This place is a miraculous gem of awesome fresh and organic food in the middle of a practical food desert. The closest grocery stores are Cermak Produce, some corner stores, and a Family Dollar. FoodSmart is clearly catering to the hipsters slowly moving west and south from Wicker Park and Logan Square, respectively. There's definitely a huge selection of food and liquor here for everyone, but they specialize in fresh organic food with a lot of vegetarian and vegan selections. Yay! There's a lot crammed in here, so take your time looking around. My favorite part of the store is their fresh food since they have veggies, fruits, and pre-prepared meals that have very few preservatives. Yasss! Prices are typical for the brands and quality of foods that they carry, which is great on this lonely stretch of Armitage. Liquor section is huge and there's tastings available if you want to try something. They also have a new-ish food counter where you can buy hot food and drinks while you relax in the store. Freezer has freezer burn all over food. Messy . Unorganized. Very expensive. They charge you 4% for using a debit card. Charging to use a credit card is against their agreement with credit card companies. I saw a guy who works for the city in there telling the guy they were over charging and explaining to them what they were doing was illegal. read more

Basically this is an okay grocery store with a few cool items. It's not big like a chain store, but has a pretty good selection. FoodSmart is located on Diversey. Has an okay location close to a few bars and restaurants that are good. The prices aren't the cheaper but mostly are okay. A pretty much unassuming looking store except they advertise vegan food and items. It has quite a few for a small store. There's pour yourself kombucha, which is a nice touch. Has a good amount of vegan friendly meat substitutes. The prices are okay too. Otherwise it's a pretty typical convenience store with the basics. This even has a post office, so send your mail from here. Every now and then I get a few things from here if around. It's pretty good for a small grocery store to be honest. There's a few things that are okay prices and you can find a surprisingly large amount of items for vegans and vegetarians. read more

On top of receiving a 7% Upside cash back offer on grocery purchases, I visited Foodsmart Urban Market as part of Upside 'Make March a win' which required 3 grocery transactions to get a $15 bonus added to my account balance. Foodsmart Urban Market was one of the grocery stores part of the process and nearest to my neighborhood. In spite of the parking being shared at Foodsmart Urban Market, I had no issues whatsoever finding a spot to park my vehicle. I have to admit, I was not expecting to encounter such a lit-up exterior nor one with parking space. The atmosphere was very relaxed at this market which gives off a neighborhood corner store vibe. Other than the prices being priced higher, it was a huge break shopping here versus somewhere like a Jewel-Osco, Pete's Fresh Market or a Mariano's. I must share that along with the items shelved being organized, the market was very clean, yet the aisles had tight maneuvering space in-between. While shopping, I took a liking to the variety of the vegan-friendly plant-based items like Beyond Sausage, Upton's Naturals, and even Amy's! And oh my God, it was over once I encountered pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors (cannoli, and oatmeal dream pie) which I had never encountered before. My interaction with the clerk behind the register was nothing short of professional. As my items were being scanned, I enjoyed the friendly interaction with one of the other clerks about cannoli, and the Ben & Jerry's - cannoli flavor which stemmed from my questioning about the Ben & Jerry's - oatmeal dream pie flavor purchased. I enjoyed shopping at Foodsmart Urban Market, but I just cannot see myself shopping here regularly due to it being out of my way. After a dental surgery on a day before Christmas Eve, I was looking around for a store to get some after-surgery food and figured the stores I'm used to would open only on the day after tomorrow. This medium-small size store offered me everything I needed. The variety of food is good enough so you don't have to be hungry. The store is open 24 hours even on holidays and this is just awesome. Food Smart is a bright light amidst a sea of terrible corner stores and Family Dollars. I'll admit I'm vegetarian, like craft beer and fresh produce. Food Smart fulfills all of those needs and is within walking distance of my home. It's certainly more expensive than a corner store, but they have lots of fresh fruits and veggies, healthy pre-made meals, smoked salmon and other items you'd only expect from Whole Foods. Adding to its character is the attached laundromat and that they sell porno mags; don't worry, they put them on the top racks with black covers. This is easily my quick go-to store. read more

Hey there, Food Smart, I the cut of your jib. You have a nice variety of produce for such a small store, as well as a great selection of pre-made items. I especially appreciate the wide variety of vegan wraps, sandwiches, and salads. There's also have a really nice beverage selection. It's a little pricey, but I appreciate the nice people who work there. Hard to make a living in this town when you have to compete with corporate giants and pay the highest taxes in the country. Is it a bodega? Is it a laundrymat? It's both. And it never closes. This is the cleanest liquor store in Logan Square proper, and they have a shit-ton of other grocery products. More than you'd expect. More than Tianguis, sometimes. Their beer and wine selection is mostly the boring stuff and the hispanic-centered stuff, but once in a while you'll find a somewhat interesting interesting 6-pack. The whole neighborhood comes here at some point, from the scuzzbags to the fat kids to the wide-eyed yuppies. I like the 25 cent tortillas, the pre-packaged flan, the occasionally mispriced wine, the brown bag tortilla chips, and the little revolving entrance gate that makes you feel like you're entering Wrigley Field. read more

It's a convenience store, so the fact that it's convenient is a wonderful thing. It's clean, there's an attached laundromat with free wi-fi, the service is decent - and it's 24 hours, which means if you decide at 4am that you want a microwave pizza or some beer, this place'll do right by you. Prices are decent - watch out for groceries, I guess, but ... well, it's a convenience store, you have to expect some things'll be more expensive than they should be. There's really not a lot to say. It's 4am, you're hungry, and you have nothing to eat. As a vegan you can either go to 7-11 and get bags of plain and BBQ flavored Lay's or you can go to FoodSmart. They have a pretty decent selection of food here and they're one of the most well-stocked stores in general for vegan specialty food like pre-packaged meals. Recently because this place looks better than ever with even more options like fresh herbs and a gigantic soda fountain and the staff seemed friendlier too. The prices are pretty decent as well. Are they going to be supermarket prices? No. But they are pretty competitive with Walgreens and often cheaper (and the Walgreens near me closes at 10pm, boo!) They only gripe is the staff, while improved, still aren't the friendliest people on the planet. Guess that's just part of the graveyard shift though. read more

I got moldy cheese here. I just spent the last 5 hours making lasagna. I even made the pasta from scratch, and bought grass fed beef. I picked up ricotta at food smart because the local place didn't have it. It wasn't until I had spread the last layer of ricotta that I saw the green mold. Thanks for ruining my night! Now I'm starving and I have to throw out a huge dish of lasagna. This was supposed to be Saturday night dinner and leftovers for the week. I looked at the label and it was still within the expiration. My best guess is the refrigerators are not cold enough or it was improperly stored. Usually when I come here I get almond or coconut milk, veg items from the refrigerated section, beverages and veg items from the frozen section. Always good. I LOVE that they carry the Tofutti frozen pizzas and hope they never stop carrying them! Their selection of vegan items is a godsend, too. The prices aren't outrageous for a convenience store, either, which is nice. They carry one of my favorite flavors of vegan ice cream - Butter Pecan! I make root beer floats with that, its insane. The only thing I would like to see are more flavors of vegan ice cream and for them to start carrying the Creamy Teese again, and Nacho Teese instead of the Cheddar. This is totally for selfish reasons, like when I am in the mood for mac and cheese or nachos, but the Creamy and Nacho are bestsellers, so that would be good for business anyway. I have NEVER felt unsafe here, and I always come in at night by myself. They do not let gang members hang out as some other reviewer stated. Food Smart is a really great part of the neighborhood, especially since the only other place that carries natural foods nearby is a co-op that is way too expensive for me and most Logan Square residents to shop at. This is a great place to shop especially because I live right around the corner. My only gripe would be that they need to get a better coffee selection, because I am only left with DD as an option. No little grocery store in Logan Square sells anything decent. This store carries a great variety of items, great specialty items like seitan too and goat cheese. I just bought a Vito and Nick's frozen pizza last night for dinner and it was probably the best frozen pizza I've ever had. I may not figure this place out if I live to be a hundred. It may be the only place I've ever been to in my life that sells both vegan jerky and low-rent porno mags. There's also a laundromat, a lobby filled with drunks and headcases, an amazing selection of beverages and snacks, a surprisingly decent section of produce and health food, mousetraps, motor oil, a Belly register, an Icee machine that doesn't work and a nacho machine that does, and who knows what else. It's better than any other bodega or convenience store, but also pricier, and it's open 24 hours, but also full of the kind of crazies that would be in a place like this at 3AM. I can't believe I have yet to write a review for this place. This is the kind of business Logan Square needs. Clean, a selection you can't get anywhere else, and open nearly 24/7. Ben & Jerry's, all sorts of veg stuffs, fancy cheeses, Chobani out the yang, huge hard and soft drink selection. Not sure what other reviewers are talking about with "gang thugs," but what do you really expect from a place open ALL THE TIME that sells booze? Extra points for having a post office inside. If i could give this place no stars I would, first of all it's a small crowded check out line where it's half UPS half market. I went in to simply drop off my box and get a ¢69 water bottle because it was hot out. I first checked the signs if there was no dogs allowed which in my defense there is not. I was in check out line waiting for the distracted lady to stop talking to someone who didn't have any groceries so I can get a water for me and my dog. A man approaches me with his stinky cigarette breath and says "you need to leave or tie up your dog outside because you can't be here" I responded nicely saying I just need to pay this and ill leave. He then goes over the counter takes the water away from my hands and goes "I don't think you heard me you need to leave now". First of all, I was just waiting to get checked out for a simple water I wasn't walking around the whole place, I was patiently waiting for the clerk to notice I'm waiting. this place is great! it is a liquor store and mini grocery store. they have food for yuppies like me such as tofu, Kombucha drinks (my favorit thing in the world) and anything for a snack or quick meal. they are right down the street, anytime I want i snack or chicken pot pie or pizza or health drink; i just walk down there and im back in 10 minutes. the staff treats you with the respect you treat them (they are nice to me but I've seen them get into fights with the crazies and drunk people!). over all, good store, very useful to the surrounding neighborhood. read more
