    Ultimate Poke Bowl
    Justin W.

If you visit Big Surf, 17 Mile Drive, or Carmel-by-sea, C U Sushi can be a good place for fresh Japanese foods. This is a very casual place filled with local retirees that dine here or have the takeout. We had the Ultimate Poke Bowl, Cherry Blossom Roll, and roasted rice tea. The ingredients of the poke bowl were very fresh and delicious. The sushi was also very tasty and well presented with tobiko, seaweeds on the top. The indoor dining area is not very big and kitchen is not over staffed either. We were lucky to have patio table while the early winter sun was warm enough outside. So be patient with your order. They are worthy of your waiting.

well priced for the quality you get. the hamachi was thick & i loved it! most places slice it too thin. the mango roll & kaarage was to die for. unagi bowl was good too. 2 asahis with everything because beer with sushi is necessary. about $90 for everything. we sat outside & it was lovely. service was fast! 4 stars because i wish the salad & rice bowl came with more fish. kampai!

We were here for lunch some time after noon.

If you're not open till 4pm on Sunday you need to not leave a sign on your door saying 'be right back', and Lunch Break!! And the sign on your door says you're open Sunday for lunch at noon. Thankfully a server from R.G. came out to tell us you weren't open at lunch on Sunday. What!? WRONG SIGN(s) to put out if that's the case. ARGH. We waited & waited & waited....

Had a great lunch here today! Service was good and fast and sushi was fresh. The curry chicken bowl was nice and hot. Many do take out here and I probably will too.

The Perfect Rainy Day Lunch Chicken Curry Bowl Like the waitress says, a warm hug in a bowl. Delicious

I absolutely love sushi and was excited to try C U Sushi two days ago when we were at Carmel by the Sea for a staycation. They are located within a big plaza and parking was very easy to find. We arrived a few minutes before opening, so we didn't have to wait to be seated upon arrival since were were first in line. Compared to Santa Clara County, the overall prices for their sushi and bento are cheap which was a pleasant surprise, minus their tea. Be forewarned. I do not recommend getting tea here because it is $4 per tea cup (not per teapot), a total gyp for four tea bags! It was my fault for not reading the menu for the cost of tea, but it felt like they didn't warn you about it when asking about drinks on purpose because most places don't charge $4 per person. We got the San Francisco roll, Sunshine roll, Scallop Dynamite roll, Lion King roll, a bento, and four roasted rice tea. Our whole family loved their food. The overall taste of their bento and sushi rolls were on point and fresh. Their bento is one of the best tasting ones I've had. In the order from my most favorite to least favorite, it would be their Sunshine roll, Lion King roll, Scallop Dynamite roll, then San Francisco roll, but they were all super tasty. Nothing was below 4/5 stars for their sushi. Ambience was ok. Tables and dining-ware were clean. There were about two other parties who came after us and another for to-go. Service was friendly and we were checked up on by our server who refilled our tea and asked how the food was, but just like other reviews, their service was quite slow as it took them a long while before food was served.

Is there a reason they do not answer their phone and are not helpful with takeout orders?

Everything was really fresh and prepared well. The restaurant has beautiful vaulted ceilings and great vibes. Only note was the music was all over the place but not a big deal at all. We ordered a lot since we were both very hungry and left satisfied. Starters: Spicy garlic edamame - great flavor and not overly done (5/5) Shrimp & Veggie tempura- perfect amount of batter (5/5) Gyoza (5/5) Mains: Chicken Teriyaki served with miso soup, salad, and steamed rice. (4/5) only because the salad while good had a little too much dressing, not a deal breaker. Sake sashimi 5/5 Tiger roll 5/5 Would definitely recommend as a great sushi spot and will be back!

Spacious interior and a separate room for private party. Agedashi tofu and the sushi rolls (Aspen, Sun and Whole-Hearted) were delicious and I'd highly recommend for a good variety. I appreciated the freshness of the fish, rice to fish ratio and creativity of each roll. They also have vegan rolls. Prices were a little elevated for the smaller portions of sushi - $18 and up for each roll but they were tasty enough. There's 60 min street parking nearby.

The Good: * We loved the location--down a set of stairs into a dimly lit, cozy space. * And speaking of cozy spaces, we love that every table is its own private booth. Nothing is more annoying than having to dine with strangers just inches away, in my opinion. * Service was, uhhh, interesting but passable. We actually liked the dude who was following up behind our server, as he seemed like a really cool guy with definite opinions on the food. * Make sure you order their unique take on chips and salsa! Their fried wonton wrappers paired with a deliciously unique ginger pico de gallo were fantastic. * The Fried Fish Cakes (a daily special, so they might not always be on the menu) were delicious and full of flavor. * We both loved our entrées; my Black Bean Halibut was cooked perfectly--tender and flaky--and I loved the funky fermented black bean sauce. Carissa is still talking about her Almond Sea Bass weeks later, so 'nuff said. * The Warm Tempura Banana Sundae was a bit odd but worked in a weird way. We normally skip dessert unless it's something unique, and this certainly fit the bill! The Meh: * Reservations are handled the old-fashioned way: via telephone. * No outdoor dining. The Ugly: * While being underground is part of their charm, as mentioned above, it is definitely not ADA-compliant. So if you or anyone in your party has difficulty traversing stairs, this probably isn't the place for you. Conclusion: Fantastic date-night spot with great service, ambiance, and food. Highly recommended.

The chips and salsa were an interesting take and I'm glad John ordered it. I ordered the almost sea bass and it's a dish that I continued to think about for hours and days afterwards. It was so good and interesting! I tried John's dish but mine was far superior. Another highly recommended restaurant!

It was packing up as we were getting ready to leave. I put a lot of faith in our servers. When we go to sushi, we pick 2, then we usually say what we like, and then ask for them to surprise us. This is what they brought out, and we were not disappointed. Everything was awesome. This is a go-to when we stay in Pacific Grove. We will come back again when we visit town.

Servers were fast and effecient. The soups and salads came first and they were OK. We ordered the gyoza udon, chicken teriyaki, chiarshi and a tempura roll. First of all the udon offerings included kimchi udon which I've never seen in a Japanese restaurant. It's obviously some Korean-Japanses concoction. The udon included a couple of diced carrots and brocolli. So kinda an American-Japanese concoction. 1* The chicken teriyaki was chewy and flavorless. Tasted boiled, not grilled. Rice, salad ok but really kind of hard to screw up. 2* The chirashi and tempura roll were a little better. The tempura roll was at least edible but I noticed the pieces were not evenly cut. One was 1/3 the size of the others. If you know sushi, that's a cardinal sin. Also, no wasabi or ginger served iwth any of the dishes. 3* So if you're looking for something resembling real Japanese food Nura ain't it. Won't be back.
