I recently got married, and changed my last name. To commemorate my old name and my new, I decided I wanted to get it tattoo-ed on my body forever! My name has several floral references, and so I had Catfish design a nice 4 piece floral tattoo to go on my arm. I was honestly blown away by the initial design, and the shading and color just made it the tattoo of my dreams. There was a few snafus with scheduling, but honestly I can't really complain. Creative people come with certain quirks and strengths, and organization isn't always one of them. What I most value about creative people is their *creativity*, and for that, Catfish gets my full support. I'm going to include a photo so you can see his work for yourself.

I have had two tattoos done by Catfish, and I receive numerous complements on them often. He really took the time to help me realize my ideas and received my comments and suggestions in an open way that made me feel incredibly comfortable with the process. By adding his own skilled artistic abilities to my ideas, I ended up with tattoos that are much better than I could have hoped for. If you're thinking about getting some work done and aren't quite sure about the execution, I recommend contacting Catfish and talking it through with him. He is very warm and very easy to deal with. The facility is sparklingly clear, and as an added incentive, Catfish put a movie on to help pass the time. I'm so pleased to have found such an excellent collaborator and artist. Please give them try!

Really disappointed with my tattoo. Ended up getting it fixed at a different place (left picture and tattoo with no color is flying squid tattoo, right picture with color is when I got it fixed at a different shop). I didn't realize how much I didn't like it until after it was healed. The lines were so sharp and it just looked wonky to me. The new place I went to said I was really dug into at flying squid and I had a lot of "blow outs". Looks nothing like the picture I showed to go off of. I believe this was free handed and I should've asked him to trace it. Shop was clean, everyone was nice, just was not satisfied with this tattoo so I had to get it fixed. Didn't want to settle for something that is permanent on my body.

Jeremy did my first tattoo last week and it was quick and painless (tattoos don't hurt imo ) . They are crazy busy on the weekends so expect to wait and have ppl in the lobby behind you. $60 minimum artwork fee. Jeremy is the only artist I trust to tattoo me. Had a larger one done on my foot in April and it's a gorgeous custom job.

I got my first tattoo here yesterday and I am so in love with it. About 2 months ago, I had a consultation with Catfish and had an idea of what I wanted. I showed him a picture and he said he was going to make his own version of it. I was worried I wasn't going to like it, but I LOVED IT! It's super personalized with Texas flowers all around an anatomical female skull. Catfish did postpone our appointment around 6 hours later than it was originally scheduled for, but I had this day completely open so it was no biggie for me. He had a video going on in the background, but I enjoyed talking to him more. This is the first session, the second one will be shading and the third color. I love how this was broken up because gosh it was painful. I am so super in love with my tattoo and experience!

Okay so this was my first choice for my first tattoo but I never got to get it bc of other circumstances.... 2 tattoos later I decided that I wanted to get my 3rd one here and let me tell you I regret not doing my 2nd here... Valentin was my tattoo artist and dude he's amazing i gave him the inspo and he went beyond it, we talked about the place and how it would look at certain angle and position, the whole thing took 5 hours, he would give me breaks and I also remember that I came in right when he was about to eat I felt so bad :c I was also hungry mid tattoo so he offered me one of his egg rolls after that I was getting a little of pain and asked for numb Cream and it went by pretty smooth... I also forgot to mention that he gave me pasties and made me feel pretty comfortable during my tattoo it was an amazing experience since I told him I had a bad experience with the 2 other places I've been before and he exceed my expectations it's been 7 months since I got my tattoo and I just love it... i really recommend Valentin for black tattoos Lol I also decided on not doing the starts bc of the pain but hey still looks pretty sick I also forgot to add the he added better designs like the brow area of the moon and the shading ! read more

Look. Maybe it was an off night and five walkins can be irritating but to tell customers that what they're wanting on their bodies is "bullsh**" was just too far. Another member of my group called Valentine out on it and he said "a little harsh? This is a tattoo shop". Bad vibes, bad customer service, and just terrible energy. Wow this is a great place to get inked the owner Cat fish / Ben Perez is an honest to goodness great artist and master Tatoo artist . Give him a theme or photo he will design a Tatoo that you will love . And hey your never to old . I'm 75 and always wanted a Tatoo but was always to afraid to get one . I got my tattoo done by Ben last week, he was kind enough to fit me into his busy schedule while I was in crisis mode. I told him what I wanted and why and he was quick to respond to my request. The shop is meticulously clean and is set up in the way that you have your privacy while getting your work done. I was lucky enough to have Disney's Oceans playing while I got my tattoo done so I got to watch fish and whales swim around while everything was being prepped for me! (Lol) If you're looking for an artist/shop that you can trust, I would 20/10 recommend the Flying Squid tattoo shop! read more

Dustin is my tattoo artist. He has done 7 tattoos for me. He is superb. So dedicated to his craft and his customers. He is talented, professional, patient and 100% into customer satisfaction. In addition, he is a wonderful creator and can draw anything. He loves what he does as well. I have been his customer for 10 years plus. I was at the shop last night getting 2 new tattoss to celebrate my birthday. The entire shop and all the artists are top notch. The shop and everything is sparkling clean and each artist has his own "office" and all is done in a sterile, private and respectful way. The only place to get a tattoo in the city. read more

I was in the area when my mom finally agreed to go through with getting a tattoo with me. We looked this place up and with 5 stars and 47 reviews, it was a no brainer. When I walked in the guy who greeted me was nice and said someone would be with me shortly. Mel came down and we talked about what we wanted and she came up with different sizes for each of us. We got a very simple tattoo so of course she did well. But Mel was so sweet, funny, and made us feel welcome. The shop was everything you'd expect with 5 star rating. Mel also does some awesome peacock tattoos so if you're interested in one of those, ask for her and look at her designs! read more

Jay was amazing!! Came in randomly and he was very personable and was excited to work with me. He did a great job figuring out the size and placement of my tattoo and made me feel very comfortable. I went to Flying Squid to get pierced, but before choosing this location I called around to dozens of shops, and was basing my decision on which shop I chose mostly from a phone conversation. Flying Squid answered my call on the first try, which may seem like nothing, but you'd be surprised by how many shops just simply did not answer the phone. Their business etiquette on the phone was great, I asked if they had a specific piercer and they immediately put her on the phone. Makana was able to make an appointment for me that same day, and she also answered any questions I had. Upon arrival, the tattoo shop seems more like a quant little store rather than a parlor, with an assortment of different merchandise in the front of the store. Everyone was very friendly and it was a clean, non-intimidating, homey environment. Makana took me in the back and explained the piercing process in detail and had a very relaxed disposition that really helped calm my nerves. She was so gentle, informative and patient that I almost forgot I was getting a needle shoved through me. On top of that, she did an AWESOME job. Very precise and quick, and made it as painless as it could be, considering. I highly recommend her; she's the bee's knees! read more

I visited this business to get a body piercing. Makana greeted me with a big smile and immediately made me feel right at home. She asked appropriate questions to help me select the right gauge for my nipple piercings. When it came time to pierce me, she had me at ease and coached me through the procedure. If you're looking for a laid back place not packed with people standing around. This is the place. They are friendly and informative. Makana did a great job with my daughter's piercing. Came here to get a tattoo with my fiancé. Matching tattoos. Super cute, right. My fiancé's turned out really good, but I did not have the same experience. My artist was not the same. I called 2 days after my tattoo To explain to the artist that I was not happy. He told me to come back in once it healed and he would "fix it". Well he "fixed it" and now I'm having the whole thing removed. Tattoo removal Is very painful. Not worth it at all. read more

The best tattoo place in Houston, hands down. I've had tattoos by Jay, Dustin, and Ryan and they're all excellent, listening to my ideas and giving advice and they've made it perfect every time. It ended up being one of the best spontaneous decisions we've made in a while. From the moment we stepped in, the vibe was welcoming, upbeat, and full of personality. The shop itself is clean, well organized, and has that classic tattoo parlor energy without feeling intimidating. You can tell right away that the artists here take pride in both their craft and the experience they create for their clients. We were lucky enough to work with Homer, and he absolutely made the experience. He brought such a fun, lively spirit to the whole process and immediately made us feel comfortable. This became a pattern of poor communication and last-minute changes. Meanwhile, I was never sent my tattoo design or kept updated throughout the process. Clients shouldn't have to beg for basic communication or wonder if their appointment is actually happening. There may be talented artists out there, but professionalism and reliability matter just as much. Unfortunately, this experience had neither. After wasting weeks trying to make it work, I requested my deposit back and took my business elsewhere.

The place is kept really clean and Johnny even offered snacks during a break. It's a private studio which is nice because I don't really a big fan of random people popping in while I'm being worked on. 5/5 In depth review of the whole process. Objective: Booking periods happen only so often. I submitted my application with two concept ideas. I received my email October 2nd telling me I was selected for the Feb/Mar cycle. I paid my booking deposit then gave them my availability, they worked with my availability and I was scheduled for March 15th. Once the appointment was confirmed I told them I'm willing to switch appointments if necessary to work around his other clients. My appointment date remained the same but my time was moved to 7am which was nice. Johnny reached out February 16 for a confirmation on the exact design (I kept going back and forth sending in different things) and March 8th I got a courtesy email for my upcoming session. I showed up to the studio and Johnny was finishing up the final design. We talked briefly on the different aspects of shading and line work but I told him that I trusted him because he's the artist and he knows what will probably look best for the final piece. The session was about 6 hours with 3 breaks. Snacks and beverages were provided. The studio itself is open with tall ceilings. It has couches and a long meeting table. The tattoo I got cover parts of my chest, my sternum, some ribs, and my upper abdomen. It was a painful tattoo Subjective: The booking process was really nice and communication from his assistant was nice. I think he got a new assistant sometime after my appointment was confirmed, nothing was wrong with his old assistant but his new one Melanie has a much more welcoming online persona. Her personality in person matches it too. Johnny comes off as a casual laid-back guy. He's nonchalant yet he's very interested in his clients. He gave me a sense of autonomy throughout the whole process. In hindsight I gave him very little to work with and while doing the final touches he was asking me what I liked specifically about the reference pictures. I sent him a couple of pictures of different designs by other artists and it was really nice to know he took them into consideration. I've been to an artist before where I brought in printed references and the artist glimpsed at it then pulled out the sketch he already had before I showed up. While I was being worked on the pain was too much for me to handle in the beginning, given the location and design it's expected to hurt. I asked if I could have a break after the main outline was done and Johnny agreed. I didn't feel any mental resistance from him. He wrapped up the area so I could go outside and get some fresh air. After that I didn't have to ask for breaks, Johnny stopped and gave me two more. I'm not sure how but Johnny knew when I was getting reaching my threshold. Given he's had years of experience I'm sure he's picked up a 6th sense on how to read people. After the main outline was done Johnny stopped and asked how I wanted the rest of the session to play out. I told him I'd prefer to do the top part of my tattoo because I knew the bold lines would hurt more and I personally like having the most painful part of a tattoo done first. Johnny is the first artist to give me that option. Johnny himself as a person is hella cool. During the whole session we didn't talk much which was nice because I just wanted to relax (i'm on spring break from nursing school and my life since august has been studying so I actually don't know how to talk to people anymore lmao). From our conversation Johnny comes off as someone who wants to know his clients. This isn't just another transaction for him. He asked me questions to get to know me but he never pushed me to share. We both shared stories and aspects of lives that were interesting. Melanie went out for a bit and offered to pick something up. Johnny asked if I wanted anything which was really nice and I asked for coffee and a sandwich. When she came back I offered to pay and Johnny told me that he'd pay for it ( johnny is just nice af). This is my opinion but getting a tattoo is only cool after you get it. When I'm getting work done I'm being vulnerable to the public. I'm not a fan of getting work done while random people walk by watching me trying to hold myself together. The whole process is just painful and it sucks. I like this studio because it's just him and his assistance. Overall I had a really great experience. It's only been 4 days but I wake up every morning still in awe at his work. Hubby did enjoy a nice cold beer served in a frosty glass, and that was perfect. Dinner was actually pretty good. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the lobster mac and cheese was tasty, although there wasn't much lobster to be found. Now for the theater itself... The seats are definitely showing their age and are getting a little rickety. Service was almost nonexistent. The one bright spot was a food runner who kindly pointed us to the QR code for the menu and even offered to bring us a printed menu. He was great. We ordered our movie snacks, but that's where things really went downhill. The popcorn was as stale as stale can be, the M&M's tasted old and a little funky, and somehow my club soda came with about four ice cubes and wasn't even very refreshing. The movie itself was good, and we still enjoyed having a much-needed date night together. Overall, though, it's sad to see this theater slipping because it used to be the place to go. I really hope they can turn things around. In the meantime, we'll be on the hunt for a new favorite theater. I'd love to hear everyone's recommendations!

My experience with flying squid and artist catfish was better than I could have hoped. I came to catfish with several ideas of what I was wanting and he drew precisely what I had described. Even better he unexpectedly drew up a second option that was pretty far from what I had planned. He created this version after hearing that I love what the flower of life and sacred geometry represent. I ended up choosing the second version and am pretty obsessed with it. It is perfect in every way. Needless to say I am incredibly thankful catfish took the time to create a second original option for me. As for the actual experience the shop itself was incredibly clean and the staff friendly. I ended up having more friends tag along than I had expected. Instead of making a big deal of my large party catfish was more than accommodating. He made sure everyone had a seat, felt comfortable, and he put on a Netflix documentary. Had to share my wonderful experience at Flying Squid Tattoo and specifically with Catfish. I, along with 2 other friends, had a very special request as we were all getting tattoos in memory of our mothers, who all have recently passed. Catfish was so patient with our thoughts on what we wanted (2 first timers) and listened completely to what we were hoping to achieve. My wife and I are from New Orleans and took an impromptu trip to Houston, in doing so we figured we should get some tattoos. I contacted the flying squid via Facebook messenger and they were prompt and very helpful with their responses. They definitely made us feel valued before we ever stepped in the door. Upon arrival we were greeted by employees wearing masks and gloves and they were extremely hospital and kind. I got a tattoo done by Jeremy, and it met all my expectations. I'd met the proprietor at a community event a few months prior, he was nice and the art was great! I'm completely in love with my new tattoo, and it's not even finished yet. Catfish is an amazing artist, plus he's laid back and empathetic. I have a medical condition that causes my legs to shake when I'm stressed or when my adrenalin is up, and Catfish encouraged me to take as many breaks as I needed and split my tattoo into three sessions to make it easier on me. Highest recommendation for this shop, which is also a legit art gallery. Ryan S and Catfish are great guys and run a great ship with a fine crew of artists. The artwork is superb but so is the service and value. Ultimately when you have been around the block a few times, seen and worn alot of ink, you realize that it is really about the ability of the artist to create and then translate that art onto the flesh. The ability to use and mix color to make a creation unique and the ability of the artist to apply his or her hand and gun correctly. It's in an old house in the Heights, so it's not overly flashy on the outside, but there's off-street parking and the place is incredibly clean inside. Just got a new tatoo for Friday the 13th! This was my first time at this new shop and it was an excellent experience. Catfish was my artist, and I will definitely be back to get more work from him. This was by far my least painful tatoo, a mark of a seasoned professional. Even though it was a small piece on special, he took his time to make it look awesome. All the tattoo artists here are super friendly and great artists. I had Billy as my tattoo artist and he's a super down to earth guy. He has an incredibly light hand and will make sure that your tattoo is absolutely correct and exactly how you want it to be. He gave me a great price for my two tattoos and didn't even want a tip since I'm a broke college student. This man does it right and I have highly recommended him to all my friends thinking about getting a tattoo. 5 stars hands down! read more

This was not my frist tattoo but was by far the best, the shop is clean some of the best guys in Houston are doing it up in this shop. Catfish was complete and perfect straight lines never wasted a minute and always made sure I was comfortable and checked on me me after to make sure healing was ok .Above and beyond all my expectations.Thanks to Catfish and everyone at the shop that makes it happen, don't pass these guys bye if your looking for ink or a pericing. Catfish rocks! I came to him with a bad tattoo done by a not so great artist. I had scaring, faded color, and the lines had bled. We sat down and talked about cover up options, and settled on a bundle of flowers. From the very beginning he had a great attitude and made me feel so excited to get this done. Back for more....I originally went to see Catfish based on a friend's recommendation to finish a tattoo that another artist had done. He finished it and made it come alive back in December. He did such an awesome job, I asked that he create a new piece for me - a Geisha - it turned out fantastic! Just got Catfish to do my second tattoo and I could not be happier. He is a real professional and true artist. We sat down and worked on my design together and inked it today.
