Today was typical -- I went in on a Friday midday with 10 items on my list. Kroger was completely out of two of them going into a weekend. I would usually (and have for years) just shrug. But this is getting to be very very common. I always end up having to go to another store to complete my shopping. This week is was a specific cat food they carry and brown sugar. Twice lately it has been all the milk. MILK. ALL THE MILK. Seems like every time we go to this store we have to make time to go to another store to fill in. Last week all the eggnog in the case was curdled and separated. All of it. Clearly a refrigeration problem. But there it sat, available for sale. So back to the stock-outs. It is always something. It has gotten to the point that, if I have to go somewhere else to buy things that Kroger doesn't have, I might as well start there. So it's not just losing the $2.25 on brown sugar, the tipping point will have us shifting our primary shopping to Food Lion. Or Publix. Or Trader Joe's. Or Walmart. Or Wegman's. Or Lidl. Or Aldi. Or Tom Leonard's. Or Ellwood Thompson's. My point is, Kroger is too comfortable telling the customer to "buy it or leave it." It may be the fault of the buyer in Cincinnati under-purchasing, or the store manager for under-ordering, or the profit plan for not hiring enough staff to get stuff off pallets in the back. Doesn't matter to the customer. You're out of it. We moved all our prescriptions away from Kroger pharmacy years ago due to the long lines and stock outs. It may be time to do so for groceries.

The grocery store was sold years ago, but the prepared foods are still available in various locations around town - including Food Lion! Recently, I visited Richmond to care for a friend while she recovered from surgery. Her comfort food? Ukrops orange salad. She sent me to the local Food Lion to get it. I am not sure why it is called salad, as it is really orange jello with pineapple bits. Yet there it was, nestled amongst the potato salad and egg salad, next to the rotisserie chicken. It was enjoyed that same evening and my patient sank back onto the pillows, the post-surgery pain a little more bearable.

This Food Lion outlet near the intersection of Patterson and Lauderdale in westernmost Henrico Country is immaculately clean and organized. It's staff is attentive and helpful--sure signs of strong customer-driven management and an ethos that works. There are at least a half dozen supermarkets nearer to my home. It's because of my experience every time that I drive right past them to buy my groceries here. My highest endorsement.

As I said, they have sun sheltered parking off to the left of the main parking, a great option when it's 99 degrees outside, and a decent rain shelter too, though it would be a bit imperfect. The store is typical Whole Foods though a tad smaller than the location I'm used to, it still has great options for vegetables especially organic, and other healthy items like kombuchas and limited ingredient prepared foods and some great meat and cheese options. I asked for directions to find an item on the shopping list and had a friendly response, and our checkout person was friendly and helpful too. The market was busy and but not overcrowded and there is a lot of space around the perimeter (they say shop the perimeter for the best foods and WF seems to have given thought to giving you more room for that and a tad less for the aisles, a decent approach for my tastes. They were having an issue with their freezers on this day but had the wherewithal to direct customers to the location the frozen items had been moved to, a very customer-friendly move. The AC kept things nice and cool inside on a very hot day. And the meat department was even more chilled. From my Mother, While WF can be a bit more expensive, they offer Prime Deals often and carry a 365 prime brand that is dependably low priced and high quality. Watch for a once a year ice cream discount too!
