Impressive is the only word to describe the restaurant itself. The building is striking and has a massive interior that also feels elevated and grand. Fogo has its service down to a science and seating as well as waiter service is pretty seamless. I was surprised that attentiveness to refilling water and anything other than meat was not up to the standard that I have experienced at other Brazilian steakhouses. The meat itself was plentiful, however, more inconsistent than I would have liked. One serving of Filet Mignon was delicious, flavorful and perfectly cooked, while the next was surprisingly overly cooked (to the point of not being tasty or even chewable). Salad bar is impressive and offerings were fresh and varied. I would have liked a few more protein options in the salad bar (such as fish or shrimp). I've been to a few of this Brazilian chain around the world and nothing beats this home base location. The view was beautiful and service was responsive. The options were vast, the flavor was unlike others that I've tried, and I absolutely liked the other locations. Besides the meats they brought out other rodizio options I've never had before and I genuinely enjoyed it. They also had good bottles of red wines that couldn't be resisted. My first time at Fogo De Chão and it is in Brazil so I had high expectations since everyone loves this place in the US. I did not love it. Considering the price I did not get enough of the meat servings when the waiters came around. I had the green circle flipped. They came to my friends and bypassed me if I was not looking at them. I thought the circle handles if you want more food. You can check it out if you are visiting but I would not be dying to return. The ambiance was okay though. And the servers were friendly. But I think I missed most of the options during the Full Experience. I had to eat off of my friend's plates at times if the waiter skipped me. read more

Incredible views of the bay and acucar as mentioned in other reviews. Arrive early for a pre meal caipirinha on the deck, particularly at sunset. Do be afraid to ask the servers for meat choices you like or ones that you missed and they will promptly bring it over. Note dessert is extra (sobremesas) as is coffee. It's expensive for a Brazilian restaurant but when you compare it to NYC steakhouse its a great sitting. The mixed meat all you can eat dinner is 140 reis so about 40 a person. They had filet mignon, prime rib, ribs, sausages, chicken hearts (a bit too exotic for me to try) but all and all great quality grilled food. They also have the sides all you all you can eat so plenty of rices, potatoes, assortment of salads, cheeses/cold cuts, beans, etc. Only knock is I wish they offered more sauces to pair with the meats. read more

They have Fogo de Chao in LA so you can expect it to be fairly similar in Rio, but with some variations in the salad buffet section, the alcohol, and the dessert menu. I'm no meat connoisseur, but the meat tasted pretty similar to the meat in the LA Fogo de Chao from what I remember in the two times I've been. The difference is the service. I remember the Fogo in LA having fantastic, fun service, but I will say that this is the only restaurant in my time in Brazil that was a disappointment in service. Every other restaurant we went to was top-notch service. We actually got recommendations from two people--one born and raised in Rio and the other who recently went to Rio--to actually go to a place called Churrascaria Palace for our indulgent churrasco meat fest dinner. But it seemed further from our hotel and the location of Fogo fit perfectly with our schedule as it is located at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar, the other popular tourist spot 2nd to the Christ statue). Don't get me wrong, the food was fantastic. The meats were delicious and the buffet salad bar items were great, but, again, if you've been to the one in LA, it won't be any revelation. The caipirinha I had was okay, but TBH it kinda tasted better from the street kiosks along Copacabana Beach. The dessert was amazing though--I had this molten cake filled with dulce de leche instead of the normal chocolate you get here. Orgasmic!! My problem was that the meat guys kept avoiding our two-person table! All the servers actually avoided us, except at the very beginning when we ordered our drinks. And yes, they ALL spoke English, and yes my hubs also can speak Portuguese. And no it wasn't because we are Americans that want fast service vs. the South American relaxed, slower service standards--we got used to that by this point and were willing to chill there all night! We didn't try some of the meats because we could never get them to come over. I kept moving the green card around different parts of the table to get their attention!! I WAS DESPERATE, don't judge. One time, we caught one of the meat guys and told him what we wanted with no results. We kept getting the same 4 guys with the same meats, but we saw and knew there were so much more. At some point, ALL the meat guys stopped coming to us COMPLETELY despite us wanting more. Even from the interaction with the host at the beginning who led us to our table, I was immediately off-put by the demeanor and inattentive, unwilling vibe. That overall vibe kinda continued through the night. We kept coming up with theories. At first it was like, we prolly didn't order enough alcohol or they like bigger groups. Then it turned dark like, is it coz we're gay and all these male servers are homophobes? And then we were like, is it coz they're all white Brazilians and they think I'm from a favela? But then we eventually settled on the deduction that since we have big appetites and we kept finishing our meats and wanting more, they were trying to cut us off coz they were losing money LMAO. THE THINGS THAT GO THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU WANT ATTENTION, my gah. We spent about $131.61 for two people (3ish real: 1 us dollar exchange rate), both getting the full churrasco experience on a Saturday, adding on two alcoholic drinks and two desserts, which I know is a bit cheaper than would be in LA, but still, improve ya dang service for that cost!! Clientele-wise, I would say Fogo de Chao in Rio seemed filled ONLY with tourists, especially older and whiter ones. The folks who recommended Churrascaria Palace both gave me the impression that Churrascaria Palace was a bit younger (they're both my age--30s) and more diversified with locals. Of course I haven't been, but that's the sense I got from the folks recommending to me. Choose which suits you best, no guarantees!! Last thing, you do not need to dress up for this place even though it looks like it and even if you would dress up for Fogo de Chao in LA. We thought we had to do like casual LA style, that is, relaxed chino pants, loafers, and short-sleeve collar shirts, so we dressed up a tiny bit even though that meant wearing those clothes on Sugarloaf Mountain for the sunset (and of course sticking out). Even in those casual clothes, I felt we were a bit overdressed LMAO. Since it's mostly tourists, they come in shorts and t-shirts--and not the nice type of shorts and shirts. But, if you wanna put effort into it, go for it, it makes for nice photos. My recommendation is to go up to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in nice clothes to watch the sunset and get some great sunset photos and then go straight to your churrascaria dinner--wherever you decide to go. Even though we stuck out a bit on the Mountain and in the restaurant, we didn't regret it one bit because we got beautifully romantic sunset pics that looked like engagement photos followed up with great date-night photos in front of the restaurant!! read more

When asking several people, including the driver, what would be the best restaurant in Rio, the unanimous decision is Fogo, so we had to try it even though there is one smack in the middle of Addison, TX and soon to be in Plano too. The quality of meats and level of service is several notches above their location in Addison location (but Father's Day 2017 will still be celebrated there). Lives up to the quality you expect from this well-loved chain. Ambiance: Don't judge this place from the outside or the neighborhood which is pretty seedy (though I'm assured it's quite safe). Very quiet and upscale inside. Spacious dining inside with a nice bar deck outside that overlooks the marina. Service: A little hit and miss. The non-meat servers were always around and happy to offer help. The rodizio servers often overlooked our table which was in the corner. Finally we had to ask for them to take more attention to us and they apologized and from then on we never had a problem. Food: Rodizio-style (unlimited servings of meat carved at your table) with a fantastic salad buffet. Honestly, I could go back just for the salad-only option (which did have quite a few meat and fish options). The meat itself was divine and you could always be assured of a done-ness that matched your preference. They also provided a handy card that listed the over 20 cuts/types they offered. Price: Okay, so it's not cheap (it was about US$60 per person that included the extras of wine and dessert), but definitely the best place in town. I know. I know what you're thinking... Why the hell would I go to Fogo de Chão when in Brazil, when I can just get this in any big city in the States? Because, yes, one could argue that Fogo de Chão is the type of ubiquitous, high-end chain you find advertised in the back of an in-flight magazine, with a list of US cities in all caps (one of which is surely your final destination), the type that less savvy travelers rely on rather than doing their research ahead of time. And while that admittedly obnoxious statement manages to stereotype/ridicule both a successful restaurant business and a horde of completely harmless tourists, yes, there's some truth to it and I shamefully agree. (Which shouldn't be a surprise, since, you know, I wrote it.) Anyway, the short answer as to why I came here was because it was a group outing and I wasn't part of the party planning committee. But after coming here (and because I apparently love talking to myself), I should really be asking why the hell shouldn't I go to Fogo de Chão, especially in Brazil, where the establishment reflects the culture in which it resides. Now, this isn't like going to Outback Steakhouse in Australia or Olive Garden in Italy. You would never see a native citizen be caught dead in either of those, namely because they are inauthentic and, well, borderline exploitative. Meanwhile, Fogo de Chão is well-regarded in Rio, teeming with Brazilians, and readily recommended and regarded as one of the best steakhouses in town. So, let's be clear here: I'm the asshole. While I never doubted its deliciousness, perhaps I saw Fogo de Chão as some lazy way out versus looking for some sandpit speakeasy hidden underneath beach volleyball plots on Copacabana (which I get a cut of if someone reads this and manages to pull that shit off). No, I'm the asshole who wrote off Fogo de Chão in America as being unauthentic Brazilian cuisine, until I came to a Fogo de Chão in Brazil to realize how authentic this place really is. If you're unfamiliar with the format, waiters with skewers the size of seven-year-olds circle the restaurant offering up various meats tableside, each cut better than the next. You flip a two-sided coaster from green (go) to red (stop) when you start to get the meat sweats, and then of course, back to green when you get that second wind. Because I have zero self-control and equate flipping red to raising a white flag, this is not a very healthy environment for me. From the picanha to the pork loin to the chicken hearts (hell yeah, I ate the chicken hearts), it all blurred together into one glorious meat fever dream. While I would never survive a world that serves every meal like this, it's a fine dive into gluttony on occasion. And despite my exclusion from said planning party committee, I'll admit, in terms of group dining, Fogo de Chão is hard to beat. This is mostly because everyone is on their own meat adventure without groupthink sabotaging an optimal order, but also because the Rio location looks like a swollen spaceship from the outside and has real estate for days. It might be nice to begin with a round of caipirinhas on the outdoor lounge out back which overlooks the marinas of Botafogo Bay, at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. It might also be nice to not assume this place is for super basic people with deep pockets, and instead enjoy endless rounds of meat at a global luxury brand name restaurant in an ultra-endemic setting. We had to have some Brazilian BBQ while in Brazil. Despite having more locations in the US than Brazil, we decided to check out Fogo de Chao in Botafogo based on recommendations from native Brazilians and expat Americans alike. My wife and I arrived sans-reservations at ~730pm since we heard they aren't big on reservations in Brazil. 730pm, by the way, is extremely early for dinner time by Brazilian standards. As such, we were seated immediately. We were also served with a place setting, menus, drink orders, and french fries/other potatoes extremely quickly. It was so fast that I forgot, for a moment, that we were in Brazil, where things happen at much more of a relaxed pace. I did a quick lap of the salad bar and grabbed a few items, making sure that I didn't fill up too much on the items here. I got a small sampling of prosciutto, cheese, beat and caesar salad. All of this was fine, but it's really secondary for what was to come. It was now time for the main event! I flipped my disk from red to green, and it was go time! Within minutes, I got hit up with roasted banana, sausage, and chicken hearts. Then, the beef arrived. So. Many. Cuts. Honestly, it was all a blur since the cuts came and went so quickly, and I couldn't understand the Portuguese terms for Rib Eye, Top Sirloin, Bottom Sirloin, etc. Ultimately, It didn't matter. If it came to me, I ate it! It was yummy. I took a few breaks by flipping to red. But then, a new cut would show up, and I'd have to ask coach to put me back into the game by flipping back to green! Soon, my desire for value and deliciousness came into conflict with the comfortableness of my pants around my waist. So, what did I do? I ate more, obviously! So dang good. Apart from the food, there's a great view of Pão de Açúcar on the terrace outside. My wife and I would have loved to sit here, but it was pouring rain the night we went. Nevertheless, we stood outside after dinner to check it out. Post-visit, I learned that Fogo de Chao is a NASDAQ listed public company based in the US. Of course while in Rio we had to try the original Fogo de Chão. No Brazilian steakhouse in the States can compare to the Brazilian steakhouse in Brazil. The decor was beautiful inside and outside. Goodness, I cannot recall the name of our waiter but he is in the picture. He was super awesome! We liked him lots. Well as you know they are constantly bringing around cuts of meat as long as your card is on and they stop once your card is off. We tried everything. My favorite was the chicken and prime rib. The only negative was the food was a little salty to me. The only negative was the strawberry caipirinhas tasted like cough syrup. The passionfruit were awesome as always. Make a reservation! We went for an early dinner on a Sunday, ~4:30 so our hotel concierge told us no reservation necessary. We waited 30-40 min for our table for 2. The following day, we ate at Porcao (the one near Sugarloaf) which had a nice view, but didn't seem as clean & hip as Fogo which is newer. I don't remember what we paid, but it was reasonable for unlimited beef. Buffet had a good variety, but of course, keep the buffet items to a minimum. They brought out multiple cuts of beef, some pork & chicken. Nothing really exotic, which was what I was hoping for in Brazil. They give you a card which shows which cuts they can give. Contrary to some reviewers, we found the waitstaff quite attentive. The table next to us had a serious-looking chubby dad and his family...he looked pretty experienced and turned away a lot of stuff. The waiters reacted quickly by bringing the good cuts much earlier than they did for us. So reserve a table, bring your appetite, an unimpressed disposition and you'll have a good time. read more

The meat was delicious, and the quantity of self-serve sides was unbelievable, but compared to other Fogo de Chão-type restaurants I've been to, this one was poorly organized and extremely crowded (even for a late lunch at 3pm). The buffet line was a constant battle with people going every which way, and the waiters didn't care to follow the concept of the red and green cards that signaled our interest or disinterest in being served more meat. We followed protocol with the cards, but even so the waiters stopped at every person in our group to try and serve us more meat. It became increasingly frustrating to say "No" every two minutes, when the cards should have spoken for us (and for some of us, the lack of space on our plates could have given a clue!). The least stressful part of this meal was the aperitif on the terrace, with several platters of crispy parmesan polenta fries and pão de queijo (cheese puffs). No sooner have you finished your first bite and three more options appear. And then the sides start showing up: home made potato chips, fried bananas, and other tasty accompaniments. After 45 minutes of devouring beef, chicken, pork, lamb it was time to surrender with no room for desert, and for that matter no room for dinner either. The best Brazilian Steakhouse in Rio. If you are debating on going to this place or others in the area, come here. You won't regret it. Yes, this is an international chain (Brazil, Mexico, USA). Yes, the headquarters are in the United States (moved there in 2015). BUT The quality of the food, service, drinks, ambiance, and view are unbeatable. Some other steakhouses try to push lots of fish or chicken on you - not here. The cuts of meat are unbeatable, the waiters are extremely attentive, and the views of Botafogo and Pão de Açúcar are incredible. Ambiance - Spacious with lots of natural light and a great waterside location. I subtract a star because the stench from the water on the patio was horrible. Like a shit-house door on an old tuna boat. Food - Quality as you'd expect in Rio with plenty of the better cuts offered during dinner. if you've been to fogo in the states then there is absolutely no need to go to fogo in brazil. why? because fogo is actually much better in the states (considering hq is in texas). now onto the food... the only item worth raving about is the pao de queijo, other than that, the meat was ok (i found some to be flavorless and tough), the salad bar was actually quite disappointing. not much variety and there are even some empty slots at the salad bar that could'e been filled. usually fogo has a grandiose salad bar display, but not here. there are other better churrascaria in town, don't waste your stomach on fogo de chao. i found most people dining at the restaurant to be tourists, just like me! shocking, i know ;) read more

I come from Dallas, TX, and a Brazilian colleague recommended that even though we have the Fogo chains in the US, we needed to come to this location while we were in Rio due to the location and extra variety of meat cuts. We obliged and made a reservation for Saturday evening, with a special request to sit facing the waterfront. The view is quite nice at night, with the lights of the opposing coast, but I think the only extra cut of meat we were offered was the chicken heart (which was actually one of my favorite offerings of the night). The salad bar was average for Fogo, and the service was good. However, if you're an American visiting in town, I'd skip this Fogo and try something that's only available in Rio. read more

Loved it! Came here with a group of friends as one of my last meals in Rio and did not regret it. Plus apparently it was almost half the price of what I'd pay if I had gone in NYC. I still dream of come of the cuts today. As you know, starve yourself beforehand and don't go crazy on the appetizer buffet. Oh by the way, most of the appetizers were really awful, really. We ate here 3 times and had 3 different experiences. Overall it is a very nice place with high quality meats and salad bar, good wine list and location. Service, quality and generosity with the more expensive cuts carried greatly. I would recommend but request the neat list menu when you arrive and demand the cuts you want. Otherwise they'll stuff you with the cheap stuff and wait for your stomach to halt. read more
