Restaurant itself is very charming and definitely sit outside if the weather's good! We ordered a bunch of stuff to share, including some tacos, sopes, a mole, and a variety of meat dishes. All were very good and definitely interesting as you get a taste of Mexico. There was a meatball dish with chicharrones that really stood out for me! Since we were there for a late brunch, they asked if we wanted to do a mezcal tasting! We were able to do 4 different ones, each from a region with its own unique flavor. Fonda Mayora is situated on a corner, bright and airy surrounded by lush greeery. I sat outside in one of the tables underneath the shade from the trees. It was a perfect afternoon stop for lunch. I like the simple decor of the space with simple wood chairs with a charcoal grey accent. There's a small vase of colourful flowers on each table, and it reminds me of a quaint cafe in Paris. It was a warm afternoon, so I settled for an iced cold Negra Modelo to start. The menu is not vast, but there is something for everyone. I started off with a ceviche. Upon arrival a fresh squeeze of grilled lemon was added to the dish. It had light notes of lemon juice, not overpowering, and the freshness of the fish really shone through. It also had a fragrant oil laced through, which I really enjoyed. There was a small amount of fried garlic bits to the dish. It was quite an exquisite dish, paired with the homemade tostadas. Next, I got an order of the ceviche tostadas. These were like mini tostadas, but was a good bite. Overall, it was a little too oily, and too much liquid to my liking. Service here is friendly, my water was topped up, and so was my beer. Service is a little slower than usual, but the food and atmosphere made up for it. read more

"What kind of place are you trying to go to?!" my friend asked after one week of calling and finding Fonda Mayor packed and not having openings, to calling the following week and finding reservations were only available from 1:00 3:00PM = two hours? Yet - there was a reason this invisible thread kept attracting me, it truly was worth it. The kind of place Fonda Mayor is a corner pocket of deliciousness, convenience, and supreme variety and service. The menu is not extravagant by any means - the lighting inside is unsually bright - even in the evening, but when you first sit down on the corner of Campeche, you wonder, what was here before? This seems so inconspicuous. You notice the layered stone wall inside, the outdoor tables, the activity from the kitchen on the right side of the establishment, but throughout this whole experience, the service, this is what constantly puts you at ease until... ...the selection. Again, not a huge selection it appears to be but, thanks to a younger taster with us this evening, and a great critic aside from myself, we have three differing opportunities to test a variety of what Fonda Mayor had to offer. The Guacamole was chosen by the youngest diner this evening with us, and surprises of surprises. The staff came with a cart, mixed in her choice of onions, tomatoes, pepper, and the avocado and prepared the Guacamole in a rather large volcanic molcajete, and the whole time, your mouth is watering. Needless to say, with tortillas piping hot brought, after this is made, this is fresher tasting than it looks. Check one for amazingness right off the bat. Next, we ordered soup and a salad was ordered for our other member in the party. Flor de calabza in the salad lit up the appearance and overall, fresh fresh fresh. The soup marinated with a chicken wing was spicy, warming, and deliciously made, finding myself scooping every last drop out. Ordering the meal was difficult even with limited choices, but the selection became the mole of the house. When it arrived, it did cover the plate and had medium sized turkey /sausage on the plate, not alot in quantity. Or so it seemed. Upon finishing the rich, filling, and amazingly thick dish, looks were deceiving. STUFFED. I thought for a few minutes I was transported back to Oaxaca, as did our second guest who orderd the same. Finally, (yes there was more) Dessert. Between the pan that imitated the moistness of cake in Mexico, to the fruit / yogurt resembling dessert, to the chocolate torta that was literally like a chocolate cake rated by our younger guest - every single dessert was RIGHT ON and AMAZING. Add to that an ordered Cappuchino that looked like a MILKSHAKE, and we looked at each other following the meal and said, "Who would have known this would have been so great?" Truly it was. Add into all this the service who was great in the form of suggestions, humor, and showing off the best the restaurant had to offer, the wine ordered that was tasetful in delivery and container, and EVERYTHING? This was a homerun and worth waiting for by far. Able to relax, enjoy an amazing meal, and for three people with all the above mentioned for just about 1100.00 pesos (add three beverages that included soda mineral water as well) this was THE best deal for the variety, classiness, and taste, as well as service. read more

For my first meal in DF, I chose this chef-driven fonda backed by chef Gerardo Vázquez Lugo, considered the best place to eat traditional Mexican food in Mexico City. It happens to be a fonda probably not on the tourist path in Mexico. I was drawn to this fonda due to the back from chef Gerardo and photos of the top chefs (chef Enrique of Pujol and chef Jorge of Quintonil) of Mexico dining at Fonda Mayora. Before my meal I chose to sip the Montelobos Espadin Joven mezcal and a Penafiel local sparkling water. I was assigned a server who supposedly was fluent in English. After 1 or so waiting for my meal, I discovered that he did not put my order in. After I thought that I placed my order with him and decided to keep the menu, he thought me keeping the menu meaning I wasn't sure of my order yet. The chip service before your meal was unlike the United States. In DF, you're given maybe 5 pieces of chips with salsa compared to Los Angeles Mexican restaurants, you're given an entire basket of chips. I ordered the mole de la casa described on the menu as "mole artesenal de Naolinco, Veracruz." A rich, sweet dish and deeply satisfying dinner. They were kind enough to offer me a sample of both moles before choosing this dish. I tasted the less sweet "mole verde de Dona Elena" and opted for the more familiar sweet mole. After discovering that my order wasn't placed, a Spanish speaking server came to my rescue when the service attentiveness increased significantly. We were able to communicate with each other fine in my understanding of his Spanish and my less perfect Spanish. I would recommend brushing up on your Spanish before dining at Fonda Mayora for some of the best food in Mexico City. read more

Amazing.... Took my Dad for breakfast while visiting from the states. We got there early on a Saturday morning and we're just one of three tables occupied. Service was incredible, and so was the food. Ordered the fresh bread basket, fruit with local honey/granola, chilaquiles con cecina, and the huevos encamisados. Enjoyed a delicious lunch at Fonda Mayora. The sopes tuétano, guacamole prepared tableside, and the freshly made rolls that arrived spontaneously were the highlights for us. The service was just-right attentive, friendly, and patient, especially considering our Español is severely lacking. We also took full advantage of the 'agave cart' full of many artisanal mezcals to imbibe post-meal instead of the more expected espresso and had zero regrets. Nice ambience and good food. Definitely had better food in Mexico City, but I do not regret eating here because this place was super close to my hotel and service was good. Overall appetizers and drinks were good; but main dishes lacked flavors. Confusing because I generally have issues with entrees being too salty! Both adobo and mole sauces were lacking in my opinion. Ok find in colonia Roma. Not the greatest for picky kids. Come alone or with adventurous mate. Great amalgamation of tradition and new. Not as prohibitive as others. But keep in mind, it's a neighborhood restaurant in a cool neighborhood. Recommend the chile relleno and the meatballs. Fish dishes are a good idea here too. Salsas are of course home made as are desserts, a reckon to be forced...we tried a couple of desserts. Don't bother. Then there's the coffee. It's airline coffee. Chef Gerardo Vázquez Lugo is better known for his other restaurant Nico's, but here you can find everything that made him famous. We really loved this place on our last day in DF. I had a cheesy soup while my husband enjoyed the bone marrow on blue corn sopes. This place is casual, but the food is done so well. Big fan of their vibe. We went for breakfast twice while in town, once just us and the second with friends who live in CDMX. Their outdoor seating is beautiful and I love their pastry cart that comes by as soon as you're seated (excellent if you've been walking to get to the restaurant for a while and need an immediate snack!). We each tried their chocolatin and really loved their take on the pastry. Their fresh juices are great, as is the coffee, and my husband enjoyed their vino rosso cocktail. Great value too! The only reason I don't give it five stars is because the second time we visited, I ordered the same dish my husband got the first time (chilaquiles negros con huevo) and... it wasn't as good. Never fun to be thrilled about a dish the first go round and underwhelmed the second. That said, that dish was awesome the first time, and my friend loved the enchiladas verdes. read more

A perfect Saturday evening experience on our last day in Mexico City. A festive crowd, an attentive staff, and a creative kitchen combined to make it a night to remember. Let's start with the mescal cart, appearing tableside within moments after sitting down. A few waves of various bottles under our noses and we were off to the tasting - let me recommend the brand "Pechuga." Then the guacamole, prepared to your taste, again, at tableside. Fresh and delicious, served with warm corn tortillas fresh from the griddle. The green salad was a delight, replete with fresh flower petals. Chicken mole was wondrous, and the fish of the day grilled with garlic, oil and guajillo chiles was mouth-watering. No room for dessert, but another round of mescal capped a great excursion. After trying Maximo Bistrot, Fonda Fina, and Fonda Mayora, Mexico City dining is truly a moveable feast. read more
