From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly kind and welcoming--not just to us, but to our dog as well. They even brought out water for our pup, which was such a thoughtful touch and really set the tone. A special thank you to Jackie, who checked in on us throughout our visit and took the time to answer all of our questions with genuine warmth. We also had the pleasure of meeting Chef Kyle, who came out to explain the food--such a kind gesture that made the experience feel even more personal. This is the second time in a few days that I have eaten here. The first time I went to the bar, great service and they were very quick! The second time we were seated in the resturant, the only one's in there at 12pm. The manager sat us and served us for a time. He was very attentive. The busser was also very attentive. Then the manager went on break and we had another server step in. She was a tad rough on her skills, we'll say she was newer at her position. As for the food, the burger is amazing, had it both times. A little expensive at $32 however. The wedge fries, very greasy and almost inedible...these were the same both times. Kinda bummer...at again, a $32 price point. Will I go back? Probably, good vibes and nicely decorated. Maybe I'll just keep going to the bar! read more

As a former service worker (sommelier of a steakhouse) I was extremely disappointed in regard to the service at The Caledonian. Reservation was at 7:30. Sat at the table 7:20. Didn't get an introduction for 15 minutes. Once our sever came over I knew it would be smarter to order everything at once. 15 minutes later the soup arrives. No... not even water nor our drinks have made it to the table yet. The soup is finished by the time the drinks come. I'm not an ***hole but I ordered a manhattan uo and got an old fashioned. Close enough but still. Spoon for my soup? Have to flag down a waiter. Steak knife for my food? Again, have to flag down a waiter. Did the shrimp cocktail also arrive on time? Good guess! I eagerly watched the Kimpton Hotel be built near a church I attend. A welcome boost to downtown PG. My dad and I went for Sunday brunch and a gracious hostess sat us. The place was busy and having worked in Carmel restaurants growing up I know how hard the work is. Five minutes went by. Then ten. No coffee. No "I'll be right with you" from a server. At fifteen minutes we walked out and went to the Victorian Corner a block away for a tasty brunch well served. The website states "At The Caledonian locals and guests alike gather in our convivial dining room." This one local won't be back. PG has many other options with more reasonable prices and better service. read more

I was lucky enough to be staying in the newly opened Kimpton, and even luckier to snag a walk-in dinner on a busy Friday night! Despite being newly opened as well, this spot is already bustling - with a 45 minute to 1 hour wait for walk-in's like me. We ended up ordering some cocktails at the bar and sitting outside in the courtyard, where there's plenty of couches, tables and fire pits to wait by. The Caledonian offers a menu of elevated, American cuisine crafted from fresh, local ingredients by a bustling open-concept kitchen where you can watch the chefs (if you're lucky to get a table nearby). My favorite items were the whole fish branzino (although I wish they took out all the bones), the Hokkaido scallops, and their sticky toffee pudding (which we literally came back the next night for). Every dish was well-thought out and cooked to culinary precision, with the exception of the yellowtail crudo, which arrived warm and not very fresh. Overall, I was very impressed with this beautiful, new spot, and I highly recommend stopping by if you're looking to celebrate a special occasion or have a memorable date! read more

The Caledonian at Mirador is aiming squarely at the top of the local market--and in some ways it gets there--but a few early warning signs keep it from sticking the landing. We visited during happy hour and sat at a table in the bar area. The room was comfortably humming: good energy, attractive space, the kind of ambiance that makes you want to settle in for a drink. That part works. The problem is execution. They've only been open a few weeks, and it shows in the service. Server orchestration felt clumsy--not disastrous, but not dialed. The kind of thing you forgive early on, but only briefly. The oysters were fresh and well-shucked, clean and cold--but oddly missing a spoon for the mignonette. A small detail, yet at this price point it matters. The Hokkaido scallops were genuinely good: fresh, nicely handled, finished with a bright citrus oil that respected the product rather than burying it. That dish suggested the kitchen can do things right. Then there was the baked pretzel. At $21, it was a stale, undersized abomination--clearly old, paired with a cheese sauce that was just as bad. It didn't feel like a miss so much as a red flag. Sysco-adjacent execution at a luxury price is not a great look, and it raises questions about consistency elsewhere on the menu. Cocktails, however, are a strength. The bar is above average for the area, and I'd happily return just for drinks. The Vesper martini was solid and confident--exactly what you want in this setting. The tension here is value. The Caledonian is priced to be top-of-market, but for the same money you can eat better locally--just without the ambiance. If they tighten service and fix the basics, this could become a reliable coastal bar-and-bites destination. Until then, it's a place I'd recommend for cocktails and atmosphere, with caution around the food. Strong room. Good energy. Drinks worth ordering. But at these prices, the pretzel shouldn't be a warning label. I'll head back for dinner and give it another go and another review. read more

We recently visited and overall had an enjoyable experience. The chicken was good, the salmon was well prepared, and the chips and dip were a great start to the meal. The wine selection was lovely, and the ambiance is beautiful. The sticky toffee pudding was the standout of the night and absolutely worth ordering. The reason for the 3 stars comes down to how an issue with one entrée was handled. One person in our party ordered the pork chop, and when it arrived, it was noticeably pink in the center. We brought it to the server's attention, and he acknowledged that he could see what we were referring to and offered to have it remade. However, by that point, the guest had lost their appetite and was understandably concerned about the dish being undercooked, so it was taken back. What was disappointing was what happened afterward. When the check arrived, the pork chop was still fully included. We were told it would not be removed because the chef believed it was cooked properly. This led to an uncomfortable back-and-forth discussion with the sever. From our perspective, we were worried about the possibility of getting sick from undercooked pork, while at the same time having to debate whether it should be taken off the bill. While half the charge was eventually removed, it felt inappropriate given that the dish was taken away and the concern had been acknowledged. Additionally, the steak we ordered was good quality, though for a $50+ entrée, the amount of sauce felt excessive almost like a dressed-up A1. At that price point, the steak should stand on its own. This is a newer restaurant, and we truly hope they continue refining both their food execution and how situations like this are handled. read more

We went for happy hour snacks and to check out the menu a few weeks ago. The menu is very safe - not a lot of adventure in the food, perhaps well suited to the target clientele. The drink menu has the most creativity. Prices are high, much more so than typical restaurants in the area. The appetizer we got was fine, but nothing exceptional or memorable. Looking at the mains and the prices we decided to take our business elsewhere in town where we know we'll get high value and high taste. read more

The 2 stars are for the kitchen/food, the decor the bus staff. Otherwise it would be zero stars. The food was really good. The bartenders and waiters were really bad. Some waiters wanted to be good but weren't given the support system to succeed. Some just didn't care. We had a drink at the bar and one of our drinks was missing the key ingredient/alcohol. We ordered a bowl of soup and the runner said he'd be right back with a spoon. We watched him return to the kitchen window and start working again. Never gave it a second thought. Our appitizers were brought 15 minutes before our glasses of wine, which we ordered first. Our waiter was trying to do the right thing and ended up grabbing the 2 bottles and pouring us the wine at the table. Otherwise we probably wouldn't have had a sip with the first course. We were seated for 20 minutes before initial contact. and almost 90 minutes and still hadn't got our main dishes, so we left. All 4 tables around us had the same experience. One person said you have to go mid-week if you don't want this kind of experience. The manager should be replaced asap. Really too bad. read more

We had the best meal tonight at The Caledonian. I ordered the roasted chicken - the skin was perfectly seasoned and crispy to complement the tender and moist meat beneath. The broccoli, beans and orzo balanced out this dish - broccoli and orzo were perfectly al dente and beans just the right softness. My son had the pork chop to share. It was cooked perfectly - tender and well seasoned. We are not pork chops eaters yet loved this dish! Some may balk at the prices but we think it's a fair price for the portion size, quality, amazing service and gorgeous ambiance. Highly recommended. One note: the dining experience is elevated when the restaurant is not manic busy (which was the case when they first opened.) read more

A truly memorable dining experience from start to finish. While the cocktail menu isn't extensive, it's thoughtfully curated with something for every palate. My wife and I began with the caramelized onion dip and the Hokkaido scallop, both absolutely outstanding. From there, we moved on to the pork cavatelli and the New York strip. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the cavatelli was rich, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. To finish, we couldn't resist dessert and chose the sticky toffee pudding, which was the perfect sweet ending to an exceptional meal. Came here for Happy Hour. The outdoor setting was nice, but the menu was lackluster. The only happy hour drinks on the menu was a choice of three wines. Service was pretty slow and they didn't really seem to appreciate our business. They didn't have enough Drink Menus, so the server took ours after we ordered to give to another party. I've eaten at this place around seven times now twice at the bar the rest outside ambience and inside. The restaurant is what Pacific Grove needs and with the locals 20% off it was worth going to on a somewhat regular basis. And at that point it was a 4.5 to 5 star establishment but as of April 1, 2026 they have taken away the Pacific Grove locals discount I'm thinking because everybody was coming in saying they were from Pacific Grove. It is totally 100% the restaurants fault that they are in the position of taking away the 20% as they never checked anyone's ID to cross reference that someone was actually local. Myself and others around me are choosing to no longer eat at this establishment any longer because in all honesty the price points that it is at now the food is not worth it and it is just a average hotel experience with food it is very upscale and good but there is nothing unique in the Chef is probably having his hands tied because they have to feed and cater to the needs of the hotel and with that you cannot be as adventures. But with it being non-adventurous and just OK food I will no longer be returning maybe for the beignets as they are the best but other than that until the locals discount is back I say farewell friends. read more

Booked a table for two for Valentine's Day at 7pm. We are locals and were excited to try a new place in Pacific Grove. We confirmed our reservation twice when we received texts during the week leading up to our reservation. We got dressed up and arrived a few minutes early to the restaurant. We were very surprised when we were told that they had cancelled our reservation two days before and weren't able to seat us because of the Valentine's Day crowd. Went for Valentine's Day dinner with my husband. There were so many people in Pacific Grove today we thought the place would be swamped, but they had limited the reservations. Ambiance ok, a bit of a modern hotel bar. Music - ridiculous loud 70s rock. Prices were eye popping for the offering. Those are the bad parts. The food was quite good (we had salmon and chicken plus a Ceaser salad), the wine was very good although the Pinot was a bit warm. The service was excellent. I'd go back and I'd recommend. Much more memorable than I expected. IMO - bring the prices down a bit, add more sides for order. Make it a tad more fine dining (tablecloths?, a little better lighting?). read more

Working as a Concierge, I look for atmosphere, food, and good customer service in a restaurant so that I feel comfortable recommending that restaurant to guests at a high end hotel in Pebble Beach. Having said that I ventured to a new restaurant in Pacific Grove since PG is nearby to Pebble Beach. I got off to a rocky start. I tried getting thru by phone with no answer at the restaurant and when I called at the dinner hour time...he/she hung up on me. It sounded busy in the background so I decided to use Open Table. My friend and I arrived at 5:22 for a 5:30 reservation. The Hostess said we were 8 minutes early and to come back. We briefly hung out at the open seating area which is very nice but the music was too loud so we checked out the hotel lobby before re-entering the restaurant. The first point of contact is the Hostess who welcomes guests with a friendly smile and maybe a few pleasantries. This does not describe the Caledonian Hostess...but she did guide us to a table. The layout of the tables is very good. The tables are apart enough to prioritize the guest(s) "personal bubble" over maximizing the number of seats. Best part are the chairs. The chair back can actually flip a full circle. It's a good start to feel comfortable while seated. The warm lighting with the latest table lamp craze gives it a candlelight effect. The sound acoustics are not good. One reason is the large bar is too close to dining tables. It's like an elegant sports bar adjacent to elegant dining. Loud voices from drinking, next to softer voices for dining. Sometimes that much togetherness just does not mix well. The Executive Chef Aaron Rayor is a local talent. His focus is high-level technique in modern American fare. Our server Giovanni was a breath of fresh air compared to the Hostess area. He was personable and knowledgeable about the menu. My beverage choice was Hefeweizen beer. They were "out" of that beer. Hmmm. Caledonian just opened 3 days ago. The Cauliflower Bisque was velvety with a touch of garlic. It was a bit too cool to appreciate the flavors...so the oils, or chicken stock, or white wine floating on top was not mixing well. Presentation could have been warmer. My entree was Roasted Chicken with cranberry beans, orzo, broccoli...the best part was the chicken accompaniment, unusual and tasty. The chicken was poorly fabricated. It had a lot of gristle which made it rubbery and tough. Caesar Salad is great. Prepared with lemon flavor and brown butter breadcrumbs and very cheesy. My friend ordered pan fried Pork Chop, sauerkraut puree. With compressed apples (like crab apples). This entree is delectable and perfectly cooked. Worth repeating. We each ordered Citrus Tart dessert. They were "out". Hmmm... The Caledonian is a new upscale-approachable restaurant and worth revisiting when kinks are worked out and menu items are actually available. read more

Off season Sunday night. We (2 humans and 2 dogs) were seated immediately at the patio. We really enjoyed the cocktails on the menu (which came out amazingly quickly). The small plates were the right size to share and were very tasty. We were comfortable on the patio with no heat lamp. Inside looked very cozy with what looked to be a mix of hotel guests and locals. Food $$$ - but well worth it. I have a small group of professional women(6) who meet twice yearly, never in the same place. We're all locals and have expressed interest in this new restaurant. The high end, though casual feel, with plenty of ambience was lovely. The seating hostess, waitstaff and others were wonderfully welcoming. Drinks from the bar were lovely, but, on the second round the bartender had been on break and someone else had stepped in. The second round of drinks some of the ladies received didn't measure up the first and the restaurant made it right by us. That's a HUGE plus, making it right for the customer, especially for a $17 cocktail. The food (breakfast all around) was perfection, each meal was presented beautifully, cooked to perfection with only a single small complaint of overdone bacon, but that too was immediately corrected. We couldn't have asked for a better waitperson (Ofelia). We have never revisited a restaurant on our infrequent meetings, this may though be the exception. We highly recommend the potato pancake, the avocado toast, the Provence Omelet, and the Essential Start. read more

Wife and I went to bar early ~4p and we were lucky to negotiate 2 seats together after offering a free drink to a nice woman to free up our 2 together. 3 bartenders had to work their tails off to keep up. My husband and I had a wonderful dinner last night at the Caledonian. The restaurant's ambience is lovely and we had world class service from all the staff, especially our server Renato. He was professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu offerings. The hostess was very welcoming and there were many bussers delivering food and clearing the table. We shared all our selections, starting with the caesar salad and shrimp - both very fresh and delicious. We had the salmon main, probably one of the best salmon dishes I have ever had, with potatoes and spinach in a herbed lemon cream sauce. We finished up with the beignets in a rich cream sauce, outstanding! The prices are fair for such exceptional food quality. The manager Nicelle stopped by our table to see how we enjoyed our meal and we had only positive feedback. What a great addition to the Monterey Bay restaurant options! read more

The dining room is impressively spacious, and although we were seated at table 51 which was near a busy bar, the noise level remained comfortable, with thoughtfully spaced tables creating a relaxed atmosphere. The greenery draping from the ceiling added a nice touch to the comfortable décor. Our server, Renato, was very friendly, professional, and clearly brought decades of experience, making us feel genuinely welcome. We began with the flavorful caramelized onion dip with chips and potato chips, along with the grilled Ad Astra bread--both fun starters. We shared a unique Caesar salad featuring little gem lettuce, Meyer lemon, brown butter breadcrumbs, and bottarga (salted, pressed, and dried fish roe), which added a distinctive savory note. For the entrée, we split the delicious whole branzino with olive tapenade, herb salad, chives, and lime, delivering a great flavor. We finished with the toffee pudding recommended by staff member Joe, and it was a memorable sweet ending. We especially appreciate the restaurant's commitment to fresh seasonal produce, highlighted by its location just steps from the Pacific Grove Certified Farmers' Market and reflected in its weekly specials. The food tasted clean, healthy and simply delicious reflecting the talent of the Chef Aaron Rayor. My party and I were excited to visit Pacific Grove's newest restaurant, The Caledonian. A part of the new beautifully constructed hotel. We were greeted by convenient valet service and then wandered into the well appointed outdoor courtyard seating area. Pacific Grove is my hometown and I worked at Holman's Department Store in my youth. I was happy to see that the architecture matched the library but also reminded me of the Holman building as well. Now sadly, this is where the review turns to critique. Hopefully management can take these observations as helpful in their making the restaurant and staff the best that patrons will want to return to. As a new endeavor it was clear that they have a lot to improve upon. I'm sad to say that from start to finish the experience was abysmal. After finding seating in the courtyard for drinks before our reservation there was no server in sight. Finally one harried server appeared but was so overwhelmed, we were ignored. As our reservation approached he finally took our drink order but then we had to go into the restaurant to be seated. After sitting for 15 minutes at our table, the server finally found us and delivered our drinks. He said that he was told that we had to pay him as he said he couldn't add it to our dinner bill. Finishing our drink, another 15 minutes had passed. No water offered and the wait staff hurried by to other tables without noticing us. Finally I had to call a waitress over to let her know that we had not been helped yet. She looked embarrassed and said sorry and took our order. Now things went even further downhill. The touted French onion dip with a small bowl of chips was mediocre at best. After a long wait, our entrees arrived. The pork chops were lukewarm, the cauliflower was burnt on the outside but nearly raw on the inside and they had forgotten the pomme pure. We let the waitress know and again she said sorry but never offered bringing the side dish out. The roasted chicken was well prepared. At this point I started having a fantasy of Gordon Ramsey running between the front of the house and kitchen yelling and cussing at the complete lack of coordination and customer care. The waitress never asked if our meals were enjoyable and abruptly delivered dessert menu. Thankfully the desserts were the bright spot, but the lattes were lukewarm. Our reservation was for 7 PM and we finally emerged from the restaurant at 9:45! No hostess was there to stamp our valet ticket and finally a server seemed to have no clue what to do. We left stunned and utterly disappointed that a dining experience could be so flawed. Hopefully this is growing pains and a new staff learning how to smoothly operate a restaurant but it is clear that much training is needed. read more
