Lovely, often quiet, dining experience in the front of the house. Often more lively in the bar section. Our food and service has always been very good. After having been in the North East, Down East, whatever we are supposed to call it, for the last several days, I've had my fill of overpriced seafood. Stopped in Belfast to get some laundry done mid-trip, and walked by this incredible smelling place. It wasn't just fried food smell, it was a delicious everything smell. Sometimes when I write these dumb reviews, if I have a place I feel like giving a bit of a knocking to, I'll write a long, and unnecessary bit completed unrelated to the restaurant. I can't do that here. The food is just so good, and well priced, I have nothing to poke fun at. Fortunately there was not much of a line, and we had the choice of outdoor seating because it was a lovely evening. Perfect, epic weather. They had Athletic IPA on the menu so we found a couple of those followed by the chicken wings. They were so good, mildly seasoned with some dipping sauce in the side. Perfectly fried, not over breaded, seasoned or dry. They were great. Next we shared the Pad Se Ew. It was so delicious, the egg has so much flavor and egg doesn't usually have. The noodles were so thicc and flavorful. It was all so good. The only actual downside is that there just wasn't more. That's it! It was so good, we wanted more! (I forgot to take a photo when it came out because I was too excited to devour it). If I ever come back to Belfast, I hope Fon's is still here. This place is for sure on the list again. read more

The food is great, when you finally get it. I waited twenty minutes to get a water and to have someone come to the table. We waited another 10 to have our order taken and 15 minutes for food. There were plenty of open tables, so I fail to see what the hold up was. The spring rolls we got for an appetizer were dynamite--crispy and delicious. My entree was superb. What a thrill to discover such delicious and authentic Thai food in this cute little spot just off Main Street in the heart of Belfast. Our party of four choose to order family style so were fortunate to sample five different items, all of which were fantastic. The chive appetizer was a favorite as was the soup. Even vegetarian style, the soup was rich with flavor and would be top on our recommendation list. Not a single item failed to please so try a little bit of everything. The owner of this restaurant is the most unwell individual I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. He took absolutely no accountability after serving rotted produce and insisted that he checks the quality of everything himself. But then walked it back by saying there has been some staff changes. Long story short he called and accused me of yelling at his staff (I would literally never do that because I'm not an unhinged boomer) yelled over the phone for ten minutes then when I asked why he was being argumentative I think he suffered some kind of psychotic break and hung up. I had been driving past this place for quite some time and finally decided it was time to give it a try. Too bad we waited so long, it is terrific. Clean, decorated with simple but well styled designs, this restaurant is welcoming. We were greeted and seated right away. Menu is varied, lots to choose from. I had a rice noodle dish with pork (I am lousy at remembering the dish names) and my husband had a rice dish with ground chicken. Both dishes were scrumptious. The plates used for serving were modern and appetizing. Wish we had been hungry enough to try appetizers as the money bags looked delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. It's nice enough to be considered as a dinner venue, not just a place for lunch. While Belfast has a number of Thai restaurants, this is surely the most upscale. Amazing. I can't believe it took us this long to try this restaurant. We assumed (incorrectly) that this hole-in-the-wall restaurant would be nothing to write home about but we were wrong! My husband is an islander and an excellent cook in his own right, and he sincerely enjoyed it as well. We've lived on the west coast and had many amazing Thai meals and this one was on par (if not better) than the best of them. We started out with the money bags and curry puff appetizers. The money bags were incredible and the curry puffs were just as good. I had the noodle soup and though it had a lot of heat, it was the right amount. A great find We decided to check this place on our trip home to Orland. Very glad we did. Chicken Satay was amazing with unusual and excellent dipping sauces. Special Fons stir fry was excellent although not spicy. My wife had pad Kra Pow which had more heat and was equally excellent. Service was also top tier. A new Thai restaurant! Yay. I love Thai food but sometimes it seems to get a bit predictable, as in it doesn't blow you away when you take the first bite. This is exactly what the Tom Kha, coconut soup, does at Fon's. It is amazing. I actually said "this is the best soup I've ever had." (I always get Tom Yum because Tom Kha is usually overly sweet but not here.) The dumplings are good and made with care but a bit heavy for me. The fried rice had layers of flavor, we couldn't stop eating it even though we wanted to take some home. I love the mismatched china, the space is roomy and decoration simple and elegant. The hot sauces are delicious. I can't wait to go back to try the papaya salad and curries. It's a bit more expensive than some Thai places but totally worth it. What a wonderful addition to the Belfast restaurant scene. Hope they are around a long time! read more

We were in Belfast for the day, and because of all the great reviews, we decided to try this place. It did NOT disappoint! The food is super fresh and delicious. The vibe of the whole place is so chill and beautiful. The service was incredible. I had one of their specialty cocktails, and it was incredible. My husband ordered a seasonal (fall) beer, and they brought him the bottle plus a glass with an aromatic pumpkin-type spice rim. It really elevated the experience. We've been to Fon's a couple of times on trips into Belfast. It's got a clean and sophisticated feel to the dining space, with a relatively quiet ambiance about its setting. Service and staff have been top-notched both times we've ate here. Food here is always "good" to "very good." (We are plant-based, and options are quite limited in the Belfast area, so two thumbs-up for vegan options!) If I had any quibbles, one would be with their version of chive cakes. I've had it twice -- the first time because I normally love chive cakes; the second (last) time by accident, since I forgot about the first time! -- and both times the consistency was unpleasantly gelatinous -- almost raw-tasting. (I'm gonna have to presume that this IS the consistency they're going for since I've had it this way twice now. For me, I couldn't finish it.) And, too, there's a lack of the normal condiment trays we're used to getting at Thai/Asian restaurants. Fon's spice-level is based on milder palates; thus, condiment spice trays would be a nice perk. Quibbles aside, Fon's is overall a good stop if you're in the Belfast area and are feeling hunger-pangs for Thai/Asian...! read more

One in our group is a picky ester and likes everything predictable, so I left out his comments and ratings I tried the following: summer rolls with dipping sauce +4, chicken skewers with p-nut sauce +3 ( on the boring side) Chicken Pad Thai +4, Pork Fried Rice +2 ( mushy and lacked flavor) Atmosphere was lovely!!!+5. I *tried* to order pad thai with steamed tofu. The waitperson said the cook told her she "couldn't prepare it that way because of the texture" so it had to be fried "a little". This, of course, is simply not true, which I explained to the waitperson, who still would not allow me to order it that way. She said "it's barely fried at all", so I said fine. Well the tofu was obviously pre-prepped, not to mention over-cooked. Just terrible. But that was not even the worst part! The pad thai itself was inedible due to the incredibly SOUR sauce, that tasted nothing like pad thai sauce, which I've had in restaurants all over the US, and have made myself, so I know what I'm talking about. Love this place. The restaurant just opened and they're doing a great job. The pad Thai was traditional and fresh. Kanom jeep, the pork dumplings, five to a serving, were tender, compact and filled with flavors of chive, local pork and garlic. Good dipping sauce. The hot and sour soup is sure to be a favorite: generous quantities of browned crispy tofu ( or chicken), lemongrass, onions, cherry tomatoes, red peppers, scallions, cilantro, mushrooms all in a rich broth layered with flavors. I really wanted to like this place. We had been previously and the food was pretty good. My husband was not as impressed with it, but I thought it would become a regular part of our rotation, as we eat out very often. We tried calling for takeout about a month ago, and my husband was put on hold. When the person never came back, he tried calling back from 6:45 to 8 pm. The phone remained off the hook the entire time. When he called back and spoke with the owner at 9 pm when he finally got through after ending up at Subway, she was apologetic and asked him to please give it another chance. He didn't want to go back, but tonight I convinced him to give it another try. After a couple of minutes, we were seated right after another small group, who was seated at the next table. We ordered appetizers and dinners, then settled in with our drinks. We waited...and waited...and waited as we watched the other party get appetizers, then dinner and then their check, before we got even a morsel of food. Then lo and behold, as we were ready to leave despite being starving, out comes one of our dinners. No appetizers to be found. We told the person who brought the food that we had ordered appetizers and didn't want the dinner, and then our server came with my dinner. I pointed out that the other table had been served from beginning to end and we never got our appetizers. I said, we're leaving, and she asked twice if she should just box it up. No apology or explanation, just trying to have us now take food to go when we didn't receive what we'd ordered and had come to enjoy a meal out. I told her we were the people the owner had asked to please give the place another chance, and this was it. We then asked for a check for my wine and his soda. When we were again left waiting for that, we put cash on the table and left. It's mind-boggling how things could be done so poorly, with no effort to make things right. Of course, mistakes happen and you try to give things another chance but when you sit somewhere for 40 minutes with no food and then a whole part of your order is forgotten, it's unacceptable. We've been here about 10 times now. I think that's good enough to make my recommendations. It's important to note that reviews from those who frequent a particular place are more valuable than those reviews from tourists (or infrequent diners) who are not here to support your business year 'round. Take it as constructive feedback from those who do want you to succeed, assuming you continue to produce a service worth paying for: The menu is not varied, not a lot on it and the specials seem to rotate between 4-5 different entrées, always the same also. Some people appreciate this but as a frequent diner, it gets stale. The Somtum (green papaya salad) dressing is always different tasting. When it's done right, it's amazing. When it's bland, the entire dish is bland. Often a dish we've ordered before will be missing an ingredient. Even something as seemingly simple as cilantro is important to not forget for those of us who love it. It's the layering of flavors that are so important in this kind of cuisine. When something is missing, it's obvious. But, I do understand that ever since Covid, this industry in particular, has been hanging on by a thread. People don't want to work, and for many who do, they lack that true motivation, skill, & attention to detail- so unfortunate for the industry as a whole. It's always been a high turnover industry but now more so. So the fact that this establishment has been able to hold up afterward Covid, when so many others haven't, is commendable. Fon's is also a clean and inviting place, which some of the other popular spots here can't claim. Belfast is lacking in truly remarkable eateries at this date. If you eat out a lot like we do, enjoy from scratch preparations, & have a "foodie" palate, the choices in Belfast are surprisingly, sadly slim. Also, for a healthier choice, Fon's leads the way around here. Still room for competition. read more

I asked before ordering if the dish was spicy and assured it was not. Upon receiving my cashew/pork entree it was indeed too spicy for me. I tried to resolve the problem by asking for a little coconut milk to add. The waiter brought me exactly 1 tablespoon in a small bowl which worked great. When I received my check, the waiter apologetically explained the owner insisted he add $2 for the tablespoon of milk! A little customer service goes a long way. I will never go back. read more

So fresh and clean, deeply flavorful and aromatic. This seems like a place where you can't go wrong with what you order.
