perfect. Orange and tarragon sounds like they're trying to sound "complex" but rarely delivers on balance and impact. I cracked the torched sugar top and gave it a chance, knowing that i havent been dissapointed tonight yet... and CUE the hallelujah angels choirs. I looked my partner in the eye and audibly said "YUMMMM... TRY. THIS. NAOOO.". We switched from the acai to the creme brulee and never stopped until the sides were hallowed out and every crystal of torched sugar was scraped off the walls. The torched sugar top cracked with ease and stayed CRISPYYYY the whole time. The custard was smooth, thick but light, and packed with orange flavor that was fiercely tempered by the herbaceous tarragon. The one sliver of orange peel candy was not supposed to wow me with it's texture and left me wondering how they managed to get the cracker-like crackle without too much sugar and not leave it leathery?? What a way to end a meal. On my way home, I got a twinge of the orange peel left in my teeth and it instantly brought me back to the magic that was the Mission Bistro. and it was HOT.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate my 40th birthday, and while the food was excellent and our…read moreserver was wonderful, the overall experience left us so disappointed that we will not be returning. What makes this especially frustrating is that multiple people went out of their way to try to make the occasion special. My mother called ahead to arrange a birthday surprise, and my best friend and her husband made several attempts to contact the restaurant in the days leading up to our reservation. They called multiple times, left voicemails, and specifically requested callbacks. No one ever responded. As a result, none of those efforts were acknowledged. In fact, my birthday wasn't acknowledged until my husband mentioned it during dinner. To be clear, this was never about receiving anything for free. My family and friends were trying to purchase champagne, dessert, appetizers, or some other surprise to help celebrate a milestone birthday. The issue was the complete lack of communication and follow-through. Afterward, I called the restaurant myself and never received a return call. I then emailed management directly. Since the General Manager was out of the office, my email was forwarded to the Assistant Manager. The response I received was essentially that the birthday notation had been missed. While the oversight was acknowledged, there was no real ownership of the situation, no explanation for why multiple calls and voicemails from my family and friends went unanswered, and no meaningful effort to address the larger communication failure. I followed up seeking further explanation and requesting a conversation with management. I never received a response. To make matters worse, my mother later called three separate times regarding a pair of sunglasses she may have left at the restaurant. Once again, no one returned her calls. Mistakes happen, and most guests are understanding when they do. What is difficult to overlook is the complete lack of communication and follow-through before and after our visit. For a restaurant with such a strong reputation, I expected a much higher level of hospitality and professionalism from management. The food deserves praise. Unfortunately, the way this situation was handled left a far more lasting impression than the meal itself.
