This is my friend's favorite bakery and a must-stop any time she's in Merced. I was with her and so I had the pleasure of visiting for a late lunch. I wasn't very hungry, so I opted for a bowl of soup with a side of cornbread and a slice of pie to go. The soup was hearty and plentiful. I could have gone for a cup instead, but instead took what I couldn't eat to-go and enjoyed it later. The corn bread was delicious--slightly sweet, and moist enough to not fall apart when I cut into it with my fork. I usually love butter with corn bread, which they offered me, but it didn't need it. I wasn't sure which pie to get-they have so many to pick from. Checking out the options in the bakery case didn't help because they all looked so beautiful. I ended up selecting peach, and it was amazing. The peaches were perfectly caramelized but still maintained their texture. The bake of the pie brought out their ultimate peachiness. The crust was just the right thickness. Even though it was a cold slice, the crust remained flakey. The cafe had ample seating. Service was attentive, but not overbearing. Pricing is on the high end, but I'm not sure how much that is because food is so expensive now-a-days. I was a bit surprised to see sandwich combos (with a side) all starting at around $20, and going up from there. It was after 2 in the afternoon, so the bakery had several 50% off boxes of baked goods to select. Four large cookies for I believe $12 or so (I could be wrong). There weren't too many options left in the bakery cases. I would love to see what this place offers when it first opens. Stay tuned for an update once I get that chance. read more

Food is alright, sandwich, salad, soup, etc. I like that they offer seasonal menu, but I wish they can offer french fries for the side options. In my opinion, this place is overpriced for a cafe in Merced. Salad/Sandwich is average around $21 - $25. With tax and tips, you will probably spend about $30+ for lunch here. read more

There are two highlights. The staff and the pie. Everybody working there seemed happy and incredibly kind. The type of kindness that makes your day better. And of course, I had to get a pie. Absolutely delicious. I would go back just for the kind service and pie. I also ordered the country breakfast, which was a house special. It was just ok, which is surprising for a house special. It tasted (maybe) as good as something I'd make at home. The biscuit however was disappointing. It didn't taste freshly made. I suspect it was premade or bought in bulk and just warmed up. I will certainly be going back but more so for the pie and the service. Maybe I'll give another dish to try, but it does seem to be first and foremost focussed on the bakery. read more

I was so in the mood for a really good local burger. But I wanted a burger from a place I hadn't tried before. As I happened to be in the area of Jantz Cafe, I did a quick search to ensure they indeed had burgers on their menu. After reading the details of the Sky burger that were online- housemade sweet potato buns, 2x Mariposa Ranch grass fed beef, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, grilled peppers and onions- I was like oh yeah! I called in to place my order and then I found out the price- $24.99! No sides, no drink. Just the burger. The associate asked if I wanted to add a side it would be an additional $2 charge. Well, even though I was shocked by the price of the burger, I didn't want to cancel it. I get to Jantz to pick up my order and of course the place is nice and clean with a comfortable ambiance. I get home and I'm beyond ready to enjoy my double cheeseburger since this is my first and only meal of the day. I open up the box and I have to admit, it is a very nice looking burger. However, looks can be deceiving. I had it cooked to a medium doneness, so there was some juice but not a lot. The patties lacked so much flavor and the bun was extremely dry and crumbly. There was some nice freshness coming from the lettuce and tomatoes, but overall this was the worst burger I've e ever had and it definitely did not justify the $25 price tag. To be clear, I have no issue paying up for a quality menu item, but this was definitely not it. I also stopped by H&W to pick up a side fries because why not. And yes, I ate the whole burger after adding some salt to the patties and extra mayo to help with overall dryness of the burger. read more

Hey Jantz, You are quite the quaint little restaurant and bakery. Simple decor, delicious baked goods, kind people. Your food is simple but good, though really what makes Jantz, Jantz, is the baked pies and pumpkin breads. I've only ate at your place once but I as well as many others have come by to get some breads either to give as gifts or to share with those who visit Merced. And yes, I've noticed that everyone is dressed conservatively due to your religious affiliations. I actually appreciate that as it makes it all the more family-friendly. Love me some Jants! The pulled pork jalapeño poppers are out of this world and the burgers are Devine. Cute little hole in the wall spot with a slight 80s diner kind of feel. This little breakfast/lunch Cafe was conveniently located near the Merced Amtrak station. Its open until 3 pm and all the bread is baked fresh in house. All of our food was delicious, wasn't a huge fan of the strawberry pie as it was more of a gelatin than other fresh strawberry pies. We got a coffee cake, cookies, and declare and some pie crisps to go. Our waitress was super sweet and bubbly. Gave us great reccomendations. They have an express section attached in the next store front to purchase baked goods, local honey, seasoning and logo items. The restaurant is cute and open, with quite a bit of seating space. seems like they would be busy earlier in the day as most of their pastry counters have been cleared out. They have 2-3 pastry counters one for pie. One for cupcakes/brownies/lemon bars and another for more Danish type pastries. We plan on coming back in the future. read more

Went to Jantz for the first time today for dinner (their lunch) [they don't have a dinner menu]. The staff was really friendly and attentive, checked on us multiple times while eating to make sure we enjoyed our food and didn't need anything else. I had what I've heard is their best dish, the chicken salad sandwich. It lived up to the hype! The unsweetened raspberry tea was really good too. I was too full to eat a dessert, so I'm excited to return to try a sliver. And I only ate half of the sandwich. So I'm also excited for leftovers. I bought a funny t-shirt. They have a little gift shop off to the side of the cafe area. I just wouldn't recommend the baked beans. They're smothered in a sweet barbecue sauce. read more

I ordered the California egg white omelette to go, which is described as being filled with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, topped with cheese and fresh avocado. Unfortunately, the omelette was burnt and the eggs were flat. There was barely any spinach or mushrooms, and it was overloaded with overcooked tomatoes. The cheese was minimal, and the avocado on top didn't look fresh. To make things worse, when I got home, the side of fruit was missing from my order. I called the restaurant and was told I'd receive a $2 credit, which felt like a minimal gesture given the poor quality and incomplete order. This was actually my second time ordering this same dish at the Merced location and sadly, both times were disappointing. I had hoped the first time was a fluke, but it seems like this may just be how the dish is prepared. Definitely not worth the price ($24.89). Visited this place for breakfast. We waited 20 minutes, then I decided to walk around the cafe and found that they had free tables and not one. The table at which we were seated later was exactly the free one that I had seen before. They do not have enough staff, the waiters are busy, and you have to wait a long time. The interior is beautiful, lots of light in the room. Owners should consider hiring more staff because the place is quite popular even on weekdays. The table we sat at was dirty. The coffee latte had a strong burnt taste. The food is not very tasty. The pie was delicious. I was surprised that you have to pay for the sauce for a burrito, how can you eat a burrito without sauce at all? Breakfast tacos looked like a mess. Prices are above average and not justified for me. Don't recommend Sam who replied to my review. We did not change seats on our own, but asked your staff to help us with the table! And it was your staff that gave us that seat. And if they gave us a different table, they should have wiped down the table and made sure it was clean. This place isn't located in a location you'd think of when seeing what their whole vibe is all about. For as comfy & homelike the feeling is inside it's located in a very commercial boxy building and we almost didn't find it because our maps took us to the backside where you can't see the place at all. The ambiance is welcoming right when you walk through the doors. Clean, warm colors , the aroma of fresh baked goods and friendly service. The French toast is just like grandma would make with fresh bread too. The sausage links were so flavorful and tender with a nice snap of the skin , I could of eaten a whole plate of them. All meat omelet was generous in its portion and tasty. Restrooms were super clean along with the entire establishment. They do a great job of keeping the place tidy. We grabbed a box of sugar cookies to bring to family and they were soft and buttery good. We most certainly will come back when we are in the area next. Highly recommend. read more

I have loved Jantz for years and I was so disappointed. Sticker shock for a breakfast that was so mediocre. I had the California omelet Which had hardly any Spanish or mushrooms, the potatoes were cold. I'm also added a cinnamon roll and it wasn't as delicious as I remembered. My husband orders a slice of Dutch apple pie And I think they over heated it. It was melted flat and the crisp top was just mush. My daughter had a small breakfast and it was also mediocre. The two breakfast and a piece of pie was almost 80.00 dollars with tip. So disappointed I did like the Rye bread was the only item I loved. read more

I've tried to give this restaurant some grace but they just stand around and DO NOT SERVE YOU. I just was seated once again and sat for 10 minutes while 5-6 women chatted behind the counter and several of them passed my table and no one took my order. This is a chronic issue at the Merced store. Someone needs to Supervise and observe what's going on. My impression is that you just don't care about my business. I don't have all day to wait on your staff to get in the mood to do their jobs. I need to get in there, eat and get back to my business. THIS IS NO WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS, FOLKS! The food tasted like it was a white person in the back with no seasoning being used. I've been to both Jantz locations, the one in Merced and the one in Atwater. I was less than satisfied during both separate occasions. Starting with the Merced location. I went with 2 of my good friends right before I was going to move away. It was supposed to be a nice breakfast with good memories. We didn't even stay. To start, it took forever to be seated, but we were in no rush. I originally wanted the hot toasted turkey sandwich, but when I ordered it, they informed me that they were out of the turkey. So, I decided I wanted a scone, but when I went to order one, they also didn't have any. They informed me that they had muffins, so I ordered the blueberry muffin. Our waitress said she had to go check once again if they had that. They didn't. Their menu is already small. You can't customize anything (which was the issue I experienced at the Atwater location) and even after picking multiple items off the menu, they still didn't even have any of it. So, I decided it wasn't worth staying since they didn't have anything and had horrible service. And when I informed them that we decided not to stay, they all stood around acting confused.
