    General Tso's Chicken Pizza

3.6* (out of 5) Food: 4* Atmosphere: 3* Value: 5* Service: 3* Would I go back / Recommend?: 3* (Maybe) Total check/person: $22 05/10/2025 It had been a few years since our last visit to Fong's downtown and we were looking forward to trying out their new location in the old Peace Tree Brewery building in East Village. We had the opportunity to do so with our son, daughter-in-law and grandson and enjoyed the experience. Pizza is generally a good value for a family and on that note, Fong's does well - as we each had a beer and still kept our total bill just under $22/person. Next on the above average list was the food itself, as other than a blackended spot on each pizza (a hot spot in the ovens?), the food was good. Where I found Fong's to be no better than average though is with the atmosphere and service. Starting with crowded and awkward seating spaces inside and then having to wait for water glass refills and other requests. For our meal, we started with an order of Thai Sticks, which other than the one spot that was charred, this was the favorite part of my meal. The peanut sauce, bacon and honey made this sweet, savory and delicious! We then ordered 2 small pizzas to share - a General Tso's Chicken (see picture) and a Loaded Potato with Garlic Butter (see picture). Each was burned black in one spot, but the rest of each pizza tasted good and although there was more bare crust around the circumference than I prefer, the center portion was good enough to make up for that. This was my first time in Fong's new location and it is beautiful and much better suited for their volume. Their food is great as always. We enjoyed some cocktails this time as well as some of their apps, all of which were great. The star of the show was definitely the Thai chicken pizza which had an amazing peanut sauce on it. Love coming to Fong's and enjoying their unique fusion!

I was in town for only 24 hours and someone told me to go to Fong's pizza. I am so glad they did and that they recommended it because this is one of the most different pizza experiences that I have ever had! It's Asian infused pizza, plus their cocktails are Tiki style. So it's like a two in one win! The Decor is really cool as well. It's half Asian and half tiki vibe. I loved it and I have never seen anything like that! Our bartender/waitress was amazing! Not only did she have great customer service, but she was super funny and really entertaining as well! We ordered the crab Rangoon pizza, and some other pizza that I can't remember. Also, the tiki cocktail that comes in the kitty and the one in the peacock and both were super delicious! We also ordered another cocktail that we didn't realize was a shot and when they give it to you they give you a helmet to wear while you do the shot. I thought that was so unique and so funny! I definitely want to come back here! This place is a must if you are ever in Des Moines, Iowa!

Overall the pepperoni pizza was good but I got the November special and it wasn't anything to write home about. If you're interested in it just get the small. Seems like this is a fusion restaurant but mainly does pizza. Had to wait longer than expected. Not busy when I walked in.

A very well laid out dining experience. I love the cultural aspects of this. A wide variety of appetizers and pizzas. Parking is a little tight if it depending on whether it's busy or not but well worth the wait if you need to little bit small but dining area. If you like that Asian cultural look, the ambience is perfect. The smaller pizza might not be enough for one person. I almost decided to order three pizzas one for each of us and one of us to share..

We ate here once years ago and it made such an impression on us that we had to drive a little out of our way to stop for lunch on our way home from Minnesota. I knew before we walked in that I was getting that crab Rangoon pizza! My husband got the meats pizza. Both were just as we remembered. Service was fine, nothing to write home about, but the decor is fun and lively. A lot of Asian flare reflecting their fusion menu. Wish we could franchise this back home in Tulsa!

Decent pizza from a midwestern state being from the tri-state area on the east coast. Walked in and were able to sit right away. Waitress was friendly and answered our questions. The inside had Asian flare and the tiki bar was cool. The crab Rangoon pizza is rated their best pizza but I preferred their honey and garlic pizza. Their cheese sticks were also an interesting take on mozzarella sticks.

There is a reason people flock to Fong's, especially late at night. But, if you are looking to compare Fong's to pizza in NYC, you're totally missing the plot. Sure, I could complain about the slightly uneven distribution of peas on my orange chicken pizza, but I'm the one who sought out Chinese-Italian fusion. The crab Rangoon pizza is notorious and the orange chicken pizza is spicy and delicious. If you're looking for an evening where the long term consequences of your actions are irrelevant, Fong's is the perfect place for a late night dinner.

The pizza tasted like Chuck E. Cheese pizza, this is not a compliment. The cheese sticks were tasty but the service was horrible. Had to get up six times to ask for what we needed. Party of four. While I was still eating she asked if I was ready for check we said no and she can wan crossed it anyway. Waitress was rude and may as well have said to get out. She pushed us to finish and asked several times for us to pay. We were in town for a week and wanted to check it out since it was recommended. This was a straight disappointment and this lady needs some waitress etiquette k and customer service tips. I highly do not recommend.

A colleague and I were recommended this place by some locals and we went for a casual dinner during a recent business trip- what a treat! This place is such a cool mashup between Asian food and flavors and pizza. We loved everything we tried and our server was extremely helpful and attentive.

Fongs has a new location and definitely much bigger and open than the previous. Great to see a local business take over the old building! Service was nice. I definitely think this place is better in the evening for their happy hour and late night snacks!

I had been to the old downtown location and Ankeny location previously, but wanted to check out the new place. Parking was ok to the side gravel lot. The restaurant more spacious and has more natural light coming in. We were quickly seated and got our order in right away. We ordered the crab Rangoon pizza and orange chicken pizza. Both were good, but my favorite was the orange chicken. Our server was very attentive and offered honey and other sauces which I appreciated. Pretty good value for the quality of pizza.

This tiny house is giving Des Monies the vibes it's missing…read more.. On a short layover in Iowa, I was looking for good drinks and food without a lot of waiting or being overcrowded. What I found was a little gem off of one of the main roads in downtown Des Monies. Even before you enter this self described "Tiki Bar" you see all the brick buildings, and then you see an actual grass covered roof...yep that's the place and a really nice touch. The interior is equally cool and spacious, you are greeted by the bar area immediately when you walk in. To your right are comfy couches and instagram friendly neon wall signs, with that signature tiki touch of floral patterns and great lighting. The location is connected to a Asian food restaurant, so they get their food from them as you drink some of the most well crafted adult drinks I've had in a while. I came for happy hour on a Saturday 4:00pm-6:30pm. The drinks were basically 2.00 off with discounted food, the menu is limited to mostly chicken wraps and crab rangoons etc. I will say the portions were filling and very delicious. The star of the show was my El Colmillo, a tequila based drink with lime, orange juice, lime. The bartender did say it's all pre mixed, and that day she subbed the tequila with Casamigos, because the house tequila was out. Customer service was great, until it wasn't. Our server was excellent, until a guy came in off break and they seemed to have some tension. She really didn't have that same positive energy as before, otherwise an overall excellent experience. Pro Tip: Take a walk over to "Hello, Marjorie", it's a completely different vibe but drinks there are just as good...if not better. Go see Travis, he is 10/10 at "Hello, Marjorie".

It does not look or feel like a tiki bar. It has a Miami bar kind of feel to it, with its bright lights. The bar is located in the center of the place and is in the shape of a square with seating on 3 of its 4 sides. They have a television and it was playing my favorite movie, the Last Dragon, while I was there. They have a decent selection of tropical tiki favorites including daiquiris and a full bar too. The bar tender was very nice, but he was kind of slow and not very attentive. After waiting about 10 minutes at a table I found him at the bar, placed my order and went back to my table where he brought me my drink that I ordered. I was chasing him down the entire night to get my drinks ordered. In learned that it was one of his first night alone, so I am sure that he will get better. I ordered a Pain Killer, a Funky Flamingo and a Pillow Talk. All the drinks were very good. They went down so smooth and were delicious. I will admit that the ice is a bit on the heavy side. Anyway, I believe this is the best option in the city for those searching for tiki drinks. I highly recommend checking this place out. Cheers.

We try one new restaurant each month just to keep things fresh, so this time I suggested Fawn's. I'm really glad we did. I had heard so many great things about the food so I was excited to try it. When I saw the menu, though, I was a little nervous because they serve Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian food. In my experience, restaurants that try to serve all kinds of Asian food rarely do one or all of them well. I ordered Pad Thai and my husband got Evil Jungle Prince. I was very pleased. It was the best Pad Thai I've ever eaten. It was SO good! My husband loved his dish, too. It had chicken and vegetables with a spicy sauce made with red curry and coconut milk. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. We each got two meals out of our dinners. I love it when that happens. The place isn't fancy. It's in a small strip mall and doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside it's very clean and well-kept. There's not much for ambience besides two flat screen TVs. It doesn't matter because it's the food that really stands out. The service was excellent, too. My husband had his iced tea refilled twice without even asking. Great affordable food and good service. What more can you ask for? If you love Asian food, give them a try. I can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes.

Hawker Kitchen brings authentic Malaysian street food flavors right into the heart of Des Moines,…read moreand it's a spot that feels both comforting and exciting if you're craving Southeast Asian dishes. Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.

I'd browsed the online menu but still wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I walked in. It's located in a strip so there is plenty of parking. It's order and pay at the front counter. They have a digital menu board and a hard copy menu available if you want to use that. Take a seat and they bring your food to you when it's ready. I ordered the following. I was told my wait would be around 10 min. I think it took a little less than that. One Curry Puff. Described on their menu as: "A crispy pastry filled with curried potatoes, onions, and seasoned meat. A popular snack in Southeast Asia known for its spicy-sweet flavor and golden-brown crust." Sausage with sticky rice. "Asian sausage with sticky rice. Common street food that one can find in Laos and Thailand." Roti John Sandwich. "A popular Malaysian and Singaporean street food sandwich that blends western and asian flavors. Filled with curried beef, eggs, mozzarella cheese, shredded cabbage & carrots with mayo and sweet chili sauce." I didn't need to order that much... Just the sandwich would have been fine for a lunch... But it was something new to try and one item wasn't going to be enough from a curiosity standpoint alone... This would be a great place to take a few friends and do a family style meal! Everything tasted wonderful! I loved the sauce that came with the sticky rice. The curried beef in the sandwich... Wow about says what I want to say about the beef. There is SO much more I want to try! The BBQ puffs, the shrimp pancakes, their beef bulgogi, mee siam, and char kuay teo beef... A nice selection of boba, teas, fizzes, and sweets. Thank God they have a rewards program and a discount when you sign up for it... Cause I'll be back! I'm not sure what is going on, but once again... The staff here was fantastic! Incredible service! I've had a really great run of eating out lately and being treated very well across the board. From everyone working the front to a gentleman who came out from the back, when he saw my Navy cap, to thank me for my service. I was greeted when I walked in. Any questions I had were answered patiently. I stopped by the front to say thank you when I left and everyone was so friendly... Then I headed on my way... At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland.
