From the outside, it looks like an old liquor store, but once you step inside, it's a craft beer nerd's heaven. Their beer selection is massive with a big emphasis on the local Chicago and Midwest beers. I can always count on them to have the latest releases from great breweries like Hop Butcher, Saint Errant, Transient, etc. Plus, they've got a huge selection of beers from Maine Brewing! Wowza, what a beer selection they have! They have stellar bomber choices better than a lot of bigger liquor stores I've come across. They had one of the biggest Pipeworks collections I've seen around which surprised me for such a small liquor store. They also had a huge array of bombers, nice & chilled! Again, a more hearty cold compilation of good craft beer big bottles than I've seen at shops twice their size. I don't know if this is their regular deal but I went to a tasting at Capone's this past weekend. It was a great turnout and they did the tasting outside. The staff & reps for the beers were all so friendly, easy to talk to and the event went smoothly. My friend and I were so happy with the tasting, we promptly went inside to buy ourselves some brews. I have to agree with others that some of their prices are a buck or two more than at other shops but I saw some items priced the same or even a buck cheaper than at my go to liquor spot. I was looking for a special bottle of beer from Pipework's Brewing today and a friend told me about Capone's, saying it was a kicked back spot with a great selection of beer. Holy Super Beer Hero Batman! She was spot on! Not only was I able to get the bottle of Barrel-Aged Brown & Stirred, I also picked up a few bottles of Southern Tier Creme Brûlée, a long time fav. The shop has heaps of choices including some of my favorite Stone Brewing selections. I now know where I will be able to go to pick up Stone special releases. Chicago is not so great at showing the love for The brewery that will always have a piece of my heart so it made me feel good. I can tell Capone's is a good fit for me. It's not pretentious and I'm guessing they have a little respect for the old beer folks like me that have jobs and that don't have the luxury of camping out for two days to get a bottle of special release beer :) This place is a keeper and I drove there without getting lost or honked at. I came here because a friend of mine highly recommends it and has his beer stocked here. I came here to buy some of my friend's stock and was pleased to find that Capone's isn't just some neighborhood liquor store that carred lots of A/B and MillerCoors products with a couple of chips thrown in. The place is stocked bottom to top with craft beers and the beer I was looking for was right there at the end of the counter. I came by again to restock and on a whim, asked if they had any of Pipeworks' Raspberry Truffle Abduction. The owner smiled, and pulled out a bottle from behind the counter and gave it to me with the added advice that it might be worth to let it sit since in his experience it comes off a little syrupy. Good advice, but since he also mentioned that he may get more I popped it open and enjoyed it. read more

An unassuming little storefront situated on a quiet corner in Avondale, Capone's looks at first like any other random convenience store, selling lottery tickets, snacks and various sundries. But upon inspection of the beer and wine offerings, you quickly realize that there is nothing ordinary about Capone's booze selection, which rivals (and often exceeds) that of specialty gourmet shops like Pastoral or Provenance. Next to the discounted cases of PBR and Tecate you'll find all kinds of esoteric craft and seasonal beers, many of them seemingly unavailable anywhere else in town. For example, it's no secret that Bourbon County Stout completely sells out throughout the city within a day or two of hitting the shelves. But I was able to find it here weeks after the official release, along with Night Tripper, Night Stalker, and for good measure, King Henry (which boasts a perfect 100 rating on beeradvocate). I of course bought all that I could carry, feeling like Indiana Jones would if he'd just stumbled upon the Holy Grail, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the lost Faberge Eggs at a flea market in Terra Haute. Capone's leaves me a bit mixed. On the one hand, they have an absolutely killer beer selection. On the other hand, their prices are on the higher side compared to many places. That ends up being the crux of it all. I know their prices are higher, so I don't end up coming here all too often. But, I also know that I can use Capone's as a sort of last resort when I'm trying to grab a harder to find craft beer. So, Capone's is what it is. It's not really in the most traveled of areas and the prices are on the higher side. But, they do have a really killer selection of craft beer that very few places can match. This is not a real liquor store. This is an urban convenience store. The pricing reflects this. Think less Binny's and more bodega. As for the other reviewers lauding their wide selection I have to wonder if they get out much. The place is small. The selection is small too. I needed to buy a few bottles of liquor for a party and mistakenly thought this would be the correct last minute place to stop even though I'd been at Jewel . Wow was I wrong. Everything cost at least 30% more than the grocery store. Side note- I paid with a debit card and asked for a receipt. All they could give me was the charge receipt with a total, not the detail of the transaction. It was all very shady since the bottles of liquor were kept behind the counter and the prices were not all clearly marked. I walked out feeling more than a little hustled. I'm all about supporting small business owners but as far as I'm concerned this place is on it's own. read more

Freddy, the owner, was very friendly and talked about beer with me for far longer than I told the wife I'd be gone. The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of five is that the craft beer is usually more expensive than the other liquor stores I go to. I wasn't really paying as much attention to the food as I was the liquor. Holy crap this place is STOCKED. This is the best craft beer store that I have been to thus far. This joint at one point carried Three Floyds "Zombie Dust" but that stuff sells out quick (and it saves your butt from going to Indiana.) They did have like 7 other Three Floyds brews including the ever so rare "Gumball Head." They also carried tons of Dogfish Head, Left Hand, Lagunitas, specialty beers. PRO TIP FOR SUBURBAN PEOPLE WHO GET QUEASY AT THE THOUGHT OF PARALLEL PARKING IN CHICAGO ON WEEKENDS: They have a parking lot connected to the store-it's great! Capones is one of the best bottle shops in Chicago. They usually have the most recent releases, if you can get to them in time. They always have a great selection even if you're not in time for the newest, hottest beer releases. One of the best, if not THE best local brewery selection is always stocked full of delicious beers. Most of the store is beer now a days, so if you're looking for liquor then you might want to try somewhere else. If you're a beer geek then this is a must stop! It's easy to get to. Right off of Elston, north of Addison and right down the street from the Rev taproom on Kedzie. Parking is usually easily available in the lot. There's only been a handful of times when it's been tricky finding a spot. Mark, who is usually behind the counter, is always friendly and helpful. I always make it a priority to stop in and see what's available now that I'm not longer in the city. Definitely one of those places I miss being close to. read more

I only shop at stores I trust, and Capones is simply not trustworthy. All you have to do is look past the surface to notice the shady tactics employed here... using false advertising on beermenus, selling old beer, etc. You're wasting your money paying way over MSRP here for things available much cheaper elsewhere. After shopping here for a couple years, I observed a few things that maybe you wouldn't notice at first glance. Yes they have a great beer selection, but you will pay extra for it. Many beers are $2-5 more than what you'd find elsewhere. Zombie Dust purchased here twice ($14.99, not $13 as listed on beermenus) has been faded both times... that should never happen. Caveat emptor. High prices, misinformation, and lack of imports keep me from stopping in anymore. They update their beermenus list at least twice a day so they're always at the top of the "recently updated" list, which is frankly annoying (never thought i'd say that about a place on beermenus). More egregiously though, items listed and updated the same day may or may not be in stock, or are a different price than listed online... shady, plain and simple. Stuff isn't always on the shelf and sometimes you have to ask, available only if they know you, or they just flat out don't have what they list online. Beer Temple is nearby on Elston, with none of the BS you find here. Fresh beer at fair prices is all I ask... Outdated beer with jacked up prices, no thanks. read more

I've been frequenting this place for the past two years. If you're looking for that special craft beer, they will probably have it. Their prices on EVERYTHING is jacked up, but it's their selection that keeps them in business. That being said, I will NEVER step foot in there again. The guy behind the (very messy counter littered with old and used lotto tickets) snapped at me for leaving money on top of the register waiting for him while he was cashing out my other lotto tickets, saying "why the hell would you leave that there?". Well it was money I was leaving for you to purchase more lottery tickets, but I'll take my liquor, cig, and beer business elsewhere. When I went to visit a friend in Chicago for the weekend, all of my Beer Bros from Michigan told me I absolutely HAD to go to Binny's and no place else. After getting in town, I informed my buddy of this and he told me to forget them and go to Capone's. While I still hit up a Binny's I am so glad I came here. This place truly blows Binny's out of the water! Seriously, this is an awesome place. I cannot say enough good things about it. The only negative I can think of is that it is in Chicago and I live in the Metro Detroit area so unless I want to drive 5 hours just for beer (don't get me wrong, the thought has crossed my mind) I will only be able to go when I visit my buddy who lives in the area. The guy working behind the counter was super friendly and kept the conversation going with me while I browsed the aisles. I was mainly there for 3 Floyd's (FFF) and Pipeworks options as we do not get them in my neck of the woods. While the FFF options were limited (it is pretty much like that anywhere you go though) they had plenty of stuff to choose from by Pipeworks. A beer that tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal? Why not?! I was also shopping for a buddy of mine back home and he really wanted me to try and get some "Zombie Dust" by FFF which is pretty hard to come by in general and it didn't look like they had any. I broke the news to him over the phone and shortly after hanging up the guy who was working there stepped in the back and came out shortly after. There in his hands was what I coveted; Zombie Dust. He looked at me, smiled and said "Is this what you're looking for? It's from my own private stash, but I heard you mention it to your friend on the phone that we didn't have any and he seemed disappointed. You came all this way from Michigan so if you want it, it's yours." I got a ton of good loot and ended up spending way too much there and to be honest, like Jimmy cracking corn, I don't care! All I do care abouth though is making every effort possible to return to this gem when I am in town. read more

Capone's is an interesting beast. The prices are really high, but the selection is quite decent (for beer; I know nothing about wine), so the proximity is really what you pay for. Many times, you'll walk into a cigarette-smoke-filled room with a bunch of guys (I'm not sure what language they're speaking - Assyrian?) sitting around a table playing card games. I for one don't mind this, especially since they are attentive to customers, but it's a caveat for those uncomfortable with smoke. You'll walk out having been overcharged for the content, but all the guys I've interacted with there are nice. As another reviewer said, the receipt is the one that comes from the credit card machine and not the actual register, so it's not itemized. I'm not going to say Capone's is a front for something, but there's definitely something strange about it - but that's okay, because the selection and service are good... plus I happened to be from the hometown of one of the guys, so I got on his good side. Come here for local Micro's and some other very hard to get Micro brews too. Their prices are higher but the stock speaks for itself. Freddy the owner is a great guy and knows his stuff too. This is my go to place. If you follow Capone's on facebook they do a great job of posting their new beers and giveaways (got some free 312 glasses out of that!) The liquor/wine/other selection isn't terribly fantastic but that's not why you go here. It's all about the bombers and US micro brews. read more

A couple years ago, I was experimenting with a gluten free diet; with this effort I discovered the joys and disappointments of gluten free beers. Capone's is right down the road from where I live; one day I gave them a list of several selections I'd like to try, including a brand new gluten free beer I'd never seen in stores, along with my phone number in case they wanted to go out of their way to get them for me. Two days later, someone called me informing me they had gotten one of my requests in. The following day, when I stopped in to pick it up, I discovered they had actually completed my list. That's right, they got them ALL in for me. That's awesome customer service. I've since abandoned the gluten free movement, but Capone's continues to offer an excellent selection of craft beers, most of them refrigerated, and continued friendly customer service. Sure, a 6 pack of beer will cost you a dollar or two extra than if you can find it at a grocery store, but that's to be expected when shopping at a liquor/convenience store. Love, love, love this place!!! They have the best beer selections, particularly if you like smaller breweries. They have the largest selection of Three Floyd's beers that I've ever seen. We met the owner when we went this weekend, and he is very friendly and knowledgeable about beer. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is because the beer is a bit more expensive than i usually pay. I do realize that's probably why they can offer these types of beers, but i know i can find them cheaper (not such a great selection though). This is primarily a liquor store, but has many emergency food and bbq items. Prices are sometimes a little steep, but this is hands down the best micro and craft brew selection west of Western Avenue (maybe even west of Damen). I estimate they stock more than 30 different microbrews, including 6 packs of 3 or 4 different kinds of the Chicago area's two best world-renowned microbrews, Two Brothers and Three Floyds, not to mention numerous 22 oz and specialty sizes. Ask and you shall receive. I normally just get cheap cases of beer here, but a few months ago I asked about a rare import wine and they said they would look into it. Everyone that worked at the store looked into all the distributors they did business with, but found nothing. Several weeks later, I walk into the store and the owner smiles. He'd heard someone had a case of the wine and drove, personally, to get the case for me to enjoy because shipping it wouldn't work. The wine was as delicious as I had remembered it being, and I still can't believe they had kept me in their thoughts as long as they did. Businesses do not conduct themselves this way in present times, and I think it's something sorely missed. Out of pure generosity, Capone's is a place I will be back to often. read more
