On a weeknight, my husband and I placed a takeout order for dinner. We drove over. I was behind the wheel, and he hopped out to pick up since street parking on Harrison can be tough. Folklore has nice taco options for vegetarians. The hibiscus (flower) taco with slaw was so good. It's flavorful and hearty, and a satisfying meat alternative. We also tried the mushroom-spinach tacos with onion and cilantro; next time I would try this one with the slaw or ask for hot sauce or something to spice it up because it's fresh and good, but it paled in compared to the flavors of the hibiscus tacos. It's fresh ingredients and you can tell they make an effort in preparing, so I would still give it a higher rating. My husband had the veggie burrito bowl. He said it was filling, but did not have a variety of veggies. I suspect that meat bowls are really good. It could have also been that we ordered towards the end of the night. I am quite disappointed with my UberEats order. Here's what I ordered: Short rib tacos - weird that it had a sweet bbq sauce to it...not what I was expecting and no where does the description include it. It wasn't too bad but the fact that a piece of bone was in my tacos made it all the worse (pic included). From 3-stars to 2-stars. Avoid. Al pastor burrito - I just don't know why it tasted so dry. I tried rotating it so each bite would incorporate all the different components of the burrito but overall, just disappointing. Maybe not enough guac/pico? 3 stars Additionally, I asked for extra salsa but was only given the standard one small cup included with the tacos. Extra salsa would've helped on the burrito so not getting extra salsa was a bummer. Still looking for great Mexican food in the area...have yet to find it and this place most surely wasn't it. Without the snafus, I would rate this place 3 stars. But the bone fragment in my tacos + not providing extra salsa as requested...gotta drop it another star. read more

The chicken bowl was huge and could easily be 2 meals if you wanted it to be. Also ordered short rib tacos and a short rib quesadilla that were fantastic. Standing outside this small "toco" restaurant you might think it's not worth trying. The decorations are at a minimum and you might just walk by without a second glance. GO INSIDE ! You will wonder what you have been eating all along thinking it was Mexican food. This is homemade food at its finest. The waitress was simply a breath of fresh air not your typical toco pusher. I placed an order through Door Dash because I'm visiting my family from Los Angeles. Everyone is working from home today and I didn't feel like driving. I ordered the short rib tacos and they did NOT disappoint!!!!! My daughter in law and LOVED THEM! They live in Montclair and asked me to txt them the name of this restaurant so I did. Lovely establishment. Very peaceful. The horchatas were served in these huge beautiful designed clay glasses and was so hearty and delicious it was like a meal in itself! We came to this eatery after all of the good things that I read on Yelp. The location is small, but the food is VERY GOOD. The staff gave us time to look over their menu, which had meat and veggie options. The decor is very Mexican and well placed throughout the restaurant. We ordered Burrito Bowls and they did not disappoint. The chicken was shredded, the shredded cheese was amazing, and the entire bowl was DELICIOUS. They place the actual bowl in a very nice holder, which made the meal more enjoyable. First time at Folklore with my friends. We went as a big group for lunch over a weekend. The service was quick and we tried a lot of the dishes on the menu from Guac, burrito bowls, corn, quesadillas etc. I would overall rate the food 3/5, good but not fantastic. The service and staff get a 1/5. Firstly this is not a kid friendly restaurant, no high chairs were provided. Secondly the staff did not come across friendly. They were rude and came across very difficult to talk to. Thirdly, some of the chairs had nails popping out and my friend ended up hurting herself from the chair, and the staff did not even bother with first aid or not even empathetic about the situation. She hung up on me a couple times while I was on hold but she finally got my answer. I ordered the mushroom and spinach tacos and chips with salsa. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and the lady asked if I was picking up. I told her my name and she grabbed my food. It came to $15.94 total. When I got in I dug in and the chips were good with the dip. Did they change owners? Because I used to order from them and the tacos were the best I've ever eaten - fresh, and so flavorful! Today I ordered the mole burrito bowl and what a disappointment! Where was the mole?? Chipotle has more flavor than what I just ate. I ordered through Grub Hub and the order arrived with my container crushed and half of the food spilled out into the bag. I called the restaurant, and they wouldn't take any responsibility saying the driver mishandled the bag, which he denied. The container did seem carelessly put in the bag, so what was once a round container, arrived in the shape of an oval. But the biggest disappointment was that this dish wasn't the traditional mole I'm used to. Big letdown. read more

The beef was well seasoned the nachos had the right amount of beans, pico, cheese, guacamole, the chips were well cooked and held up well under all the goodness. I was satisfied. Tacos are great and because people realize this, there are quite a few places to go to get some. Unfortunately I can't say this is the first choice I'd make to get some. It's unfortunate as the place the look and the name. A long time bookmark of mine. So what happened? To start the service was a bit on the eh side. When I walked in it took several minutes before anyone acknowledged me. Thus s backed by the fact there were about 5 people behind the counter/in the kitchen. I made eye contact with a few people but they went about their business, I can understand if their english is weak and not wanting to interact but maybe alert the staff who can communicate it well. Also no one was in the restaurant but me at the tine. Next was the prices. A bit on the high side - I had 4 short rib tacos for $10, they really weren't very full tacos either. Great presentation but really were more like appetizers. They also charge extra for cheese. Speaking of appetizers chips and guac. Will run you $7 quite high, not bad but overpriced. So again the place looks nice and has a decent selection but for me it stopped there. Defintely better taco spots around and unfortunately one which is right in West Orange - Benji's. read more

It's phenomenal, easily the best tacos I've had on the east coast! They have a lot of different options when it comes to types of tacos. I've tried the Mula and the special cheese tacos. What the Yelp?! Maybe I caught them on a bad night, because I was completely underwhelmed! After reading all of the wonderful reviews, I decided to take a trip to Folklore to see what all the hype was about. While the decor of the restaurant is amazing, the food unfortunately is not. I arrived around 7:50pm and there were no customers there at all. As soon as I stepped in, the lady at the counter began to tell me everything that they don't have left. Tacos weren't on the list, so I began to place my order. There was a language barrier between us and it was difficult to understand the sweet lady and she had difficulty understanding me. Luckily my daughter is fluent in Spanish so she was able to help out. THE FOOD: B O R I N G. What tacos have y'all been eating because the ones I had almost made me cry! I was 100% not impressed by them at all! *see pictures* Folklores only saving grace were the churros and Nutella! Those were darn good and pretty much my dinner for the night. 4 very small tacos and a order of churros cost me $15! I think that is way overpriced but it's West Orange so..... My daughter and I have been here a couple of times recently and the food is EXCELLENT. I would say that each ingredient appears high quality and you taste that on the palate. Each item also appears made with great care. So, we ordered the nachos each time and then got a variety of tacos so have had a good sampling so far. They appear to do a lot of delivery and take-out business but don't let that dissuade you from walking in and sitting down even if you're the only ones there like we were. I also read a healthy # of comments before going anywhere but like to do my own diligence and firm my own opinions. I have no idea how anyone could rate this place negatively. If I could give this place a 3.5 I would. We came here for lunch on cinco de Mayo and they were REALLY understaffed being that it's a day where most people get tacos. Our server was also taking order on the phone, serving tables, and charging pick up orders. We barely saw her because of this and it took pretty long to get a simple order and even our check. Excellent and authentic tacos that come in large portions. We came as a group of 6 and grabbed a seat near the counter. We started with some chips, salsa, guac and street corn. All were excellent and freshly prepared. We then ordered a large amount of tacos for the table and tried to get everything they had on the menu. We really enjoyed the pibil which is difficult to find, it was spicy, smoky and delicious. I also enjoyed the pastor which was prepared traditionally and came with the appropriate garnishes. The only issue was the wait to get food was interminable, it took close to 1 1/2 hours to get our food which was not acceptable. I tried the tacos - a few different types - and was not wowed. I thought the protein fillings were not high quality and over-cooked across the board. We tried the mar y tierra (steak and shrimp), pescado (fish), and short ribs tacos. The steak was a little too dry, shrimp were tiny, and the fish did not taste as fresh as I'd hoped. Ordered takeout, but personally, this was truly the absolute worst tasting mexican food we think we ever had. Bland without seasoning, salt. Ordered something with skirt steak but it clearly was not skirt steak. Unfortunately we didnt take a picture to call and let them know about the error (?). Also kind of annoying every single condiment has a charge. Could have gotten pretty standard and tasty Chipotle with all the works for cheaper than this. Needless to say, can never eat from here again, unless a new recipe or chef arrives. But this is all our own personal opinion so I do encourage others to give it a try and see for themselves. read more
