I had been communicating with this tattoo artist on Instagram for months. She offered a buy one get one free tattoo and a raffle for a full sleeve. I was told I won the full sleeve, but it required an $85 deposit upfront. However, after doing some research, I found out that people have been talking about the shop scamming on instagram. She ended up blocking me . I kinda had a feeling from the start so I never went threw with it so be carful and proceed with caution!

On a friend's recommendation, I went in for a simple text tattoo. The artist was annoyed that I "just" wanted text and refused to sketch it out beforehand. Artiste, my ass. At this point I should have left, as the result was crooked and inconsistent. There is no art to this tattoo whatsoever. I was so excited about it and now I am so disappointed. For a shop that has been open for so long, you figure that the product would be much better than it was. Very, very disappointed.

I also suspect human trafficking because guy was really creepy and too friendly for someone who I don't know personally, I came with a friend just in case.

Went in for my first tattoo EVER and I wasn't disappointed. My artist was Daniel, he was super professional, super sanitary and very friendly. He took his time to make sure I was happy with the tattoo placement and that I was fully comfortable before starting. I would highly recommend him and Shaw's!

Best tattoo experience yet! I walked in on a Thursday around 12:30 and Joseph was quick to greet and assist me. I showed him a picture of what I wanted and he told me to come back at 2. When I showed up, he quickly started drawing it up and before I knew it we were started! I got a little light headed and this was my third tattoo, so Joseph had to stop for a bit to let me calm down. He was incredibly understanding and after I drank some water, we powered through the tattoo. Joseph is super talented and has the coolest monster energy tattooing gloves. Visit Shaw's and you won't be disappointed!

Just got some more work done, and I cannot say enough good things! I had some script done, and they did a great job! They also were a very understanding while I delt with the pain. Although my fourth tattoo, I was not prepared for a pain like that!

Had a great experience. Artists were super open to my husband and I's ideas and worked with us to get what we wanted. The prices were fair as well. I won't quote prices since everyone has a variance, due to style/time spent on a piece. Some shops you go in, feel somewhat uncomfortable or out of place but these guys made us feel at home and gave us solid advice on tattoo placement, tattoo ideas, and more. I'll definitely consider this shop again when the itch for a new tattoo settles in.

Honestly not a fan. The tattoo I wanted was pretty hard to mess up, a simple delta symbol. I wanted it blown up to a size that looked good on my body but even after he altered the "stencil" three times, it still came out too small. It felt like a lack of vision on the artists' part. Maybe it was the end of a long day and he wanted to just close up, but really, a perfect version of the tattoo wouldn't take more than five minutes. I wouldn't have minded it as much if I didn't pay $80 for a 1 inch tattoo of essentially a triangle. I have a tattoo that is much more intricate and slightly larger that costed me $60. On top of this all, the ink, months later, still is slightly elevated on my skin. I really expected more.

Daniel did my tattoo and did a great job. I came in with my idea and picture and sketched it on the spot and did my tattoo right then. I didn't have to wait at all. He was very friendly. It is the best tattoo work I have.

I hate to do this because the artists that work there are so nice, but if you're looking to do something small I would go elsewhere. This might be the most awful looking heart I've ever seen unfortunately.

Positive: studio was clean, courteous staff and like my tattoo. Unsure: once I was done they advised I needed to get cash from store next door instead of taking Visa which I had confirmed. I did it but seemed sketchy. Negative: a staff member followed me out to my car and proceeded to ask for my number. Although it was flattering it was not professional and scared me that he followed me down the street. Summary: I had planned to return but not sure I will now. read more

Are you Shaw you want to get a tattoo? Then come to Shaw's! Definitely one of the friendlier tattoo studios that I've used. One of my beautiful girlfriends who is in the adult industry (yep) is covered from her neck to her toes and tattoos and they're some of the sexiest I've seen. She likes to go to different places so she gets lots of different looks and styles. She's had two done here (one of which I paid for), so as I did at 2 or 3 other places, I took her here and held her hand throughout. Fun times. Honestly as friendly as they are, it's one of the least professional tattoos that I paid for. It came out looking a little bit immature. But since they're so friendly and local then I give them a three despite having higher than average prices. read more

I am very pleased with the results of my new tattoo. I walked in on Halloween really looking for a piece that I have had in mind for a long time. I was greeted promptly and after looking at the flash and talking with the artist we agreed on the work to be done. I was really expecting to be asked to make an appointment for a later time, but I was able to get my new work done professionally and cleanly. The shop was very clean with oldies R&B playing in the background. Once the tattoo was completed I was given the aftercare instructions verbally and in writing. When the healing process is done I will update this review with photos. I will definitely consider Shaw's if I have additional work I want done. For a first tattoo I recommend you check them out. read more

DO NOT BOOK HERE! Scammers for sure! I boomed an appoint with an artist via Inatagram off of a deal, all I had to do was send deposit and I was good. Day came and I hit up the artist to confirm details and instantly was blocked and have yet to get my refund. I believe in common decency and this place does not have it at least not the "artist" I dealt with. read more

Getting my first tattoo I wanted the full experience not only did they not ID me, they didn't even care what I actually wanted. I was pressured into getting a big pricier piece and rushed out the door. There was no customer service, no receipt and the job definitely seemed off the books - I do not recommend coming here especially for your first art piece. read more

You couldn't pay me to come back here. Overpriced, unclean, and poor craftsmanship are three words that come to mind when I think of Shaw's tattoo shop. Stay away from Davey, he's a real wolf in sheep's clothing. The price I paid and the quality I received were not congruent. If I had some advice about going to Shaw's: DONT. read more

I would not recommend Davy to do the tattoo. My daughters and I went in and there was very little conversation amongst anyone. Both my daughters got a basic line tattoo. Not much detail, very easy. If he couldn't do what my daughter asked for, he should have said so. He didn't do the light gray. If it was a problem he should have said so, but he didn't. The circle is more oval. The lines are not solid, now that it's healing. My second daughter wanted a flower and he drew something that looked like a kindergarten child would have done. He finally drew something acceptable but still isn't the best. And the price was ridiculous but we didn't know any better. Would not recommend at all. They weren't busy the whole time we were there. read more

I went in yesterday as a walk-in and the man there was quick to help me out! I showed him exactly what I wanted and he talked me out of what I was gonna get saying it wouldn't look that good and that it'd be a pain to do the letting and Noone would take the to read it (except he said it much nicer) he got the picture printed and went on with it and was very friendly especially knowing it was my first time! He got it done really quick and did an excellent job at it!! read more

Best you're going to find in Houston. Joseph has been like a brother to me over the last year. I even have his phone number and text him with ideas. I have several tattoos on my body, the majority of which have been done at Shaw's. There's a reason I keep going back: design, customer service, efficiency, flexibility. The girl below me wrote a review complaining of a lack of vision on the artist's part. (She spelled "artist's" incorrectly.) Lady, this was your impulsive vision that you poorly communicated with an artist who doesn't have the power to read your mind. The vision must come from you. The artist doesn't know what you want unless you communicate that effectively. I conveyed exactly what I wanted with Joseph, who has replicated my vision now multiple times through multiple, impressionable designs. I will keep coming back time and time again to Joseph, who is one of the kindest, most honest, down-to-earth, intelligent, creative tattooists I'll ever have the pleasure of knowing. I received my first tattoo at this shop in 2000 for my 40th birthday. In March of 2013, I decided it was time to build off the tribal band and turn into a larger tribal piece covering my shoulder and chest. I meet with Jeremy Robards and he immediately worked up a free hand design and we started the work. He completed it in 2 sessions and I could not be happier with the results. In July I went back to see Jeremy (aka Remy) to discuss another piece I wanted to do - a Japanese style featuring a sumuria warrior. I showed images of what I had in mind. He worked up a few design ideas which he e-mailed to me within a few days. When I went into the shop, we then finalized the design and he started the piece. We've completed the outlining and I'll be returning in a week to begin the coloring and background. I highly recommend working with Jeremy. read more

I visited Shaw's Tattoo randomly the weekend of my birthday in December. I have to say it was the best decision I've ever made when deciding to get a tattoo at a parlor I've never been before. I've had my tattoo now for a little over three months and I love it just as much as when Joel Macías finished it. It may have been a cold day in December but Joel definitely put the icing on the cake of my birthday weekend. I highly recommend Joel for his attention to detail and speed. My tattoo looks as fresh as it did the day I got it!! Thanks Joel for everything! read more

When checking the pricing, she kept looking at her phone but would quickly lock the screen before I could actually see the breakdown. Later, I checked online and saw the front piece listed around the $170 range without tax ( they don't tax you at all after purchasing). Even if the back was an additional charge of $15, it still seems like I may have been overcharged by about $5-10. After I left, I called to ask about the pricing and was told the back post was not included -- which was never explained during the purchase. What also wasn't explained is that the back post itself is not gold either. Had I known that beforehand, I honestly wouldn't have purchased it because I have seen both the front and back in matching gold for around the same price. Now I'm stuck with a mismatched jewelry piece, it's not actually fully gold, and it's probably final sale. Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of transparency regarding both the pricing and the jewelry details.

Both were not including the tip amd both were finished early. I'm a novice so maybe these deceptive practices are the norm. Also...DO NOT let them convince you to sign the document that they give you upon arrival without them filling in the price first. Have a meeting with one of the artist for a sleeve that they've quoted $4000 to be broken up into visits. Yeah, that's out of the question now.

The place is kept really clean and Johnny even offered snacks during a break. It's a private studio which is nice because I don't really a big fan of random people popping in while I'm being worked on. 5/5 In depth review of the whole process. Objective: Booking periods happen only so often. I submitted my application with two concept ideas. I received my email October 2nd telling me I was selected for the Feb/Mar cycle. I paid my booking deposit then gave them my availability, they worked with my availability and I was scheduled for March 15th. Once the appointment was confirmed I told them I'm willing to switch appointments if necessary to work around his other clients. My appointment date remained the same but my time was moved to 7am which was nice. Johnny reached out February 16 for a confirmation on the exact design (I kept going back and forth sending in different things) and March 8th I got a courtesy email for my upcoming session. I showed up to the studio and Johnny was finishing up the final design. We talked briefly on the different aspects of shading and line work but I told him that I trusted him because he's the artist and he knows what will probably look best for the final piece. The session was about 6 hours with 3 breaks. Snacks and beverages were provided. The studio itself is open with tall ceilings. It has couches and a long meeting table. The tattoo I got cover parts of my chest, my sternum, some ribs, and my upper abdomen. It was a painful tattoo Subjective: The booking process was really nice and communication from his assistant was nice. I think he got a new assistant sometime after my appointment was confirmed, nothing was wrong with his old assistant but his new one Melanie has a much more welcoming online persona. Her personality in person matches it too. Johnny comes off as a casual laid-back guy. He's nonchalant yet he's very interested in his clients. He gave me a sense of autonomy throughout the whole process. In hindsight I gave him very little to work with and while doing the final touches he was asking me what I liked specifically about the reference pictures. I sent him a couple of pictures of different designs by other artists and it was really nice to know he took them into consideration. I've been to an artist before where I brought in printed references and the artist glimpsed at it then pulled out the sketch he already had before I showed up. While I was being worked on the pain was too much for me to handle in the beginning, given the location and design it's expected to hurt. I asked if I could have a break after the main outline was done and Johnny agreed. I didn't feel any mental resistance from him. He wrapped up the area so I could go outside and get some fresh air. After that I didn't have to ask for breaks, Johnny stopped and gave me two more. I'm not sure how but Johnny knew when I was getting reaching my threshold. Given he's had years of experience I'm sure he's picked up a 6th sense on how to read people. After the main outline was done Johnny stopped and asked how I wanted the rest of the session to play out. I told him I'd prefer to do the top part of my tattoo because I knew the bold lines would hurt more and I personally like having the most painful part of a tattoo done first. Johnny is the first artist to give me that option. Johnny himself as a person is hella cool. During the whole session we didn't talk much which was nice because I just wanted to relax (i'm on spring break from nursing school and my life since august has been studying so I actually don't know how to talk to people anymore lmao). From our conversation Johnny comes off as someone who wants to know his clients. This isn't just another transaction for him. He asked me questions to get to know me but he never pushed me to share. We both shared stories and aspects of lives that were interesting. Melanie went out for a bit and offered to pick something up. Johnny asked if I wanted anything which was really nice and I asked for coffee and a sandwich. When she came back I offered to pay and Johnny told me that he'd pay for it ( johnny is just nice af). This is my opinion but getting a tattoo is only cool after you get it. When I'm getting work done I'm being vulnerable to the public. I'm not a fan of getting work done while random people walk by watching me trying to hold myself together. The whole process is just painful and it sucks. I like this studio because it's just him and his assistance. Overall I had a really great experience. It's only been 4 days but I wake up every morning still in awe at his work. Pros: Johnny is cool Melanie is nice final product is dope snacks privacy Cons: that shit hurted

I bought several thousand dollars of great ink by a great female artist; All of my tattoos done by Ms Kandi are detailed, perfectly executed, and artistic; But now I'll tell you why I will never go back. This old-school tattoo shop could use an atmosphere, better furniture to lay upon(the old chair and bench is like an ancient torture devise); the tattoo feels like tattoos feel; but I was always in pain from the old beat-up furniture the artists have to use to contort the body to tattoo certain areas of the body-there's no way to feel comfortable while being tattooed; they need better chairs; WHAT BOTHERED ME ENOUGH TO NEVER GO BACK was the way the male staff treated the one female worker.In the daytime, Kandi runs a friendly room; she is there 5 days a week;She plays music that is calming, and serves as a baffle that blocks out conversational noise;One forgets about the pain. She is knowledgeable about Fantasy-themed tattoos which require an above average education on the subjects of art, pop culture, and the newest machines that a person can use.She's a perfectionist; BUT the day I stopped going was because I was still being tattooed during a shift change; The night crew were a different breed; they turned off the music and started sounding like a gay-bar-just "dudes" talking VERY LOUDLY about fights, jack-assery-in general... there were sound effects added by the hyper active Allen with gnarly tattooed side-burn looking things;(I think they are meant to be fish tattooed on his face...but I can't tell...)He's very young;Kandi has been tattooing for 17 years; most of the others?-LESS !-HOWEVER there is a big problem that a guy named Dave considers himself to be the "night-manager"; HIS MISOGYNISTIC TONE towards Kani infuriated me; He verbally abused the lady in a smug arrogant way that raised my Ire.He allowed the young inexperienced guy to YELL about a lot of mumbo-jumbo street talk , while he bitched at my artist for taking extra time to meet a special request that I had made. HE TREATED THE LADY LIKE A DOG...AND FOR DISRESPECTING WOMEN, i WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS STUPID GOOD OL' BOY'S CLUB OF DERANGED GANG-LIFE CHAOS; i EVEN WAS INSULTED BY THE STAFF, and I spent over $500 a week there for a while ! They should fire the "do-nothing manager"-who had to call the boss to ask Kandi a question about moving around,of all things(why didn't he ask her himself?)-tattoo equipment.If he had any management skills he would have told young Allen to lower his voice-they could cut some of the needless garble with some music, and manage in a softer tone in a different room; I don't want to be in the DRAMA of a TATTOO SHOP NIGHTMARE !! CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNT CHARGES!!!! I came here off a whim to get a tattoo before I came back to dallas, the place was in a nice area and looked clean, but looks can sure be deceiving. I came in for some filler tattoos, just something small to fill some empty space in my traditional sleeve. A 4 year old could draw these up but i was told it couldn't be done. My artist davey insisted on a simpler design of a larger butterfly (smaller than a pack of gum) and i was okay with that because it seems like davey specializes in butterflies and probably unicorns. He showed me the stencil, and the agreed apon price was $150. Im not hard of hearing, and I thought $150 was expensive for a black and red butterfly no bigger than a pack of gum, but I agreed with a handshake because it looked like davey could use a new pair of shoes. Back in the old days a handshake was your word, and your word was your bond, apparently times have changed for the worst. I checked my bank account to see a charge for $250 after I had left. I called davey who processed to gaslight me, giving a bad name to shaws tattoo and houston as a whole. Ive had to go to the bank to dispute this charge. read more

Beware!!! Infection!!! My experience from Shaw's has made me question how i look at tattoos all together. I waited inside for about 5 minuets as my artist Davey casually smoked his cigarette, scrolling through his phone. My first sign of uncleanliness was when he didn't was his hands after smoking, but i figured it was okay because he had gloves on. The second sign was the table I was laying on, he didn't wipe it down or wrap it with plastic wrap. When my tattoo was finished, and his gloves were off, he forgot to spread the ointment, so he picked up the gloves his sweaty (& shaky) hands were in and smeared a thick layer onto my fresh tattoo. He then proceeded to tape me up, only to find there was no tape. I asked for some after care ointment. His answer was to point me to a convenience store next door. I am painfully trying to nurse this infected mess back to health in hopes that one day I can get it covered. Davey has ruined my skin and self confidence. read more

I've called the city health inspector to get this place shut down. The health code violations I saw are sickening and downright dangerous. Nothing was sterilized beforehand, there was blood on the floor, open sharps container, ink caps being washed for reuse, bloody napkins still on the work station, there was a homeless man loitering outside who shared a drink with my artist Davey. I got an infection, of course, but now I am going to the doctor to get bloodwork to make sure I don't have HIV. Wish me luck, please send prayers. read more

Don't come here. I suffered under the heavy hand of Dave for far too long. He drew me up a stencil that looked great! If only he could stick to the blueprint. I could smell last nights alcohol and cigarettes on his breath, but it obviously wasn't enough to tie him over for his alcohol withdraw shakes today. I would have the late Muhammad Ali in the afternoon behind the tattoo gun because I might have got straighter lines. read more

Felt compelled to get a tattoo one day and stopped at Shaw's. Davie was working and he drew me up a beautiful representation of what I was thinking. I have gone back to him twice (once to add to my original tat, and once for a piece he drew up for me) and if I weren't moving out of state, I'd probably end up covered. 11/10 would recommend. This tattoo studio is off of a busy street, which Is why I thought it would be reputable. The artwork turned out alright, not as detailed as I wanted but for the price I thought it was fine.
