Tennessee locals here... This was our first time on the Harpeth in years and we had really been looking forward to this day. Foggy Bottoms is a super cute spot with tons of charm and very friendly staff. We arrived to check in (no reservation) at 10:30am and the staff gave us a very honest warning that water levels were SUPER low. They explained the pain points of canoeing in such low water levels very thoroughly, but despite the warnings, we decided to give a go and I'm so glad we did! Because of the staffs transparency, we knew what to expect and we were prepared to encounter a few spots along the way that gave us a little trouble. All in all, it wasn't bad at all! We spent 6 hours on this 3 hour ride making tons of stops along the way to float in the inter tubes we brought along with us. Had such a great time and can't wait to come back! read more

What a perfect escape! It's only 30 minutes outside of Nashville, but feels like a world away. Only $35 for a kayak, $45 for a canoe. I've camped with them and kayaked and it's a great experience all around! Plenty of parking, then they shuttle you to the starting point of the river. Once they get your boat into the water you make your way back and it's just such a gorgeous way to spend a summer or fall day! Pack a lunch and paddle away! Staff is kind. Fellow canoe-ers and kayak-ers are fun to talk to along the way. I think my only complaint would be that many large groups go and sometimes just sit in the middle of the river in a clump and it can be difficult to get around them. That however, is not Foggy Bottoms fault. If you are looking to get outside and do something active I highly recommend you use FB. They are convenient and a great way to spend your day. We've been to Foggy Bottom Canoe twice. Although our first time was great, this time was awful. We waited over two hours from when we checked in - and no canoe came. They were very slow and disorganized. Some people who arrived an hour and a half after us got to go first. The canoe experience itself is lovely and takes around 2-3 hours to go down the river once you're in a canoe. But after waiting hours in the heat and there still being no sign of us getting on a canoe, we got a refund and went home. An especially big disappointment when you've hired a babysitter for the day. I'd highly suggest to their management to either start a reservation system or be more up front if there is a huge wait. I could see we weren't the only people super frustrated by the experience. read more

We didn't have a problem with them at all. We have canoed on the Harpeth River before, but with a different company, and this time we tried Foggy Bottom. They made reservations very easy. Our group that we went with booked first, and we pretty much booked last minute, but got right in. All we had to do was call and reserve a canoe with our name and number. Being the holidays (Labor Day weekend) they got us right in. There are different miles you can do, and we chose the 5 mile ride. It wasn't a bad ride at all. We got dropped off probably around 11 is what I'm guessing, and finished it around 3:00 with 3 breaks. There are bathrooms onsite, and the parking wasn't too bad. We got there around 10:00 am, and it was pretty packed. It was getting full so we just drove to the back. The customer service was good. I have no complaints on the customer service. We pretty much showed up, and checked in at the register. The only complaint I have is that we couldn't pay right when we checked in until all of our group showed up. So everyone in your group has to show up before you can pay. It wasn't a big issue, but I think the lines would've went faster if we could just pay right when we check in. Pretty much you just grab your life jackets or bring your own, and grab a paddle, get on the shuttle, and they shuttle you to drop off. Once dropped off, you just canoe, and you will know when to get picked up because there's a guy out waiting for you. You will see the guy under the bridge. I liked their canoes a lot. The last company that we booked with, their canoe leaked on us lol and we didn't know until we were already down the river and had to deal with pulling over and tipping the boat over to empty the water. No complaints about foggy bottom canoes. They don't leak lol. And we had a big group, no one had a problem with their canoes. Just make sure you bring a lot of water. It will definitely get hot out there! read more

One of the places to have a Sunday funday. Foggy bottom canoeing reservation not needed for a small group. If you want a kayak you will need to make reservation during peak seasons. I had no problems getting a canoe for walk up. They had plenty. We did the 2 hour canoeing instead of the 4 hours since it was after 12. Their last drop off is 2:30 pm. So the morning time usually much more busier waiting in line to check in. They sell snacks and hot dogs for cheap if your looking to eat before the adventure. And bathrooms are available. Parking was tight. Once we check in we got a card and handed it off to one of the guys loading the trailer. We picked out our paddle and life jackets. Then we were drop of the beginning point and our stop was right under the first bridge. Then you will just walk over to your car once done. Staffs were meh...they weren't rude just not much interaction with customer services. read more

Part of getting to know a new place is getting out and seeing it. We have been making an effort to get out and see Nashville since moving here a year ago, stopping a all the "usual" tourist traps. So we were quite happy when we stumbled across Foggy Bottom Canoe rentals. We called ahead and a very friendly lady gave us the excellent advice to show up early. Taking that advice we show up just before they opened and got a canoe. The friendly staff helped us get it in the water and after a little practice we set off down the river. Since we were early it felt like we had the river all to ourselves. The views were amazing and there were several places to stop and picnic, which we will certainly be considering on our next visit. This trip was an amazing example of just how beautiful this state is. The river water level should be considered when taking this trip as we ran into several places where we got stuck, but it didn't take much to free the canoe and continue our adventure. The price was great, the staff was very friendly and helpful and the experience will be a memory we will share for many years to come !!! read more

I participated in a river clean-up event in 2015 on the Harpeth River and the radio station decided to use Foggy Bottom for their water craft rental needs. The location was cute, has a small campground, moderate sized parking lot, and a relaxed atmosphere. It is not a huge organization, so a few things to keep in mind might be: Make reservations well in advance Arrive early (international flight early - if you show flexibility and a relaxed/fun attitude towards the day, it goes a long way with staff and accommodation) Carpool - as mentioned decent size lot, but a busy weekend can quickly overload. We had a terrific experience canoeing the Harpeth River. Small family owned business, everyone was extremely pleasant and helpful. We went at noon on a Saturday and it they were extremely busy. We waited about 20 mins to be shuttles to the drop off and then had to stand in line another 15-20 before we could get in the water which is the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars. Would give them more like a 4.75. I know that atleast two other kayaking companies drop off at that dock which leads to severe congestion, but still, it is what it is. Still, we've used other rental companies around the Davidson County area and Soggy Bottom is easily at the top of the list. Would highly recommend. read more

They have cats. The end. Just kidding but no really they do have cats, do you need to know anything else? They seem to be running a sort of halfway house for kitties and they take donations. I don't know what this has to do with canoeing but who cares! They're doing a good thing. Anyway we decided to avoid the weekend crowds and go on a Wednesday. When we called them up on Tuesday night to reserve a canoe they said that we were the only people at that point to even make a reservation. We got there early to try to get out on the river before the heat of the day and I'm sure glad we did. Good lord we couldn't have picked a better day! Not too hot, lots of breeze and passing clouds. Although I did burn the tops of my knees, we didn't roast out there. They have different trip options with varying lengths at affordable prices and the nice thing is they have an army of 'dudes' to haul the canoe in and out of the river for you. They provide life jackets but no instruction on how to canoe, although we didn't ask. Honestly though, it is self explanatory and really you don't learn how to do it until you are actually in the boat experimenting anyway. I highly recommend bringing lunch, hat and water. I don't recommend swimming because the Harpeth runs up against lots of farm land, which means lots of run off, which means lots of pollution. It's very very pretty, if not a little trashed - we saw a bunch of tires and bud light beer cans. It's mostly quiet and in some places all you can hear is the breeze and water. For how close this is to Nashville, I can't help but recommend it. Go during the week or get there early before the drunkies show up. We were the only people on the river except for another couple with their own kayaks. read more

I had a terrible experience going canoeing at Foggy Bottom Canoe. I would give it negative stars if I could. I went there today, 05/29/21, with my mom and my brother. We thought it would be a good idea if the three of us took a canoe because then my mom could sit in the middle and enjoy the view. The lady at the check-in counter who had us sign waivers and even the ppl there who dropped us off and brought us the canoe should know better that their canoes couldn't keep balance if three adults got on. It was a disaster waiting to happen. Soon as we were afloat, the current pushed us off a couple of hundred feet before it tipped over. We had no help. I had to walk my mom in the water against the current to bring us to where we had started. There was no other way around. It took a lot of effort. I got bruises on my arms, my legs. My mom was hurt. She couldn't move her feet. She was in a state of shock. This could have easily been avoided. This was an absolute waste of time and money, and the sad part is I can never take my mom canoeing again because of the experience she had over here. If Foggy Bottom Canoe Rental is reading this, please let this be a lesson. As a courtesy gesture, the least they can do is give us the money back. And for anybody else reading this. If you take your safety seriously, my sincere advice would be that you stay away from this place. Thank you. read more

I booked in advanced (4 days prior) for an 11am time slot for 3 canoes, 3 kayaks and a put in for 2 of our kayaks. We got there at 11am and waited TWO HOURS (that's two game of throne episodes y'all!) to just get onto the shuttle. That's NOT even in the water. We got dropped off at the put in and had to wait another 45 mins to get actually launched. Also when I called to book, they told me that the put in cost for our own kayaks was $15 each. When I got there they had "just raised their rates to $20 each" - what kind of business practice is that?!? This place is ran by 15-17 year old dudes who give two craps and just look dumbfounded. I literally had to keep asking our guide to get our yaks/canoes in the water. This is our future generation of clueless, lazy broskis who I'm sure get their college paid for entirely by their parents. Will never go back to foggy bottom - garbage business. read more

It was so relaxing and easy enough for beginners. I loved that you are allowed to go at your own pace. We stopped and took some pictures on the sides or wherever we can park our canoe. Our first reservation fell through at Canoe Music City (literally no one showed up to work there and we waited an hour with 30 other people...) so we were told by someone to try here. Glad we did, even with it being ridiculously busy we were able to get in and get out on the water within around an hour wait in a great atmosphere they had set up. Best place I've rented from I think. Forgot sunscreen? They have it at a reasonable price. Want to leave your keys? They provide that service for free. Want to hear a story about a stray cat? They got you covered. The driver dropped us off and carried roughly half of the canoes down to the water for our van load. Map and picture of where you're going to be picked up? Covered. The prices were a bit high on memorial day weekend, I'm not sure if they're that all the time or not, but from start to finish this was the most well set up place I've gone. The only thing to keep up with is if you've rented a kayak, make sure they know it as the vans are pre-loaded with canoes. We almost got started and my kayak had been missed. Not something to worry about missing unless you were seriously pre-gaming the trip. One thing in general to note, a lot of people don't realize that "Canoe" means "Divorce" in many languages. If you have not canoed, or you're with someone who has not, make sure you know what you're doing. The quick rundown is person in back controls 80% of the steering. paddles closer to the boat = power forward, paddles out = turn. The other person in the boat is not your enemy. If you can't handle frustrating learning curves or don't want to risk losing a friend, get a kayak. They're light, easier, and the ones for non-professionals do not hold you in if you flip... you fall out the same as with a canoe. read more

Great little place! Fair prices, nice service even when they were SLAMMED. My canoe-mate forgot sunscreen (and I had just pre-lathered up in SPF 1 million, so I didn't have to pack it) and we expected to be ripped off buying it there, but guess what? Only 3 bucks! They were nice and knowledgeable about the river, we asked about a few little places we had a major spill last year and they told us not to worry it had washed away, thanks guys! They had a wide variety of trips for families with kids (2 miles, 1 hour) to longer trips for the more adventure-some. All were priced accordingly. Another bonus, unlike having to pay extra across the street to leave your car keys in a locker, Foggy Bottom has a sign actually begging you to leave your keys behind while they watch them for free. Its the little things people ;) They also sold $2 'redneck dry boxes' aka old deli take out containers! Great idea and I got a good laugh out of it. Cute family environment, lots of kiddo's and a gal at a stand selling treats for a buck. They also have a great friendly cat named Wilma, sold! These are really fine folks to give your business to. My wife and I bought our own canoe about a year ago, due in large part to the pleasure we got from our multiple times renting with Foggy Bottom. Everyone who works here is laid back and pleasant to talk to, and they keep the shuttles to the put-in points running at a brisk pace, making for very bearable wait times even on busy days. Also, if you have your own canoe/kayak and want to do a solo float down the river, or if you are with someone but only want to drive a single car (rather than doing the 2-car put-in and take-out point tango), they will shuttle your boat for you for $10-$15. They offer a small variety of treks, from short lengths of the river to several-hour 7-mile sections. If memory serves, these trips run anywhere from about $30 to $50. You have to get there early in the day (before noon, I think) to do the longer treks, since you are supposed to be off the river before evening time. The routes are really beautiful stretches of the Harpeth River, lined in several places by dramatic bluffs, and on occasion with gravel banks. It is really worth the effort, I think, to drag along a butterfly chair or two with you to sit by the riverside and enjoy the scenery every now and again, not to mention the contents of the all-but obligatory cooler which you have in tow, as well. read more

Very friendly, very affordable canoe rental shop on the Canoe highway that is Hwy 70 in Pegram. They were completely wiped out in the great flood on 0'10, but they are back in business. Prices are considerably lower than the competition and the canoes are perfectly fine for the recreational canoe-er (pretty sure that's not a word.) Me and the family spend a day on the river recently instead of trying to fight the crowds at the Germantown festival. We all agreed that we made the right choice (even my wife who fell out of the canoe). So if the weather is nice and you feel like getting a little away from it all I would highly recommend foggy bottom. read more

My largest complaint here is that despite starting at noon, they did not allow our small group to do the four hour route. Anyone who is paying $40 bucks to rent a canoe should have the choice to use it for more than 2 hours. We had plenty of time to finish a longer route (5 hours) , I just don't understand why we couldn't do it. read more

First time here. My son and I did one of the longer trips. The pickup and drop went fine. Equipment was good. Price was right. They provide a ziplock for your phone and store your car keys if you want. And yes, you should. As the guy said, "there are a lot of keys on the bottom of that river." We went on Friday. We had a great time canoeing today. The staff is friendly and the facilities are fine. The drop-off was as expected, but the return was not good. You have to walk across a busy intersection and then along the hwy to get back to your car. This place is pretty awesome. We did the 3.5 hour canoe trip, and although it was quite the workout, it was so much fun! My only complaint is that the water sometimes is pretty low and we got stuck quite a bit. So if you plan to go, I'd recommend the kayak's over the canoes because they seemed to get stuck less. Visited Foggy Bottom today for the 5 mile canoe trip. Staff at the sign up desk was very friendly, but the rest of the customer service was pretty poor. It took about 45 minutes of standing around before we were able to get into the boat. All the while, the young gentlemen that were dropping our canoes into the river were telling each other stories of yesterday's "bit*h" customers and arguing over which one of them would perform which duties. The 5 mile ride was pretty though not very shaded. There were signs letting us know that the river was low and we might scrape the bottom. Was it ever low. We had to get out and push ourselves off rocks and sandy bottom multiple times. I'd pick another canoe livery but would go back to the same river. EDIT: I heard from the business owner who was very concerned with my review. He has taken the complaints into consideration and is rectifying the issues. I feel as though this was an isolated incident and will now recommend and probably return to try them again. read more

A friend and I rented kayaks here last fall and had such a fun time!! They were so friendly and accommodating. The river was pretty low, but we were still able to have a great trip down the river. We have been to this place at least 5x.. I LOVE IT! We have been to several float spots and nothing compared. They are so friendly and the owners are so personable. Celebrities use Foggy Bottom to kyake or canoe.. The water is always calm, usually always up and is pretty clean. Now. The name foggy bottom is just that, the river is foggy and it is the Harpeth river. Happy canoeing or kyaking.. Be safe and no booze allowed, better disguise it if you bring it! read more

NOPE I cannot recommend this place based on my experience. Very disappointing. Admittedly according to the majority of the reviews here I did have very high expectations. However, there are several factors that this business will claim to be "out of their control" and they will render no apology, nor good will customer service responses to someone who expresses disappointment and a spoiled birthday. Here's what happened to us: We wanted to take the most scenic route so we opted for the four hour option. We also wanted to have dinner plans back in Nashville for the evening. Not a big stretch based on the location. Unfortunately it was a mess. We called the business days ahead of time and requested a reservation. They declined and said we would be just fine. Unfortunately we arrived at the same time as about 70 other people. Around 10:15/10:30am. After 30 minutes and we complained they said we would be on the next van. 40 minutes after that statement and several vans departing in front of us, we still were not on and had no idea when we would get on. The signage indicating a late fee if you weren't off the water by 6pm left us knowing this would no longer be a relaxing birthday outing after all. When the business could not give us an estimated time when we would be picked up from the end of our float to get back to our vehicle via their shuttle, we decided to cancel. Very disappointing customer service. We will try another outfitter next time and hope for better luck. All that being said, definitely don't go anytime you are expecting crowds or if you have any sort of time constraint. Two stars because it did appear they have good equipment. read more

We came here for the canoeing because it was the best rated on the river, and were not disappointed! The people there are so friendly and helpful, they got us out on the river real quick and let us be on our way. We didn't have any trouble, even though it was our first time on the Harpeth. It's an easy ride down and many people were stopped on the side, having picnics and fishing. The canoes were reliable, the lifejackets were clean and good quality. We got to the end of our route and were promptly picked up by the Foggy Bottom guy. If you can, help him out- he deserves a break! He pulled up 5 canoes when we were there. REALLY FUN. Maybe this is really a review for canoeing on the Harpeth River. Go and do it if you haven't. We had a group of 15 people and it was comedic and memorable. I made a reservation, but when we got there they said, "OH, we forgot to tell you on the phone that you can't make reservations on Saturday after 2:00." So my group had to wait. But aside from that, the staff was really friendly and helpful. The canoes were in good shape - very important. They had a variety of runs you could take.
