Honestly, I will stick to Winco in Fresno/Modesto. They are worth my commute. I just moved to Merced so I have yet to find a decent grocery store here. Giving FoodMaxx the benefit of the doubt, I was let down a few days ago. I purchased a pack of meat that was re-labeled (which I didn't realize until I got home). My plan was to cook it immediately for dinner when I got home but when I opened up the package... there was a horrible stench. If you look closely at the photo, you will see that the original sell by date was 02.21.23 & the new one on top was 03.08.23. Mind you, this purchase was made on 03/05/23. I won't return to the grocery stores here in town again. read more

Avoid this store at all costs... ESPECIALLY the cashier named "Brooklyn"... if you see this name tag, switch lines. Where do I start... I chose Brooklyn's line because there was NOBODY in it. I literally had two extremely dry oranges and a half gallon of milk... easy enough one would assume. Boy was I wrong! First Brooklyn said to me "It's going to be a few minutes, I'm waiting on something" I looked at the line next to me and someone had a huge amount of groceries so I didn't want to move, I simply said "ok". I set MY basket, yes MY personal basket on the belt. This basket is from my work, I won't mention the name of the grocery store but it's about 30 miles away, hence the reason I had to go to FoodMaxx... After Brooklyn decided she wanted to start working (whatever she was making me wait for, we may never know... she must be still waiting as I'm writing this...) she grabbed my basket and scanned my items. She looked and noticed the basket was from my place of work and started asking me "Why do you have a basket from...??" I told her that was my place of employment and what concern of it was hers anyway. Since when did a cashier at FoodMaxx become the equivalent of an CIA agent? Not sure if she was appointed as the local "Chief Basket Police" of Merced or what... It's not a FoodMaxx basket, so why attempt to interrogate a customer over a basket that's obviously not from her establishment? Not that I needed to, but I informed her that I worked there and we are free to take them home as needed, she thought it was funny and gave this condescending smirky laugh and literally threw my things on the belt. Not back in the basket which was the subject of such interrogation but on the dirty, grimy belt, which I'm pretty sure is her responsibility to keep clean. I've worked in grocery for over 20 years and let me tell you, Brooklyn would have been fired on the first day at my place of employment. This is how a business loses customers, and earns a bad reputation. You can thank Brooklyn for causing another customer to forever walk away from FoodMaxx. A little bit of training in customer service can go a long way... apparently Brooklyn never received such training. I won't be back, Brooklyn should follow suit. read more

Store is cheaper than other store but the store is not clean. Starts off with the baskets. Scared to put anything in them they are so dirty!!! Than as u walk around the store u see stuff on the floors like it's not being swept and than when u go to the self checkout cause they only have one checker open forcing all the customers that are pissed and don't want to wait in that one line. The self checkouts are worse than the baskets!! I had to ask to have the guy put a bag down before I started because they were filthy. Disgusting read more

I just wanted to write a shout out to Bella from Merced Foodmax for giving great customer service! She was so nice to rearrange my separate items in bundles that they had for a lower price at the stores. She didn't rush it she took her time to go grab all the items needed and still met the quality that I was looking for. I had grabbed smores in all separate items but they already have a smores bundle which was cheaper and she went out of her way to help me out by saving! She also swapped out my box of Oreos telling me there was a better price for more! She was truly amazing and that truly made me feel great that she didn't mind doing all that for us! read more

Please take your cashier Angelina off the register and put her in the back if she is not going to have a good attitude. She must be new because I have seen her only maybe twice. She is rude, throwing groceries around, does not wait for anybody to finish grabbing their stuff so there are two people at once on the belt trying to grab their items and she won't acknowledge when spoken to. Get people with better attitudes up front to I get act with your customers not children like her. The customer behind me and in front of me made comments about her being mad at the world. read more

Honestly the workers here are so rude, apart from that when we were checking out the cashier Dwane was so rude out of know here on mimicking us because we were talking Spanish to each other. There really was no need to do that when we speak English as well and are born here, the fact that it's not the first time he does something like this to customers being racist is crazy. read more

This place has the worst service ever possible. The cashier was rude. He ignored me and kept talking to the person in front of me then after ringing up my items he walked away. I asked him for a bag which he threw to me. Then I had to tell him I wanted plastic bag instead of paper and he gave me a dirty look and threw the bag at me. I came in to buy a few things I needed early Monday morning . The night crew busy stocking though the male checker isn't friendly at all ! He totally was bothered at the fact that he had to scan all the cans of catfood I bought and furthermore he dropped the 4-pack of fruit cups and by the time I arrived at home they leaked sticky juice all over the place. This guy has become a real ass. Other checkers don't make you feel like crap after leaving food max but this guy needs a slap in the face!!!!! And I know Ivan usually is there on grave-yard shift but he sure wasn't there tonight it sure makes all the difference in the day and night when you have rude stupid punk ass men who hate customers that shop at the store where they work! Ivan on the other hand is sweet genuine and helpful and so pleasant to all people and he has a wonderful personality . read more

I love this food maxx. I live close to Raleys and I go there for short trips but for major shopping I go here. You can't beat the prices for produce or meat and they are very fresh. You can tell it's well managed because the employees are fast, friendly and smart. I'm not giving it five stars because the parking lot at night is not well lit and they're always scary looking people hanging around. I don't go at night. read more

Ordered a cake for a special event with specific color/writing choices. When we came to pick up that cake the colors were completely wrong and when we asked if they could fix it they said "There's nothing we can do" and one girl even said "oh well." We were told that the color frosting that we asked for "didn't exist" even though when we ordered it we were told that they could do it. The overall quality of the frosting on the cake was messy/sloppy and the writing was even worse. It looked like we were having a baby shower (w/ soft blue & yellow frosting when we asked for royal blue) when we really needed it for a professional event. What I don't understand is why when the form said blue writing they would substitute it for yellow without asking and expect it to be okay, even though there was a phone number for contact for them to call if they were confused. With no time to order another cake somewhere else, my friends and I were completely embarrassed to bring a cake that was completely wrong to our event. I will never buy cake here again! read more

After my first trip here, I would say that I am a huge fan. I am kind of a bargain hunter, and found that I saved a TON of money coming here compared to Raley's. I'll use this place for the bulk of my shopping, but still go to Raley's for specialty items (they have a few more options there, especially in the deli). read more

Went in for a few groceries and went through self checkout after getting all kinds of "store login required" things the lady manning the post who turned out to be the manager told me "you have to keep things on this spot" meaning some sort of scale... well I have back problems and I can't bend a lot ... anyway first time she told I was like okay I understand, second time she told me it was like I was 5 years old and didn't know what I was doing and I said to her that "I know you already told me this I understand." Her response was "don't yell at me I don't get paid enough to get yelled at." My response back was, "neither do I." read more

This review is specifically for the Pharmacy.I had went there previously a few months ago,and was impressed with the small wait time to fill my prescription compared to other pharmacies in the area.But yesterday really settled it for me.I went in to fill a prescription for eye drops,and they didn't have them,were very apologetic,and said I could return tomorrow so I said I would and left,but minutes later I received a call saying that I could come pick up a substitute,so I returned and picked it up with no issues.Kim and Lorena really care about the people who fill their prescriptions there,and I would never recommend another pharmacy anywhere else in town. read more

Food Maxx just opened and it is amazing. I used to shop at Cost less in Turlock because of their lower prices. Now I can find those low prices in Merced. It completely saves me the agony of grocery shopping elsewhere. Right now they have many staff members happy to help the large amount of customers making their first shopping runs here. So far, so good. I will definitely be shopping here again very soon and will take note of any changes that happen. read more

My family and I just moved to merced and are not really familiar with grocery stores here so we tried food maxx, the workers were very rude, I asked about where certain things are and got ignored twice, employees don't even greet you at checkstand or say thank you or even you're welcome when I said thank you for giving me my change, then I asked for bags and got told "their right there" and again I say thank you and get nothing in return.. the same thing happend the second time I came to this store, I think I will just stick to food for less or cardenas. Respect and manners are really high on my rating list. It's the little things. read more

Disquieting experience with FoodMaxx today. I bought an item on their shelf that stated it was a "red hot deal" requiring a coupon. The checkout clerk confirmed the coupon had been applied. When I got home, that was not the case. I called the store and the service person said I had bought the wrong size, but would check the display. At the display, she claimed that it had been taken down, so there was no way to confirm who was at fault. This was just 1 hour after I had bought the item and in the morning. This seems suspiciously like the store made a mistake, but wouldn't admit to it. As I am disabled, I cannot return to the store to verify this for myself. FoodMaxx is usually OK for a store, although in my experience it does seem to be a bit cavalier with items that should be regularly stocked on the shelves but go missing. In this particular case, I seem to have been misled on a sale item, and a clerk who could have confirmed the mistake at the checkout did nothing but lead me to believe I had not made any mistake. read more

Went there about 1 hour ago. About 20-25 people in line. Only 2 Checkers. My ice cream was melting standing there. Myself and several other customer were cussing the situation. It has gotten progressively worse the last year. Never a cashier in sight. I ran out the door and headed to Save Mart on G and Olive. Night crew are not always the friendliest. Always deep in their conversations about bfs/gfs or other irrelevant drama. But when it comes to connecting with customers they are rude, and uptight. However they did replace a bottle of Hypnotic after the cashier bagged a two, 2-litter sodas with it and the bag ripped as soon as I got home. read more

This is my go to supermarket. They have a great selection of items and very low prices. They're not usually too busy but at times it can be out of hand. The staff is friendly and attentive to the needs of customers. They also have self checkout stands for those who don't have a bunch of items. There's plenty of parking and it's never too crowded. read more

I like this store a lot. I shop here each week. The prices is competitive with Raley's, Save Mart, Food 4 Less, and other stores. In some cases they will jack up the prices for obvious reasons; however, when they do that, I will shop elsewhere if the prices are too high. I am on a shoestring budget and at times you can find great bargains. Checking out is usually fine unless they are busy. If they are busy, the employees gets a bit stressed out over it but still a good store to shop. read more

Negative 3 stars for the inability to reach items I'm needing/ or having to squeeze in between a pallet to try to reach item I'm after, and their lousy selection and near/already passed expiration food still being sold. The food in the bakery seems to be the only food fresh there, there's been many times I've had to pass on getting something because the item was already looking nasty, and there's been times I've gotten something that already had the seal opened, therefore being unable to eat/use. Going to have to do my main grocery shopping somewhere else and use this store in times of desperation, if at all. At least the staff has always been nice. read more

The five stars are specifically for Chad in the meat department. I've been having real trouble finding fresh pork bellies to make bacon and I called the Merced FoodMaxx, not really expecting to find them there. Chad had never seen them, asked his co-workers, then found it in his catalog. He told me he'd call somebody and call me back - and he did, twice! Today he called me again - he'd ordered a case and wanted to let me know they were in and told me he could now order them anytime. Absolutely great customer service. Thanks again Chad! read more

Once in a while you'll find annoying customers. And the produce is O.K. Checking out is usually pretty quick, but when it's busy, employees can't seem to figure out how to handle the surge of customers. I'm sure the store could use improvement. read more

I don't go anywhere else for my groceries. This place has it all, plus the cashier I typically go to is friendly for the 45 seconds of scanning my food. I do hate having to bag my own food. Ive never been to place like that unless its a ikea. read more
