Fontana del Babuino In 1571, a new fountain for public use was installed on the street. It was a statue of Silenus, the half man, half goat from Greek mythology. Everyone in the area thought it was really ugly. The statue was compared to a monkey, and was thus nicknamed Babuino (Romanesco for "Baboon"); and, this name became the street name. It joins Rome's other talking statues where people leave pasquinades (nasty notes) directed at public figures. This is a tradition that has continued even to today. read more
